Chances of our pre-orders getting delayed? - Nexus 7 General

So if you guys have been keeping up with the latest Apple crap, (READ) what are the chances that this injunction filed by Apple against Galaxy Nexus can creep over to stop us from getting our Nexus 7s?
Is it me or do you guys think that Apple is the worst thing to happen to innovation since the dark ages?
Update: The patents under question include data tapping and slide to unlock...

I doubt it, if anything Apple will have only shot for it recently, and it would take much longer than 3 weeks to even make it to court, also it wouldn't be clumped in with the galaxy nexus cause ones samsung the other asus

I don't think any of us really know. The patents that Google "infringed" on are things that every android smartphone does.

Ya i'm pretty sure its all against samsung if i recall, thankfully they kept their hands off of this.

How can this be delayed if it doesn't have a release date yet? ;-)
I'm already anxious about getting it and its only been a couple of days since the preorder

Ya, I cannot wait until it ships either.

Apple tried to ban the gs3 a couple of weeks ago, using the same patents they used to ban the nexus. I bet that they will focus on banning the gs3 ASAP...

Apple succeeded today in obtaining an injunction banning sale of ALL Samsung Galaxy devices, including the GS3. It remains to be seen if Apple will post the $100 million bond to implement the ban. It also remains to be seen if Apple will seek an injunction on the Nexus 7.

Nope, don't see anything about the S3 being banned.
Could use a direct link here.

we're still talking about Asus here. They never seem to ship a product on time.

Wholly cow, that would be just like crapple! The ironic part is; samsung touchwiz (not sure if this applies to the s3) doesn't use the standard Android sliders, but has a swipe glass to unlock thing that doesn't resemble ios at all! Apple is the worst thing to ever happen to the tech industry.

Why would pre-orders get delayed? For a start the Nexus 7 hasn't come under fire (yet) and for the injunction to happen, Apple would need to pay the bond in full. Regarding the ban against the GN, I don't think they have paid the bond yet. I'm quite thankful that all of this is happening in the US

The questionable bit here is (from AllThingsD):
Koh’s ruling prevents Samsung from selling the Galaxy Nexus or any other product that is “no more than colorably different” and infringes on the Apple patent in question.

Who knows how this particular judge would rule here, but she seems like an idiot and so she might very well rule that the SGSIII infringes.
That said, this WILL NOT apply to the Nexus 7, because as already mentioned the Nexus 7 is made by ASUS. In order to get an injunction there, Apple would have to bring a NEW lawsuit against ASUS (or Google, which they probably won't do) in whatever court will hear the case. A lawsuit CANNOT just be transferred to another entity that's not a party in the case.
Since it would take months and months to fire up a new lawsuit and get an injunction, there are absolutely zero concerns here.

I don't have any concerns about this Tablet being delayed by a lawsuit brought against it by Apple (not for those who pre ordered it already) it will take Months to prepare a lawsuit for an injunction against ASUS/Google.
Our pre ordered Nexus 7's and will ship and will be rooted/hacked long before any injunction is imposed.
I wonder how long it will take Google / Motorola to dig through their cache of Patents and bring injunctions against Apple?

16gb nexus 7 discontinued?

Well I was stupid and pre-ordered from Wal-Mart.com. My order status stated it would arrive today but that it hadn't shipped yet. I called their customer service and they said they had to cancel my order because my item has been discontinued from the distributor. Called gamestop and they said that not only are they out but they were told today they weren't getting anymore...anyone else heard this?

I heard Asus is refusing to make anymore until those that have suggested it would have been better to have Samsung or Motorola make them instead, apologize..
In other news, it could be a national holiday in China, like it was during the long wait for the Notion Ink Adam, where employees agreed to continue working during New Years celebrations instead of going on their yearly vacation to see their families. Perhaps this time they see no benefit and refuse to skip theirs..
Second wave 8/30 or still waiting on the SD (street date) of 8/05?
NOTE: I called my Gamestop, they didn't have any, she offered to look in the computer to see which stores nearby had them in stock. Went to one and exchanged mine on the spot.
My Gamestop called me today to tell me my replacement came in.
I also ordered from Wallmart and checked on my order yesterday they said that it was ready to ship today. Than today I get a email and was told that they could not ship it yet. This was after they told me that they had them!

Yeah, I think at the price point more people went straight for the 16GB. I know I did, I didn't even consider the 8GB.
Honestly though with either model and an OTG cable and a little root work, storage isn't really a limiting factor at all. People who really want an N7 and can find a 8GB now should scoop one up.

