General Motorola's broken phones and their customer support - Motorola Edge 30 Ultra / Motorola Moto X30 Pro

In order to raise public awareness I want to sum up the experience most of us had in the last two months with the Edge 30 Ultra and Motorola's customer support.
The Edge 30 Ultra / x30 Pro was advertised as Motorola's latest and greatest flagship phone with the first implementation of Samsungs Isocell HP1 200mp sensor. Prior to release it received a lot of good reviews by testers and YouTube and other platforms, none of them even mentioning the huge issues that would follow.
Timeline:The first issues popped up in August 2022, with videos being shared that are completely out of focus:
In September 2022 "Geeky Stuff" shared his views on the broken focus for pictures on YouTube:
I shared the information about broken RAW implementation on 2022-09-03 on Motorola's official forums. This report received nothing but pre fabricated text block answers from Motorola:
On 2022-09-16 I opened another thread with the major issues summed up. This was the first public report of the broken autofocus. About a week prior to this post I also wrote a mail to the camera department of Motorola, which received no answer. Once again we receive nothing but pre fabricated text block answers from Motorola:
A lot of other threads followed by people who were also aware of the problem and on 2022-11-17 and admin finally answered to other threads. In summed up words: They can not guarantee a fix for the issues and will not release any kind of timeline for future updates:
The current state (2022-11-25):- Motorola's camera app does not support recording in 4k on the tele and ultrawide lenses. They are both limited to 1080p 30fps.
- The focus on the main sensor is BROKEN for anything above 4k 30fps and pumping and unreliable below that. There are a lot of videos all over the web but you can take a quick look here:
-> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NDga76ru_YZ5ggLvFTNYjY0xdkOME0-O/view
- The focus for pictures is unreliable and has unexpected behavior. "Geeky Stuff"'s video from above documented this extensively.
- The EIS / OIS for the main sensor is not calibrated correctly. Slightly shaking the phone produces earthquake like results:
-> https://drive.google.com/file/d/14tC6d1Tvq1888-DRVN6m7Zhr47jzPd25/view?usp=sharing
- The RAW output of the main sensor is BROKEN. It produces muddy contrasty dark images that are not fixable in post:
-> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13QfvUkFy8GgQOFMC3-jJckTiehmFRFtP
- Instead of working on the camera and fixing the issues that turn this into a 200€ low budget phone Motorola decided to work against the modding community. It is not possible to change the carrier via fastboot command after a recent update anymore.
All these issues were pointed out to Motorola more than TWO MONTHS ago, and not fixed since then. Mind you - this is a 800-900€ flagship device.
I'm hoping to raise awareness with this writeup, maybe point some websites to it.

Great post! Being a Motorola owner for the first time in my life. Is it normal that in 3 months i receive 1 update and the phone its still bugged especially in the camera department? I mean its 3 months already. We talking months not days.

Also so very disappointed by the Edge 30 "Ultra".
Even my aged ZTE Axon 30 Ultra received the October security patch today.
This phone using the Snapdragon 888 SoC reports the following video capabilities to 3rd party apps (here what ProShot Evaluator sees, bottom, in German)

More video options, and also in the still image section there is also HEIC.
And now what the Edge 30 Ultra reports
Video on the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra the Edge 30 Ultra is lacking:
Color profiles for video
Cinematic mode (simulating large aperture lens)

[Q] Xperia Z1 Record 4K videos

I was planning to get a new Xperia Z1 (but it is not released yet in my country /Iraq/ ) and I was saying
Can any Dev hack it to get it recording the 4K videos
I mean the crappy note 3 can ?? why the Z1 can`t ?? they have the same SD 800 and i don`t think the ram has any effect Because the note 3 need it to run those useless bloatware and sam`s ****s
also can it be cracked to get higher framerate like 60 [email protected] or 120 [email protected] like slowmotions videos??
+1
I have the same questions since Z1 was offically released
It's possible. Someone might hack the Z1 camera app to support 4K video and 720/1080P video at higher framerates. Although I also think it's a possibility Sony will add this with an official update.
For now we have to wait for Sony anyway, to fix their bootloader unlock. After that developers can try and add features, until then though, nothing I guess..

Yeah I would say the same, obviously something went wrong with the camera SW with all those problems so I think they dropped the 4k support in order to fix the other problems(grain and low light performance) before adding in other additional features. We all know Sony always f*ck up the first 1-3 months on their SW but after that we may well indeed see A LOT of Camera mods.
Sony always seemed to be in a rush to launch products, then release sub standard firmwares etc, good to see nothing has changed. All it does is gives them bad reviews because the people doing the reviews have buggy substandard software.
If Sony really want to get serious about being at least number 2 in the android space they need to get their act together, so when the phone is launched and tested/reviewed that the reviewers go nuts on how great everything is. Then peoples decisions are likely to be swayed.
The good news is the the hardware is capable to support 4k
What's this fascination with being able to record in 4k when the chances of anyone having a 4k display to play it back on is practically nill?
Is it bragging rights?

