Using Kaiser as Modem - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hello there,
Im not sure this is possible so here goes..
I am using the works connection, however they have pretty much everysite blocked, so i want to use my phones connection (kaiser with WnW+).
Now if i unplug my works network cable i can browse the internet through the kaisers internet connection (Local Area Connection 10 on here) but obviously can't access my network drives.
Now what i want to do is have both my works connection and my kaiser in, but i want the browser to use my phones connection NOT the works connection, however i still need my network drive etc.
Sorry if i have confused you or you don't understand.

In order to keep your work's connection active at the same time as your phone's, you would need software for Windows that forces port 80 to go out through Local Area Network 10.

Thank you for your help. Sorry to be a pain but do you know any software which i could get?

nope.
Get a junky computer, install ubuntu or any other flavor of linux, then install squid (a proxy server).. Lastly google the words..
ssh tunneling putty windows
you can get around most firewalls this way.

Thanks for that....
But i don't want to do that.

Then have fun not getting what you want.

haha that was a funny reply.
Try getting software that redirects your traffic on port 80 through a different LAN connection as stated earlier. This is possible. I currently have 2 browsers, one browser going through a VPN connection and the other using a LAN connection.

And notice how the sofware wasn't named.

Found the name for you. It's Juniper networks, Secure Application Manager. When connected depending on which applications you have configured they will go through the tunnel or not. So when the app is in use, IE can only browse sites through that tunnel, so I install Firefox to browse all other sites.

WM6: Ok, VPN: Ok, Remote Desktop: NOT Ok - HELP

Hello all,
I have been successful in loading the WM6 ROM: works great! I have been successful at using the phone for Bluetooth DUN. I have been successfull at setting up a VPN connection to my place of employment: I can look at the RRAS server GUI and see that I have established a viable connection.
What I have NOT been successful at is getting Remote Desktop to work. RD is one of the reasons I upgraded to this ROM. Has any one been able to get their Windows desktop on their Treo? If so, how did you do it?
I can't seem to find any pertinent information on how to make this work so anything you can tell me would be a great help.
Cheers,
idyllic

Joannaex,
thank you for the forum pointers. Alas, they did not help. I did try to load the cab file from one of the threads, but it loaded the same version of Remote Desktop Mobile that I already had. I still get the same errors encountered with the previous version. Maybe this behavior is due to the "unofficial" ROM not being fully functional in some way? I don't know. It would be interesting to hear from someone that actually got this to work.
Cheers

PS: in occurs to me that this might be a routing issue in the 10.x.x.x/192.x.x.x space. I could verify this if there were a command prompt where I could run things like ipconfig, tracert, netstat, etc. Or a log file that could be viewed. Just wishful thoughts I suppose
PPS: Just found two great progs, one called VXIPCONFIG which give you the info you would get in you did an ipconfig /all. The other is called VXUTIL which you can do PING, TRACERT, WHOIS and a lot more. The utilities are available from http://www.cam.com/windowdsce.html.
I have been able to connect to remote desktop. What has been successful for me has been to already initiate my 3G connection then connect using remote desktop. It doesn't seem to be able to start up the connection itself.

andokia,
I am doing the exact same thing: starting my 3G connection, then my VPN connection, and lastly Remote Desktop Mobile. The RDN ALWAYS times out with one of these two errors: "Connection Status - Cannot Connect. Likely reasons are: 1. Specified computer name or IP does not exist, 2. A network error occurred while establishing a connection." So, I'm kind of at a loss here as the troubleshooting tools available are not great. Thank you for the response!

Hi idyllic,
Can you access a remote desktop when a VPN session isn't active? I have used the two separately without problems but haven't tried them together.

no, I cannot access any system. I have tried my home system (firewalls turned off and on). I have tried my work systems (VPN on and off). Nothing seems to work. It's really frustrating to have a tool that you know can help you, but it doesn't work: aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'm assuming you're trying to use a local address because you are connecting with vpn first. Did you put the local address in the exceptions list? If not the vpn connection will disconnect anytime you try to use an address that is not in the exceptions list.
Exceptions list: start\settings\connections\connections\advanced\exceptions
then add the local url
Hope this helps. Used to be the problem I had when trying to use VPN.

