Think we'll see any of this unlocking love? - Motorola Atrix HD

I'm hopeful, especially since we don't have root yet... Could help speed up the process if we get the tool as the Photon Q goes live...

Another vague promise by Motorola.
"Soon" for them is 3-6 months.
If they DO release an unlocker it will most defiantly be a multi device. Of all the users who've complained a good share of them are Atrix/Atrix4g/Atrix2 owners.
I bet we see this after ICS finishes being rolled out on the devices they want before proceeding with a Bootloader unlock.
So maybe in Nov/December.

Motorola ready to make sweet love to Android ROM devs and rooters?

This is taken from engadget.com
HTC is legendary for its tacit support of the Android ROM cooking community. Motorola... not so much, thanks in large part to the company's policy of locking down the bootloader as a means to prevent unapproved software from running on its Droid handsets. An annoyance recently exacperated by a moderator of Moto's YouTube channel who suggested that customers looking to install custom ROMs should "buy elsewhere." Ouch. The resulting public relations kerfuffle then prompted Motorola to publish a clarification to its bootloader policy on Facebook:
We apologize for the feedback we provided regarding our bootloader policy. The response does not reflect the views of Motorola. We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability.
Obviously, we'll have wait for said details to get official before calling this a shift in strategy. It's certainly an improvement over Moto's previous approach of lawyering-up with cease and desist orders. Perhaps Motorola is taking a cue from Microsoft who seems to have recently discovered that it's better to embrace than to annoy a motivated hacking community -- customers who tend to be a company's most dedicated fans and evangelists.
Good news?

its a maybe. maybe they will launch our froyo locked, maybe it'll be open. we never know.
i just read this also. this could be great news or another terrible taunt whih leads to nothing.
im not gonna get my hopes up just yet.

Sounds like a PR stunt to quell the immediate situation before waiting for it to blow over.

I dont believe in manufaturer, i believe in XDA dev's..... this a "cold water" not a hope for us.
I hope this isn't just some PR bull and moto actually enables us to load custom kernels.
That press release says nothing about unlocking the bootloader, only that they will help devs which could mean anything!

LMFAO!!!
i dnt believe motorolsh!t will do that(unlocking the bootloader)
I so love my new HTC Desire! couldnt stand this situation anymore....! sorry guys...
It is just the usual PR crap which companies like them give when they screw up on the social networking front. The "..buy elsewhere.." was just a such screw up. A Royal one I would say!
They are now trying to calm down the situation by giving us this crap..
I think it's just a excuse about the bad comments in youtube video, nothing more than that.

That seems most likely but perhaps the fallout and bad press from that will push them to do what they should have done long ago, free the bootloader in some form so we can get custom ROMs on it.

Yes, I really want to see this happening, but I don't have any hope about Motorola opening the bootloader.
If they do, ok, excelent news to the community, to all developers that will make even better ROMs and for all of us that have a Motorola phone. We can see the quality of alternative ROMs for Motorola Milestone today as example. It's obvious that the only limitation is the bootloader, so the quality can be massively improved if we can change and optimize the kernel.
But I think all people here are already tired from Motorola's position about his costumers: Censorship on comments (youtube and motorola forums), censorship on criticism (even the very good ones, Motorola does not seem to care about the opinion of his costumers), cease and desist in community cases like the ROM of Droid X and sites with roms (that its very stupid IMHO)... and the list goes on...
By the way, my only hope is, if that happens and I have not exchanged my phone yet, good.. I'll make good use of it. But honestly? I have now my last phone from Motorola.
Am I missing something? Forgive my ignorance, but what is "locked up" about the bootloader? I'm running CM6 along with the overclocked CM6 kernel, and there are tons of other custom ROMs out for the Droid as it stands. What is restricted by Motorola?

