Best forum to ask newb questions on Note 9? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

(Mods please move if appropriate)
* I have a Note 9 (Exynos)
* I have mediocre computer skills
* A few years ago, I managed to upgrade my Note 9 to a rom identified as "ALEXNDR.N960FXXU6FTJ5" that I got here (based on Android 10)
* I would like to upgrade to a newer version of the same rom.
1) Is this the correct thread to use? https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ase-v7-4-dex-gear-encryption-support.3847061/
2) I would like to keep everything else the same on my phone.
- I don't know if that means I'll have to backup/reinstall everything, if that happens automatically, or what.
- I have the following installed: TWRP 3.4.0.0, Titanium Backup Pro, Frija, Odin, ADB (?)
3) I would also like to know what other options I would have for ROMs.
- I realize that there is a forum dedicated to this (Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (Exynos) ROMs, Kernels, Reco)
- But there are so many threads and several different ROMs (I think)
- I could use a friendly "these are the most popular", "this one is only for experts", etc.
- I am leaning toward this one: Noble Rom 2.0
- I realize that ROM recommendations are highly subjective and depends on what the user "wants"...
Can anyone provide help? Thank you in advance.

Hello @Dougmeister, your thread is absolutely in the right forum, the Q&A section. Just to answer your question to moderators.
And the thread you've linked is certainly the one regarding the ROM you've mentioned. Consider to ask you question with your restraints as shown in topic no. 2 there.
As I don't know your device I'm unable to answer your questions regarding other ROM options. I hope somebody else will provide recommendations here in your thread.

If there's a new update available for the current rom you have, you can dirty flash it by only wiping Cache & Dalvik without losing any data & apps
go to TWRP wipe > advanced Wipe > select cache, dalvik
after that go to TWRP install and flash your rom.
If you're interesting in lastest ROMS for Note9 exynos, there're some pretty good roms out there made out of android 12.
1.) Noble 2.0 Based on Android 12 OneUI 4.0
2.) Alexis Rom 3.2 Android 10 with some cool features
3.) ArrowOS android 12 with OTA Weekly updates
4.) PixelExperience Android 12
5.) Project Elixir Android 12
5.) LineageOS 19 Android 12

Need Custom ROM suggestions and Instructions for Xiaomi Mi 5

I recently received a Xiaomi Mi 5 device and am unhappy with the stock MIUI (7.2.8.0 Global Stable) functionality.
My previous phone was a Moto E (1st Gen) and several years ago, I had flashed a custom ROM by @TheStrix [from this thread].
What an amazing ROM that was. It provided an optimized version of the stock ROM that fully supported the hardware and provided a great base on which to add required Apps. I used it happily for years and my son still uses it.
I am looking for a Custom ROM for the Xiaomi Mi 5 that meets the following criteria:
1. Must be stable and supported
2. Must support all device hardware fully without losing functionality (example: IR blaster, NFC, fingerprint, 4-Axis OIS, VoLTE, ...)
3. Provide as close an experience to the standard Android OS it is based on as possible (example retain the great integration of the "OK Google" functionality)
4. As few Apps pre-installed as possible without compromising (2) and (3) above. But must include Google Play Store for a smooth way to install whatever apps (Google or otherwise) are needed later.
4. Clear instructions to install the ROM starting with a stock Mi5 device, using a Linux laptop. I am in to the "open source" movement and don't own a Windows device.
I have already spent a lot of time transferring 15 GB of my data to the device, so a way to update the new ROM without losing the data is desirable, but not a must-have.
Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions. Apologies if this thread turns out to be a duplicate.
Further information from a response I received on the MIUI forum.
My ROM version says MIUI Global 7.2.8.0.0 (MAACNDB) Stable. However official ROMs don't have "CN" in the version for Global Stable ROMs. So looks like my device came with an Unofficial ROM.
Xiaomi may only provide a windows-based unlocking tool. I do not know whether it may work correctly with Wine. Qcom 9008 mode may not work but you can still flash via fastboot, and unlocking bootloader is required.
MIUI is stable and all function should work normally but it is not a AOSP-like one. Lineageos 14.1 is stable but not all functions work - QC 3.0 seldom works, touch button does not work well enough on LGD panel. I do not know how to test OIS, but it is said to work.

In your situation, the fake rom situation, you have to first unlock the bootloader and then flash a real/official miUI rom and from there ... go where you want.
remember: DO A BACKUP if you need your personal data; because this operation, done right, will erase everything from the phone.
A good place to look for informations will be here on xda and the official miUI forum
the unlock request page: http://en.miui.com/unlock/

The best custom rom for mi5, in my opinion, are the RR and the AOSCP. Fast, light (in space used and ram engaged) and maintained with love and dediction.
But they have some flaws; flaws widely discussed in their respective threads (here on xda).
My suggestion: if it's the first time for you with the miUI ... Give it a try!
Because it's in fact a custom rom, with many minor (and major) things already at your disposal.

Search
LineageOS is your ROM then.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-1-xiaomi-mi-5-t3501971
We'll get the official gemini release tonight.
The place for the mi5 roms in xda is in the front page of the mi5 subforum; there is a section just for them full of info and goodies and pixies and unicorns and etc etc. :
mi5 subforum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5
RR stands for Resurrection Remix and AOSCP is also know as CypherOS
But just a couple of hours ago LineageOS has started with the nightly: https://download.lineageos.org/gemini
And yes: do a search before asking a redundant question because all the informations are already here at your disposal.