chris44gw,
yes, I'm trying to connect to a local addres, but that address isn't a URL. The address I'm entering is an IP address of the machine for which I want to get a desktop. Now maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding is that I can use Remote Desktop Mobile to get, say, a desktop/console of one of my servers.
I've been able to surf the web on the phone, I've been able to use the phone as a Bluetooth modem, I've been able to connect to each of my companies VPN servers. Still now desktop. Whether I enter a fully qualified domain name or an IP address it never works.
Now, I have a little more information. If I just connect to the AT&T 3G network I can do a traceroute to the VPN servers. If I then connect to the VPN (PPTP connection verfied and active) I CANNOT ping anything on the corp. net. It has to be a routing issue I'm thinking. It seems that it needs to be fixed on the phone side, but I can't seem to figure out where to do this.
Anyway, I appreciate the pointer about the URL exception list.

That's what mine looks like. Once I'm connected vpn wise into my 2003 server I can RDP into it and another XP machine on the network through the local IP. Only thing I can think of is if you have activesync connecting to an exchange server. It might disconnect the vpn. I think you've said you're verifying the vpn connections so I might look into the firewall on the computer or make sure RDP is on for the computer (although you've probably done that). Good luck though.

chris44gw,
thank you for the screen-shot. I gave this a try, but no luck. We don't use exchange servers at work and I've verified that no active sync is active during the connect process. Having downloaded a couple of tools to help troubleshoot, I've noticed that I CANNOT ping anything on the internal network: this after verify that the VPN connection active and viable. I have also verified that each system that I am connecting to has RDP turned on. I guess I'll just keep experimenting. I just can't help but think that there is ONE LITTLE THING that is keeping this from working.
Cheers,

PS: What encryption level does the Treo 750 VPN app use? 56bit? 128?
PPS: Upon further testing... when I connect to the RRAS server (and connecting to the RRAS server has NEVER been the problem) on the West Coast (Windows 2000 Server std. SP4) I cannot ping the "inside" network. When I connect to the East coast RRAS server (Windows Server 2003 SP2) I CAN ping "inside" network. In either case I still cannot get a remote desktop.
Have the same problem on Diamond
Hi all,
After upgrading to wm6.1 on O2 Diamond unable connect to Remote Desktop.
When manually connected to Internet it works perfect, but from RD Client there is always an error (dial up or Proxy settings). All other programmes can always correctly initiate internet connection via GPRS/UMTS. Via Active sync RD works always.
MFG
Sorry, never got it to work. Call me a traitor, but I now have an iPhone and everything works the way I expect it... with two major exceptions: 1. no cut-and-paste, 2. can't be used as a tethered modem without jail-breaking the phone (which I'm not willing to do).

Similar problem HTC Touch HD
Hi all, sorry in advance if my problem ends up being because I've missed something basic; I'm trying to setup RDC on my HTC Touch HD with no luck. Computer name is right, password is right, IP is right. Fail message:
"connection status. cannot connect. likely reasons are: 1. specified computer name or ip does not exist. 2. A network error occurred while establishing the connection."
I'm connected to my WiFi network which also has the machine i'm trying to connect to on it. I've also tried when out of network range, connecting via 3G/HSDPA. Steps I've taken:
-Enabled remote desktop in system properties on target machine. Haven't added any remote users as it already allows me (admin on target machine) and I'm using those login details to access.
-Allowed RD in the packet settings of Kaspersky antivirus, using the address as the ip of my mobile, found by going to whatsmyip.com, and name as the name I've set on the device.
-Probably unrelatedly, I've also allowed the HTC to access the wifi through the MAC address access list
I can connect via a standard windows machine on the same router (which just needs the computer name, not the IP). Have found this useful as I had the details around the wrong way, but even now it's not working. Based on the tips in the link above, I'm under the impression that I should set things up thus:
Computer: the ip address of target machine
User name: EITHER my username OR MACHINENAME/User Name, e.g. John Smith OR JOHNSPC\John Smith
Password: pw
Domain: either machinename or blank.
Anyone know if this is right / which of the options for username and domain is right?
Cheers

S730-Notebook with Vista-No internet

I have a notebook, with MS Vista, and with mobile internet (pcmcia card). A tried to connect internet via s730 through mobile device center, but i can't.
I tried with WI-FI: connect to my notebook (ad hoc connection) but i can't use internet.
I tried it with free hotspot and it works.
I don't understand. What can i do?
How are you trying to get online?
You want the s730 do connect to your data network and share that? Or do you want to dial it into the internet (someone got that working on here) or are you connected through your notebook already and want to share that to your s730?

