When new phones are released, I always find this confusing, and have difficulty tracking down accurate information. Perhaps writing it down here, and getting feedback from the community, can help some other people:

Typically there are lists suggesting which model corresponds to which geographic market. I'll work to track that info down, and add it here.

Looking through the firmware listings on sammobile (and Kimovi for S911E) here are approximate geographic regions for models:
SM-S911B -- Europe / Africa / Middle East / Oceania
SM-S911B/DS -- (assumed same as above, Dual SIM)

SM-S911U1 -- USA ( factory unlocked )

Wow. I just realized that S23 has no Exynos models anymore. Has the Samsung gods answered our prayers to finally bring bootloader unlocking to Snapdragons or will it stay locked?

@webhook Right?!?! If I'm understanding correctly, this XDA article says:
... the bootloader of the US and Canadian Snapdragon models can't be unlocked, a design which essentially forced most of the modding jobs centered around the Exynos-powered editions. This changes with the Galaxy S23 series, as all regional variants are now powered by a modified Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

Sounds like our prayers have indeed been answered!
And I think this post by @afaneh92 shows that's right :-D In fact, they have several examples of custom recoveries running on S23 models.
The reason I'd started this tread was becausefor the S22 I had all kinds of hassles trying to weigh which variant was the right choice; the US models couldn't be unlocked, but the international ones didn't have quite all the right radio bands/frequencies. I never ended up buying the S22 because of it.
Seems like that's all a thing of the past.

On another thread, someone else has indicated it's possible we may be celebrating too early. Apparently it is possible that, Sammy used a uniform chipset, and still went out of their way to create extra bootloader locks for specific region variants.
I pm'd afaneh92 to try to clear this up.
If my excitement has led us astray, I deeply apologize.

Although I've read through more than a 100 posts, I still wonder if there is any major or significant difference between the two models...
Specifically, I'm debating if the N920I can work smoothly in a network where the official sold device is the N920C ? Is there any foreseen performance degradation or incompatibility issues ?

I'm using 920i in Brazil, where the C model seems to be the official one. The phone is working great and smoothly.

Will the Mi5 come with unlockable LTE bands ?

As I've come to believe from various sources the official supported bands are as follows:
4G FDD-LTE bands 1 / 3 / 7
4G TDD-LTE bands 38 / 39 / 40 / 41
3G TD-SCDMA bands 34 / 39
3G WCDMA bands 1 / 2 / 5 / 8
3G CDMA 2000 bands BC0 / BC1
2G GSM bands 2 / 3 / 5 / 8
2G CDMA 1X BC0 / BC1
Now since I live in europe .. my ISP's most used 4g (LTE) band is 20 (800mhz) and so it is not supported..
Will it be possible to unlock this band via QPST - QXDM modification, or has the band been disabled on the hardware side of the chip itself ?
I know it's very early on, but I have been anticipating the arrival of MI5 for months now, only to find a lack of european LTE support ...

Well, that does only mean that the device does not officially support others bands. The question however was, if other bands can be unlocked.

We'll all just probably have to wait until someone has one in hand and can test some different SIM Card to see what it actually will support... Needless to say though is if someone at least tests with either a TMO SIM or ATT SIM and they work.... one can assume that all 18 bands do... now it's a waiting game

I'm pretty sure it will not have all of those bands. Out of luck if you want to use this and are on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T or T-Mobile.
They just updated the supported bands and they have some of my country.. But I don't understand quite well the difference in the 800hz to 1800 to even 2600.. if for example my device catches the 1800 band but not the others, will the signal be good, or to be perfect in need to pick them all?
Also, higher frequency means better signal?

Yes is it confirmed ! But if many people say it Xiaomi can't make Lte Global because Samsung and Apple don't want this...

The question has not actually been answered: is anyone aware of any possibilities to unlock, via a kernel perhaps, the bands which should be supported by the hardware?
There's a good chance if you can unlock bootloader, Hugo Barra said in an interview that the India version will have those unlocked and not the model sold in China.

