[Guide] UAString - Galaxy Tab 10.1v Android Development

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to make a quick guide on how to change the UAString.
This of course will enable you to default to the desktop view over the mobile view like i know you all want to.
Step 1.
Open up the browser, type into the URL bar "about:debug" and press enter.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Note:
After entering about:debug the URL will default back to the URL of the page you are on but there are now extra options available to use in the menu.
Step 2.
Now open up the menu in the top right and click on settings.
Step 3.
Now you are in the settings menu head on down to debug and then click on UAString.
Step 4.
Here is the list of available UAStrings I personally use desktop(it will make all websites think you are on a desktop computer so no more mobile website by defualt)
Step 5.
Now to get out of debug mode, back out of the settings menu and enter "about:debug" in the URL bar and press enter.
Step 6.
Now to quickly check to make sure you have correctly exited debug just click on the menu icon and make sure you have the normal control set again.
Now head out into the interwebz and enjoy not defaulting to mobile sites

Nicely done with the Screens! +1
This post should be added to the a complete guide when its made

Thank You!!! This was driving me NUTS!!
You Da Man!!

Thanks mate. Does this setting stick across sessions or does it reset back to normal when you exit? Will try it when I get home.
I read somewhere that the Xoom needed a hacked framework to make the change permanent.

Seems to stick. I closed the browser in the settings==>applications menu and it was still in desktop mode. Ill try and find the details about the Xoom issue and see ifit is reproducable on the tab.

works for me also thanks alot

thanks for the instructions
but unfortunately this doesn't work reliable. some websites still detect the device as a non-desktop device, e.g. www.bild.de, and forward to their respective mobile-sites. don't know why.
but for the most of the sites, it works perfectly.

How did you get the "Labs" options in your browser settings? I can't seem to have it on mine.

For me the debug mode doesn't persist between sessions. The UA change is saved, but I have to go into debug mode every time the browser is started. So I set my homepage to about:debug and have to press enter on the address bar each session.
Tried this on Engadget and Facebook.

"interesting" thing: with about:debug i set my uastring to froyo-n1 (or whatever the last entry is called), then the browser crashed. now everytime i enter about:debug, the browser crashes immedialtely. cannot revert this setting anymore. already did a reboot - no success. don't wanna do a factory reset.
do you have any hints on this?

Try clearing data and cache from settings==>applications==>MANAGE APPLICATIONS menu.

I honestly feel we should start email campaigns to the bigger websites to get them to identify this Android version as desktop to save us from this constant issue.
Ever since android was flash enabled , and many sites went over to HTML for the douchepad I see no reason to continue to I.D Android for teeny mobile versions.
It SHOULD always be an option in reverse. As in you can opt in to mobile browsing.
Oh and USatring never seems to stick for too long.

Yer try ipad uastring it seems to override a lot of issues, also dolphin and opera do uastring a lot better
Also because of RIM there is still a huge requirement for mobile sites to be defaulted as it's a b*tch to opt into mobile view on such tiny screens.
And with ice cream sandwich we will loss out again on the same privileges the ipad is getting
But the real simple fix would for web devs to make m.domain.region to be mobile and domain.region to be full content
Anyway we don't live in a perfect world, and if we did XDA would be a little pointless. But I love finding fixs more then i hate finding problems

how'd you get Labs to show up?! been trying to find an answer to that
i use Dolphin Browser now, as the Desktop option sticks.. but i'd switch back to stock browser for the quick control

Labs should be there regardless of whether debug is on or off.
Sorry i cannot be more help would test to see what environments it does not appear in but sending my 10.1v back today, got sick of the sluggish performance and screen bleeding.

This didn't work for me (Eclair) and hosed my Home screen. Repeated reboots led to the activate prompt, which fails regardless of net connection status. Had to use B&N native access to Apps, and 'Home Switcher' to recover my Zeam homescreen. :|
Is this appropriate for the NC? Does it have a bunch of "phone" stuff that can't be hidden? I have dnlded it & will wait to see some examples of it's functionality.
Watching for all you creative people that are smarter than me to give it a review.