I've never been able to get this to work, I don't even know if you can or not.
I am confused.
Do you want your s730 to get on the Internet by connecting to your laptop? Can you just use a usb cable then you can use internet connection through laptop onto phone.
If I understand you correctly your laptop is what is online and you want it to pass the connection onto your phone through the wifi?
If thats the case that you just need to enable ICS on your laptop. It will be under your menu settings, I havnt messed around with vista's network settings so I cannot tell you quite what it looks like. Possibly a check box or a protocol to install. But once you install Internet Connection Sharing your computer should pass the connection out.

I have this working on my machine with my 730. Often you might need to repair the network connection to your phone from the network connection control panel as it sometimes loses it's IP address.
I also found that I needed to do some work in OneCare which I use as an AntiVirus and Firewall as this was blocking access to the Mobile Device Center.
hope this helps

Torrent and Internet Sharing...

Hi,
I am trying to use download using uTorrent when connected to the internet via Internet Connection sharing on my phone. It connects to client(s) for 1 or 2 seconds and then disconnects, without downloading any data. I have checked that the required ports are open and they are... has anyone managed to do this?
Cheers,
Neil
your provider is probably blocking it. torrents (like any traffic on a network) is traceable, thus block-able.
Torrents with internet sharing?
Man are you downloading rings tones?
you might be able to port scan your own connection and see if that port is close. If you're paying the tethering fee then call them and complain. Tell them you're trying to get a linux distro over torrent and now you can't get your favorite flava.

I thought about this for a bit and even though I do not use uTorrent with a tethered Kaiser, i do have internet issues..... They are probably related. I cannot connect to a web site that uses https on port 2000....
That is something that is only an issue AFTER a flash to Dutty's ROM....
anyone have any help to offer to get MediaNet working proper again?

It shouldn't be their business what you're getting though, isn't that what network neutrality is about? Not restricting flows of information from one PC to another. Of course if you're using extremely high bandwidth you may impact other people's service and that's not fair, but if I pay for bandwidth I should be able to use it on all my ports. It's not up to ISPs to regulate what you do on the internet, just as it isn't up to phone companies to stop you making phonecalls to certain people for whatever reason.

Using PC's internet on PPC

Hi,
I have Windows Vista and use Windows Mobile Device Center to connect to my TyTN II using USB. Can I use my PC's internet via USB on my PPC?
I was also thinking of turning my PC into WiFi access point so that my Kaiser could connect to it using Wifi
Any ideas
Thanks
As long as you are connected through activesync (sorry WMDC) you can use your PC's internet on your phone. As for your second question you should just get a wireless router if you want wi fi for your kaiser.
Thanks for the quick response.

I can't use internet via WMDC on Vista ... what could be the possible reason?

Yes, but for that you need to have your laptop powered on... his point was that if your laptop is on you might as well use the net on it rather than on the obviously much less comfortable phone.
I never tried it, but could be possible by making a ad-hoc wireless network on your laptop, and making your laptop a gateway.
There are settings hidden away that need ticking for sharing the internet connection of the PC, although I thought they defaulted to "on". I'm not sure, I haven't touched a vista machine in months!
Ad-hoc wifi would be the way to go, but good luck getting it working; it's a royal pain in the arse half the time, and for the rest it works like magic. Depends on the devices.
If you're browsing on your phone I hope you've got a copy of Opera Mini; using wifi my phone can nearly outpace my PC at browsing the net.

GUIDE! your diamond or other wm6.1 device as the main internet access via your router

