GPS apps for Android - similar to Garmin or IGO - Touch Diamond2, Pure Android Development

Are there any apps for Android that are similar to Garmin Mobile XT or IGO8 that use the map data stored on your SD card? I don't have a data plan for my Pure so I want to use something close to those apps.
Thanks.

currently i am using rmaps which is a great app. you just have to put your map in sdcard and select it from rmaps menu. if you want the maps you can get your desired map from mobile atlas creator. hope this is what you want.

Personally, program would run faster if it was installed on the device, but to save space....storage card is for that.
It depends on the program and your personal habbits.
If you are one that has multiple memory cards and swaps them in/out or uses wm5torage, I would suggest programs you use often to be installed on the device.
if you're like me and just leave a card in the phone, then either way
i never swap cards. so i guess it doesnt matter huh?
Nah, I install all the important ones onnthe phone and all the ones that are not so important on the SD, right now there are none. I guess Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, and Dig Dug are important .
With some roms over 140+ mb space, it definitely won't hurt to install your programs to the main memory. Also, I've run into errors and duplicate folders, ect. from installing to the SD Card.
If you install to sd card, you won't loose anything, except registry entries/configuration, after a hard-reset/rom-reflash. I put all my stuff there that I hate restoring.
I install everything to the sd card, only install apps on the phone memory if the program requires it or an app doesn't like running from the sd card.
No its almost the same, if you have an external HDD, then they will show up in controll panel remove programs, and it will be on the desktop, but when you remove the HDD it will be there but wont run.
They way I do it is if the program runs all the time, lets say a complete system overlay like SPB Mobile Shell or PocketPlus, a real system type program I'll install it on the device. But if it's just an app I run once in a while say Google Maps I'll install it on the card because it only runs when I choose to run it..
Hope that helps!

I do find that programs like mobipocket run much better when I install to the phone. Seems to hang alot from the card. To me it appears that the phone memory has much quicker access time, but not every program is affected.
I think of it more as the difference between a portable app installed on a usb stick versus the same program running off the desktop.
One other thing to consider (at least it was the case with WM2003SE devices) is if the program/util was run at startup, automatically, it made a lot more sense to put it phone memory, as otherwise the delay in waiting for the SD card to be accessible could cause a slowdown/even hangs!
I install the majority of applications onto my 8GB storage card.
However, I've just discovered that whenever I remove my 8GB memory card, my device memory rises incredibly...
I guess it depends on the type of app you're installing. Something like MagiCall I put on the device so there's no problem blocking calls, but Mio Maps right on the memory card with just a shortcut in the /Windows/Startup Programs folder. If the apps important, then device, but if it's just Pac Man for example, card.
Interesting responses. I've installed apps that the instructions say "Must NOT install on SD card" in the instructions. Some say "You may install on SD card, but be aware that it may be unstable".
comments?

Thats there for your safety, it means that if you have any data loss of any kind it wont be the applications fault. It may need to be next to the registry but it really doesnt matter. Games and such, SD card, system tools and registry editors may need to be in the main memory but don't have to.
I install applications on the storage card, and Today plugins on the device. The only "Application" I have on my device itself is Slide 2 Unlock.

Thank you bt1980, Map droyd seem to be very good.
Try Maverick. It is better. Much better. It works with mapnik, yandex maps, google maps. Works exectly like Google Maps application, but has more features.

Newbie help for memory management & Gps

can anyone advise of the best method to enable installing apps to sd card as opposed to phone memory.
I have done some reading up, from what I can make out, my 2.2 is not rooted, apps need to have the option written into programming to enable where an app is stored, hence why the "move to sd" is greyed out.
I have read but not fully understood some apparent fixes, using sdk tools and apps2sd, but seen some errors reported, apps not working, unable to use marketplace etc. A mine field for those not in the know.
Last thing I want to do is mess things up, hence why I am asking you guys for help.
I am happy with most things on the Nexus, but as I am now out of phone memory, need to address this issue quickly. I have added a 16gb sd. Any help greatly appreciated.
Additionally, is it possible to use google based navigation systems offline and by gps? and when using third party gps, is it possible to use my external bluetooth gps receiver rather than the phone one? if so, how is this acheived please.
Root your phone, and learn how to use the Froyo apps2sd command.
No, Google Maps downloads the maps frame by frame -- read needs internet connection. (look into 3rd party applications if you don't have a data plan)
No, you have to use the phones GPS.
apps2sd, does that not have issues? I read there are issues with some apps not working, and also not being able to use marketplace

