Using the internet on my computer via X1 - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

Hey guys, I am not sure how this works, but technically it should be doable.
I know with the iphone, you can sync it with you computer to make it a modem for the internet, just wonder how do I do it for my X1?
Obviously, I know how to do it with being charged by my network provider, but I don't wanna do it. So basically, I want to find a way that I can sycn my X1 with my laptop, so I get to use the Internet on my laptop via my X1 without paying anything extra. (my mobile contract comes with a unlimited web data plan)
Hope I am making some sense.
Thanks a lot

First things first, You've posted in the wrong forum, this should have been in the general section.
Secondly if you' d done a search you would have found the answer.
But anyway, it's very simple: Plug the phone in via USB open up your programs on the phone, scroll down to the one called 'Internet sharing' press and follow the instructions.
You PC (If it's windows) should ask you if you want to use the new connection, and off you go

Thanks, but I know how to do this with paying extra to my network provider, but I know there is a way of doing it without paying extra.

Huh? You have stated that you have an unlimited data package with your cellphone provider.
Hence if you use this method they will not charge you as it's using the phone as a modem over it's own 3G network.

U sure? coz when I took out the phone, I asked the very same question, and I was told if I use the data on my phone, then it is unlimited access, but if I link it with a computer, they will be able to tell as it will show the data is through a computer not the handset, and they will charge me certain amount per MB. I take it you are in the UK with O2? Coz I am the same.

Yeah, I am a little bit confused too... but probably I need some clarifications: you want that your pc shares Internet with your X1 or the opposite?
I mean, which device has the internet connection you want to share, your laptop or your X1?
EDIT: uhm, after your 6:57 post I am more confused than before. I actually do not think they can tell which device is using the data downloaded by your X1... however, this is my opinion.

in my program menu i have an icon called "condivisione internet", i think that in english will appear as "internet sharing". from this menu you can start the internet connection and share it by the usb cable or bluetooth.
i also install a program called WMWifiRouter, that transform my x1 in a wi-fi router and use the wi-fi connection to share the internet.
one thing....iphone doesn't have an official modem driver, you have to jailbreak it and install a third part application

WMWiFirouter rulez !!
I even removed my ADSL contracts and am using the Xperia's HSDPA connection at home and office - amazing speed and flawless connection
Impressive
NO WAY you can do this with an iPhone or T-MO G1
I love this phone a bit more everyday

I want to cut the internet on my computer so I can use the package I get from my X1 on both my laptop and X1 itself. Trying to save some money I am. I see what you guys are saying, but as I said, I was told by O2 if use my X1 as a modem for my laptop, then I will be charged on a MB basis, which is extremely expensive. They specifically told me they can tell when and what sites I have been on using whether my phone or on a computer. Which I think it makes sense in a way, coz otherwise, everyone would be cutting off their Internet at home and start using their mobiles as modems (if they have as nice phone as ours). Unless all these from O2 is a bluff.
So did my friend do some dodgy thing to make his iphone Internet works on his computer then?
Sorry guy if I am confusing the matter as I am confused myself, any further help greatly appreciated. And do forgiver my English!
PS - Would this work with my Mac? I don't have a PC, I could buy the MissSync, but not sure how good it will work and quite expensive.

Maybe your "unlimited data plan" on your phone is about wap traffic? Than O2 is right and you are gonna pay a lot for the regular shared net connection. Check this with them.
Just my opinion!

Well I think the simplest way to sort this is do a test.
Just use the shared internet connection facility for a couple of days then stop.
If your next bill comes with a charge attached then they are right, if not they are talking BS and you can carry on.
p.s. I'd like to know if this is true as well as i'm with O2

Better for a couple of minutes! Using a internet connection w/out a data plan will dry his pocket out as a day in Sahara. Don't try this at home!

