Question Screen Switching on from lock screen automatically - Motorola Edge 20 Pro

Hi,
I've noticed the screen automatically turns itself on and the sensitivity is too low (tuning on to often). It's almost as though all I have to do is walk past, or wave my hand near by to the phone and boom the screen tuns on! I don't really like how sensitive it is.
How do I adjust the sensitivity so it doesn't turn on so easily?

Please send Motorola feedback under system and also in the Moto app + play store review to try and get them to add some more options / toggles to Moto peek (Moto display).
Motorola should be ashamed of the current Moto peek it's such a mess. This stupid movement thing you mentioned and the fact it cannot even show the notification content coming in without having to hold the icon down.
It is the worst thing about the phone by far.
To top it off if you disable it you can no longer get notifications on your phone or use double tap to wake.
A third party app called glimpse notifications fixes the notifications coming in but the double tap to wake is not possible to hack back.
You can use a proximity sensor wave app to restore a similar function but it's not as good.

[Q] How do you guys feel about Moto Display?

I honestly think it is far too sensitive. I just got my X today and I set it in my passenger seat to drive. The active display turned on about every 4 seconds because of the tiny bumps from driving. With the IR sensors turned on the display is turned on every time I set down my phone. I emailed Moto about making some kind of sensitivity setting. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't worry about it. It barely uses any power when it turns on because amoled. If it was an LCD screen, you bet I would be complaining

I'm not really worried about battery life so much as it just annoys me to see my screen constantly turn on. Well, partly.
I made it like the 2013 version. Shut off the hand motion sensors so now it only responds to movement of the device. MUCH better on battery
Active Display turns on as long as you have notifications, it's not road bumps setting it off.

I think you may be wrong on this, if you wave at the phone or move it a little bit the display will show you the time, even if there is no notifications, i too have this issue, i leave my phone on the dash and since the back of the phone is curved , it will tilt a little , enough to activate the display. No biggie, but just saying it happens .
If it had the option, my setup would be OFF Movement sensor, and ON (ir) gesture sensor . i see myself frequently waving at the screen to check the time, and now i do this thing where i dont use the wake button to unlock the phone while it sits on my desk, i make the display wake with my hand and unlock it..

2nd that, if I could turn off the movement sensor I would also. The gesture sensor works pretty great, the movement sensor is too sensitive.
Yeah, mine blinks on and off all the time regardless of notifications or not. Received an update the other day for the sensors and it didn't change anything.

I totally agree. IR only and no movement would be great. I have IR turned off right now and I wish it didn't annoy me to have both on. I paid for these fancy new IR sensors and I'm not even using them.

I know what you're talking about, the screen does flash if you have a notification. I can obviously tell I don't have one, just take your phone and tap the corner of it or set it on your couch and then sit down, your active display will turn on.

If you are worried about the phone activating the screen too frequently - I think having it upside down will prevent that. The active screen doesn't turn on when in a pocket, and I think that could also be said for being upside down on the car seat next to you.

[Q] Lock screen - phone movement

This may have been answered elsewhere , but I am coming from an S4 and I was wondering why my Droid Turbo when I pick it flashes the lock screen.
I have moto display turned on for notifications and I like that, I do not have the the wave/hand proximity turned on.
The phone will slide in the car seat and the lock screen will come on I pick it up and it flashes on. Then it goes on and I keep moving it around it will then flash back on again. Or every time I take it out of my pocket it comes on.
I heard something about Moto screens breathing or something.
thanks!

Moto Actions controls that. I actually like it because I can check the time just by waving my hand over the phone without having to hit a button. You could try disabling Moto Actions to see if that helps.

Here is what I see happening, if you turn on Moto Display to flash notifications, each time I just pick the phone or move it the lock screen and time flahes.
If I turn off Moto Display, no notifications flash and when I move the phone no lockscreen, no nothing.
Should be a way to see the notifications flash in and out, but not react to just moving the phone by flashing lock screen
thx
There are two separate apps in play here. Moto Display and Moto Actions.
Moto Display is what you want to keep active so that it will show you on the lock screen when you get a message, etc.
Moto Actions is what happens when you move your hand towards the phone.
If you go into your apps settings and manually disable the Moto Actions app. It will prevent the phone from flashing the lock screen when it detects movement.

thanks
Do you have "Approach" turned off under moto actions? Cuz that's exactly what it sounds like you have turned on.

