Amtel maXTouch sensor question.... - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read that the Galaxy S has an Amtel maXTouch sensor which is great news.
However, when I watch the video demonstration on the maXTcouh sensor, they said it works with fingernails, stylii, and even gloves on.
Is that the case with the Galaxy S?
Does it work with fingernails and gloves? That'd be a first for a capacitative touch screen from what I've seen.
This would be HUGE news if true. Can someone test this out and report your findings?
Thanks.
[Darn, posted this in the wrong section. Can a mod move this to the General section?]

I just tested this and sorry to say but, the screen on my Samsung Galaxy S I9000 only works with my finger, it barely works with my nail (it doesn't detect my nail most of the time) and I haven't tried it with gloves, but don't expect much.

it is a capacitive display so it will only work with our finger or any skin part of our body.. it is like a magnet with north and south pole.. the screen is north pole and our skin is south pole.. when they get in contact.. they attact each other.. uhmmmm.. the sensor decodes.. maps and then respond to whatever action we perform on the screen..
..i guess, in a nutshell.. capacitive displays needs a conductive/conductor like material for example our skin in order to work.
..hmmm.. maybe you can read wiki about touchscreen for better information. hehehe.

It actually works my Fingernails if I touch the screen.
With gloves, however, I didn't have any success.

I can also verify this

it works with nails (must be very short) and through thin cloth. this is because (magnetic) conductor is close enough to detect "contact"

I have been using resistive screens for many years and I was quite used to using my fingernails. This was also my greatest concern as regards capacitive screens.
From this perspective I can tell you that the capacitive screen works fine with my nails for all reasonable purposes and now I cannot use anymore my touch hd's resistive screen. Trust me on this one - you will get used to it very quickly and you will love it!

ahahaha, that is true and with thin cloth because the sensor can still detect our skin which is conductive.. which means that the sensor is kinda good.
..i asked my friend with longer finger nails and the screen didn't respond.. which means that it will only respond when it can detect a conductive material being used on the screen. ")

Mmmm - no I don't think so. A) The Iphone is capacative and uses screen protectors. B) HTC HD is not even out yet so there's hardly any accessories for it yet. There's no desk stand yet but doesn't mean it can't use one
Thanks. Was just wondering because Martin Fields usually is very up to date and they haven't got anything yet. And my HD2 is supposedly delivered on November 13.

I've been really curious how capacitive screen really works! And indeed, capacitive screens still works with screen protectors. I have applied Invisibleshield for my previous Ipod Touch, and it still works.

To my knowledge, capacitive screens work by detecting tiny currents passed across the skin. Kinda like completing a circut for current to cross. As human skin conductive to a degree this is what enables capacitve touch screens to be in theory much more responsive than resistive touch screens. The fact it works through a screen protector is because the protector itself allow tiny electrons to pass and complete the so called circut for hte device to know where we have touched the screen.
There are screen protectors available in Singapore.
It is common knowledge that the HD2 screen is a little too sensitive, especially for typing. After applying a screen protector, the sensitivity seems to be JUST RIGHT! I can type at least as accurately as my diamond2.
this why there aint many srceen protectors..

Touch screen. What can I use beside my finger?

Coming from a Touch Pro where anything worked as a stylus,
I started trying different things to see what I could get to work for a situation when I'd rather use a stylus. Needless to say, I haven't had much luck.
I also discovered the dang thing doesn't work with gloves on. Which will really suck for you northerners trying to text or answer your phone at a football game.
Any tricks? It's not a huge deal, I'm just curious what makes the thing work.
Sorry if this has been discussed, I tried searching touch screen and screen sensor. If there's already a topic on it, please send me in the right direction and close this topic.
pretty sure you are seeing the differences between a resistive and a capacitive touch screen. Resistive works on pressure - hence anything working.
Capacitive works on current. Your finger passes current to the screen, which it registers. Gloves dont work since they dont pass the current through (I do recall seeing some gloves with a metal bead in the fingertips to pass the current though)
Soo there you have it. Theoretically, anything that can pass the current from your finger to your phone should work, but be careful with the screen.
Finger shaped sausages.
Sausages and the type of bags your hard drives/graphic cards usually come in. Can try wrapping them around a pen or something, I guess.
I've read that electro static protection plastic wrapped over a stylus works.
Hard drives come covered with it. (grey color usually with lines across it)
A toe may work if your hands are full and you have to send a text.
How about your nose?
Could always try using your tongue.
there are a few organic stylus options that are available.