WMWifirouter is definitely worth a try.
With T-mobile I've got unlimited data on the phone, but it does not permit tethering (using the connection for a laptop or other computer), but with WMWifirouter, it routes it through a program on the phone, so it can be shared.
Brilliant bit of software, worth paying for, even if just for emergencies (e.g. at a friend's house, they have no internet but have laptop, and you want to show them a stupid youtube video... it's serious stuff).

unlimited data plan is not real unlimited, its just enough to last a month with on your phone.
btw phone companies are bluffing because they also say they can see if you are calling via skype instead of the normal cellular radio....

If you use tmobile in the UK, I would imagine your unlimited data would be similar to mine since they are both in the UK.
I guess I will give the WMWifirouter a good and see what will happen if I get on the Internet for a few mintues and maybe increase my time bit by bit...
Thanks for all the replies and sure will keep you guys updated with the results, if my X1 doesn't sell on ebay. Nothing wrong with that, just being a Mac computer person and having a WiMo is a little... weird... but don't jump on me, I love the X1 and it's great!!!!

Hi there,
Connect your laptop to the X1 with a USB cable. Start the computer.
Tap
Start > Programs > Tools > Internet Sharing.
Select USB & Contract Internet then Tap connect at the bottom of the screen.
Open your browser and it should be working. You need a very good mobile signal to get any speed out of it.
Hope this helps.

Is there any way to use my PC internet connection on my X1i with Bluetooth?
i'm sure there is
all the best

my home broadband was down for a week a few days ago. used my x1 using the internet connection sharing app. for it to work i had to remove the ethernet cable from the pc. but once i did it was fine.
and voda didnt charge me anything as i have the unlimited internet included.
problem was i dont like in a 3g area so it was back to 8kb/s speeds. pain, but a lot better than nothing!
---ronin. in the internet sharing application there is an option to connect via bluetooth. try that.

thanks James but i've already tried that but i couldn't manage it
actually when i select Bluetooth pan then i should select a network but there is no network connection to select
can any body help me find a solution?
all the best

Tethering? Do I really need to pay extra for it?

The guy at ATT store said last week when I bought my Tilt that in order to use it with my laptop I had to pay the extra ($59/month plan instead of the $39 I was hoping for) for my unlimited data plan.
My question is, if though I have the username and password (cause I called them for it) and am using the HTC ROM (instead of the ATT one), do I still need to be paying extra for the "TETHERING" service?
Thanks guys
Nope. Just need to connect your phone using the Internet Sharing program, and you should be good to go.

That is not necessarily true. If your data usage pattern (IE, large amounts of data) indicates you are tethering, you will get popped for excess data usage. If your tethering is light, then you should be alright.
Don't assume you can hook up your laptop and go to town web surfing.
While that is true, I think they're pretty lenient with it. I had around a GB of data one month and they didn't care. But yeah, keeping it under the radar is a good rule.
wanted to ask about this
With the 3125 I have I was able to use ICS with the 20 dollar media plan or whatever. I work for different companies and I would use that to get to the net privately. Anyway, I went to another company and I couldn't get ICS to work on that network for some reason.
I'm a developer so I compiled up an internet proxy server to run on the phone. So basically when activesync is not active I could run the server and set my browser to that proxy server. Anyone know if that could avoid tethering? I don't have the proxy running on my Tilt yet. I was going to put a nicer UI on it. I'm wondering if anyone around here would have a use for it.
att as of right now has not been able to catch people tethering other than by exorbant data usage (obviously d/ling 20 GB a month on your kaiser without a tethering plan is going to get you caught), but if it wouldnt take you too long im sure there are a lot of people here who would have a use for that.

I dont follow... ICs is for when you are out and about and want to use your laptop over your phone's data connection... so unless your new company arent paying for any data, then it will work regardless.
And apart from excessive data usage, the only way a network could potentially check up on tethering is if you use it for weird and wonderful things and thus use different ports.
no i'm talking about the local machines network. for some reason ics would not work there. so i run a proxy server on the phone. That worked for internet access without using the modem OR ics.
I rarely tether so data usage will probably not be an issue. The thing is on the rare occasion when I do I don't want to have to pay an extra $20/month. That is BS...
I just took a very rare road trip over the weekend and tethered using ICS so we'll see what happened when the bill comes next month.

