Question Android 12 vs. ColorOS 12 [Long Read] - OPPO Find X3 Pro

As Android is the OS and ColorOS an overlaying version of it, I cannot really see dramatic differences between these two, but details create the big picture, right?
In this comparison I picked out those functions which are most important in my personal usage, but also having impact on most of the user base.
In general UI was the big thing for Android 12 but also ColorOS 12. Plenty of changes should ensure the smoothest user experience, with high customization and personalization options. Where Androids “Material You” leads ahead ColorOS’ “Wallpaper-based Theming System”, ColorOS is catching up with great options for Smart Sidebar and the Quick Settings panel.
Here in comparison: Accessibility, Gaming, Security, Update Policy
Let's get into it!
Accessibility:
With “Camera Switches” Android is moving another step forward, allowing you to navigate your phone by using eye movements and facial gestures. ColorOS updated their “Gestures & motions” function with improvements on “Air Gestures” which let you get control by waving a hand. So far there’s no integration of eye/facial gestures available. Both do have an updated version of dark mode, it allows you to select the preferable dark mode tone. The advantage is slightly on ColorOS side with its “Color vision enhancement” which lets you adjust display colors based on your color vision which might be more important for the majority than eye movement tracking.
Ok, both sides are leading in its way, draw.
Android 1 : OPPO 1
Gaming:
Quantum Animation Engine 3.0, RAM Expansion, AI System Booster, General Performance Adaptor 2.0, Ultra Touch Response, Real HD Sound 3.0. This lets my heart beat faster! If we check these buzzwords in detail, we can clearly see that ColorOS 12 has brought high attention to the performance part, which plays along with a smooth integration to Game Space. ColorOS claims that memory occupation is down by 30% while back-end power consumption has also been reduced by 20%, whilst battery consumption by background tasks has also been reduced by 20%.
On Android 12’s side there are new Game Mode APIs for game developers, which lets developers include variable performance functions for easier optimization. This API is planned to be tied to Android’s upcoming Game Dashboard, which should be released later this year.
Gaming is definitely a big win for ColorOS 12 against Android 12, but it's not unimportant to keep the hardware itself in mind.
Android 1 : ColorOS 2
Security:
Security and Privacy was a main point for both OS, in Android 12 a dashboard shows you which apps used which permissions, a pie chart shows how many permissions were used, including a detailed permission breakdown. Next to this Microphone and camera indicators are symbolizing the usage to keep track of un/wanted access. This comes along with approximate GPS location settings, which give you full control over how your location is getting used across apps.
Most of it sounds in general already like a state of the art thing..
ColorOS 12 comes with a 100% integration of all Google Security features, but has 1 additional cool feature: Anti-peep technology. AI technology is used to sense other faces watching your screen and hide notifications on your phone.
Here we’re really close, but remember, details create the big picture.
Android 1 : ColorOS 3
Update Policy:
Google's Pixel 6 series will get Pixel updates for at least 5 years, including Pixel security updates, and “may” also include feature drops and other software updates, whereas Pixel 3, 4, 5, get Android version updates and security updates for at least 3 years.
Oppo is now committing to 3 major updates for the Find X series while the Reno and F series should expect two Android updates along with four years of security patches.
5 years vs. 3 major updates. Hard to say what's better from a user perspective. ColorOS caught up as most other Android OEM’s recently did with a higher commitment on updates, but is still following a regional based rollout strategy, whereas Google showed slightly more efforts on this side.
Point goes to.. Android!
Android 2 , ColorOS 3
.......
Summarizing this quick comparison, ColorOS 12 has slightly more advantages, at least for my usage and preferences.
It’s clearly visible that both OS are super close to each other, with small advantages on each of its core focus. The result sounds fair, as ColorOS brought up great improvements based on previous feedback and experience, Android plays it a bit more safe. Definitely interesting to keep an eye on the 12.1 version of each side and check what learnings of the current phase got resolved.

