Hope so

2.1

Use 2.1 but good quality. Its sequential read speed is almost 600MB/s and its sequential write speed is almost 300MB/s.

Enough for downloads. My internet is slowly, just 400MBit/s or 50MB/s. So we have reserves for 6 times faster internet or WiFi transfer over ax

[Q] Can the Nexus One act as a Wi-Fi hotspot using 802.11n?

Question in the title. Thanks.
From what I understand, the nexus can only send and receive at 2.4ghz rather than 5 ghz which is what gives an n radio its higher range. I don't think this is something software can patch. But I'd love to hear if I'm wrong.

802.11N exists in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, which is exactly how the N1 is able to connect to 802.11N hotspots broadcasting in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, but not to the 5Ghz ones

Exactly. Now, what I want to know, is if I can use Wi-Fi hotspot to connect my laptop to my phone via 802.11n 2.4GHz.
I believe not - phone doesn't have MIMO capabilities required from 802.11n router. On the other hand, I don't see why it could help you in any possible way - it won't speed up the file transfer over the network (which is capped lower than 54Mbps - something around 4MB/s is the fastest achievable transfer rate on USB-SD, and it's not achievable under OS either, only in recovery - so network transfers will be also capped at that maximum or less), and it definitely won't speed up the internet (which is capped at 7.2Mbps).

Thanks. I assumed that the transfer rate of my class 6 SD card was around 49Mbps (6MB/s), but I didn't didn't realize that transfers rates of the NAND flash (via the OS) were lower than 54Mbps (~6.6MB/s)...

Every transfer HAS to pass through the NAND flash? There's no way of going directly to the SD card?
That is interesting indeed!

No, I don't believe it does. However, the transfer rate of an SD card is slower than the onboard flash memory.

I'm not quite sure I understand...
You stated that the NAND memory had a speed "lower than 54Mbps (~6.6MB/s)" while your SD card has speeds "around 49Mbps (6MB/s)". Wouldn't a class 10 be technically faster than the NAND memory or does the "through the OS" part have something to do with the speed?
Thanks!

Jack (not me) said that the transfer rate of the NAND memory is lower than 54Mbps. I would have thought that they would have been much higher, that's why I asked the initial question. (And I made a typo: in my last post, I should have said the MAX speed of my SD card was around 49Mbps). But yes, you are right, a Class 10 card should have a max speed of ~82Mbps although I doubt you would ever realize that in real life.

Yeah, I assumed NAND flash was much faster too... it's odd! I do realize class 10 would be useless most of the time, except maybe for extreme 720p recording
Anyways, merci beaucoup pour l'info

Faster SD Card

Does it help more if I buy a new faster SD card (default card is a Class 2 card), or do optimizations such as this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888379
I'll probably get a Class 6 card, as I haven't seen any Class 10 yet for micro SD.

Yes, faster SD cards do help quite a bit. I used a class 4 for a while and it was noticeably improved for apps2sd on eclair. I got a class 10 for Christmas and the improvement over class 4 was definitely noticeable but not as dramatic. I've read that there isn't much of an improvement between class 6 and class 10 due to hardware limitations inside the phone. For HD video recording I've seen recommendations for class 6+.
Khalpower's optimization script is amazing for eclair. I recommend the JIT, optimized build.prop, overclock and apps2sd. There is also a newer JIT, but I'm not sure if khal incorporated it into his script yet. I think we're still struggling to get the froyo builds to measure up to the optimized eclairs.
Not sure though, I find my XT720 is more compatible with class2 SD cards. I've got one 4GB Class2 Card, one 8GB class2 Card and one 8GB Class6 card which all made by SansDisk. all of these, the most compatible one is the 4GB class2 Card. Although the Class6 card is faster and perform better, there's an issue with stability, where the phone frequently cannot mount the card when the phone is booted.
pls tell your suggestions.

there are class 10 micro SD but the prices are outrageous at the moment.
class 6 16GB is the best bang for the buck right now
the 32GB are still stuck on class 4
looking forward to get some 32GB class 6 when they come out
Thanks for the comments. I think I'll get a 16GB class 6.
32GB microSD are also still pretty expensive (above $100).
Been using the Class 6 for a day now and I can feel speed improvements in loading apps or data from the sd card. I also cleared the factory settings to start fresh.
I've got a class 10 16 GB microSD card for 30 € in Germany, which is about 40 $. I think that's a fair price. I haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you if it is faster or not.

I'm always hessitant to buy something with that odd of a price/speed ratio. I was actually reading the reviews and found something VERY interesting. There was one person who was mentioning an app called SD Speed Boost that was described as being able to adjust the sd card cache, thus speeding up the read/write speed to the card. It was only a dollar, so I tried it.
WOW...
It has improved the speed of my system 10x. I was skeptical at first, but I realized that if I run SD Tools from the market to test the speed before and after, it shows a significant increase in read/write speed. Obviously, those of us who have apps and cache on our sd card are constantly hitting it and the card's performance will affect performance.
Does anyone else want to tackle this $1 app and confirm my findings? If this is the answer to our slowness problems, maybe the settings that this app changes can somehow be added to our ROMs for everyone to benefit!

Is this the app your'e referring to? My write speed stayed about the same @10.7MB/s but the read speed went from @16 to 23 with a 1MB cache. I don't have any apps on the sd card to verify that aspect of any performance boost but Media Gallery loaded pretty quick.
:Edit: A 2MB cache improved the read speed to 43MB/s

Yes, this is the app i'm using. I've been "field testing" this all day, and I must say that I have never had this type of responsiveness and speed from this phone EVER. I am loving this $1 addition to my phone. I have a class 4 card that seems to be giving me 6mb write/33mb read and that is substantially better. I've tinkered with the different settings and found arount 3000 giving me the best numbers with my specific card. I can only imagine that a different class card would need different settings.