You won't find it under Comm Manager or under Settings... Connections. AT&T has hidden the program (deleted the shortcut), but it's still there, and it works just fine:
Create a shortcut in \windows\start menu\programs (or wherever you want to put it) for the following program:
\windows\IntShrUI.exe
Run it, and you're done.
AT&T settings
H0mersimp0n what are the settings youare using that at&t gave you, I have another post on this forum looking for those. Any help would be great!
Thanks
From a technology standpoint, you will be able to tether with pretty much any AT&T data plan. However, the issue is that doing so is technically a violation of the terms of service. (AT&T goes so far as to single out tethering as being prohibited, unless you are paying for a tethering plan.) In practice, I think most people have found that AT&T tends not to enforce this provision unless your data usage is ridiculously high - at a level that, based on their estimation, is just not consistent with handset use. This is pretty subjective and I think that if anyone got flagged for high usage, it would still be AT&T's burden to "prove" the tethering. (Having said that, while that person might be able to fight against being charged per KB, AT&T might still be able to cancel the contract, anyway)
If you take AT&T's terms of service literally, the vast majority of the data usage on a PDA would be prohibited. From their perspective, only web browsing, checking email and streaming media content that you bought from them would be permitted. Let's see how long AT&T keeps its smartphone/PDA customers if they start enforcing these terms literally.

For anyone who needs it, the shortcut should be set to: 41#:MSINTERNET_SHARING?:intshruiapp
And to make it worse, AT&T is jacking with the prices for all internet service through the phone.
Personally I think that internet through Cell networks should be dirt cheap. Why? No "last mile" copper to mess with. The "last mile" is the copper to your house is a pain in the you know what for most provider companies to deal with. It is the highest expense for them. With cell networks, there is no "last mile" and much lower costs for them to keep the network running. Put that with the fact that cellular networks are so much slower than broadband so their connectivity costs are much lower than DSL and Cable. Bottom line is AT&T and others are making a KILLING on network access. The cellular bandwidth is very broad and can handle the data quite easily if more folks were using it real time for access. In the end it probably wouldn't even jump more than 10%, of which they are ready to handle right now.
Let them know you don't appreciate their pricing. It won't get better if we accept things as is.
Personally, I would have liked for this company to have taken off, if it weren't for the feds. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9770197-7.html Damn the man!

I just got my Tilt and am new to AT&T. I am trying to setup tethering. With my old cellular ISP (Cellular South) I was able to setup my WM5 pda phone as a modem pretty easily.
I am not sure what my username and password is or what do enter to "dial".
With CS ISP the phone and the wireless modem setup just dialed #777.
Can some please point me in a direction?
Thanks!
If you do a hard reset on the tilt and soft reset before the customer configuration takes place, internet sharing icon will appear in the "Programs"
Internet Sharing
Does anyone have any experience with the "Wireless Modem" feature on the new AT&T Tilt?
It appears to offer the same function as Internet Sharing utility but I can't seem to make it work... Anybody know what the heck this Wireless Modem feature is and how to use it with our PDA Unlimited Plan?
I messed with it on my notebook when I was on the road and had no success at all with it...
Sincerely,
Charlie

tilt 8925 as modem
i just got the tilt yesterday 12/24/2007 it is replacing the bb/curve 8310! so the rep told me that i could discontinue my att/air-card and that i could tether the tilt as the modem! the calling plan $59 and then $79 for the completely unlimited text/and modem usage! "worked great till about 4am" now the tilt is froze up on the widows mobile screen! yes i did the bat/pull-hard reset! then contacted tech/support! they said to take it back tomorrow 12/26 and exchange it! my question is if i pay for unlimited text and the $49 internet,,, why are they charging me an additional $30 to tether? and also is this a common issue with the tilt?

