[Q] Is it worth it to fix this? - HD7 General

A friend of a friend mine gave me a HTC HD7 for T-Mobile, because, well... It's trashed. He was going to just throw it away, but I took it figuring maybe I could get it up and running. Let me just say, it's in bad shape. (That's being nice.)
More photos are Here
The phone powers on, camera works, reads sims, both hardware buttons work. ...Everything else is pretty much trash.
I know the LCD/Digitizer is fused together, kind of like the HD2. So I'd buy a full LCD/Digitizer assembly for about 70 on eBay.
I'm not too concerned about the midframe, Maybe eventually replace it. They are going for about 30 on eBay.
Am I wrong that all I would need at minimum is a new LCD/Digitizer assembly, and if I wanted to get it in pristine condition a midframe?

so, would be spending nearly $150 to repair plus your time?
i don't know if it would be worth it.
they are going for about $200 - $300 used on ebay.
so, up to you if your time and money is worth it.
sh4d0w86.

...unless you insure it, leave it for a bit, then claim...?
Not quite fixing it up, but would get you a replacement for a lot cheaper?

Tmousa charges a 130.00 copay for the insurance to replace it...

If I were the original purchaser, and the phone had been insured. Neither of these are the case.

Yeah it would cost relatively too much to replace the digitizer / LCD, and I understand it's a very difficult procedure anyway.
If I were you I would attach this to a set of speakers or a HiFi somewhere and configure it as a DLNA receiver (if you stream music this way in your home) or at the very least have it as a touchscreen WiFi radio / media player using HTC Connected Media, Mixtapes, 8tracks, TuneIn Radio, Lastfm or whatever from the Marketplace. That would be pretty cool. I have a pair of Samsung bluetooth speakers at home and it connects great ot my HD7. It comes with a remote so I never have to get the phone out of my pocket to change the track or volume. When my HD7 is finally retired, it's sole prupose will probably be this.
EDIT: of course the screen would need to be at least sort-of working for this; can't tell if it is or not

The screen is working. But, I'm going with a full display replacement. It's a lot easier that way... and I can sell the working display to recoup some of the cost. As far as the housing, That doesn't have to be done immediately.
The way I figure it now after posting here... I didn't pay anything for the phone, and there's nothing worth upgrading to on T-Mobile at the moment for a 2yr contract & full price data (I'm on $5 web2go) ... So, I'm going to go ahead also and drop my postpaid T-Mobile line. Going to get the new $30/mo Monthly4g plan and use the HD7 on it for a year or so... Maybe pick up the Radar 4g when it can be had for 100-150 or so at that time.

I just replaced the digitizer on an HD7 and a heat gun and a old gift card made the swap very easy. For around $60 and some time you can have that phone looking new, if all it needs is a digitizer and housing.
Here is a pic of the HD7 I did a few days ago:

Bloody Out Of Order Htc

I am absolutely inscensed to discover that HTC are bundling the leather cases with Orange HTC Diamonds.
These are the same cases that people who bought the offline HTC versions were denied.
Furthermore, you cannot buy the case seperately now - its sold out everywhere. Expansys for example say it will be a month before they source any more.
I cannot leave my touch in my pocket without a case.
Why is it out of order? You bought it without a case, now when people buy a different product that gets bundled with the case you get annoyed?
It's not like HTC are targeting you and leaving you all, everyone who buys a retail Touch Diamond doesn't get a case
Edit: Theres a load of cases on Expansys, the Krusell ones are especially nice
Do you mean the Pouches (S390, I think)?
If you are near Germany, check mobilejoker.de - atm selling them for 8.40€ each

Yes I mean the official pouch.
And yeah the Orange folks bought a different product (although I hear they are just generic HTC Diamonds anyway) but HTC cannot be bothered to manufacture anymore for those who bought the sim free device. Yes it IS out of order.
I live in the UK - the cases cannot be found anywhere.
I only want the official one.

Cool - Very Retro...... * I hear that Retro is very fashionable?? I've read that this case also "cleans" the diamond on the way in and out too removing smears and finger prints?
I have the Krussel Case - very happy with that?
As for the Orange package - the case will be compensation to the standard High Street buyer/user being stuck with the Orange Rom so give them a break?