It looks great. Still don't know how to setup everything yet but this looks so much better than Honeycomb.
OK, should have taken notes. What were the installation steps? They, along with the link, have disappeared.
Cheers,

Mine keeps saying "device not supported" after I click to activate, and then it FCs... any ideas? Is there a step I'm missing, or something?
I uninstalled it for now...
(Autonootered 1.01)
Anyone have this working & have any comments? Need the installation steps, as they have been removed from the link. I know this is unreleased Beta, but I would like to try it. PM me the info, if it's not appropriate to continue posting in this thread.
Thanks,
kev
I would really like to get this working as well. I got it installed, but it says "device not supported" If there is a way to get it working, I would be very appreciative of a little help.
Hm... thats actually pretty nice.
I went to Market & then App Brain & tried to dnld Stupid Zombies. Had to reboot it after it froze. Now when I try to launch spb, I get the activate screen, press yes & then get an activation screen that says, Activating SPB Mobil'e Shell..." with a cancel button. It will not proceed beyond this point. If I press Cancel, OH WAIT!! It finally went to the next screen then the normal "device not supported" screen. Took a looooong time, as compared to previous startups. It's back up now. I started to abandon this post, but will post it in case someone else has the same problem. Haven't customized it yet. Lots to learn. This app may be worth the asking price. We'll see.

"device not supported"
I get "device not supported" on my NC running phiremod nook V4.. Any ideas on how to get it to work?
Thanks!
I get the same "Device not Supported" message each time I register it. Then it just works. Don't know the implications, but it seems to be fully functional.
Cheers,
kev
P.S. Can't figure out how to rename panels or set SPB to switch to landscape. Anyone?
Trial period!
Hopefully this beta release has this turned off???
Quote from 3.5 user manual:
"Registration
You will be able to use SPB Mobile Shell until the end of the trial version period of 15 days. If you have not
registered SPB Mobile Shell within this timeframe, you will need to do so to continue using it.
To obtain the serial number you need to purchase a SPB Mobile Shell software license and you will receive your
serial number by e-mail."
My concern is that I will like this app. & will not be able to buy a copy that I can register on the NC.

I got the same error. If I wait about 1 minute (maybe less) and then dismiss the error, the SPB works.
While visually impressive in an "ooooooh! Shiny things!" sort of way, there's a few issues:
* The 3.5 beta that I was able to install is clearly designed for a smaller screen. The icons and the spacing on the spacious 7" NC screen is HUGE. I can't find a way to change the resolution to take better advantage of the large screen.
* The SPB launcher does not toggle between portrait and landscape. Bummer.
* The animations in the carousel mode don't really serve any purpose beyond being dancing bologna.
* While SPB touts a great deal of customizability, however that appears to just be at the surface level. I can't find a way to change fonts, tab labels, or set individual panel wallpapers.
I don't know that this will be quite worth $30.
Darn it. I get a "device not supported" error. How did anyone manage to make it work.??

All I needed to do was remove the Zeam launcher from being the default action of the "n" key. Reboot. After unlocking, the NC will prompt you for which launcher to use. Select the SPB. It will go thru the activation process. When you get the unsupported device message, just dismiss it.

Can't enable full webpages

Hi,
I can't seem to get full webpages view to work on my Optimus 2x (froyo).
I tried going into the stock browser, typing "about:debug" in the address bar, go into setting, then UA then select desktop. After a searching the web this seems to be the way to get it done, but it doesn't.
For instance: When I try to open "www.nfl.com" it always directs to the mobile version. I tried almost every browser, but no change. I even installed Dolphin Browser HD and the addon called "Desktop Toggles", but that didn't work either.
Does anyone have a solution?