Because you get unlimited internet on your phone. You can use the limited browser, etc of the phone. Your obviously not going to take much bandwidth up using a small little phone.
You tether that to your PC, your internet usage goes up. Although you pay for UNLIMITED TRANSFER, they know you won't use /THAT/ much transfer on a tiny phone. You actually plan to take advantage of UNLIMITED by tethering, they wanna get even more money.
You can tether without AT&T's permission. Simply go into the WINDOWS folder and find the file called "Internet Sharing", create a shortcut by long tapping it, and copy the file to somewhere easily accessible. Double click this program, click USB then connect the USB to your PC. Now a new network interface should appear in network connections on your computer. You can use internet via ATT without additional charges.
However, if you use more than an unpublished amount of bandwidth, you'll end up getting a $4,500 bill in the mail one day. They'll start charging you per kilobyte. Their only argument will be "you cant use that much bandwidth on the phone, so you must be tethering"
Yeah, you pay for UNLIMITED INTERNET, but according to them it is LIMITED to your device. Nice, huh? Oh well, thats big megacorp for you.

Internet Sharing via wifi

Hi there
My Laptop does not have wireless and I am trying to use my Touch Diamond to connect to the wireless at uni so that I can browse the internet on my laptop at uni. I am having two problems figuring this out.
I can connect to the wireless on my diamond at uni to the work connection like the instructions tell me to. But I cannot seem to use this connection to browse the internet. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
The next issue I have is that if I start the internet sharing tool I only have two options for the connection to share. The first is Telstra internet and the second is Telstra MMS I do not want to use these connections as i am on prepaid and all my credit would be gone in less than a minute.
I hope someone can give me some ideas as to what I am missing in this setup.
Thanks
Telstra Internet
I have now set the internet connection back to telstra but it doesn't want to load the telstra home page anymore. That is why I gave up last time. I wish I could use wifi when I have it and browse the free sites when I don't Telstra is very annoying.
Information
Hello, soon im gonna write a small guide as to how to use your phone incondunction with a router to allow all devices connected to the router to connect via the mobile phones internet connection. I understand that this is not what your askings as from my experence you will not be able to what your are asking. But if you have a unlimited data allowence then this would be a good option.
you need a router
you need wireless on your laptop (dongle/built in)
and some minor knowledge on setting up networks manually
keep your eyes out for the thread.

try to use wmwifirouter - it can use phones wireless and BT/USB connection to pc it will be a router for pc
Unsure
Thanks for your ideas although I might not have made myself clear.
The laptop does not have wireless. And I do not want to use the data connection on my phone as that will cost a fortune.
I wanted to get my phone to connect to the uniwireless and then allow my laptop to connect to the uni wireless for free internet via the phone.
I think I might just give up and buy a usb adaptor for the laptop.
Cheers
wmwifirouter does this !
Thanks
Oh ok, well I would have a look but i don't want to pay for it so im not going to try, especially as every time i have touched my network setup my free browsing stops working.
Thanks

GUIDE! your diamond or other wm6.1 device as the main internet access via your router

