Screen Off - G1 Apps and Games

Hey guys,
I tried searching an answer for this question cudn't so here i am....im a starting developer and am new to android...for a basic appi want to be able to turn the screen off...is that possible ?
Thanks in advance

What do you mean, like put the phone into sleep mode? (lock screen upon pressing a button, like pushing the end key) or turn the screen off compeltely?
You can probably simulate the latter of those two by just making a black screen and have whatever processes you need to run, run in the background. Although it would help to know what this is for in the first place

oh im tryin to make like a timout app...just for begginer practice...so yea i want it to mimick wht it does when u press the end key... thnks for u quick response though..

Well, technically there's no way (unless possibly the phone was rooted, but still unlikely) to make anything behave like the end key, and if you did, you would probably get the phone to stick on the end key and not be able to turn the phone back on.
For beginner practice, I'd reccomend making a flashlight app, since that requires a few skills that you'll need in the future. Best not to jump into the big-guns stuff so quickly

How Do I Shut Down My Tilt???

i was writing up some .ink for my tilt and i pretty much remapped everything all the buttons. and now i have remapped the power button to activate a program pxshut to shut down my device. but every time i would to use that to shut down it would just go into hibernate, it wouldnt turn off the device.
now i am worried that my tilt has been on for weeks, but i have been soft resetting it consistently though
can anyone help my find the **** down ink or a program that can actually shut down my device?
Take out the battery
Lol! Great answer. Removing the battery will most certainly turn off yer device. On the other hand, here is a link for you on how to reassign the buttons Write here if you need more help, Chicken.

Fox.
hey thanks for the help guys, i was actually trying to avoid the battery removal.
i already know how to reassign buttons, i am trying to find out how do you restore a shut down button to shut down your device.
you tried press&hold of the power button, until the shutdown dialog is displayed?
i think pdas cannot be shutdown completely.
there always be a little energy from backup battery (am i right?)
so when you turn your pda off, you just hybernate it.
long press power (suspend) button
No, firstbuddha is right, to actually turn off your Tilt all you need to do is hold down the standby button, and ok the dialogue that pops up. The device is properly shut down then, not just suspended. It'll reboot the next time you press the button.
actually that wont work, because like i said in my first post i reporgrammed the long and shortt power button to do something else. and now there is no way to shut down the tilt.
so i was wondering can anyone direct me to the ""shutdown.ink" or the thing that i can program my button to shut down the tilt, or at least start up the shut down dialoge
use 3rd party software.
hold on, i'll find you something

PowerOff Shortcut
Hi dude
You don't need any app, try to make this shortcut (.lnk):
31#"\Windows\PowerOffWarning.exe" /ExitWindowsEX (EWX_SHUTDOWN, NULL)
than rename it how you want and put it wherever!

I'd suggest you make a full backup and hard reset the device in order to make sure its not a hardware problem. If it works fine after a hard reset, you'll know its something you installed relatively recently.
I did a hard reset.nothing changed.then i flashed a different ROM.But still i am facing the problem.
Try the following:
Get a can of canned Air and blow it on the button as it might move any debris that are there. Just make sure that the phone is off and the battery is out. KEEP THE AIR STREAM AWAY FROM THE SCREEN! If any of the propellant escapes while you spray, it can freeze the LCD. Just slide it open and stick some paper on top of the screen. Wait a few moments before you switch the device back on
If this doesn't work, flash the Kaiser with its original ROM and SPL just in case there is an odd interaction somewhere. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418375
If nothing of the above work, you have two options:
a. If the device is in warranty, return it and get it fixed or replaced. Make sure is has its original ROM/SPL loaded before you do.
b. If the device is out of warranty/you don't care about the warranty, you can try to open it up and see if something is blocking the switch. There are instructions floating around here somewhere.
EDIT: Added warning regarding the propelant and the LCD
Any update here? My tilt is doing the exact same thing
alt236 pretty much said all there was to it. Hard reset, restore stock ROM, try blowing the switch, if all fails send for repair.
Did all of the above and the cost of repair is not worth it. Time to toss my kaiser I guess

Stuck on TouchFlo

Hi everyone,
My HTC Touch Diamond phone appears to be stuck on the TouchFlo screen. I can use the hard-buttons to move around the screen and do the essentials, but I somehow cannot use the touch-screen at all.
Strange thing however is that while I am in certain screens (ie: Call History), whenever I touch the screen, I can see the OK button in the top-right corner show up and go away whenever I remove my finger from the screen.
I've attempted several soft resets and removed the battery for a few minutes, yet still at no avail. Anyone have a clue what could be wrong? I am desperate and don't want to do a hard-reset and lose all my data and settings.
Looking forward to your suggestions!
nobody any ideas?
My personal thought on it is that you probably just need to recalibrate your screen... but I can not figure out a way to get to that option without using the screen. If there was a start button it would be easy, but since we have a sleek phone it doesn't have one.