No, the pre-installed programs like Maps and YouTube shouldn't be impacted, they're in the /system/app folder, not the /data/app folder (where user installed apps go). Even if the Google apps were deleted, they're all available in the Market, so no big deal to download them manually if necessary.
The DATA for the pre-installed apps will get erased, though.
Your battery usage pointing to google maps may be related to running the Latitude portion of google maps...it's constantly on and tracking your position. go into the settings for google maps (layers perhaps) and make sure Latitude is turned off.

The missing memory is used by the system and not available to you; this confuses many people, but you should be okay.
google latitude is not on
i cant clouse maps even in battery use if i click on maps and force stop it then refresh and its still there

Non-rooted, you might try going into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/ All then finding Maps and uninstalling updates. Also, clear data, clear cache, etc. This might help you out.
Are you rooted?
The way Android works, killing tasks isn't advised. One of the reasons is exactly what you're seeing (I think what you're seeing)...if you kill an app that Android thinks you're going to use again any time soon, it just re-opens it in the background. It shouldn't be sucking up any significant resources in that state, though. Android doesn't like a lot of free memory..the linux mantra is "free memory is wasted memory".
Anyways, if you're rooted, you can try getting Autostarts off the market and tell it to keep Google Maps from autostarting on boot.
Also, if you're rooted, you could use Titanium or Root Explorer to delete the Google Maps apk and then re-download it from the Market.
What he's experiencing is a growing problem with Google Maps. There's currently a ton of people commenting about it in the market and I've seen it first hand.
I sat down with a bunch of friends the other day (all of whom have one Android device or another) and we all checked our battery usage has Google Maps at either the first or second position on the list. In the group was my Nexus S, a Captivate, a Nexus One, and a G2. It appears to be a problem with the newest update, probably related to the caching its doing with the map data, but that's just a guess.

iGO navigation - running from phone memory?

Hi guys,
I am using iGo navigation on my Hero.
App is on the phone memory, gut working "iGO" folder (maps, sound) is on the memory card.
I was wondering, is there any way to put the "working iGO" folder from the memory card to phone memory, so the iGO app can run properly while memory card is being used by a car audio system as a mass storage device.
Thx in advance!

the files needed to make it actually work as a satnav are HUGE. there is no way it will fit on your phone memory alone. This is because iGO has maps stored on the phone, so you dont need to be connected to the internet.
If you want a satnav which will run while playing music through your car, use google navigation, as the maps are downloaded from the internet when you need them.
but yes, technically you could move the 'working iGO' folder over, but the PATH would be incorrect, so the app would not find the necessary files.

Thx for you answer
Actually my "iGO" folder on the memory card is only 27,1 MB, because i deleted all unnecessary maps and voices. Its running with no problem from the card, but the question is, is there a way to change PATH and copy "iGO" folder to the phone memory?
Yes, but it will take alot of time, you have to change every single iteration of a PATH in every single script to the new one.
Trust me, it ain't worth it
ok, many thanks for you answer!
Another related question ...
I tried something else ...
Im running music player and iGO.
Music is playing in the background and igo nav is working ok in front.
Till the moment i what to chose a different music track from the music player witch action sends iGO to the background and shuts down GPS, causes me to lose gps connection and position.
Is there a way to keep GPS ACTIVE / ON all the time?
Thx

It is on all the time, just iGO looses it's priority when it goes into the background (android trying to save power) so you won't have signal.
I have no idea if there is anything you can do to stop this from happening, you could just lock your screen and use the next track buttons on the lockscreen and when you unlock it, iGO will still be in the foreground and you will have a different track playing.
Andyt95 thx for your effort and willingness to help me solve my problem.
After few hours of searching and searching Market, i found app witch dose exaclly what i need.
Its called "GPS Assist", and it will keep you GPS hardware fully active (no mater if the gps needed app is running in the background) for a predefined period of seconds (by default 300) witch is more than enough for my needs.