It's not discontinued as mentioned, probably just temporarily out of stock. In Sweden we seem to only get the 16GB version sometime during September. I would have been fine with the 8GB but it doesn't really matter to me either in price or storage.
They might have stopped to address the screen and creaking issues. That's just a guess though.

Even if they halted distribution, there's no way it's being discontinued. I really doubt that any Walmart rep has his or her finger on the pulse, and the Gamestop guy only said that they were expecting shipments but now they're not.
It is possible that Google wants to put a hold on things until they reign in the build quality.

Best Buy employee duh

So I went to bb today to see if they carried the Nexus or accessories. I glanced and didn't see it so I of course walked over to the "computer" employee working that area.
Asked her if they carried the new Google tablet. She asked me who made it, what the name of it was, and other questions that I would think a bb computer employee would know.
After answering her questions she goes to look but I knew at this point they didn't have anything. When she returns she says, "we don't have that but I do have the ipad"
I was speechless

As a BB employee I can say that a good majority of staff only know about the products in the department they work in. Just because we are near a department does not mean we work in said department. We generally do not sell the entire store. Also, we don't care which products you buy because we do not work on commission and even if we did we make the least amount of money (as a store) on apple products.

The A5X has an SGX 543MP4, that is 4 graphics processors (not just 4 cores) in one SoC, totaling 16 cores, 32 GFLOPS (vs about 10 in the Tegra 3 T30L).
Has dual channel DDR2 memory (vs single channel DDR2 in the Tegra 3).
An aluminum body.
The highest 264 DPI display in a tablet.
Amazing looking color quality.
I understand it is cool to hate on Apple. But let's not go nuts and say it's under specced. The iPad 3 is a beast. And I was shocked with such a great display they were able to stay at the $500 price tag, that is thanks to their bulk buying power no doubt.

Theory as to why LG is constantly out of stock, and why Google made a bad decision.

I have a theory as to why the Nexus 4 is out of stock, and for such a long time. This may or may not have been mentioned before (probably has) but I just wish to discuss it. Remember, this is purely speculation.
The reason LG has only made around 400,000 handsets and starved production was due to their own flagship, the LG Optimus G. Every single thing about this phone, is IDENTICAL to the Nexus 4, besides the fact the N4 is rocking stock stock android and the aesthetics are slightly different. The N4 has an advantage among the developer community with it being able to be torn apart and tweaked and tinkered with, unlike the OG which LG is still being a little b____ about the bootloader on many of their recent phones.
The 16GB LG Optimus G is $800 here in Australia, and the 16GB Nexus 4 is $400. You do the math.
I don't know if LG's actuaries are idiots or something, but they would have known about the guaranteed success of the next Nexus device, going on the sales figures of all the other devices. LG thought that making a tiny amount of profit on every Nexus device and in turn increasing their companies reputation in the mobile business, was worse than not making ANY profit on their CRAPBOX 3000 (LG Optimus G). I can see where they are coming from, as they don't want their spectacular flagship to be left in the dust with full stock, but zero sales so basically I think they were just chucking a cry or something.
SO DON'T HATE ON GOOGLE FOR THE LACK OF NEXUS'
What you can hate Google for, is choosing LG in the first place. Yeah, they may of felt generous and were trying to support them but at the cost of their own company getting hated? Why didn't they just buy LG like they did with Motorola, and that would be the end of it? When I heard of the new Nexus Device, I celebrating because for some reason I thought they were going to choose HTC for production (who knows why). Nek minnit, they choose some struggling company that either can't or won't keep up with production.
This may of looked like a run-out-of-the-mill rant, but this was some, high-quality, researched ranting skills to pay the bills.
Discuss.

I fail to see how you guys can always come up with such gossip.
Google has made contracts with LG and they are producing the amount Google demanded.
Whether it was Google ordering just a tiny amount of phones, or LG can't keep up with production, due to manufacturing errors or anything else, we will never know.
Also, LG is not a bad hardware manufacturer. They do have the capability to spit out hundreds of thousand devices a month, and they've proven that they can.
For your info: devices produced in October: 75k
Devices produced in December: 400k
As you can see, they can definitely keep up with the demand, it's probably just Google ordering only tiny amounts of it.
A contract breach, as in simply not delivering the amount of phones Google demanded, would have legal consequences for them, so I guess they will be thinking twice before hampering the production.
Cheers.

Lol, do you think "hundreds of thousands of devices a month" is anywhere near enough for a $600 phone priced at $350? Try several millions a month.
Oh and those production numbers were just speculation (albeit a logical one). No one knows the exact numbers.
Why does everyone blame LG? Is there a valid excuse for Samsung taking forever to restock the Nexus 10?