It may or may not help but a shortcut to align screen is to hold Enter/Action and press Volume Up.
I only know this because my friend is looking for a way to disable this combo for gaming purposes.
The symptoms sounds like you have installed SensorLock.
When i have it activated i can press the hardbuttons and the upper right corner of the screen.
Try flip your phone and see if it unlocks?
All great suggestions guys! Especially the Enter + VolUp was the one I wouldve wanted to try! In the end, I decided to go to HTC Support and they checked the device. Turned out it was a hardware problem: the connector was loose! After pressing a bit around the lower edge of the screen, the connector worked properly again!
Thanks again for the help guys!

Galaxy S Captivate Lock Button Problem...Solved!

Okay Guy whats up! So it took me a while find a loophole to this problem. I am pretty sure some of you guys have problems with the Captivate's Lock/hold button (the button which you turn your phone off/on).
I realize there was two different type of same problem:
1. The lock button works but it seems like its always being pushed down. Like for example, when you pressed it once, the screen lights up & the pop-up menu(The menu with Airplane mode, data connection, slient, off/on) pops up even when you pressed it lightly! And you cant get it to turn off until wait for the screen lockout time.
2. The lock button does not work at all. You cant get it on or off, its totally unresponsive.
Now there are three solutions:
1. The most common one being if you have warranty , just drop by the store tell them the problem and they should either fix it or give you a new one.
2. Fix it yourself. You can dissemble the captivate yourself! If you go to youtube and search how to dissemble, there are couple of video that shows a step by step process of dissembling the captivate. Now the only problem is that there isnt a specific video locating the lock button and you will have to find that yourself. So after you dissemble your captivate, locate the lock and use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner I read that is the most reliable and decent one out of all sprays and all you need to do is spray around hold button area, and push the lock button 20-30 times and repeat the process a couple of times. After that you should let it dry for a couple of min and then put your phone back together and it should work fine!.
3. I THINK THIS IS THE BEST/SAFEST METHOD if you dont have warranty or dont want to risk dissembling your phone or pay money for the repair. This is just going to take a while to get used to! First you can go the market and download "No Lock". This app allows you to unlock your phone using the volume button. convenient eh? This is what I am using right now and the only problem I am experience is that sometimes (like 1 out of 10 times) it doesnt unlock when I press the volume button(just wait a couple min and try again) , and you wont be able to set up a screen lock or pw (every so often if you did have a screen lock or id pw already on captivate, it would just randomly pop up and you would have to put in your pw). Now you have a way to turn on your phone without using the lock button. NOW for turning your phone to sleep, You can get an app call "Screen Off and Lock", This app basically allows you to press the app, and then the phone goes to sleep. There is an another app that requires root called "virtual button bar" which cost 2 dollars i think. But this app is basically a small button bar that lets you put the phone to sleep at anytime. For the "screen off and lock" you have to go to that app and tap it, while the "virtual button bar" allows you to put the phone to sleep while playing a game to looking through photos, ect.
There you have it. Hopefully i didnt sound too confusing and I solve your problem. I was having this problem and it was very irritating.
*Side note: If you are not too comfortable about how you cant set up a pw for your captivate there is a couple apps like "Smart App Protector ( App lock)" which basically locks up an app. You can look that up in the market for more information.
I cant find No Lock app from market. Can you post a link?

I just tried the second solution and it did help power button functionality. It was fun taking the Captivate apart too! When I got to the spray part, I was hesitant to spray for one second. I think I did some micro-second sprays. In order to get the power button working more frequently, I did have to do one second sprays. I utilized the plastic straw that comes with the can in order to spray blast the the power button hardware. Try going from as many angles as you can. I'm sure pressing the power button right after spraying helps work the cleaner into the power button hardware. The majority of the help comes from the cleaner itself. Functionality is greatly improved. The button works about 75%-90% of the time instead of 5%.
I am glad I will not be paying $70 to Samsung or $65 with a local mobile repair shop to repair this anytime soon. My phone may be out of warranty, but why did the power button hardware degrade in the first place? Better QA Samsung! I will not be going with a new Galaxy II. And I will not be upgrading with ATT. Screw contracts and monopolistic companies!

Solution # 2 worked like a charm, thanks!!
Now that one of my Captivate's problems have been solved I need to find a solution to the other one. The soft keys, specially the search button, randomly acts on it's own. I wonder if I can use the same method in the area without harming the phone?
There IS a 4th solution:
You can send it out to mobiletechvideos.com and they can replace the power button for $30 with free shipping back to you.
I just did this and they are very fast at repairing your phone and getting it back out to you asap. I highly recommend their services.
K... this sucks! I started having this problem on my phone TWO DAYS right after the warranty expired! Doesn't this suck?
Thinking of trying method #2 and wonder if I should get some CRC QD Electronic Cleaner at Radio Shack, Best Buy that kind of stores...
Where did you get yours? Any alternative solution than CRC QD Electronic Cleaner?