There is no other settings, i don't have this problem with most pages but in you case you can click on “view full webpage“ bellow the page.
Have you opened your browser, go yo menu/settings/disable mobile pages? That works for me for most pages (except facebook, I think)

Did you even try skyfire browser? Skyfire for winmo gave exact desktop pages (haven't tried for android)

I got an error message from the webpage when I did that.
I tried every browser out there (also skyfire) but it will not display nfl.com in desktop view.
I previously had an touch pro 2 with opera 9 and to view full webpages i only had to uncheck the "uaurlprof" in the opera:config user prefs menu. I never had a problem with any webpage.
I tried opera but this method also didn't work.
It's killing me!
I want to watch flash nfl video's that are on the full webpage!
Hope someone has a einstein-like solution.
I tried the site on the default browser.
I don't get the desktop version until I use about:debug on the site itself. I first opened nhl and was redirected to the mobile site (browser set to desktop), when I opened the settings I reclicked the desktop setting by about:debug, after a refresh I was seeing the next site.
Weird behavior..

Try - Hidden Menu | Browser Utility
If you really want control.
Report back if it withstands a reboot... would be interested.
May only work for stock browser.

I’m guessing you’ve had enough of WAP browsing even though you set your browser UAstring to desktop etc.
You need to do the following 2 things detailed below, you’ve already done the second by the looks of it.
First:
Create a shortcut to the hidden menu buy doing the following:
Example using LauncherPro [free of the market], (others will use a similar method):
Long press on home screen
Select Shortcuts
Select Activities
Scroll down to and expand com.lge.hiddenmenu
Select HiddenMenu (first entry)
Enter Shortcut name
Click on shortcut to launch
Enter Browser Utility > Enable/Disable X-wap-profile (should see a 0 zero if set correctly)
Reboot phone, most sites should show the full desktop style web page.
Second:
From your browser type ‘about:debug’ without the quotes into your address bar, press enter. Nothing will happen;
Click More > Settings > Debug > UAstring > Desktop
All done, full webpages from every site!
Thanks to ‘blog.optimus2x.net’ for showing me how to enable the hidden menu.

Really neat stuff. works perfectly!
I was wondering if it is possible to completely disable quick launch in a similar way? I have a droid 4 with a physical keyboard that is running jellybean so the regular quick launch menu isn't available to disable it. I followed your directions and I am able to open quick launch with the terminal, but I can't set the preset shortcuts to nothing, I can only select another app. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

wanted to add though that another way of accessing quick launch is using nova launcher, some other launchers would allow it too. long-press on home screen > short cuts > activities > expand "settings" > QuickLaunchSettings

Ok, thanks a lot. The problem I was having was that while texting with the physical keyboard it would randomly open up the phone app and start typing whatever I was typing into the contact search and subsequently calling people before I realized what was happening. I assumed this was a problem with the quick launch selecting the contacts app and causing problems for me. I really don't know how the quick launch was being activated in the first place though as the only "search" button I have that activates the quick search is located on the face of the phone and I know I am not pressing it. Do you know of any other methods of activating quick launch which a physical keyboard or if there is a glitch with a phone that was upgraded from ICS to Jellybean?
Thanks again,

I used to have the same problem when I was running the stock ROM. Occasionally while using the physical keyboard, the phone would start jumping to random programs. The problem wasn't consistent, but was easily solved by rebooting the phone. I haven't had the issue since switching to AVATAR ROM. Must have been a bug in the stock software.

To take a scrolling screenshot or scroll capture on the Note 5:
Open the content you wish to take a scrolling screenshot of.
Take out the S Pen to launch Air Command, tap on Screen Write.
The screen will flash and capture a single screenshot, then press Scroll capture in the bottom-left corner.
The screen will scroll, and you can select Capture more to keep going, or Done to stop.
Once you've captured everything, tap Share, Save in Gallery or Save in Scrapbook at the bottom of the screen.

