Question Always On Display disturbing the fingerprint sensor - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

When AOD is activated on the S21 Ultra the finger print sensor more often that not refuse to recognise the finger print .
I did all the necessary steps, wiped out partition , recorded the prints few times but nothing. It is a long standing issue with that model for me.The moment the AOD is disabled all is back to normal.
Any ideas?
Regards.

This is the first I've heard of this, but maybe that's what's been frustrating me about how my fingerprints seem to not be recognized? I never looked for this pattern before...
Anyone else have any ideas?

Yes, i stopped using the AON and all is working swimmingly .
It did not matter what i tried , on Samsung S21 Ultra there was no other way.

Fingerprint sensor stops working

Had my S8 plus for about a month now. Every 2-3 days or so, the fingerprint sensor stops working just randomly. Will work perfectly, then just out of nowhere, doesn't respond to anything. Disabling fingerprint security and re-enabling doesn't fix it. Trying to go into applications- system apps- fingerprints, and trying to force close it won't work as it's grayed out. The only thing that works to get it working again is a restart. Not the end of the world I know, but having to restart it at the most inopportune times is kind of annoying. And paying this much for what amounts to the top of the line phone on the market right now, and having one the most important functions just stop working all the time is crap. And no I don't want to use the iris scanner, or pin, or pattern security. I want to use the fingerprint sensor.
Searches around the web indicate this is pretty common. Anyone else on the VZW S8 or plus having this issue? Anyone know if a fix is coming down the pipeline? I'm pretty sure this would be a software issue as it works 85% of the time and a simple restart gets it working again.

Some other threads on XDA have said that disabling fingerprint scanner gestures fixes it. I haven't ever used those and I have never had a problem with the sensor. It isn't as good as the sensor on my Moto Z Force Droid was, but it is pretty good.

Yeah, I disabled that last night. Waiting to see if that works or not. Just thought I would post in the Verizon specific forum to see if any other Verizon users are having this issue. Pretty sure it's a software issue, and am just curious about differences between the Verizon software and other carrier specific software.
Always had the gestures disabled and I have noticed this, but it always goes away with time for me. I thought it was just because I was sweaty at the gym, but it doesn't even know that I am attempting to use the scanner. Then, it happened outside the gym. Goes away in just a couple minutes, thought it was just me.
It seems that the fingerprint scanner is more reliable when the screen is off than it is when the lockscreen is on looking for iris scan.

Issues with Fingerprint Scanner

I've had my Note9 (Tmo) since release, so about 2 weeks now. Usually a quick tap of my finger on the fingerprint scanner and the phone immediately jumps to life and I'm on the home screen. But today it's acting erratically. Now it takes like 5 or 6 presses for it to register, and that's only after I turn the phone on first (it won't skip sleep and go directly to the home screen anymore).
I tried a rebooting, recreating my prints, as well as making sure the scanner is wiped perfectly clean, and that worked... But only for a little while, the issue has come right back.
Anyone else seeing similar issues?
Do other sensors work as expected?
On my previous Note8, when sensors stop working due to hardware fault, the fingerprints also did not work.
BTW I have not experienced the same issue on my Note9 yet.
Are you using a theme? If so that could be the issue. Uninstall theme and try fingerprint again.
Wash your hands.
I also have this issue, it's pretty annoying. On the lockscreen, the phone says "fingerprint-sensor not responding, try again later", and that's it. Tried wiping cache from the recovery menu, nothing.
Try typing *#0*# into the dialer and go to sensors test, should be able to determine if your finger print reader is faulty or not there.
Try cleaning the fingerprint scanner or using a wet wipe on your finger. As the lack of moisture is probably what is causing this issue. It happened to me a few times in HK.
I have the same issue.
My scanner is now telling my "fingerprint wet." But my fingers aren't wet, and I wiped the scanner down several times. Like the OP says, it works for 1 or 2 swipes, then won't recognize my fingerprint.
I'm having the same issue with my Note9. In my case, the problem happens ONLY if I had my phone in my pocket more than 1 minute, the fingerprint sensor just won't work, it's not like it doesn't recognize it, it's dead. I have to wait about 10 seconds putting my finger on the sensor 'til it works. I have tried everything. I'm pretty sure it's something in the software related to the phone being in my pocket (not because the phone's been idle), because when I go to bed and put my phone on the table, the next morning I just grab my phone and immediately the fingerprint sensor takes me to my home screen, no problem.