Perhaps wireless calling. The phone might be compatible to handle wireless calls, but I know AT&T is infamous for turning features off unless you buy the phones from them.

Most likely two things, Wifi Calling and VOLTE. AT&T blocks these features on all unlocked phones that I've had so far.

I'm not sure about available bands, but I've been getting blazing fast download speeds in off peak hours (83MBps), and reasonable speeds at other times. Just got my z3 Play today, and love it so far.

Update! Volte or HD Voice does in fact work on At&t. You have to either call At&t or go online if you have a business account and change the IMEI to an At&t phone. I can confirm that Volte works once you change the IMEI.
Update: Volte wors on Cricket Wireless too!

Hi, I assume you have the phone. How long ago did you you set it up ? Meaning, did it at any point reversed VoLTE connectivity and defaulted back to HSPA only? I've seen some people making it work on other phones (after the IMEI trick) but as soon system recognizes - reads the right IMEI, the function is gone.

So I first just swapped the Sim from my Note 8 and Volte was working. After a few calls it went back to HSPA during calls. A few days later I manually entered the IMEI in Premier and it stuck. That was over a week ago, and a million calls later. I'm still on Volte when making calls. Some calls even have a little HD symbol next to the call time to let me know I'm experiencing an HD Voice call.
That's interesting to hear. The problem is that I don't have that option to manually change IMEI, because my account is not Premier or Business. When you say Premier, can you clarify if that's just another name for business or something else? I have all things ATT - TV, internet and wireless, so I'm wondering if I can get some special treatment too.
Also, I don't have the phone neither, so not sure if it would work on OG ZPlay or Z2 Play. Definitely would. love to try it. when I tried with the Customer Rep changing IMEI for me I didn't work on any of the phones I mentioned.

Yes Premier is their business account portal. You should be able to use the IMEI from another at&t phone and call customer care as well. As long as they choose the right plan, Volte should work. Not sure about the OG ZPlay, I feel like I tried it before and it didn't work with that phone. Never had the Z2 Play so I can't speak to that phone. Tried to upload a picture of it but my phone won't cooperate right now.

Just tried with Z2 play and submitted the IMEI over the phone (for Z2 force ATT edition) and it didn't work not even for a second. I guess I gotta wait out a bit for the price to drop and have Motorola release more colors for Z3 play

Hello, is there any way of enabling carrier aggregation on mi8? I can't get 4.5g working, on my mix 2 it was working by default

Sorry, here in Brazil we have a lot of denominations. and yes it is the LTE+ or 4G+, usually i say LTE+, i don't know why i write 4.5G.
Im living in Austria and on some places i saw the 4G+ signal on my Mi8. So, i can tell you, thats its working.

B3+B7 doesn't work, so, no LTE+ for half of the world LOL.

Brazil uses B28 band to 4G+ and B28 is not supported by MI8.
Yes here vodafone greece B3 B7 and B20 for LTE

LOL Don't say this kind of things LOL
4G+ is 2 bands at the same time, not one.... LOL
We have 2 bands in some citys, like manaus, B3 and B7
And others the B28 is getting to work now, like SP with 3 bands B3 , B7 and B28, they are ALL 4G CELLS
When you put together 2 bands like B3+B7 you get the 4G+....Doesn't matter if you have 28...

How about 4G/LTE-signal on this phone?

In my country we use B3, B7 and B20. I currently have Pocophone F1 and it's LTE should work in those bandwiths but it doesn't.

4g works fine in Ireland on EU model, but signal is sometimes weak but likely down to my provider
I live in Italy (B20) and I've never had a single signal problem. Never had any connection loss or weak signal (maybe a little lower but because of operator, but no calls or internet problems).

Yeah I know.
Even my current Pocophone should work here in Finland but it doesn't. And that's a bummer because I pay for 100 Mb network and all I get is 20.