Milestone users cannot use custom kernels. All the AOSP ROMs still have to use the SAME kernel, supplied by Mot. They lock it to the bootloader. This means problems trying to compile modules and customer kernels and no way to patch bugs.
It is much more work for devs to get stuff done for the milestone than other phone (htc comes to mind).
Examples of issues: battery life, phone sleeping, waiting for compatible kernel or hack for new android versions, swap support, vpn support, other filesystem support... the list goes on.
But you allowed to be happy with your phone. Not everybody needs these things...

He has a very good point. Where other android device builders seem to be promoting development (Huawei excluded, theyre miser's just like Motorola), this company seems to be more prominent on the restriction of development on their devices.
One very good reason for this is that Motorola has been such a huge phone developer for such a long time, that they have probably let it go to their head. Now instead of saying "our consumers said they need this", they're sayin "we think they really only need this." I've used Motorola phones for about 8 years now, and I would DEFINITELY say someone forgot that their customers put them where their at.
I agree. Someone needs to get out there and give them a taste of Good Customer Service. I dont think restricting dev's is a great marketing idea, or revenue booster anyways. BUt then again, to each, his own.
This is PR.Nothing more.
Know motorola they do not update РСТ(Russian legal)Milestone, they do not
need to unlock this crap bootloader.

Thanks Designgears and youareme7 and others that assisted in this endeavor I wasn't made aware of.
It has been a refreshing experience dealing with XDA and their Devs. I only hope future contributers are lucky enough to encounter someone as genuine and intelligent as Designgears. This interwebz would be a better place for it. Look forward to getting more phones for some rooting fun with ya'll!
Also A VERY SPECIAL THANKS to those who've donated to me and others here. What may be a small token of your appreciation speaks volumes to the type of community members we have here! And receiving money is never a bad thing!
Well that was anti-climatic. lol
So what's next on your plate? Encrypted bootloader by Sunday? (I know it might not be encrypted, just making a point.)
No joke the NSA couldn't crack the boot loader.
Grats Hope further development will come! and no Problems will arise.

As always, nicely done DG. +100 online respect points.

Speaking of the bootloader, DG, will you and Getaphixx be able to put your heads together and find out if the bootloader is locked, or will you actually need to have one in hand to play with before you can check.
Does this mean Froyo built-in wireless tethering can be enabled? And junk apps can be removed? I don't have any experience with Moto so I am not sure if an unlocked boot loader is required for those.

Im amazed that they have already got root for this! I really cant wait to see what gets cooked up for the Atrix in the coming weeks im super excited!
What method was used for root...rageagainsthecage?
I had faith presale... lol I knew this thing was going to have everyone on here's attention.
I will transfer funds to my paypal and go 50ea. as well. ROCK ON GUYS!
Can anyone quickly advise if it would be feasible (if the bootloader is locked) to build a distributed computing XDA app so all us non-chefs could help out in that way?
Make that 75ea. I'm so excited. lol. (bank trans takes 3-5 days so prob end of next week).
I'm confused as to why no one knows if the boot loader is locked or not if there's a rooted one in the wild? please be gentle I'm noob-ish, I've been installing custom roms for years but I read what I need to, in order to get that phone done how I want it then usually drop out again so I'm not very familiar with all the processes going on behind the curtain.

Just do a search for "Is it rooted yet?" and "Will our bootloader ever be unlocked???" and it should take you right to the forum.
I just picked one up.
I really don't feel at home here in "General Discussion" begging for root access, and thus strongly support the creation of a forum as well. I need to be amongst my people, so that we can all be upset together about not having root access to our day old phones yet. I really need an avenue to start a new thread with a title like "How long do you think it will take?" or "Why don't 2.3.5 exploits work on 2.3.6?"
In the meantime, I think I'm going to duct tape this thing to the back of my Galaxy Nexus and create the ultimate QWERTY slider phone.
(In all seriousness, +1 on a Droid4 forum )
You know there's going to be one eventually, just be patient.
Going from the original droid to this is incredible. Well worth the wait!! Completely different phone and I love it! Eagerly awaiting a nice present in the form of a Droid 4 forum
In the meanwhile, you could go to droidforums
.
I was wondering if you mind to search before posting.....

why the lack of development?