Hello This guide is made up from the knowledge i have build up from advice given on XDA and information on other sites.
I have found this very useful in my home and hope you do to.
First off, this guide explains everything you need to do to use your diamond as the access point to the internet at home for all devices. (PC's, PS3, XBOX360, Wii)
It is highly recommended that you have a unlimited data allowance!!!!! Otherwise you could have a hefty bill at the end of the month.
Right what you will need :
A Diamond with an unlimited data allowance tariff,
A WiFi router (i have used an old router that was installed with Tiscali BB)
WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (please find this your self i will not provide it)
and some basic knowledge of networking on PC's and your devices.
Thats it. Please don't be put off by the networking side of things its really easy to do.
Right first off we need to get your diamond taking to your router.
switch on your router and let it do its thing for 2-4 mins
Connect your diamond to the wifi router by switching on your wifi in settings, communications on touchflow, when prompted, connect to your router and enter your network key.
THIS IS THE SAME PROCESS AS CONNECTING TO A WIFI HOTSPOT.
Its that simple.
Next switch off your wifi in settings, communications.
Install WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (Simple and stable)
once installed open WMWifiRouter and press connect.
This should then setup your phone to be used as a access point and connect to your wireless network all at once.
Once it says connected you can turn off your phones main screen by pressing the off switch at the top and put your phone where there is best signal! HSDPA is needed to get up 7.2mbps (little H in signal area)
Right now you need to setup your laptop or device to talk to the phone via your router!
So here are the settings you need to setup in either TCP/IP (manual connection) or a manual connection on your device (PS3, Wii, XBOX360).
I will use a laptops connection as a example because all you need to do is to copy the settings to another device using a different IP address.
If you use wifi or a hardwired connection, right click the telly with the wifi connection in the bottom right of the screen and click open network connections (XP only dont know for vista), Or if the telly is not displayed in the bottom righthand cornner of the task bar then click start, control panel, network connections.
Click on the connection you wish to use i.e local area connection or wireless network connection (you can setup both connections by repeating these steps on each connection)
this should bring up a general tab of this connection, click properties.
This will bring up another box with the network properties, all you need to do is manually enter your IP settings and DNS settings so double click on "internet protocol [TCP/IP]"
Another box appears.
Click "use the following IP address"
In IP address type "192.168.0.xxx" xxx being the unique 3 digit code of your choice, write this down for your firewall settings on other devices if you run a networked drive etc. Each new device will need its own unique 3 digit code ie PC = 192.168.0.100, XBOX360 = 192.168.0.200, Wii = 192.168.0.123 etc.
In Subnet mask type "255.255.255.0"
In Default gate way type "192.168.0.1
Now click "Use the following DNS server address"
In preferred DNS server type "192.168.0.1"
Thats it, press ok and ok on any other boxes still left open.
Your network device will rest your IP and DNS settings to the ones you have just entered, thus allowing you computer to access the mobiles phones internet connection via your router
On all your devices Manually setup all your connections using these settings and they will all use your mobile phone to connect to the internet.
Using DHCP to configure your network is not advised as its unreliable at finding your phones connection.
Now if you want to start using your phone as a phone again, open up WMWifiRouter again if its not already and click options Quit.
To get internet access on other devices via your phone again all you need to do is to start WMWifiRouter and press connect. Start using the internet!!!
If you wish to use your laptop on another hotspot, you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings back to automatic, otherwise it will not work.
Using this process sometimes causes the phone to disable its own internet connection, so a soft reset after exiting WMWifiRouter is recommended.
Have fun, im sorry if its all a little messy but i have never been very good at writing these guides.
If any modd wants to add or edit this post then please feel free. any persons wanting to add to this guide please do so.
Yes i know you can connect your phone to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, but this method allows multiple devices to use the same phone to access the internet at the same time and via a access point at the highest possible speed, so games consoles can use it!!! Brilliant if you get a good HSDPA signal and live in the country.
Oh one last thing! if you are a youngster and wish to try this, please do so on other equipment, don't use your family's main router and laptop or PC unless its no longer in use!!!
Thank You
i haven't tried it myself but thanks for posting the guide.
Cheers
Thanks for reading
Its does work, In my home i no longer have a land line or cable broadband i just have one bill a month which is my phone bill of £41 including insurance on my device and i get every thing, i have saved my self a fortune per year doing this, that was my reason anyway hehe L8rs

Because the data going through the phone will really heat up the phone, as a side benefit you'll be able to use it as both a heater, and a stove until your appliances are hooked up.
Just how many torrents does it take to boil 1 cup of water?
I tried out wmwifirouter with my laptop and I must say it's quite slow compared to connecting the phone with USB and using internet sharing, any clue why? Nice guide btw, will be used when needed
:>
your are correct, if you use WMWfiRouter directly with with your computer it does seem slow and you also get a lot of drop outs as well for that reason i stopped using months ago and was using bluetooth edr. But using this method respose times are much much quicker (to be honest i dont know why) and it is just as fast as using with USB, i know i have tested it. Im on orange UK, i get constant 1.6mbps down and 360kbps up with two bars connected the HSDPA network.
Im using it right now to reply to this thread, i got rid of my land lane and broadband connection because this is that stable and fast!
As for heating issues (poster above) once its connected and you turn off the screen, i have never had a issue. i even keep it in its HTC pouch in case it falls of the shelf its on lol.
The only problem i have come across which is more of a annoyance than anything is that when someone phones you it can slow your connection not always though, a soft reset fixes the issue.
Any more questions feel free.