Thank your for your suggestion. I would try the local phone store repairer before deciding to ship the phone to US while I am in Canada.
Or if you on most of the miui or cyanmod based rooms you have option to button unlock. Or remap keys and still have pin unlock

Or instead of number three remap the power button to the volume down button. This way it works exactly like the power button without fail. You can either use this app- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464 or using root explorer to modify the key layout manually which is the only way on some roms. You must be rooted which i figure most of us are to perform either method.

Thanks for that thread, I'm going to look into modifying my volume key to be a power button. However, I'm assuming that will only work in the OS and not before it is loaded (i.e. not in the bootloader, recovery, off-state, etc)?
I'm on ICSSGS.
Hey thanks for this thread. I have been having issues with the phone thinking the power button is always pressed. All I can say is that this issue always comes up at the worst possible times. I did manage to fix the issue once by wiping user data and cache in recovery mode, but now the issue has come up again and it doesn't fix it which makes me think it's become a hardware issue and not a software one. I'm using Cyanogenmod version 7.2 and am on GB 2.3.5.
thanks for the method, you are the man!

So I have used this, and IMO it is the absolute best method to use without a power button.
I had 2 separate Captivates with this issue. The clean method worked on 1 captivate on the other doesn't I sent it to mobiletechvideos.com and they fixed for 30$
Editing key layout manually did not work for me. I may have gone about it incorrectly, though. I just edited the Aries-keypad.kl and Cypress-touchkey.kl files. I may have been using the wrong command for Power- I was able to change the Search key to the Wake command though, so the Search key will bring up the Lockscreen. Not much help I'm afraid. I would also assume, like m7ia, that these files only control the OS side. I have not searched any deeper, however.
Thanks for your solution i repair phones for living and cleaning button idea never came to me lol (always changing whole button), anyways PRF or any contact cleaner directly into button couple of times do the magic. Great solution Thanks boss

[Q] phone will not power off or on properly. Shut down menu pops up constantly

I have searched this exact title and came up with 10 pages and I never saw anyone else with this problem. Surely I cannot be the only one.
After the Gingerbread upgrade I was getting the tethering message/force close, during that time my phone started to randomly shut off ( settle down Beavis, this isn't the same question thats been asked a thousand times ) and reboot. I lived with the tethering message problem for as long as I could but my phone became more ignorant day by day. I finally found a fix for the tethering issue and haven't had a return problem with that but now my phone either stays in standby mode ( dark screen ) and refuses to respond to the hard button to wake it up OR once on it refuses to go into standby mode and stays on until I pop the battery or I go into settings and time the screen out in 15 seconds ( often times this doesn't shut it down either ). Sometimes I can get it to come on by multiple pressing the power button ( this can't be healthy ) and the lock screen will flash momentarily just long enough for me to unlock the screen. Other times it will go to the lock screen while I'm in the middle of something.
Every day at some point while it's on and I'm using it, the power button option screen pops up ( silent mode, flight mode, power off ). When I'm done with a call I try to go into standby and it just sets there...ON.
The thought has crossed my mind that the button doesn't work or has a short but I really think it's something else ( I hope ). Can somebody help me? I am not very techie although I have updated the phone three times myself. It is unrooted and 2.3.5
Thank you in advance
I would go with the power button. It's a known issue on captivate.

I stopped by the AT&T store the other day to check on insurance (ends up I didn't have it) and told them about my button not working properly and how the Captivate was notorious for this problem and they all said "We've never heard that". So the gadget gal is in there so she offers to take it apart and check it. She claims there isn't anything wrong with it and that it has the same amount of spring as the volume buttons. She then noticed that when she put the battery back in the phone came on automatically, I said it's not supposed to do that and she agreed but fortunate for me since I cannot turn it on. She then says I'm eligible for an upgrade and try's to sell me a new phone. I don't want a new contract.
So should I try and buy a new button and change it or could it be something else? Thank you in advance.
Are you using a case for your phone by any chance? If yes, is it too tight? Maybe the power button gets stuck because of that sometimes? Just a long shot! You stated that power menu pops up once in awhile when you're using it, is it possible that the way you grip the phone causes that? (Just trying to help and not trying to offend you btw.)
You might want to try flashing UCKK4 with bootloader(use it from the one click master collection of stock rom's) just to make sure that there is no issue with the firmware. It is not likely to fix your problem but it's good to have a clean start. At least that's what I would do to begin with.
Since you're willing to change the power button, why not do an experiment? Remove the power button and see if there is any change? If it works fine then it's the power button that's faulty else it's a hardware problem.
