i can root my moto g9 play?... - Moto G9 Play Questions & Answers

hello friends, my question is the following, I would like to know if it is possible to root a g9 play with the latest security patches of this year (May/July) without leaving it in hardbrick mode?
and another question, could a custom rom be installed with these updated security patches?
edit:
I was able to root my phone with the latest security patch with no problem. I used Magisk.

Did you use a tutorial? If so, would you mind linking it here? I'm trying to root my G9 play.

Where can I find the boot.img to use magisk

Can't update

I made the mistake of installing TWRP and Magisk before updating, and all I get is the "update unsucessful" screen, so now I'm stuck with 7.1.1 on my Android One Moto X4.
I found a factory image of Oreo on firmware.center (can't link it here because new user, but the filename was PAYTON_FI_8.0.0_OPW27.57-25-2_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip) for my device, and would like to know if it's safe to use and how to install it (sites seem to give conflicting information). This thing is brand new, so I'm a bit nervous about messing it up.
Hey, just try this Guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/development/flash-official-frmware-moto-x4-t3730750
And use this ROM as it is current Oreo with March Security patch: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673956719939834159
If you have further issues feel free to ask again

One last thing, that guide mentions using mfastboot, where do I get it? Is it any different from the regular fastboot?
No it's just normal fastboot.
Flashed it, works great! Thank you! (However, Android File Host was having issues and it took multiple times before a successful download)

Moto G6 return to STOCK

Hi, does anyone have access to the Firmware for a reteuVariant of the XT1925-5 (Ali)? or can i just use the other Stock Roms?
EDIT: Found it on a mirror.
Link if someone needs one: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/ali/official/RETEU/
Have you tried to go back to stock uaing Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant? Cause a few members with -6 variant said that thy got the message that their phone is not supported.

Hi everyone! I had OPS27.82-87-3 on my XT1925-5 and got the update hint from Motorola again and again. Update did not work (because of TWRP3.2.3 and Magisk 18). I could not install another ROM (I already reported elsewhere!). Now I have tried the Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant and since then OPS27.82-90 with security patch October 1 on myXT1925-5. But: TWRP is gone, Magisk too and at the start again the "unlocked etc." Klimbim, my beautiful boot-logo is also gone. I do not know yet if and when I switch to TWRP and Magisk again. It does not really make sense without any proper custom ROM!
Another thing: All apps are still there, the appearance has not changed, all contacts, calendars, etc. is unchanged! Of course, some apps that had root privileges only partially work! But that is logical!
Greetings from Austria!
Why would you post this question in the development section of the forums? [emoji848]. Better place would have been in the Q&A section...

Yeah that's how it works. It flashed the servicefile.xml instead of the flashfile.xml. Which flashed system, boot, and all other partitions without wiping data.
Same can be accomplished with RSD lite or fastboot along with a stock firmware package.

Bootloader lock or hide

Hi,
I hope somebody can give me a hint.
I just got a used p20 pro with open bootloader but stock rom.
Unfortunately the Google security check has some "problems" with this situation and doesn't allow me to use several apps like Netflix, Google pay, etc.
So I'm looking for a way to easily fix this problem, the phone will be used by my parents.
Either lock the bootloader or "hide" it probably.
But how - I don't have the bootloader code - and I'm not too much into android rooting...
Usefull hints are appreciated.
Merry xmas
Mounty
You're on thin ice my pedigree chum..
Avoid flashing anything that would allow a block of any kind which is an absolute reality.
Having used absolutely every ROM and OS from 8.1 to 10
My advice. Flash AOSIP and then ask in thread to get safety net working.
Literally nothing else it worth your time.
Unless you're strange and like EMUI.
In such case, stuck with stock.
Just be aware you're in a position that a lot of people would kill for.
Google have done some **** stuff to make people who have unlocked bootloader a nightmare. I don't think there is a way to hide it unless you use Magisk

If they are not some kind of advanced users, unlocked bootloader has exactly 0 added value for them. Search the forum for flushing methods, the ones that will warn you that this method re-locks the bootloader, flush the latest stock ROM for your region and live a happy and calm life.
As a suggestion.. Use Magisk with Safety patch and you're done. You can keep the bootloader unlocked and still bypass google restrictions. (Install apps like netflix, etc.)
My phone is on 9.0.1.328 and works fine.

