Sliding lens cover for Kaiser/Tytn 2/Tilt - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

How about a replacement back to our phone that has a protected lens cover that can slide over the camera lens when not in use, but slide open when in use. We all know that the stock plastic cover get's smudged and scratched with daily use which causes poor picture quality. Some of us even go as far as taking off the back of the phone when they want to take a good picture. If someone were to market a replacement back to our phone which incorporated nice sliding lense cover, I would definitely pay money for it. I would definitely like it to maintain the nice styling of stock battery cover. What do you guys think? How do we make this happen?

I'd pay for it too!!!, lets hope seidio!!!

Yes i think i would pay for that too, if the price was reasonable.

Big difference: With and without backcover!

Hey people, look at these 2 pictures, that I just have taken:
With the backcover on:
http://www.4shared.com/file/53179104/2a29789d/Med_cover.html
And without:

As you can see, there is a big difference. Hmm, why haven't HTC done something to this problem?
Are you sure you were at the same distance?
And what about the focus point? It seems a bit different between the 2 pics.....

Yes I'm very sure about that. I have tried with more pictures.
did you stick a 'lense protector' on the cover's lense screen? like if you stuck on a full body protector like invisibleSHIELD there'll be a piece for the lense cover too.
Or, did you forget to peel off the original one?

Haha, no i'm not that stupid Nothing "protection" is on.
the "lens" that is part of the back cover is obviously not optically neutral. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Without the back cover, the Diamond takes decent pictures, still slow on focusing and shutter release(you should see the Samsung F480, this little fellow shoots pictures almost like a normal digital cam) but pretty good for a 3.2 MP cam.
WITH back cover however, the pictures look like crap to me. Sometimes it looks like if the pictures have been taken through light fog and I can clean the lens cover as much as I want(not easy, tiny little bastard), after some time, the lens gets dirty/whatever again. Horrible, HTC definetely needs to find a better solution.

It will "destroy" the backcover? hmm. And when the mirror is gone, dust can easier come into the camera lens?

Yes, of course the quality will increase, when a cheap plastic cover is removed But hmm, my Diamond is 2 days old, and I don't want to already destroy a part of the cover

well ideally you should or you should remember not to put you fingers on the lens (not an easy task given the camera position i know) but lets be fair here, i mean its not as if you would take your stand alone digital camera, smear you greasy hands over the lens all day (+ let dust collect on it) and then expect it to take perfect pics...
be practical, if you remove the case screen for long you are gonna end up with scratches on the actual camera lens! and that's not easily replaceable now is it (not like the back cover...) lol

What we need is a back cover with a piece of glass in place of the piece of plastic which covers the lense.
This seems like the only solution to me.
Its because the plastic isnt very durable, it does mist up the photos. If you look on coolsmartphone.com ive also took some pictures and they looked alot better without the back plastic cover on.
I just hope someone somewhere is reading this as i would pay for a back cover with glass instead of plastic lense cover.
The pictures are alot sharper and arent misty without the cover on.

Your right!
white balance
Granted the backcover lens protector doesn't do justice to this phone. Adjusting the white balance does for improvement (say the lighhtbulb mode) I find. Again the camera does let this phone down, compared to others of similar spec. Can a software tweak solve the lag in motion when shooting in video mode at all? Is it as a 'simple' case as that I wonder!?
I just did some test shots with my xda diamond from germany and I honestly cant see a difference. can you tell which one is taken with the cover off?