Yes, 400k might not be enough. But don't expect the nexus to sell like the iPhone or a Samsung galaxy. There simply is no marketing at all for the nexus. Companies like Apple and Samsung invest millions every year into marketing. Have you ever seen a nexus 4 ad other than on YouTube?
Probably not. The nexus' demographic is mostly tech enthusiasts.
I don't think LG is intentionally halting the manufacturing process, i mean they would be really stupid to do so, some of of you seem to forget that one of the biggests ways to sell is having quantity over price, if LG sells 5 million Nexus 4 that would make them a ton more money than selling 1 million Optimus G  , also it doesn't hurt that a lot more people are talking good stuff (regarding quality) about them, that could never hurt a company .
What LG did on purpose (in my opinion) was refusing to provide a 32 gb version of the phone , so if people want more storage (and LTE) they should buy the Optimus G

I'm sorry but this post is complete and utter rubbish. I have seen more adverts on telly for nexus 4 and nexus 7 than I have Samsung devices in the last month, so you cannot claim that there is no marketing at all. Get your facts straight.
Add to that the nexus adverts had me thinking it was an advert for an iPad, and Google are pretty bloody clever with their advertising.

I can only speak for my country, but advertising for the nexus 4 is nonexistent here.
Hell, the only nexus ad I've ever seen was for the nexus s a few years ago. On the other hand, there are Samsung and Apple ads multiple times a day.
And I know that this is the case for a lot of countries.

I disagree. I had a g2x and it was awesome except for the software. When is the last time you had a phone with HDMI out??? G2x had it, also was the first device with dual core.

Yeah, but the O2X also doesn't have enough RAM, the proportions are a bit off and the spontaneous shut downs were never fully fixed. I have owned one for the past year and a half and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

"telly" suggest the UK or somewhere there which makes sense as someone else says the "Tube" and such which is London's subway .
In the USA however, there is 0 ads on TV for the Nexus 4, there are some for the Nexus 7 but NEVER has there been one for the Nexus 4 or 10. Not even in the newspaper other than reviews and such mentioning it. Maybe that's why they don't however as they've already got tons of (positive) press here. In general, you advertise to get your name out there and build brand, once you are out there and everyone knows your name you tend to save those ad dollars.

HTC One 5 million sold!

After hearing all the bad news about execs leaving HTC because the companys not doing well etc, etc!
Thought it's time for some good news:
HTC is close to 5 Million units sold (Shipped to carrier's) thats 50% of what Samsung claims.
The fact that HTC is having shortages is proof that those #'s are mostly in consumer's hands rather than retailers.

Difference is, Samsung has a massive product line.
HTC, pretty much all they have is the One, since First was a utter flop (whodathunkit?!)

Also remember the HTC One isn't avalible for Verizon... That is 5 million sales on the "smaller" carriers.

I'm comparing the One to S4 (Apple's to Apple's)! Not whole manufacturer division sales.

...yet.
This is still in the rumor mill. And it really does sound like it's gonna happen. They may not have released it to Verizon right yet because the demand would crush any opportunity of them meeting it. That being said, next month when the component providers kick up their orders, and HTC starts getting more produced, it's going to explode when it's been predicted to be released on Verizon. This will be huge.

If they give Verizon one with an SD slot..
..omg, I'm going to be so pissed. Not only would they be kicking dirt in the face of the other users but completely prove themselves to be liars about the "not enough room" crap.
They would have such a gigantic **** storm. I'm sure they'd get **** if they got a 64GB version though..
...be careful how you announce the Verizon version, HTC. All I'm saying.

S4 also has way more advertising and they bash apple in their ads. HTC just needs to kick up their advertising and promotions like Samsung has.
The s2 is a horrible device and I still get customers coming in asking for it because Samsung is advertising it still. I have to spend extra time to convence the customers that signing a 2 year agreement on the s2 is a terrible idea.

Supply and demand, Verizon should just announce it already. Remember the long lines Apple releases first created. It would be great if an HTC device could drive the same traffic to stores. If Verizon releases and says quantities are limited it very well could cause great success with a limited supply should the current devices in the market on other carriers (like the one I have on Sprint) continue to amaze everyone I show.

No, android fans are smarter than that. There are better ways of getting a bleeding edge device than sleeping on concrete at the stores doorstep.

Does anyone know the current Note 5 sales figures / volume / number?

Does anyone know the current Note 5 sales figures / volume / number?
The closest thing I could find is a comparison of its sales compared to the Note 6+ Edge but no concrete numbers.
I wonder if Samsung is keeping silent on the numbers because sales are disappointing?
If sales were record-breaking, I'm sure they would market it and love to throw it in Apple's face.
I'd like to know, too. the new iPhone sales and availability has been crazy than what I remember with the Note5 after release.