Internet sharing dilemmas...

This is a 2-part dilemma...
1.) is there a way to use my Wi-fi and data plan as a gateway for internet access with the computers in my home? I want to be able to turn on the Wi-fi, and the phone will become an access point and its internet connection comes from my data plan... I guess this can be done with a T-mobile G1.
2.) the way I do it now is that I hook it up via USB to a computer, and that works pretty well. Problem is, if I disconnect it via software function on the phone or just yank the USB plug out, I have to re-boot my phone before the internet sharing will work again. This gets annoying. Anyone else experience this and/or know if there's a fix?
Or am I just dumb and want everything on a silver platter?
are these computers connect in a network. I am sure it can easily be done by internet connection sharing just have all the computers connect to your pc for a connection.
I thought about doing that--basically an internet share to an internet share. That WOULD work, but I was hoping for something a bit simpler. i am not a hardcore computer user like I was back in the day where I had to have at least 3 computers running 24/7 in order to cope with life. LOL. I was hoping for a setup where I can just walk in the door from a crappy day at work, plug my phone into the charger where it gets its best signal, and just leave it there and the rest will take care of itself. I am close to being able to do that with my Xlink bluetooth cellular gateway. Once I am home, there's no reason why I have to carry my phone around the house, as my hard-wired phones in the house ring through my cellular and I can make calls from them
The other option is to quit being a cheap turd and get a $30/mo internet connection for my computers, which is faster than the EDGE service I get here at home. But I live alone and don't download big stuff anymore or play multiplayer games, etc
I think the concept in question is one that has been batted around here for some time: Can the Kaiser be used as an access point with an internet connection?
As far as anyone's been able to tell, no. The phone's wifi chip(or part of a chip that does wifi) would need to support AP mode (access point mode) where in it receives and routes multiple wifi connections' data between each other and the GPRS hardware. As far as anyone's been able to tell, the wifi capabilities in the phone are limited to single-connection only, so allowing multiple devices to connect (or even 1, unless the desired device can get internet via adhoc or bluetooth) is not possible.
You can use the WiFi connection sharing. What it does is take your EDGE or 3G connection and set your phone up as an "access point". I put that in parenthesis because it creates an "ad-hoc" network that only certain devices can detect and connect to. Ad-Hoc is a device to device network, where the normal is infrastructure mode. Also being the device it is, I'm not sure if it's going to be an intelligent network device, IE.. iTunes music sharing between local connected clients. But you can most certainly share your connection with your laptops or desktops if they have WiFi. I'll see if I can find the cab for you and post it here.
EDIT: Here you go... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4175565&postcount=90
Cool. I will look into that! I pretty much only have one computer running at a time these days, and the EDGE connection isn't all that fast to be sharing it among multiple computers anyway.
why...
Hi,
Not sure if i understand... why would someone use the "crappy" internet connection of a phone to get internet access to your home network...
It's 2009. Why not get a decent cable or DSL account

$ 30.00 for your phone data connection + $ 45.00 for your home cable/DSL connection = $75.00 per month, as opposed to just $30.00 for both.
To some people $ 45 dollars a month is a lot of money to save no matter how slow the connection is.
I am no expert but I found this software here a while ago and really liked it. There is an older version that is legally free but the new one is pay, try the trial.

Or you're like me and cant get anything but satellite internet where I live, which is way more expensive. Yet I get 3G just fine =)
WMWifiRouter
I like WMWifiRouter pretty well. It drains my battery like crazy, but when I have my phone plugged in, it's okay. Without being plugged in, my battery loses about 20% over ten minutes. Also, the free version doesn't really come with any admin features. The router is public and there's no way to see who's connected. Other than that, it's great!