Modding your Camera Lens

I'd like to say Thank You to everyone in this forum and providing such a great site for us. I am very admire all yours talent that I wish I have, but I don't. I did I a little mod to my Tilt camera lens and it came out good and I'd like to share it with you all. This mod require no drilling to original lens and look oem.
1. A piece of Micro Slice Glass. 20 cents
(used for microscope, you can get it from science store)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
2. Knife sharpening stone, fine gain.
3. Glass cutting tool $6
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
4. Qtip
5. Double side tape
Instruction:Sorry I don't know how to attach pictures into my post. Have to link it to Flickr. Hope you don't mind.
-To remove the lens, use a Qtip & push the lens out from the back side of the cover, use your figure nail to lift the lens out from the chrome frame.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2913195413/in/photostream/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914041602/in/photostream/
-Use the lens to mark the size onto the Micro Slice Glass and cutting it with the glass cutting tools, you may need to try a few time to have a straight cut. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
-Now you have the piece cut out, here the fun part. use a sharpening stone and work near the sink cause you need to wet the stone during the sanding.
while sanding the new lens, use the original lens to check the shape. I made my a bit bigger then the original so it can be fit in tight without using any glue. Double side tape used just for insurance purposes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914080332/
-Here the final product.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914250782/
-That's it folks, this is the best and the cheapest and the oem look camera lens mod ever. Here some shots I took before and after. Let me know what you think. Pictures are in order, original lens->Moded Lens->no cover.

2.http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2913194597/

I will take some picture tomorrow for you to see. Time to sleep.
Those before and after pictures just show what a Mickey Mouse lens cover HTC has provided us with. How about a petition for a new back cover with a glass lens cover?
Top mod, gonna do this one.

I don't know how many kaisers are out in the market but a manufacturer in the far-east (due to cost) can make such back cover with integrated fixed lens in the cost of ~$0.10 (go for worst case 1$) each and I'm sure most of us are willing to pay... lets say $15 each ? so here is a win-win opportunity waiting for an entrepreneur.
I did a similar yet cheaper fix.
Pop out the stock lens.
Cut some plastic (used the package some RAM for my pc came in)
Use the double sided tape and place it there. It's not that noticable but the picture quality improves a great amount.
Great mod, just took my back cover off and the picture is much better. I'm going to try just removing the cover altogether.
Lol, this is so much nicer than my ghetto fix! I had just popped out the plastic lens cover (and succeeded in breaking the little chrome-painted piece in the process, of course) and put a little piece of extra screen protector over the actual lens to protect it from the dust and what not.
Gotta' try this!
my lil camera lens cracked so i removed it and it has been off for over a month. i dont really have issues with debris getting under the battery cover. besides, its not hard to remove the back and clean it with my shirt and put it back on
nice, I will have to try this
You really can notice the difference. I just quickly take the back cover off, take a photo and then put it back on. I really notice the difference now. Thanks heaps!!!!
Thanks for the info... from now on, when I want to take a picture, I'll remove the back cover
I was thinking of doing this mod but using glass designed for optics instead of standard glass. A quick web search found http://www.astraproducts.com/i_ptsheet.asp. Are there any photography experts out there who know if this type of glass work any better than standard glass?
Also, if someone (possibly myself) were to bulk purchase pieces of optical glass "pre-machined" to fit as a replacement to the tilt, would there be much interest in purchasing these? I suppose it would all depend on cost and I have no idea what the cost would be, but maybe worth looking into.
This is just my opinion, but I see no point in going through the trouble of modding a phone that was never really meant to be used primarily as a camera.
I think this makes even less sense when you take in to account the fact that it performs really bad in certain conditions.

My reason for the mod is because the lense on my back cover is cracked right down the middle so the camera hardly works at all. Replacement covers run $50-$60 so I'm looking for a less expensive fix. I don't really want to remove the lense entirely because of allowing dust into the case and also the actual camera lense would be exposed and liable to scratch.

Photos with or without back cover.

I tried to find why my pictures are soo foggy.

dang thats a huge improvement man, it makes me want to try and take that piece out or fit a diffrent type of glass or sumthing there..
People always look at me weird because I pull off the faceplate right before a picture snap!
I thought everyone was aware of this already?
Pretty much everyone is aware, it is like taking the lens cap off before you take a picture.
Other solutions
I've seen some replacement battery cases where the lens cover is just a hole (usually for larger battery replacement covers) and heard of people carefully drilling a hole.
If I can get a replacement back cover I'd go for drilling although it would put the lens itself at risk
just try to pse some screen guard on it
or cleanwith and antistatic clot means fibre
this will solve problem
infact i m doin the same
i have pasted a skin guard on it
workking perfect