Hi,
Thx so far, I think I'll try the magisk thing.
Are there any downsides on this? Will Ota updates still work?
I already downloaded and installed magisk manager, but I was not able to install magisk via magisk manager.
I downloaded the zip file and tried to install it.
But I only got the attached error.
I think I have to patch something?!
Any advise?
Thx

You need to patch the ramdisk recovery file with magisk, flash it and you are good to go. It's a 5 min procedure. Let me know if you need more help with that.
This way you will hide your unlocked bootloader and you will pass safetynet.
Only downside is that if there is an ota update you will need to flash the original ramdisk recovery, do the ota and then do ramdisk recovery file patch again.
If you lock the bootloader then you won't be able to unlock it again as you won't have the code (unless you got the code from the previous owner too).

Hi,
thx for your offer/advise. I’ll try this way - it sounds most promising to me.
Can I do this on the mobile only, or do I need a pc?
Where / How do I find the ramdisk recovery?
BL Lock
I can lock (yes, lock) your bootloader for free.
Contact me at Telegram (@AntiEngineer), you don't need to open up your device.

Installing a "RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img" patched with Magisk is rooting the phone.
I´m fine if i have to root it to hide the open bootloader

Requesting newer ROOT guide for Moto X4

Hi, hope somebody can help me, i unlocked the bootloader in this phone because i want to root it, in the past i never really rooted phones unless necessary but never got into the magisk app
The phone is XT1900-4
android 9: PPWS29.69-40-3-1
security patch: 1 september 2019
The phone support is over and wont receive any update anymore
I understand how to install the TWRP, however when i go to the page for download the img and zip, i see this name
twrp 3.6.2_11-0-payton with the proper zip and img files
but down there is anothers ones which say
twrp 3.6.0_9-0-payton with the zip and img files
and even down there other ones without the 9 or 11
So the question is correct me if i am wrong, the ones at top are the most recent ones 3.6.2_11 than the 3.6.0_9 But those two numbers at end, 11 and 9 are because you need to have android 11 for install the 3.6.2? if i am correct then i must flash the one which says 3.6.0_9 since i am using android 9? or has nothing to do what version of android i have and just install the most recent one?
Ive been doing more digging, and just realized Magisk app and Magisk manager have been integrated
So my new questions is...how do i root this phone now? do i still need twrp? or just download the magisk 25.1 and follow instructions?
The first video i saw is this one
but since is using old files(as well any other video), i wanted to use updated files hence i dont know if this video is outdated now or still being the only way for root the phone which will force me to use those old files
Thank you
Ignore this second post in the thread, was a mistake and dont know how to delete, just focus in my question/request
Need to root Moto X4 in july 2022

Question Correct way to update w/ root (?)

So, as title says, i'm rooted with the first october update and now i want to go with november one, but i'm rooted and of course OTA isn't working. How to correctly do it with factory image? With oneplus was easy, flash update package .zip with internal updater and then install magisk on the other slot but here is different (i think). Anyone already did it?
Thanks

Hi Dude,
PIXEL-Flasher is your friend.
📳🔥PixelFlasher for Google Pixel 7 Support Thread.
This is the support thread of PixelFlasher (PixelFlasher is an open-source self contained GUI tool to facilitate Pixel phone device flashing/rooting/updating with extra features). Note: This thread is meant for issues and problems faced in...
forum.xda-developers.com
How to use the Pixel flasher tool is perfectly explained in the OP's!
For me the Update (Nov fact-img) worked w/o any problems inclusive keeping root! (in PixelFlasher you can patch the init_boot and will be flashed automatically)
Just updated with pixel flasher keeping root with magisk and xposed and all modules, everything works without any type of issues! Absolutely reccomended to those who have my doubts. Amazing software for pixel users!
If somebody is looking for an alternative method, check out this video tutorial.
It worked perfectly for me.
I only just got my pixel 7, but the pixel flasher way seems way more simple than that alternative method.
Well, I just updated using the pixelflasher...
That was just about as simple as it gets. I recommend!
Can you skip a monthly update using pixel flasher? Say you're on October/rooted. Could you update to December/rooted or should you update to November first?

Unfortunately not. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...vember-update-with-magisk-ota-method.4515951/
I gave it a shot going to qpr2. Freak07's solution works to recover.

No, because it's not working. You need to use flash-all.bat (after editing and deleting the "-w") from stock when updating and re-root. Faster than the OTA upgrade, takes less time.