No, it's future proofing and innovation. I would have killed to have the 20 year old videos of me in 1080p, let alone 720p instead of crappy VHS PAL quality. If possible, I would shoot everything in 1080p 3D or 4k 3D.
Why not record in the best possible quality and then be happy in a few years because you can then enjoy it fully?
can z1 record slow motion videos
Here's an interesting piece of info, I wonder if Stuff know something we don't...
I rate Stuff pretty Informative and enjoy reading their magazine, I haven't had one for a few months so decided to download their latest magazine which came out yesterday. On page 22 there's a page on the Z1 and well as you will see from my 2nd image they've put about it "Special moves including encoding and decoding and 4K video and 7.1 virtual surround sound."
Now I know that it doesn't say the camera records in 4k and they are referring to the Snapdragon 800 chip, but saying that in the first paragraph about its features; I find this really interesting because the phone doesn't show 4k so what else would they refer to 4k?
Thoughts?

Any word on software updates to optimize/improve Camera?

I remember during the Idol 3 launch that there were issues initially (DTTW not working, snapchat bugs, etc) that were addressed in subsequent updates. These things were swept under the rug for reviewers but for people who actually owned the phone, they were able to benefit.
Currently my main concern is the camera and I was curious if anyone has heard any news on Alcatel working to try and improve the OIS or low-light capabilities via software (if that is even possible).

I don't have this exactly device, but I have the twin brother (Vodafone Smart Platinum 7) and I wrote to a Vodafone customer manager about this.
They told me they will talk with the people in the software department, and maybe in a future they can improve a little the software, but the lack of hardware can't be fixed with software.
My main complain was that the photos most of the time are blurry when trying to see the details, and that we have no stabilization for 60fps and 2K-4K.

Thanks. I've heard good things about the Vodafone version. I currently have the Idol 3, and coming from the Nexus 4 before that, it was a big improvement in terms of photo quality. I've been using my Idol 3 for photos a lot recently and although it is great for well-lit, non-moving objects, I have become more aware of the lower quality pics in low-light and blurry pics in general when there is slight movement. I think the Idol 4S is a step up in terms of quality but still leaves something to be desired overall.
Recently I ended up getting a reasonably-priced digital camera which takes great photos. It really illustrated how good a camera can be. I might just get the Idol 4S and carry my digital camera with me for special occasions.
Updated yesterday to version 010 02 with the august security patches with the Mobile Upgrade Q desktop programm. Camera seems better imo opinion (at least with sufficient light!) and overall performance seems faster and snappier then before. Caution: upgrading with Q will flash the whole rom and wipes the device!. Idol 4S 6070K Netherlands. Realy love the devices`s performance and especialy the great speakers
Saw a video review with a blind comparison to the S7 for photos/videos.
Lowlight is pretty meh and video bounces around a lot, but the well lit areas really give the S7 a run for it's money.
It sounds like the key to using the camera is A) Good lighting and B)Keep a steady hand

Pretty much is about the steady hand, because with this you can make nice pictures.
I attach some pictures I made with the phone.

As long as you keep it steady, it indeed does a good job.
HRD is really nice for low lights situations, but again, you must be really steady when taking the pictures.
Regarding the manual mode, is also nice to play with it and you can get some nice results as well.
Manual mode is great for macro and long exposure shots. My friend who works for TCL told me an update to Android Nougat is already under development but no release date is known as of yet.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Lenovo P2 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I wonder what sensor the phone is using. The EU version P2A42 is using the Sony IMX258. But the P2C72 (Chinese global version seems to be using the Sony Exmor RS)?

Do you have any reference for that info? I didn't see any hardware specs that confirm it.
https://www3.lenovo.com/in/en/smartphones/p-series/Vibe-Lenovo-P2/p/PPIPPIP2C72
it says only Sony camera, but not which one :-/
here http://www.livemint.com/Leisure/JGS...amera-proves-just-megapixels-dont-matter.html it says that it is Sony IMX258
Photos taken by P2 are awful. They have lots of noises even on the lowest ISO and they lack details. Camera is the biggest disadvantage of this smartfone. But I love it anyway because of battery and performance.

Strange on kimovil there was other info. The chinese version had a Sony Exmor.
https://www.kimovil.com/en/compare/lenovo-vibe-p2,lenovo-vibe-p2-32gb
Now both are 1:1 the same.. Hmm. But yeah anyways my old phone had a better camera. I was kinda disappointed, and also the software is terrible. It's full of bugs, I will root this sucker soon.
The rear camera is imx258 and the front camera is a ov5695.