Mine does the same thing it may be because the twist for camera is on? all other options are turned off (battery Saving)
Every time I move the phone the notification screen lights up but I noticed if you cover the proximity sensor on the top of phone it doesnt light up at all
Its part of the active display. It comes on when the phone is moved. I do wish there was a setting for it to only come on when you have a notification, but there isn't a setting for that that I know of. I know a lot of ppl like this "feature," but I do miss just the simple notification led.
i do not have approach or twist for camera on at all. I only have the notify on notifications.
phone sitting there , black screen just lift one side up and the screen comes on
Moto Actions/Moto Dispaly
Interesting thread because it illustrates the various preferences we all have in interacting with our phones. I think it's pretty neat that Moto developed these options despite the fact that I've turned off some of the features.
For example, I don't need it to sense my eyes, so I turned off that. I don't need it to turn on each time I wave my hand. It was turning on with shadows/sun/clouds while driving and anytime I'd move my arm. Don't like that.
What I do like is the intermittent notifications as well as the screen turning on if I move the phone. What we do with the notifications is pretty cool too. I like my Turbo Droid.
Cheers!

Seems to be some confusion in here.
Moto Display uses two methods to turn on the screen. It uses the phone's accelerometer to tell if you move the device. If you move the device at all, Moto Display will turn on. Only way to stop this is to turn off Moto Display.
The other method uses the front IR sensors to detect if you wave your hand in front of the screen. This method can be turned off within Moto Actions.
The screen constantly flashing (especially in the car) is annoying, but it has almost no battery impact.
That's what I was looking for, so it's the accelerometer making it come on as I don't have the hand activation turned on, I just have the moto notifications in Moto display turned on

Here is the right solution
Go to settings > App > In all app tab select these two app 1) Moto Display 2) Moto Action, now disable these both app and now the phone wont flash clock..
If you have RR Rom installed I think there is an option to turn on and off the hand wave and/or the "pick-up" sensing.
I found out how to stop the clock and battery circle when I move. You set it by just clicking the Moto app. And turn it off.
It's not done I'm settings. You have to open the app from the home screen.
Trust me, the thing blinking every time I moved when the screen was turned off was driving me nuts!

Ambient display and security settings - possible undocumented feature

It appears that ambient display does not work when your screen lock setting is set to None.
I was showing a mate my Nexus 6 yesterday and started playing with a few settings. I noticed that all of a sudden my ambient display stopped working. I did some testing this morning and finally worked it out that when the screen lock setting is set to None, ambient display does not activate. Any notifications that come through stop appearing on the screen. Setting the screen lock setting to anything other than None ensures ambient display works once again.
1. Is this a known feature / situation for the N6 ?
2. Is anyone else experiencing the same behavior or is it just me ?
1. if you dont have a lockscreen then it cant show you notifications on it. duh, lol.
2. we all have known about this since before lollipop came out.
1. I see no reason why a notification could not be shown on the screen using ambient display even if I don't have a lock screen. It is not like I have actually turned the screen on yet.
2. And yet, when I tried searching for an answer to why my ambient display wasn't working, I found no mention of it at all, not in XDA or the web in general.
Thanks for clearing it up for me, it is clearly a feature of the phone.

if you dont have a lockscreen, then it has nothing to show the incoming message on. if no lockscreen, then it would just show in the status bar.
I understand your point simms22, but I think you may be missing mine. Does it have to be the lock screen that the notification is shown on when it arrives.
For example, msg arrive, screen turns on to show msg. If I do nothing then the screen turns off. If I haven't interacted with the screen, does the notification really need the lock screen to be displayed? I guess that I'm just not convinced that the lock screen is needed to display notifications when I pick my phone up, ie before I touch the screen. If I then interact with a notification then perform the interaction, but if I touch a part of the screen where is no notification, open the device.
The above would be mute if I pick the device up and press the power button to open the home screen.
I guess I look at things a little different, I design systems and interfaces for a living for the Dept of Defence.
I have found that the ambient display does not always activate when I pick the phone up, I'd say its about 90% reliable, have u found the same ?

yea, the way the code is written, there needs to be a lock screen to be displayed. i dont really use it anymore, but i found it to be around 90% as well.
Just to re-iterate, Ambient display is displaying the Lockscreen notifications, not SystemUI notifications, so to show the lockscreen notifications, Lockscreen must be on.