Yes in your other head.
I've found that a AAA battery works quite nicely. Only one side works, though, and I don't recall whether it was positive it negative.
Just put a small hole in you glove and touch the screen, with your finger through it. I am in Canada, and it is cold, but I don't wear gloves, and if I do, they are pretty thick to make hole though.
btw: this is my first post

capacitive pens are almost useless!

At least the two i got from ebay are! makes using some apps and stuff almost unusable, scrolling is almost impossible. I have a screen protector fitted but everything is smooth with my finger.
Anyone else have any experience with using pens?
yeah it works kind of okay when pressing (however you have to press hard sometimes.. also scrolling is indeed impossible. i bought those pens so i could play cryonphysics better but thats a no go
so i wouldnt buy stylus's for scrolling.. or maybe the expensive one's work better? i bought cheap ones from ebay.
stylus
I haven't heard of any that work very good at all! Would be interested if someone finds 1 that really works decent,, Thanks,,,Quig

Those ones are a joke as well, barely even works.
i think our device is designed for our fingers
sense is fingerfriendly, even windows explorer can be used with fingers...thanks to our huge screen
so why buying such a crap?

I have it, it has a plus and a downside. The downside is that scrollng is almost impossible therefore you still need to use your finger. The plus side is that the precission is astonishing. The little red dot does the job you want. You can click on listed links while browsing without zooming in and without selecting the link next to it.
Still it is not worth the 17 pounds.
Also these styli ARE Dagi styli http://www.dagi.com.tw/, since I bought one of these aswell to compare.
They are exactly the same. Same weight, material, length/width/depth etc.
So if you want to buy one. Dagi sells them for around 12 USD a piece.
I'm not able to post any pictures atm, since I'm not at home. If I am I will.
Stylus pens
No pen works very well on the HD2, so do not waste any money on buying one.
The only time you may need a pen, is if you work with gloves on, or wear gloves due to extreme cold weather and do not want to take your gloves off.
I have tried most of them as I spend a lot of time in a walk in freezer. The HTC is no better than the dagi or the cheaper versions from China sold on ebay.
I saw a video somewhere on youtube if im not wrong, it shows how you can make cheap pen for capacitive screens. You have to use and old normal pen, some wire and some conductive foam and it worked fine on the video.
Edit: I found youtube link , here it is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smBOaEP3ut8
Maby it will help someone who need a stylus for hd2.
Best regards. Gjizaqin
It may have to do with hardware evidenced by tests like this one. The HD2's digitizer just isn't designed to be written on in terms of polling rate and sensitivity, so it may not completely be the fault of the pens.
try a sausage... they work well, i am not joking!!

at least its cheap...
There is a cheap stylus that works!!!
I'm not gonna recommend any particular ebay trader over any other, but I've tried almost all the supposed capacitive styluses (stylii?) out there and found only two that actually work.
There's the HTC one with the funny flat clear plastic 'blade' thingie with the dot in the middle of the flat 'blade' to line up the bit you want to interact with. They work, but they are awful (sorry HTC, it's true, patent or no they are still awful!). And way over the top pricing! WAY over the top! C'mon HTC!
And then there's this one: ://cgi.ebay.com.au/3-x-Capacitive-Stylus-HTC-DESIRE-01-Silver-/110537325379?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item19bc89bb43
(and here's where the bit about "any particular trader" comes into it - though the trade with me was just fine). Damn cheap, three to a pack and they actually work. No, seriously, I mean it - they work!
They have a kind of soft blobby rubber bit on the end (much like smooth squash ball material, I guess) that is soft to touch the screen and very accurate and it actually registers every press! Unlike all the other styluses (stylii?) out there, screen touches from this one are actually registered!
And if I need to slide the stylus across the screen, I rub a touch of nose oil (from the OUTSIDE of my nose!) onto the tip. This may just be needed because the screen protector I use is fairly 'grippy', though - it might not have the slide problems used directly onto the glass screen. I usually just use my finger for the sliding bit and the stylus for everything else.
All those hard rubber tipped stylus out there? Junk. All those foam tipped stylus out there? More junk. Pretty looking, in fashion colours, but junk none-the-less!
This is not a paid advert for anybody whatsoever - just my experience from my extensive junk stylus collection... Must find some creative use for them all...