If you changed the theme of the device the scroll capture goes away. I beleive it has to be on the default theme.
Bruh..... If you are going to post about an issue, post the screenshot of your actual problem.
It also only shows up on apps that scroll downward, such as a Web page on Chrome or the Settings menu.
And no, it does not remove the option based on your theme! If you are going to provide help, know what your talking about. If you don't know your stuff, GTFO and move on to the next thread. Dont post help about something you know nothing about.

Finally appeared after clearing the cache. Strange bug.
I'm having the same bug but I can't seem to fix it. I tried clearing the cache for air command but no change. Any suggestions?
Needed to necro this thread because I had the same issue of scroll capture not popping up. Solidmarc111 was right, you have to be on the default theme. I was on the material theme. Cleared air command cache and it didn't do anything. Changed theme back to default and works perfectly. Also wanted to say leo9891 is a fool for calling someone out so rudely when he is the one that "doesn't know his stuff." That is all.

Sorry man I just tested it, I am on ShineBlack theme NOT default and it works just fine for me, maybe your theme (material) removes it for some reason but this is not a problem with the theme I am using. So, NO you do NOT have to be on default theme. Seems leo9891 is not a fool after all, maybe test multiple themes before you comment?
Lol thanks for more data but Leo is still a fool since he said themes didn't matter and called the person out for it. With my phone I proved him wrong, therefore his rude comment was foolish. I had no need to test multiple themes to prove his statement was rude and foolish. It only had to effect one theme, which it did. Have a nice day though
I had the same problem. Had to reboot phone into manual mode then wipe cache partition. Now it's working fine for me.

Developer Mode Not Showing

I have the SM-N9600 model on TMO, running 8.1, and not rooted.
I tapped the Build Number repeatedly to turn on Developer Mode, and I accessed it the first time, but now it's not showing up anyplace. Also, when I try to redo it again, a little pop up says it's already been enabled.
Anyone have any ideas about this?

On the US Carrier version (SM-N960U), it's the very last settings section.
Guessing you've already scrolled down/looked around/etc...... just giving you where it's at on another model variant for reference.
Can you get to Developer Options by using the search function within the settings section?

i was having the same issue, you tap the build number 7 times it says developer mode enabled. But when you scroll down, it's not there! What you need to do once developer mode enabled, you need to hit home button, close all tabs! Then go back into settings it will be the very last tab at the bottom!! I think it’s a bug!

Do you know of a way to pull it up? I mean, is there a way to get it to show up after you've enabled it, but didn't follow the steps you said? Like I said, mine says it's already enabled. I just tried to redo do it using your example, but with no success.

Have you tried cleaning you cache ? Try that enable dev mode, close all tabs, then clear memory. Then launch settings to see if you can see dev mode!

Just tried it, but still no luck. Thing is, it still says developer mode is already enabled when I tap the Build Number. I still tapped it 7 times just to make sure. I rebooted again too.

Perhaps use a shortcut maker or, use the one built-in to Nova Launcher.

Boot into recovery and wipe the cache partition then try! i can’t think of anything else or use other launchers as @KOLIOSIS has suggested!

I use Nova Prime already. How would I use it to make a shortcut?

Place a Nova Activities widget on your desktop, then, take a look around in the Settings section of the widget, see if there's something for Developer Options.

Glad you were able to access it.
Sux that you had to use a work-around,but,it beats doing a factory reset to see if you could get it back in the typical fashion.
I've ran into some weirdness w/Dev Options on other mfgs,ranging from the placement to some really weird WTH's fromOppo/Vivo that are worthy of another discussion.
If you happen to find Dev Options located somewhere else in the settings (about phone/etc...) or,it pops-up out-of-the-blue,please keep us posted. :good:

Using Nova Prime long press on screen to add widget, and use/hold/drag the Nova widget called "activities"
Next scroll down until you see section called settings, it's blue/white. Open that up then tap developer menu. Voila you will have a shortcut to what your having trouble reaching the usual way.