Hello, I was deciding between the sensation 4g and the samsung galaxy s2 and stumbled upon this phone, and find it super intriguing and I'm now leaning more towards this phone the Vivid. but was just wondering why the lack of development. is it because it's new and devs haven't had time, or hardware limitations or some other factors. would like to pick up this phone, but would love to see more choices in terms of roms.
thanks. was just curious.
It's because some people in this forum no nothing of respect or gratitude.
Locked Bootloader for many months. Only method is via HTC dev site.
No S-OFF options as of yet
As of recently the few Devs that we have had, have been disrespected and chased off. This is something we are obviously trying to change
Drew
This phone is a very capable phone, no real hardware limitations. The stock rom leave a lot to be desired and IMO really holds the phone back. As for the lack of development, we only had a handful of devs, and most of them have left due to hurt feelings. I wont go into the details, just skim through some of the closed threads in the general and dev sections. If you get a vivid and want to flash a custom rom, our devs are still out there, you just have to look outside of xda.

it's kind of like the amaze then right? where it doesn't have any s-off option. i guess the locked bootloader held it back a bit.
anyway, thanks guys for the explanation. yeah i found pirateghost's site and downloaded his rom.
and yeah, read some of the posts regarding devs leaving. hopefully those devs come back and also some more come onboard.
They are not coming back. Wild Child runs his own site and PirateGhost moved on to another website. That way they can control the kind of people that can post.

Petition about possibility to unlock bootloader in G Flex

Hello everybody!
I'm a LG G2 user, but i'm trying to unite all dissatisfied LG users to sign up to my petition, for more informations check my G2 thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/petition-possibility-to-unlock-t2832013) or just read the quote from it:
Hello!
I don't know, maybe someone remembers me from P880 forum
Whatever - in that time the 4X HD had locked bootloader which no one was able to unlock it, so I decided to make a petition about it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852721). We succeed and we could unlock the bootloader via fastboot oem unlock in Jelly Bean update.
Now LG did it again, their G2 and G3 flagships as well as some other devices are locked as hell again. I decided today to reopen my petition and share this message to You guys so maybe we could get the unlockable bootloader again, or at least a way to unlock it like it is for example HTC phones.
Here's the link to the petition:
http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
Let's have at least some hope for it, so we could get easier development and also G3 development could rise.
My reopened petition has 4031 supporters (for now) so it should be a little visible

(to moderators: yes, it's my copy/paste i make on few LG phones' sections, I don't spam, I just share the message to LG users and want to do something for community as I did in the past)
EDIT: I'm posting in G3's petition thread to prevent (my) spam, also G3 community is the most active, so that's why I decided to keep posting and updating there:

Good idea, but these never work. I've seen a bunch of petitions against Samsung with thousands of signatures just get ignored. By the way I will sign it just to support this though

I saw the same thing on the SG4. And on the Moto RAZR HD maxx , Moto RAZR maxx. Not to be discouraging but in these days and times with so many people learning to mod and how to take phones to other carriers , and all the simple one click root / unlock / recovery methods out there its becoming so easy for almost anyone to do what we used to have to do with cmd prompt adb and making boo table disc of Linux just to root or install whatever. These carriers and manufacturers are just safe guarding against warranty claims and losing a subsidized phone to another ..... I understand .... Do I think its right ...HELL NO My phone I paid for it don't tell me how to use it. But.....my phone I paid for it and would I want my 10 year old son to be able to do this stuff without the knowledge of how ? Nope Cuz in the end when he bricks it and I need him to have a phone when he goes off around the neighborhood or stays at a friends then guess what I gotta eat the cost. So I believe I like the idea that he can't mess it up if its not unlocked or rooted. But that should also be left up to the purchaser of the device.
I signed it, but I dont expect anything to become of it.
Signed. Good luck