Retro is so last year...
I had the same issue. My order was suddenly delayed with 22 days (Yesterday), but today I received an e-mail and it was shipped!
Pytom case
I go for the pytom leather bags. already had them for the Tytn 2 and even for my photo camera
www.pytom.ch
free case??????
my uk orange diamond is here today
will let you know if i get one in the box
They do get unbranded firmware AND a case AND some kind of dock thing.
I have an unbranded one, but I had a play on the Orange one in the shop yesterday and there wasn't even an Orange splashscreen! All the same as on my device, aside from a little cameo Orange logo on the battery cover. It even says 'HTC' below the screen rather than orange. The T-Mobile branded MDA COMPACT 4 (WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY) will have 'T-Mobile' on this section, although I believe the battery cover will be blank.
I don't get an upgrade till february and I wouldn't want to be on Orange anyway. T-Mobile are more apathetic about overusage of data when you're naughty, whereas Orange are ogres. Data plan/Diamond are an essential partnership so where I to be choosing a plan and not spending a small fortune on handset-only I know who I'd go with.
U kidding, right? The Orange Diamond in France has a completely customized ROM, plus the Orange logo on the back cover!
I was able to flash the original HTC Rom over it, so all is well, but the Orange logo on the back cover is there to stay... so these are definitely NOT "standard" Diamonds.
I forgot to mention the MDA COMPACT 4 is more rounded and has a customised magenta coloured theme.
How is it customised by the way? Please tell me they havent put that horrible Orange sidebar on there. W**kers.
I am ABSOLUTELY PISSED OFF now to discover that Orange customers not only get an unbranded device - they get the case (which is still impossible to find seperately in the UK) AND that snazzy dock.. all in the box.
HTC have really screwed over those who bought the phone offline.
Orange HTC Touch Diamond
I received my Touch Diamond this morning and can confirm that I did indeed get a leather pouch, however there is no TomTom 7 on my phone.
In the box there was the following:
Phone
Battery
Charger
Hands free kit
USB cable
Spare stylus
Suppose I can just put on the TT7 from my trinity, will let you know how it goes

ORA USB Cradle (Thoughts?)

Im considering buying this cradle
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194466
As I have a £15 voucher to spend at expansys and I thought it would be useful and nice to get a cradle. I dont want to spend much over the free £15 and so this one came to my attention It looks quite nice, I did have one thought though, how will it fair when flashing ect.. does it act just like a usb cable or will it have problems going through the flashing process?
Also I want to get some peoples opinions on it,
Thanks in advance
[★]
Looks identical to the one I bought from Clove the other day. Only difference is that yours seems able to charge a spare battery as well.
The stand has a low centre of gravity and appears robust. The plastic guard at the back helps locate the device onto the connector AND hold the device securely in place.
On mine you can sync and charge at the same time provided you use the charging device that should come with the stand.
Is this enough detail for you or do you want more?

I know you have a voucher for expansys but i bought this for £20+del.

Details and other images availalbe on the link above.
It connects via the micro usb and the 3.5mm headphone socket. There is a 3.5mm socket on the back so that you can put it through external speakers. The only downside is that if you dont connect it to external speakers then you dont hear the phone if call or message comes in as it thinks its connected to a headset (not a big problem for me as i ignore most until im ready to speak or reply to them). It holds my HD2 solidly .

Ahh thanks for the response Funny, I can get THAT one two at expansys, it looks the same from the picture http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194343 So it would cost me £20 aswell lol. Its just that is pushing it a bit price wise (I like to hoard money lol)
@ [*],
Not used my version of the stand for anything else yet other than charging the device and syncing/file transfer routines which it does well. Can't see why running in bootloader mode should be a problem but I have not tried it yet.
As I said mine is the one from Clove not the one you are on about; however, apart from the spare battery slot, they look very very similar.
Why don't you just order it and give it a try. If you don't like it then send it back under the 7 day distance selling rules and get your money back (I am assuming you live in the UK).

Yeah maybe your right, I should just go for it, I will probably go for that cheaper one, (the first one I posted) as if you look at the other one a couple of posts up, it would cost me £20 instead of £10 (with vouchers applied) and the only difference appears to be (havent fully read through it yet) the speaker? which isnt a big deal to me.
And I would appreciate if you could test the bootloader/flashing, of course your not obliged to as I know its a pain, but I would really appreciate it (maybe flash a radio?)
And yeah, UK

cracked back resolved (uk)

just a quick note to say that after a week away with the sony repair centre in the uk i have got my z3 compact back.
i suffered from the back glass getting a crack from one corner to the opposite one without any bangs or drops.i had the device from new for 6 days.
sony have repaired the device under warranty without cost.
the only cost i had was £8 special delivery with royal mail to send it in.
i know others have reported getting their devices back without the cable and plug they had to send in but this was not the case for me.
just wanted to share my experience if anybody else has this problem, although i think it is fairly rare and hopefully only happens on early models.
cheers