Cracked Camera Lens

My camera lens has cracked. I know it can be peeled off, but I want to try to find a replacement. Does anyone know where I could order this part to put it back on myself? Ive done quite a bit of looking on google, and havent found anything solid.
Thanks!
OEM HTC Droid Incredible Camera $22.99
Only problem is it looks like you have to buy a minimum of 3.. cheap enough that you could probably sell the other 2 on Ebay or to someone on here who wants a spare..
If you look at the other cameras they sell, they are the photo units themselves, not the lens. I would say 22 bucks is more likely the price for the camera unit. Very nice find though!
Maybe you can call them and findout if they info on that.. odd that they wouldnt have the lens when they have almost everything else..
Global Direct Parts Tel: 1-210-444-9469 e-mail: [email protected]
A coworker of mine had his lens cover "push in" to the housing and VZW replaced it for him.
Well I don't have insurance, and the lens is cracked, not just pushed in.
He didn't have insurance either...
What do you have to lose by calling VZW and asking them? A wasted 5 minutes?
they even replaced my bricked phone for free with overnight shipping......
I got the red development cover off EBay. It came with a new back plate that has red buttons and a silver camera ring.
I'm not sure if I'm going to try replacing it or not... But would have an extra lens cover if I decide not to.
If it has the lens and all still in it I will gladly paypal ya for it.
Looks like that globaldirect place added a part.. this coujld be it if you are still looking for it.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-Droid-Incredible-Camera-Bezel-p/htc738845.htm
That looks to be the part. I'm ordering 2 and will update with what they are exactly.
can you update with what that part is exactly? i'm thinking about trying to change mine out and would be nice to know exactly what i'm getting before ordering. i e-mailed them but haven't gotten a response yet...
mainly i'm interested in knowing does it come with the glass too, or is it just the bezel?
Anyone find a camera lens cover glass part yet?
Got the lenses in finally. Sorry it took so long, I was out of town on business for a bit. The glass lenses are included with the bezels, but there is no foam bumper like the stock lens. I keep my phone in the Speck case so that really isnt an issue. The lenses are protected by a plastic film which was nice. If anyone has any questions let me know. One concern i do have is glass seems to be off center on one of the bezels i received. I am going to contact them about that.
Any updates? Mine fell off but the camera still functions well. As much as I love the phone, I'm beginning to see just how cheap it is.
it seem like my DINC camera lens are coming offing too. if i pressed little bit harder, it will popped right inside.....
I have a loose lens, as well...
Love the Dinc...hopefully the dinc2 will be a little better quality...
If you have a tiny bit of skill you can make one out of any thin piece of clear plastic. Grab an old boombox or phone or something you don't use anymore with clear plastic and then grab your file and get to work. Free fix.

When you lay the note down on it's back...

Does the camera touch the surface? Is the camera and lens cover recessed behind the battery cover?
I want to use the phone caseless, but there's no way I'm gonna let my camera lens get scratched.
Yes if you are using the stock cover, no if you are using the included flip cover.

The flip cover isn't always included with the Note (mine wasn't), but is an absolute must in my opinion! I hadn't even noticed that there was a recess on the flip cover, but not on the original back.

Must be a regional thing, in my place its packaged by samsung as part of the purchase.
Well that sucks. Why the heck would Samsung do that? It's not gonna make me buy their flip cover or anything.

The back for the flip cover is necessarily thicker than the original back cover to allow for the "flip" to connect to it, which is why the camera is recessed whilst in it.

What confuses me is why Samsung put the camera lens higher than the original back cover in the first place. Could they have not put a lip just around the camera module? *sigh*

there is a physical limitation to what they can and cant do. if you want the camera recessed, you would need to increase the thickness of the phone. the slimness of the phone is one of the reasons why the phone still fits in most pockets despite its large screen.
by launching the flip cover and the device as separate items, they can still claim the device is slim, and still have the option of a recessed camera.
putting a lip around the camera model increases the device's thickness. cant really recess the camera into the case anymore due to the physical size of the camera unit and the amoled display. since the camera unit in our device partially behind the screen, not too much they can do. whereas with the iphone, the camera is in a corner which is not directly behind the screen, giving them a bit more room to play with.
samsung arent miracle workers. even they can only pack in so much.