Hello This guide is made up from the knowledge i have build up from advice given on XDA and information on other sites.
I have found this very useful in my home and hope you do to.
First off, this guide explains everything you need to do to use your diamond as the access point to the internet at home for all devices. (PC's, PS3, XBOX360, Wii)
It is highly recommended that you have a unlimited data allowance!!!!! Otherwise you could have a hefty bill at the end of the month.
Right what you will need :
A Diamond with an unlimited data allowance tariff,
A WiFi router (i have used an old router that was installed with Tiscali BB)
WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (please find this your self i will not provide it)
and some basic knowledge of networking on PC's and your devices.
Thats it. Please don't be put off by the networking side of things its really easy to do.
Right first off we need to get your diamond taking to your router.
switch on your router and let it do its thing for 2-4 mins
Connect your diamond to the wifi router by switching on your wifi in settings, communications on touchflow, when prompted, connect to your router and enter your network key.
THIS IS THE SAME PROCESS AS CONNECTING TO A WIFI HOTSPOT.
Its that simple.
Next switch off your wifi in settings, communications.
Install WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (Simple and stable)
once installed open WMWifiRouter and press connect.
This should then setup your phone to be used as a access point and connect to your wireless network all at once.
Once it says connected you can turn off your phones main screen by pressing the off switch at the top and put your phone where there is best signal! HSDPA is needed to get up 7.2mbps (little H in signal area)
Right now you need to setup your laptop or device to talk to the phone via your router!
So here are the settings you need to setup in either TCP/IP (manual connection) or a manual connection on your device (PS3, Wii, XBOX360).
I will use a laptops connection as a example because all you need to do is to copy the settings to another device using a different IP address.
If you use wifi or a hardwired connection, right click the telly with the wifi connection in the bottom right of the screen and click open network connections (XP only dont know for vista), Or if the telly is not displayed in the bottom righthand cornner of the task bar then click start, control panel, network connections.
Click on the connection you wish to use i.e local area connection or wireless network connection (you can setup both connections by repeating these steps on each connection)
this should bring up a general tab of this connection, click properties.
This will bring up another box with the network properties, all you need to do is manually enter your IP settings and DNS settings so double click on "internet protocol [TCP/IP]"
Another box appears.
Click "use the following IP address"
In IP address type "192.168.0.xxx" xxx being the unique 3 digit code of your choice, write this down for your firewall settings on other devices if you run a networked drive etc. Each new device will need its own unique 3 digit code ie PC = 192.168.0.100, XBOX360 = 192.168.0.200, Wii = 192.168.0.123 etc.
In Subnet mask type "255.255.255.0"
In Default gate way type "192.168.0.1
Now click "Use the following DNS server address"
In preferred DNS server type "192.168.0.1"
Thats it, press ok and ok on any other boxes still left open.
Your network device will rest your IP and DNS settings to the ones you have just entered, thus allowing you computer to access the mobiles phones internet connection via your router
On all your devices Manually setup all your connections using these settings and they will all use your mobile phone to connect to the internet.
Using DHCP to configure your network is not advised as its unreliable at finding your phones connection.
Now if you want to start using your phone as a phone again, open up WMWifiRouter again if its not already and click options Quit.
To get internet access on other devices via your phone again all you need to do is to start WMWifiRouter and press connect. Start using the internet!!!
If you wish to use your laptop on another hotspot, you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings back to automatic, otherwise it will not work.
Using this process sometimes causes the phone to disable its own internet connection, so a soft reset after exiting WMWifiRouter is recommended.
Have fun, im sorry if its all a little messy but i have never been very good at writing these guides.
If any modd wants to add or edit this post then please feel free. any persons wanting to add to this guide please do so.
Yes i know you can connect your phone to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, but this method allows multiple devices to use the same phone to access the internet at the same time and via a access point at the highest possible speed, so games consoles can use it!!! Brilliant if you get a good HSDPA signal and live in the country.
Oh one last thing! if you are a youngster and wish to try this, please do so on other equipment, don't use your family's main router and laptop or PC unless its no longer in use!!!
Thank You
i haven't tried it myself but thanks for posting the guide.
Cheers

Because the data going through the phone will really heat up the phone, as a side benefit you'll be able to use it as both a heater, and a stove until your appliances are hooked up.
Just how many torrents does it take to boil 1 cup of water?
I tried out wmwifirouter with my laptop and I must say it's quite slow compared to connecting the phone with USB and using internet sharing, any clue why? Nice guide btw, will be used when needed
:>
your are correct, if you use WMWfiRouter directly with with your computer it does seem slow and you also get a lot of drop outs as well for that reason i stopped using months ago and was using bluetooth edr. But using this method respose times are much much quicker (to be honest i dont know why) and it is just as fast as using with USB, i know i have tested it. Im on orange UK, i get constant 1.6mbps down and 360kbps up with two bars connected the HSDPA network.
Im using it right now to reply to this thread, i got rid of my land lane and broadband connection because this is that stable and fast!
As for heating issues (poster above) once its connected and you turn off the screen, i have never had a issue. i even keep it in its HTC pouch in case it falls of the shelf its on lol.
The only problem i have come across which is more of a annoyance than anything is that when someone phones you it can slow your connection not always though, a soft reset fixes the issue.
Any more questions feel free.