Honor Play Android Security Patch for December released soon after EMUI 9.0.0 update

Device info: Honor Play, Model (Indian): COR-AL00
As you'll know EMUI 9 is globally rolling out, I have received the Pie update on Jan 10th which is sized about 4.04 GB. Again on Jan 18th I received another update which is an Android Security Patch dated December 1, 2018. It is sized about 240 MB.
See the screen shots below.
Whats new in the update:
> Nothing much. I felt not much of any difference in my daily usage after the update except the ones mentioned above. Digital Balance feature is good to keep yourself away from mobile if used properly. Or you can lose the Balance and abuse it anyway. Its your choice after all.
> Battery performance is same again. Its good like before.
> EMUI interface has some minor changes like revamped Call Screen, Recent Apps, HiTouch for Shopping, etc.
> Gestures are same as previous ones. Still senseless.
swipe from left/right edges for back (****ty gesture)
swipe up from bottom center to home
swipe up from bottom right/left for Assistant
> Suggestion here: disable the Assistant gesture in the Settings for better multitasking.
Bugs:
> I have one. It may not be present for others I suppose. After rebooting device goes to zzzVIBRATIONzzz mode on its own. I have to manually turn off vibration mode every f time.
> EMUI is just a mimic of iOS like all Chinese mobiles do. But transitions are not as smooth as iOS. Sometimes UI transitions jitters just like that. Of course Android mobiles can never make it up to Apple's iOS when it comes to interface design.
> Apps got killed in the background. May be due to aggressive memory management. Keep your favorite apps padlocked in the Recents screen to prevent this from happening. I hate Recents screen personally. Its like going back to old iPhone interface.
You should know that:
> Third-party launchers (Nova too) won't work properly from EMUI 9 as Huawei announced officially.
> Widevine level is L3. Some may want to know this.
> Themes are limited as of now as EMUI 9 is new to the market.
> Its a worthy upgrade for me. No going back.
I highly doubt whether Honor Play will have any Custom ROMs developed in the future as we'll know bootloader cannot be unlocked. XDA page for this device is useful only for information & news sharing I think. Or correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.
Let me know if you have any queries regarding update...
:good:
Best way to avoid aggressive memory management is to change display to 720p!
As mentioned by another user on here ?
I don't notice any loss of quality of screen, working fine for me!
Europe just got 9.0.0.161 with January security patch

Go to Settings>Battery>App Launch. Uncheck those apps you want to keep running in background i.e. manage manually. That's the solution.
If accessibility permission of 3rd party apps are being revoked automatically and you are annoyed of turning it on repeatedly, it's the solution.

Thanks for this. I removed almost all apps from running in background. The usage has become significantly better.

One UI Pros & Cons

I am currently resisting an upgrade, most of reviews are just give you 10 new changes but hardly anyone talks about any missing features.
Anyone can provide their list of Pros & Cons?
if none of the issues raised in some of the threads are a problem as they were not for me then go for PIE

faster, smoother (after 14 days to settle down), 10% higher GPU scores on average from diff test/games from the new driver, better CPU management (still far from the maximum possible tho), better single hand usage, better portrait typing (the keyboard is lifted, my hands don't hurt anymore when typing a lot in portrait), overall the one UI is good, battery life is a little bit less for me - most likely because of the new CPU control for more performance, multiwindow is killed - it's like the google stock solution (no swipe from corner to pop-out, no fast split scree with swipe up recents and hold, no menu between the split apps so you can't switch their place without cutting youtube video etc, no hold down from recents to quickly popout or split - you need the stupid menu), sound system is worse and not following google compatibility guide (if it was not samsung, google would not let them cert that version as it won't pass their checklist) - leading to worse audio from something like poweramp hi-res + I feel overall the sound is worse vs oreo (both speakers and headphones). Overall a worth update, because of the single hand usage and the pure smoothness/speed... but it's not a pure WIN-WIN.
I use multi window, edge panel, resize window and good lock
Looks like pie is not for me and I dont have any issues with Oreo
Probably will stick with that
Yeah, I'd say you're just going to get the same responses that are in the other half dozen similar threads. Personally I love Pie. There's a minority that doesn't. Every single one of them started s thread to ask others if they also disliked it and wanted to downgrade.