P2's low light camera performance can be noticeably improved!
If your P2 is rooted and you have enabled Camera2 Api, please try yourself a Snap Camera HDR app ( It's avaiable in a Play Store in both Trial and Pro version, you can also find pro version cracked, erm...let's say, in the Internet. )
I've found this guy's guide in the Redmi Note 4 thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/themes/google-camerawith-hdr-mido-t3656196/post74676264#post74676264. My phone is running the unofficial LOS 14.1 and...it really makes a diffrence.
Photos are being made for over a second and then about 10 seconds takes processing them (you can made another photo in the meantime).
All of these photos were made without any tripod, sometimes I sat down or leaned against the lamppost/wall but nothing really crazy(maybe 30 photos). Some photos are maybe a bit out of focus after close-up (EDIT: After seeing photos in the laptop I think that photos without "tap to focus" tend to be a bit sharper) and some of them are a little overexpossed after touch-to-focus (They don't after pressing the camera button without tapping to focus before), anyway you can play with a metering area setting(I wasn't), but...see it for yourself.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157690966808425/
The P2 didn't magically became the S8 or the flagship camera but in my opinion photos are acceptable now.
What do you think?

Have you tried the Google camera hdr app?
Yes, I have. HDR+ doesn't work.

G7 Plus camera, is f/1.7 or f/1.8 the real aperture??

The G7 Plus supposedly has f/1.7 aperture, but the EXIF information in the jpeg photos taken with the device shows an aperture of f/1.8. And also a relatively high iso automatically set in mid light conditions seems to support that 1.8 is indeed the aperture.
I also search in various G7 Plus reviews in which is stated that the aperture is 1.7, but the photo samples I downloaded from these reviews also has the metadata info of 1.8.
The G7 Plus is supposedly better than the other members of the family in various aspects (ois, 16mp...) and also in the aperture, which is very important, but I'm not sure that it has indeed f/1.7
So, what is the real aperture of the device?
Perhaps is only a software issue showing the incorrect value, but as I can see "it acts as having" 1.8
Thanks
Hmm.. all my photo's show an aperture of f/1.7

I just checked as well and my pics are f/1.7. I tried both GCam and the default camera app.
Mmm... Perhaps it is a software bug, reporting the incorrect number.
My phone has Android version 9 and compilation number PPW29.98-17-3.
Also if you see in this two reviews, for example, the original photo files can be downloaded and it has the info F1.8 the same as my phone
https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g7_plus-review-1887p5.php
https://www.dxomark.com/motorola-moto-g7-plus-camera-review/
This is strange... Perhaps it is an error given the fact that the other members of the family have 1.8 and the code wasn't properly adaptated for the Plus, and 1.8 just stay there without anyone changing it... I don't know.
The thing is also that the phone tends to automatically use higher ISO than I should spect from a F1.7 phone. Perhaps this is also a bug from a code originally designed for the others F1.8 members of the family.
What Android version and compilation number do you have?
Note: this is a carrier branded phone.
Thanks

Yeah that's odd eh. Not sure what it could be on your end.
I'm on 10, QPWS30.61-21-9, non-branded factory unlocked RETLA . Are there any differences perhaps between xt1965-2 and xt1965-3 devices ?
I don't know, it will be good to know.
Mine is the xt1965-2 version.
I'll be glad to know if other users has 1.7 or 1.8.
My phone is still under warranty for 12 month, so I won't update it to Android 10 until there is an official OTA update.
I'll be posting here when I update to Android 10 and report if the F aperture change from 1.8 to 1.7, and if it start acting as it indeed has an F1.7 real aperture.
Thanks
Reporting back.
After update to Android 10 compilation QPWS30.61-21-9, now photos have in the EXIF information f/1.7.
Nevertheless I must say that I doubt that it indeed has a real 1.7 camera, sorry. It would strange for Motorola to make a fraude on this, I know, but the ISO values of the photos are generally big values like 1764 in regular light conditions, that in not consistent with f1.7.
I have a Samsung S7 edge with f1.7 and in same light conditions and obturation time, it use iso much smaller like 200.

Question RAW Support for all cameras (inc.Telephoto not only main/ultra.w) on S21, S21 Ultra Exynos

The Samsung S21 series is an amazing flagship phone featured in 2021. It's great in many aspects. Though I think there are issues. The issue is that I don't think that we are getting the most out of this great hardware. Us owners of the S21 are not happy that a company which sells phones for over 1000euros won't add features which the users want such as full RAW support. We want RAW on all the cameras, not just the main and ultra wide ones. The telephoto cameras are not available in Pro mode. It would help people in many ways. Some people want the ability to do the post processing manually. This will result to get the most out of the photo if it was shot in RAW format.

As usual we have to ask for basic stuff that should be enforced by Google on every android devices...
The Samsung dev forum doesn't work.
You should also create one on consumer forum.
Anyway on both forum Samsung doesn't care...

Sorry but I don't understand this. You can switch between ultra wide and wide lens on pro mode and both have RAW support.
Do you mean that samsung enable all camera options in pro mode? If that's the case then please fix the title and description or else you won't have any proper backing on that petition.

We just want Samsung to stop ****ing around as usual : release raw sensor access to other apps than their native ones
I've made a feature request at samsung developers forum. Maybe you guys can help me upvoting it:
RAW/Pro mode for tele cameras on S21 Ultra
Yes a full Camera2api support in all lenses required with RAW10 Support as same device in US region support it but international model doesn’t.