Hi, my girlfriend has had the same thing happen to her 7 day old Z3 Compact. No signs of any sort of dropping or misuse, just a diagonal crack on the back case has appeared. Can I ask please, as you're in the UK too, how did you go about reporting/sorting this out? Straight to Sony or via your network provider? Did you contact them face-to-face, phone or email?
Any help will be appreciated as I feel a bit guilty by recommending she got this phone and getting her away from her usual iPhone.

hi mate, my phone is a unlocked model that i purchased on my own so i had to deal with sony direct.
i registered a xperia account and linked my phone to it to get the years warranty.then i raised a repair through this.they sent me the details of where to send it freepost. you will need your own packaging they supply nothing, also they suggest just dropping it in the post but i used royal mail special delivery.from then on the whole communication from them was awful.they say you can track the whole process and its updated all the time.this is bull .i had to contact them to get them to even acknowledge they even go my phone.i had no update on the whole process of them looking and repairing the device.it was repaired free of charge and the whole process was 1 week door to door.it came back via royal mail also.i was pleased with this of course but they never followed up with what may have caused the problem to start with.
do you have any ideas?
about 2 days before my crack appeared i shot about 2 mins of 4k video and the device got very warm.it was only put back in my pocket where it would have stayed until cooled.
let me know how your repair goes.
best of luck
I have yet to find out if the warranty will cover this. Surprised me one morning, 1 long diagonal crack on the back of my Z3 Compact.

The rear panel of mine cracked from side to side under the Sony logo shortly after filming in 4k (it shut down due to overheating). To be fair, it cracked when I walked into the corner of a table with the phone in my pocket (screen inwards - old habits...). There were other firmware issues as well but the rear panel was the one that caused me most concern as it completely killed any semblance of water-resistance. Sony repaired and returned in about a week at no cost to me other that postage (see below). I would agree that their repair tracking facility is cack - when they sent me an email to say it was on its way back, they sent the wrong tracking code.
Mine is an O2 device but like you it was registered with them and I just raised a ticket online - I also paid for Next Day Special as I wasn't sticking it in the post without insurance. I never sent my charger as that wasn't the issue (and I didn't want to lose it).

You can buy parts that are subpar from China left and right. They are not obligated to be truthful to the buyers if they are OG parts or not. This is what happens with alot of on line sellers. They buy these parts from so called Good dealers and then when they sell them Custormers have issues. It happens all the time. They can even cause more harm. Send it back to HTC

Good luck. That goes to show that if the official wants that much for the display, anything that is less them say half the price is most likely not official parts. You have to be careful. Hell you can get a used one in swappa for like 150

It is very likely that problem is coming from an improper connection with the LCD flex cable and the FPC connector on the main motherboard. I had it happen before when I didn't fully connect the cable back when I was putting the phone together. Unless, otherwise the flex cable is damaged or has some other issue.
Your options are to
open the phone and inspect it yourself, you can do it for free and this keeps your costs to a minimum. You need to be careful or you risk damaging your back cover.
send it to a local repair shop to have a look (hopefully you can find someone trustworthy)
send it to HTC
I circled the location of the LCD connection on the main logic board.

[Q] warranty replacement/repair with unlocked bootloader

My unlocked Turbo has some issues with display. There are couple of dark spots in different areas of display that looks like dirt but it's not. It's most noticeable with bright background. I noticed it some time ago but I had screen protector on the display and I though it's something wrong with it. But I decided to remove it and found out that is something that looks like between outside glass and actual display. So my question is: if I contact Motorola directly and request replacement will they check for unlocked bootloader and void my warranty? Phone is in perfect physical condition with not even one scratch (tpu cover and screen protector from the beginning). I don't want to contact Verizon to get replacement because I got this Turbo trough Best Buy method to keep unlimited data so I don't want to risk loosing it.

From my experience, you are good to go. I have experience with Samsung, LG, and HTC warranty repair for hardware issues. All of them are repaired without mentioning unlocked bootloaders.
Worst scenario is that they returned your phone for free if they do care about your bootloader status

I think worst case is they charge me $500 because I need my phone so have to do advanced replacement or whatever they call it. I need to provide them with credit card number and they place a hold for $500 and ships replacement phone. Then I have 5 days to ship them my defective phone. So if they find out my bootloader is unlocked and warranty void they could technically just charge me this $500 because I will already have their phone.

You always have the chance to cancel the repair even after they hold you on the credit card. (I could be wrong, never like the idea of giving my credit card info to others).
You could try buy a Verizon prepaid phone and use it for the few days. (I am using a moto e 2nd generation as my backup phone for $30).
Since you already unlocked the bootloader, you would need to take the chance. But still, I think you are safe since the repair is an hardware issue on LCD. It has nothing to do with bootloader.