Do you guys have solution to this I been having this issue for a month or so now and i think it is getting worse.
Hi guys, be brave and call Samsung. The phone is under warranty.
They will collect it and drop it off for free, after repairing it and putting your phone back to water and dust resistant.
It took me about 10 days all together, if not less.

I've had samsung repair experienced before my Galaxy s8+ it took them about 5 business days turn around repair it was just software issue.. But with this fingerprint if it's just software glitch or setting i rather do that first but if not I might have do warranty claim.. it always take 2-3 tap for me to work on the fingerprint this is way way slower than my S9+.. Did you have fingerprint issue?
It is definitely not software. Days i have spent uninstalling apps and themes and testing and then resettimg it all and so on and so forth!
It seemed at the beginning that a factory reset is enough, but next day it would start again.
It finally gave up and i have called Samsung, as i do not buy insurrance for my phones and they sorted me out.
I knew it was not software when i have booted the Note into safe mode and it behaved just the same.

Sorry, forgot to quote you in my reply above.
Anyway, now after the repair, the Note responds diferently, it unlocks fast as hell using the fingerprint.
Try erasing all your fingerprints and re-registering them all over again. As sometimes your fingerprint settings maybe corrupted by a OS update.

Mine isn't like that. Fingerprint sensor works once the device is already in use but once in sleep mode for awhile it will take 2-3 taps for it to unlock and it doesnt happen all the time so My issue is sensor sensitivity and it seems to me that the sensor is not getting any power once in sleep mode to save battery that's why it is less sensitive that's just my opinion. But I already made a ticket to samsung and unfortunately the repair center which I dont trust at all the uBreakifix do not have the sensor in stock. So I may have to call in to ship out my phone.

The test shows RESET: Failed. Everything else is a PASS. It must be a hardware problem. I am getting random reboots while on standby when the fingerprint sensor is turned on.

fingerprint unlock is acting up

Day 3 with my S10+ and after two days where the fingerprint sensor worked "reasonably well", today it refused to unlock, no matter in which angle, which one of my 3 registered fingers and no matter how much pressure (or almost no pressure) I applied. Only device restart solved the problem.
And yes, I have all the latest updates (at least the Day One that tmobile released...)
Is anyone else experiencing the same?

Edit: forgot to say my wife is also having troubles with fingerprint as well

Same here. My Note 9 fingerprint reader was far superior. Has anyone tried removing the pre-installed screen protector? I wonder if it would help. I may try it and/or return the phone for a different model. Frustrating

Also, have you gotten the FP reader update yet? I know unlocked AT&T models got it last night. Definitely helps.
mine working fine stock screen protector all updates done. received @6 March and its exynos indian variant S10+ G975F
Sent from my SM-G975F
Working fine here. Have exynos version. It initially didn't work for one of my thumb. I deleted it and again register it using every angle. Its working fine after that. Maybe Samsung released it too early without testing much.