I totally agree. I upgraded from my 2013 Moto X, with Moto DIsplay, to the N6. I NEVER used a lock screen on the Motox, and enjoyed being able to just glance at the phone to know what was incoming.. its quite annoying that I can no longer get my notifications to show up on my screen without turning the phone on, and pulling the shade down. I'm on the computer all day, and have my phone setup next to me and use it to get a quick view of incoming work emails, with out taking my hands off the keyboard, or even stop typing for that matter.
If I would have known that the N6 was unable to work in this matter I would not have gotten it. I would have gone with the Moto X 2 instead.
Hi guys. Do you know any, preferably minimalistic, screen lock app that is compatible with ambient display? Have tried my fav Zui Locker with no luck.

What I mean to say is, my phone is in a desk, then a small vibration like putting my elbow in the desk, makes the Moto Display to awake.
It's annoying because I have to look to the phone to check if is not an message, and is not, just the super sensitive Moto Display.

Go into the app drawer and you will see the Moto icon. Touch that to open it then up at the top is a gear touch that. You can turn off active display entirely by touching display and unchecking moto display.
You also can try turning off Approach for Moto Display in the Actions to see if that helps if you don't want to turn off the moto display entirely.
I already had tried that, but I it only makes me lost the approach to awake. It continues to awake with vibration, but way less.
I wanted the Moto Display to have the approach but not the vibration sensor.
I've had searched for a service for disable but to no avail.

Notification LED vs Ambient Screen

I am thinking about buying a Nokia 7 Plus but one thing is really bugging me.
I am currently using the OnePlus 2 which has a Notification LED and I have gotten quite used to it and I'm not very happy to give it up. The Ambient Screen might be an alternative for me but one thing about it is bugging me. It takes advantage of the face that OLED screen don't use any power to display black. But the 7 Plus uses an LCD.
So how much of a battery issue is using the Ambient Screen with this phone?
the Nokia 7 Plus does not have a always on display. the screen lights up if you get a message or pick up your phone
Yes like what they guy above said and the battery usage is minimal at best
You will get used to live without that led. It took couple days to get used just take phone to hand and it'll show you your notifications.

I agree. I do not miss led notification that much either. I used to have Huawei P10 before with a tiny led which was in fact unusable in daylight anyway, therefore I find picking up this Nokia phone to hand shortly more than I liked the crappy led on P10.
Is it any specific movement of the phone that will make the screen come on? Does it happen when walking for instance with the phone in your pocket?
yes, the phone needs to lay down on a table frist and you need to lift it up. The screen lights up then.
I doubt this happens when the phone is in your pocket.

if you walking without somersault then ambiend is not activated
is need specific movement, from desk pick up to face, or from pocket to hand, in fact needed moving about 90 degress
The phone uses the proximity sensor with the ambient display, so if phone is in pocket, then it won't be activated unless you pull it out of your pocket, and it doesn't need any specific movement, any movement will trigger it on

Does it have the feature like the moto display, where you can wave above the screen to make ambient display light up and show notifications without touching the screen?
No it doesn't unfortunately – and this feature was borrowed from Nokia on the glance screen introduced in the WP8 era. I was too looking for a comeback on my Nokia 7 Plus.
On a side note – any possible hack to have this ambient display always on? My Lumia 1020 has an LCD screen and has glance screen that can be configured to be always on, so it's not technically impossible. It just consumes more battery, but I like to see the notification status and the clock at a glance without having to touch or hover anything.