We may never know the real reasons. Officially, it was said Europeans are not that fond of a stylus and they would prefer the Edge+. I do remember, after a rather modest commercial start, the first Note got its success in great part from the European market.
When Apple finally announces a stylus for their iPad after explaining it was useless and after adopting the Note format they said was not a niche, I simply don't understand the strategy of Samsung.
However, rumors meet for an European version very soon.

As a European resident i'd find it more likely we don't want to be fooled be Samsung in giving us an inferior Note.
Just look at the previous iterations. Especially the 1, 2 and 3. They were by FAR the best/fastest/most loaded smartphones out at the time.
The current Note 5 is just an S6 edge plus with a pen (and acompaniing apps).
And im (as a note fan) completly disgusted by this...
Obviously if you don't like the note 5, then don't buy it. No need to be 'disgusted'.
It is just a phone...

As some one who actually owns the phone, it's night and day faster than my Note 4.
The fact the edge plus and note 5 are very similar disgusts you? I need your life if that's all it takes to disgust you.
Some of you guys need to think more like consumers and less like scorned fanboys expecting special treatment because once you defended the honor of TouchWiz in a comment thread of and apple product.
Also how is Samsung trying to be like apple?
There was mention that sales were hurting because they opted to not offer the note 5 in Europe. What is being ignored is while they are missing out on sales in Europe, they are also not paying to manufacture, advertise, and ship to Europe. So looking at units sold compared to last year and not actually looking at the bottom line is kind of short sighted and looks to be bias confirmation for some people.
Not saying sales will be better but for the sake of discussion look at the whole picture.

Wow, you make assumptions like you're a pro. Too bad they're wrong.
It's disgusting that their flagship line of products are now the same as the mass-consumer product.
But i understand if you don't get it tho. Understanding what people mean can be hard sometimes.

Lol so you are telling me that the Galaxy S6 isn't a flagship but a "mass-consumer product"? And it disgusts you that they used the same internals in the Note. LOL here we go..
First, before the Note Series existed, the S series was and is the defacto "flagship for Samsung". Keep in mind the Note started as a very niche product never intended to reach the number of sales that their flagship S Series did.
Do yourself a favor and search "Samsung flag ship" in google.. better yet let me do it for you:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Samsung+Flag+Ship
Please tell me what device occupies the majority of those results. I know this is simple but Im sure its more logic than you put into your response as an over privileged consumer elitist that can't be bothered with less than "flagship" quality..
Now that we have defined loosely what a "flagship" device is lets look at your reason for disgust. You're mad because a publicly traded company decided to save some money by not designing a whole new chipset and used one that exists and works. Not to mention that same disgustingly mediocre chip set is night and day faster than the last Note and killing it with a smaller battery.. Everything is faster, every, thing.. Some people will never be happy and swear the internet was created to gripe about the smallest things..
Also yes it is very hard to understand someone that attempts to articulate their confirmatory bias with ambiguous hype terms like "flagship" and "mass-consumer product". The hilarious thing is you think those two terms are not homogeneous in this use case.. :good:

That's a good point indeed. May be they should save even more bucks by not paying to manufacture, advertise, and ship to the whole world.
I love music and books with a long commute to and from work when I want media on my phone.
I could live with a fixed battery but microSD is a must. I know other real users in a similar situation and it is with sadness that the Samsung phones can no longer meet my needs.
At the launch event a statement was made that Samsung listened to their users....... I have to question that statement.
I hope the next phones reintroduce SD support if I can wait that long........

The point is that people take Pictures and Videos. Over time, that takes up more and more storage, especially with quality and megapixels going up.
I have 60gb just in pictures and videos from the past 4+years. Just because people get new phones every 2 years doesn't mean they delete their old photo albums and start fresh. All those old memories pile up..
32gb on a phone isn't going to cut it. And I don't want to delete my old memories or upload them to the cloud and have to pay a monthly fee just to access them when I can buy a 128gb micro SD card for $45. Plus, I don't have to worry about having a solid LTE Signal. Plus, I can access a memory card in places where I get no service at all, like on a cruise ship or in a foreign country.
I need a swappable battery. I'm at Disney World and almost every here is walking around with their phones shackled to an external battery charger. It's so much easier to just carry a thin spare. It takes <30 seconds to swap and go from 0% to 100%.
Ok. You need those things, so you will need to buy a different phone...
Not everyone has the same needs, and samsung isn't designing the phone to meet everyone's needs - they are designing it to meet what they think the majority needs are and will sell.
It ok get a different phone. That's why they make different phones...
Is like being mad that you can only fit 5 people in a sedan, because got need to fit 7...