Received my galaxy s10 on March 6th. I was super excited but my excitement fizzled down after testing fingerprint scanner. That thing just would not work. It worked like 20 percent of the time. Some times I would try 5 times in a row and it would fall all the time. I had registered two thumbs twice but that didn't help. I went through a lot of threads on XDA and other forums and gathered all the suggestions. Figured out some of the things that worked for me.
Here is what you need to do to make it at least 80-90 percent reliable.
1. Upgrade to ASBA version of the firmware. I am not sure which region you are from but Samsung just released a firmware update which was about 440 MB. This should already help a ton.
2. After you upgrade, go to settings and search for "touch sensitivity". Go to the setting and turn it on. This will increase touch sensitivity of the display. It may use a bit more battery but I have not noticed any difference.
3. Now remove all your fingerprints. Click add finger. This time, when scanning finger do following.
A. Start with the middle of your thumb. Not the edge of the thumb. The part that is about half cm inside. Press that portion and don't do much of a sideway motion till you reach about 80 percent. Now use the edge of the thumb and try to move the edge a bit to reach 100 percent.
B. Add the same finger again. This time start with edge and try to get to 80 percent without much motion. Then use middle of thumb to reach 100 percent.
C. Do the same for other thumb. Also don't register your thumb in vertical position. Just register the way you would hold a phone and try to scan your thumb. Close to horizontal may be at 5-10 degree.
You may be required to press a bit hard while registering your finger but this is not needed to unlock the phone.
3. Now turn off the screen and try to unlock the device without turning on the screen. I know it is a bit hard. Just go with the feeling and press gently with middle of the thumb where you think the scanner is. Note that this is not capacitive scanner that you just touch and done. Put your thumb with a gentle press and leave it there for may be 1 second.
4. Screen should come on and phone should unlock. If it didn't work then turn off the screen and then tap it once to start always on display. This will show you the scanner on screen. Just gently press and hold for 1 second.
I have noticed that the scanner does not work when the finger is super dry. But I think after the update it has gotten better. I had initiated a return for this device and was planning to just get an iPhone. But after the upgrade I decided to keep it and trade in my galaxy note 8.
This is really worrying me. I don't want the gimmick / novelty instead of reliability
Mine is perfect. Installed the update and removed the screen protector it came with and fitted an aftermarket one my local phone shop sold. I get a failed attempt maybe 2 times a day because I haven't had my finger on the right spot
Initially I had the same issue , things I have done which resolved the issue
1 Most important, update the software version. Recent version has fingerprint issue fix.
2 Enable touch sensitivity from settings
3 Add same finger twice , i prefer to add my thumb finger in horizontal position same way you hold your phone
The only trick people miss out is they do not cover the entire sensor while unlocking...just a small adjustment and the fps is as fast and reliable as any in the market.
I initially had his problem trying with part of the sensor covered and i thought it was horrible.
Infact if you cover the sensor wholly you dont need the touch sensitivity turned on as well. I have it mine switched off.
---------- Post added at 05:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 AM ----------
Another tip that worked for me is...while registering the fingerprint, hold the phone as you would while you unlock the device and scan the same position of the finger with minimal movement until it flashes 80%.

Fingerprint sensor gone
Hi, I'm new here
After I restore factory default of my S10, because it was consuming battery too fast, the fingerprint sensor stop work.
At the samsung's members app I did the interactive check of the sensor and said it is ok.
The phone and apps are update.
I try everything to restore the sensor but had no success. Does anybody knows what could be, and if it is a software problem and how to restore?
Thank you

Question S21 ULTRA fingrrprint much worse than on s20 ultra

On my new S21 ultra my thumbs can't be recognized.... even cant fix it with S20 ultra trick (disable biometric app from battery optimization, quick tap with left and right thumb..)
I just disabled Fingerprint recognizion cos it is useless. I tried for me that 10 days... It is just very veery bad....
I haven't had any issues with the fingerprint reader. Works 100% of the time for me. Do you have a screen protector on it?
no issues here, its way faster than my s20 ultra I traded in, I add 2 thumb prints for each thumbs and works perfect
Mine works as well, included with a glass screen protector

Odd, have you tried wiping the phone and start over? Like everyone else here, my s21 ultra has 0 misses (even with screen protector), it's faster than the one in the Note 20 Ultra. If wiping doesnt work, it might be a defective unit maybe?
Mine is working great also! Im really impressed with the speed that it recognizes my thumb as well. Im an auto mechanic and often have dirty fingers while unlocking and using my phone. NO PROBLEMS!
Mine is waaaaaay better than the s20. Record like 4 of the same fingerprint. I even have a whitestone on, works great...
Fingerprint is better than my Note 10 + but nowhere near as good as Huawei P30 Pro was or Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro.
Turning on the extra sensitivity in the options helps but still do not get 100% recognition, lucky if I get 75%.
Hm it is better if I use battery optimization on biometric app... now it is working great
Suuuuuuuuux. Don't work every time I take a shower.... Fingerprint sensor just don't work on any of my finger. Even cant add new one .. just don't recognize fingerprint...
There's nothing wrong the S21 Ultra's fingerprint sensor. Seems like either bought an S20 and regret it or you bought a S21 Ultra that was defective.
Do you have screen protector on?
I too think it sucks. Useless as it fails three times in a row deactivating the finger print login on my bank for example. It's no good
I have original screen protector.
P.S. I changed screen protector on S20 fingerprint sensor and it is much better now.
On S21 is much worse... It works good one day, other day nothing works. Special after I take a shower... Fingerprint can't be readable.... Don't know how to fix it
It doesn't work at all for me either. I just gave up and use facial recognition now.