Android Pie ROM For Redmi 6 Pro

First, I'm so sorry about my poor Chinese English.
I'm new here, just registered 5 minutes ago.
In our China forum 'Coolapk', some cool guys invented(sorry I don't know whether they invented this method) a method, which can directly flash Android Pie on their devices by recovering backups via TWRP RECOVERY.
They named this 'technology' FFAP(Fast Flash Android Pie).
As far as I concerned, most of them succeeded. Even AOSP ROM for Pixel 2 runs successfully on Samsung S9+. That's amazing!
Then... I searched 'FFAP' on Baidu, the most popular search engine in our China, found that THE DEVICE MUST SUPPORTS PROJECT TREBLE.
Redmi 6 Pro supports this.
This means we can fast flash Android Pie on it.
Someone succeeded. Let Redmi 6 Pro ate the pie!
Luckily, the ROM has been packed.
You can just flash it by TWRP.
Download ROM:
pan.baidu.com/s/1xUxQpGn8HdPNnXWHBJuqNw
to be open and honest here, i would not recommend anyone to use the provided link , if u want to use android pie i would strongly recommend to use this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...e-howto-flash-gsi-redmi-6-pro-sakura-t3852191 please use software that people can trust , like in the guide i provided above dont just flash any gsi, or zip someone posted which is registered for 5 minutes.

Request helping with understanding the custom ROMs for Note 9 (SM-N960U)

Hey XDA Forums, first time poster but long time reader & custom ROM fan.
A friend gave me an old Note 9 w/ the SnapDragon 845 SoC. Its screen is busted so it's getting serviced under Samsung's $50 program right now. When it gets back I'd like to install a custom ROM on it but I've been lead to believe that working around/through Samsung+Qualcomm devices is generally much more difficult than other phones. My experience is rooting, flashing, and installing Lineage OS or Pixel Experience ROM on some other devices: Pixels, a Xiaomi Mi A1, and two Exynos Galaxy phones (one A5, one M20). All of these devices have very clear, straight forward How Tos by the respective groups that maintain those projects. I had a BLU phone w/ a MediaTek SoC that I bricked because I was just fumbling my way through trying to flash it from some random forums out there.
So, for this Note 9 I'd like to make sure I have the general order of operations correct and what ROM projects (if any) are out there.
1) Make sure phone is updated to Android 10
2) Install TWRP
3) Download ODM.
4) After wipe & factory reset install ODM.
5) Install custom ROM.
If the above is correct, are my only options for reliable ROMs the ones listed in the Note 9 Snapdragon ROMs/Kernels forum? https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/samsung-galaxy-note-9-snapdragon-roms-kernels.8318/
Are there any good/trustworthy Samsung enthusiast forums (hopefully ROM-focused) that anyone is able to point me to?
Thanks a ton everyone, I appreciate your time.

There's a telegram group for S9/Note9 Snapdragon roms/kernels stuff. I can't find it now. I'll share when I found it.

Question Flashing Android 13 based ROMs, how?

I'm seeing popular ROMs like EvoX and ArrowOS having official builds running on Android 13, and I'm curious how can I get them running on my Note 10 Pro, so any idea how to flash them on TWRP?

Install lIke always ???
:: download image, boot to twrp, clear relevant partitions ( see thousands threads before ), install .zip or image of rom, maybe install gapps and magisk , etc.
Go through the advertisements, but first understand whats going on , before you brick your device
Good luck !

There's one catch, you apparently need an Android 11 build of TWRP to flash Android 13 mods, due to odd issues on Android 12 TWRP builds

I think that the only person who can answer You is Yourself, by installing and testing each of the beta version of the 3 roms Android 13 existing at this moment for the Redmi Note 10 Pro.
Why ?
It’s a bit early as these 3 A13 roms are very recent and no many persons have already tested them.
I installed once Arrows 13, I find this rom very promising but I can’t use it as daily driver because I’m missing features which I have with A12 crDroid like separate volume for phone and notifications, 2 buttons navigation, advanced restart, MIUI camera, …
The download link for the second one seems to be not available for the moment.
The third one is total new (today) and the download link for the Redmi Note 10 Pro seems not to be yet loaded.
The best for You is either try by yourself or wait some time for having the advice of other users.

All depends of what you are expecting of the rom.
This morning I installed for the second time the last version of "Android 13 Project Elixir" on XDA forum :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ir-official-thirteen-aosp-05-09-2022.4489275/.
I gave my opinion about it (see and read last post of the thread Elixir).
The only point about which I will never discuss is the battery draining bacause it depends not only from the rom but also of the way you are using your smartphone and from the applications you have installed and are using.
Most, if not all, android 13 custom roms are still wip regarding the customisation, almost barebone. Miui camera might get ported to a13 once every bugs has been squished, meanwhile gcam should be a better alternative (see the dedicated thread about it). My advice: sticks to a12 until all customisation has been migrated to a13, unless you're willing to be a tester.

I am a new bee in mobile hardening and Operating System Customization. I have Samsung A12 SM-a127F and I want to install Lineage OS and GSI image

I have recently bought Samsung Galaxy A12 SM-a127f Android 12 Binary 7
I want to install Lineage OS and GSI image on it for some reason.
According to best of my knowledge, there is no official custom recovery (TWRP) available on Samsung official website. Therefore, I have decided to downgrade it to Android version 11 but unfortunately no firmware of Android version 11 has been flashed till yet.
Note: I have already unlocked the phone by enabling OEM unlock mode and successfully flashed "Samfw.com_SM-A127F_XSG_A127FXXU7BVI4_fac" on my device
Please help me in downgrading my device and for the installation of TWRP on it

Welcome aboard to xda forum @MozNoor
Don't forget to read our Forum Rules and may I suggest you give your thread a short title like "Hi, I'm a new bee" or something like that.
And in your thread you write your comment where you explain what you are looking for, what you would like etc...
This is to avoid having long titles.
Have a good time to xda and I hope you find the answer to your problem, and go to see this forum Galaxy A12