OS: Dexter's 1.3 froyo with bugfix 2
SD Card: Adata 16GB Class 6
Speed Test
Average result from running 3x:
128KB cache: Read: 13.96MBps; Write: 6.63MBps
1024KB cache: Read: 22.40MBps (60% faster); Write: 6.93MBps
2048KB cache: Read: 36.67MBps (163% faster); Write: 6.90MBps
4096KB cache: Read: 33.67MBps (141% faster); Write: 6.90MBps
Interesting. The app seems to increase Read-speed only. I need to find an ideal cache size for optimal speed increase, so far it seems to be 2MB for me.
I'll rerun with my old Class 2 microSD card when I get home.

I think the app is just changing the value in /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
The default value seems to be 128. You can set the value using e.g.
Code:
echo 2048 > /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
I have a 16GB Kingston "class 10" (see also complaints about this card throughout XDA--I got it as a gift and I believe it was on sale for $40 at the time).
I've been testing read and write speeds with "SD tools" (free). SD tools writes and reads 190 MB and displays a dial as it goes so I can see that the initial write speed starts pretty high (10 MB/s) and then quickly falls significantly within a few seconds (probably after an on SD card buffer gets filled) eventually stabilizing at 3.3 MB/s. So, clearly this card is not really class 10 at all as it cannot sustain 10 MB/s except for what seems to be a 1 sec burst. As far as read and read_ahead_kb goes:
128 -- 14.1 MB/s read (avg of 3)
1024 -- 22.4 MB/s read (avg of 3)
2048 -- 43.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
4096 -- 38.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
Optimal also seems to be 2MB for me.

Poor andronench scores. Should I exchange my tf701?

I just got my new tf701. It's running stock android 4.2.2. The Androbench micro scores are worse than my old Transformer Prime. I thought the tf701 didn't have poor performing internal sd like the tfp did. What are your scores? Should I exchange it?
Here're my tf701 Androbench micro test scores:
Sequential Read: 67.12 MB/s
Sequential Write: 14.37 MB/s
Random read: 7.21 MB/s, 1846.66 IOPS (4K)
Random write: 0.82 MB/s, 209.94 IOPS (4K)
SQLite scores:
Insert: 68.15 TPS, 4.4 sec
Update: 85.03 TPS, 3.52 sec
Delete: 82.94 TPS, 3.61 sec
all of them are below the Transformer Prime's.

i just ran mine i got similar results. i think it is wrong as i copy between tab and sd often and copies faster than that result much faster.
i got rand write 1.2
rand read 36.8
no reboot for days.
i ran on 3.2 and remember much higher
so it may be firmware
i wonder what the custom rom that is out gets
anyway it seems like next update may be 3.4 so lets hope its polished.
im happy with performance and since update i have not got garbled screen.
the dock though is still **** and it seems to drain the batt faster when docked then undocked
though havinf a 64gb sd card may cause extra drain?

Thanks. I feel better. I hope more members can post about their AndroBench results.
My TF701 is not running slow. I just want to make sure I don't get a defective one.
I have owned a Transformer Prime (TF201) for a couple of years. TF201 is notorious for having slow internal SD. I ran custom ROMs that had Data2SD. The current ROM on it is Voyager2K's Paranoid 3.99. I don't use Data2SD on it anymore even though that's an option. The reason is my AndroBench scores are excellent without Data2SD, big improvements from the beginning, esp the writes. I don't know what Voyager2k did to make his ROM improve on SD speeds. But the OS itself can obviously make the difference.
My TF201 with stock 4.x ROM:
Sequential Read: 18.07 MB/s
Sequential Write: 3.85 MB/s
Random read: 5.25 MB/s, 1345.42 IOPS (4K)
Random write: 0.21 MB/s, 55.82 IOPS (4K)
The writes are much better even though the reads are not as good
My TF201 with PA ROM 3.99 w/o Data2SD:
Sequential Read: 13.3 MB/s
Sequential Write: 159.77 MB/s
Random read: 4.86 MB/s, 1246.38 IOPS (4K)
Random write: 160.58 MB/s, 41109.08 IOPS (4K)
The writes are much better even though the reads are not as good

I don't trust those scores. Sounds like fsync might be off in which case you can forget the write scores being reliable.

Storage speed 64GB vs 128GB

Is there any good comparison between the two models in terms of storage speed?
PS.: I know a therad about this topic already exists but it's not clear (a user with 64GB model got higher benchmark scores than another user with 128GB model)
I asked a similar question before getting my phone and the speed should be the same. The only difference is the space obviously. If there is a difference in performance it's probably negligible.
Larger SSD's usually have better speeds, for whatever reasons. The 128GB might be slightly better, or on par.

I was refering to that thread and it makes no sense that the 64GB model is faster
Well, I know flash memory is different than a standard HDD... I was going to say the reason that it might be a little slower is because there is more space to cover so it takes longer to read/write data, but technically it shouldn't matter with flash memory. Honestly I'm not sure, but my guess is every phone will get a little different benchmarks. Nonetheless the phone is very fast and responsive, so you shouldn't need to worry.

Might be, or better should be matter of measurement accuracy.
Speaks for the high quality of the 64GB.

why are my random write speeds so low?

4x-5x slower than what benchmarks usually show for this model!