I got some off ebay a while back.
Didn't work very well, at all.
Had it bookmarked but link is gone.

I ordered these, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...849513&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2824wt_911 and will let y'all know how they work. Even if they don't, they were only $4.
i have tried 4 different types of capacitive stylus for the hd2. the only one that works is the htc knockof by Dagi. The product is solid, BUT you have to place the pen end on the hd2 screen at a particular angle every time to get it to work. I swear somtimes they make things harder than they have to be. The pen point is not a point at all. It is a clear plastic circle with a dot in the middle. You have to handle it with extreme care because it can easly snap off and there goes 20 bucks. I guess I will still have to use my finger.

Unfortunately, that is the problem with the capacitive screen. The so-called stylus is actually something that emulates your finger tip in terms of contact area. Personally, a very sensitive resistive screen, such as in Samsung I8000 (Omnia 2) is better than the capacitive screen if you do a lot of text work involving copying, cutting and pasting!

Kensington Virtuoso Touch stylus first thoughts

This one :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kensington-...X39I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342685483&sr=8-1
It's very well made and has a good heft to it, feels like quality. I've only been able to test it on my TP as N7 still on the slow boat from Timbuktoo, the TP is not as sensitive as the N7 and pressure sensitive apps don't seem to work on it so more on that when the N7 arrives. That said the stylus is very responsive and the tip does not 'stick' to the screen although I suppose it depends what (if any) screen protector you have and how tacky it is so ymmv.
The pen end is not a gimmick, it takes Parker refills so that's a big plus point, the lid clips on firmly and the pocket clip is very strong but there's nowhere to store the cap when you are using the pen as it won't fit over the stylus tip, that's a minor problem though..
I have only one big gripe but which could be a problem if you intend to use it for long periods, when using the stylus end the balance point is too far back for my liking and the stylus wants to tip back all the time, given it's weight this is noticeable quite quickly. The balance point is a tiny bit forward of the line of the cap joint which is about the two thirds mark. You can ease the problem by taking the cap off the end but that exposes the pen nib with all the dangers of drawing on your hand/clothes as well as the screen.
As I said above, it's a well made piece if kit and well worth the money, I've used a few styluses from checp nasty ones to better quality, this one is by far the best I've used yet even given the balance issue.
I got this as well and am very happy with it! This is my first tablet, so maybe I don't know what a real good stylus is, but it feels really natural to use and I actually prefer it over using my fingers. Plus less smudging and the pen is handy as well
Got my N7 this morning and have had time to play with it, compared to the TP the screen responsiveness is in another league altogether.
The stylus is smooth running across the (as yet) unprotected screen and pressure sensitivity works very well, the Kensington gets a couple more stars from me
Update, Three weeks later and while the stylus is still as good to use, the pen cap is getting loose (rubber O ring a bit thin) which means it can come apart when hung from the clip. Drops a star for that.

My guess....he's using Quill or a similar app which has a tool that somehow manages to mimic pressure sensitivity.

I wonder if there's an app that can transfer pressure sensitivity via Bluetooth or WiFi.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I spoke of pressure sensitive Apps, not the N7 screen. I can't speak for all Apps but Markers is one that responds well to the stylus. I think it may be sensing tip coverage but it goes much further than just the area touched by the stylus (or your finger) try it and you'll see what I mean.
Final thought on this stylus, I've given up on it!
The tip went soft and started dragging on the screen and I got to dislike the feel of the stylus so much (especially the surface roughness) that I had to force myself to use it, so it's consigned to the drawer. I can use the pen refill elsewhere.
Moved on now to an Applydea Maglus, opinions pending

I've had to ditch this stylus too - after about a month of smooth note taking using Quill the stylus has started to skip when writing, i've no idea why as it still looks solid enough and the screen is fine. But it keeps dropping out and makes it impossible to use now as a stylus...
Just recieved a Smith & Wesson tactical stylus and its fantastic on the N7 so far - works really well with the pressure effects in Quill too!
So bye bye Virtuoso