Also strange, it's fine on my end.
Could be the shower "softens" the skin on your finger?
On the other hand, if it works no matter what on your previous device, maybe the S21U you have is defective, and you could ask for a replacement.
S20 ultra was trash in every department compared to s21 ultra so must be defective or a strong screen protector that's all I can think of,as it's way better
Enabling touch sensitivity for me helped quite a bit with the stock screen protector on, but it's still way worse than the Xiaomi I came from. I'm not sure why but it feels like half the time it fails on the first try. Maybe I'll try taking the protector off and see how that goes.
Before enabling touch sensitivity I was having my fingerprint fail 5 times in a row prompting the lock happen at least every couple of days, even after re-scanning fingerprints. I just feel like it might be the screen protector though.
And now all of a sudden it workes FLOWLESLY EVERYTIME FOR A LAST FEW DAYS... HOPE IT WILL STILL THAT WAY

I really can't find this option in Settings.
It is just not there, not in the list under Apps > Special access, not by searching in the bar, not in Battery settings..
I wish I could try to disable the biometric service from the Battery Optimization but I really can't find out how.
Any tips?
Thank you.

Question Finger print and lock screen

The success rate hit of the finger print scanner is much lower with the lock screen than with the screen saver. While with the screen saver it is effective and quick , it more often than not that with the lockscreen the fingerprint identification is rejected.
Any ideas? solutions? I already deleted and printed new finger print few times already.
I find that it's total garbage. It works about 10% of the time and I've redone adding my prints over and over. I've tried most of the steps others have and find that it doesn't help. Someone said to do a factory reset and no I'm not going to do that. I just don't use it anymore and will probably get rid of this phone soon. I want to use SD cards again and have more memory as 512 is just not enough. The reader on the Note 9 was so much better.
Not sure what you guys are doing or not doing, but my print reads all the time whether screen is on or off. Get use to where the sensor is also make sure you don't have dry hands
No complaints here. Work 99 out of 100 times on both screens
Can't complain either, working perfect here and very fast, too... Btw with stock screen protector, if that matters....

Are you using a screen protector/shield?
I have learnt I need to press harder. I used to have a Pixel 2 XL FPR on the back which was really sensitive. Using a phone with FPR under-screen was new for me, you do need to be firmer when pressing your finger down and after training myself for a few days I don't have any issue with unlocking now. I have fitted two S21Ultras (mine and friends)with the White Dome tempered glass and that has not impacted us either.

It's hard to miss where the sensor is as it's pointed out on the screen when using it. As for dried hands that too seems not to matter.
Folks I'm guessing you think you're being helpful when you say that you're not having a problem with your phone as a response to someone who is have a problem. To me that's like me taking my car to a mechanic and telling them my car isn't working properly and them telling me that their car is working just fine. I worked for many years as a computer consultant at a major university in upstate NY and never once did I respond in this fashion because it's pointless.
But he was wondering if his phone was faulty..you being an analyst should realise that if most of the replies are positive that in itself helps him

Hi.
No , as it was unpacked from the box.
This has started to be an issue on my a.o.d.
Was ok but I changed the icon and it seems to be hit and miss now.
I just double tap the screen and bypass it

My Icons also changed , so that might be the issue.
Problems solved. The cause of very low hit rate of the fingerprint scanner on AOD in lock screen was new icons i dowloaded from Galaxy store. When i installed the original , no more missed prints
No complaints here. But it completely works
