PSA: Shattered Screen and repair experience (conclusion update 12/26/2012) - Nexus 4 General

My girlfriend dropped my phone on a chattahoochee walkway. The phone landed on the top left corner, shattering the screen near the point of impact and created cracks across the rest of the screen. The screen still comes on, but is no longer touch sensitive (broke the digitizer).
I searched ebay for replacement parts and found the screen/digitizer for about $125 and the screen/digitizer/frame for about $220. Before making a move on the replacement parts, I decided I should find out what LG could do for me. I called their support line and they said the repair will take 5 - 7 business days and will cost between $40 and $100 dollars (once they receive the phone they are going to call me with the final repair cost).
I sent the phone to LG for for repair today. I'll update this thread with how the process goes.
I only had the phone for a few days! Moral of the story: don't let your girlfriend use your phone unless she is standing on a mattress or you have a case/bumper :crying: Back to the mytouch 3g I go.

Thats actually a great price if the most you have to pay is $100 for a new screen.

any pics of the girl who dropped it? i kid lol.
major bummer tho, thats why i got my gf a nexus of her own. noone touches my phone lol

If the final charge for the repair comes out to be $100 or less I will be pleasantly amazed!
Did you try calling Google first? I had this happen to my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus (both purchased directly from Google) and they sent a replacement phone for ~$150. I've read that they have the same damage replacement for the N4 for $160 (I'll try and find a link).
I'd rather pay $160 for a replacement than $100 for a repair, but I suppose that's a different topic all together.
Anyway, I hope you get your screen repaired for $40. That would be awesome.

Better get a BJ and a steak.
I would be miffed!

I just got off the phone with LG as well .. fresh RA number in hand to send back my wife phone. She claims she didn't drop it and I don't see a scratch anywhere.. its still got the plastic on the screen I told her to leave it on until the screen protector came in. They gave me the same price as the original poster $40-100.
I do have one question.. the digitizer is broken. I want to factory reset but I can't get into the stock recovery, the phone just says No command. I didn't want to unlock the the boot loader before sending it back, with my luck they would try to screw me because it had been altered.
Is there a fastboot command to factory reset? I'll follow-up with the result from LG if anyone is interested.

Boot into the Bootloader and run
Code:
fastboot -w
That will do a factory reset, though you may have to unlock the bootloader to run that command (I'm not sure, I always have it unlocked for the most part)
You can always unlock and then re-lock the bootloader after wiping as well.

I did have to lock and re-lock to wipe but it did the trick. Thanks!

If it only costs $100 to replace a shattered front screen, I'm canceling my SquareTrade warranty right now.

NOOOO! screen broke.. = (

i took my phone out of my pocket today and the screen was white with a big line going from the bottom right to mid left. i hadnt done anything at all, i hadnt hit it or anything, im not entirely sure how this could have happened, but 1 week ago i dropped it about 1 foot to the pavement, and it hit one of the corners. i think this may have something to do with it...when it fell it might have created a small crack that grew and grew, and now got big enough stuff leaked and it broke.
i read on the forum about people who seriously did nothing, they could have just chanrged it and it broke..
this sucks, anyone know where i can get a replacement screen?

Sell your phone on Ebay, Get what you can from it, Buy another TILT. A replacement screen is over 150 i believe.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Original-OE...ryZ41343QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
try that. its about 80 total with shipping included. not as much as 150.
hey guys thanks for the quick replies, but i just got off the phone with a customer support person, they're sending me another tilt for free! then i send my tilt to them.
hopefully ill have it by monday!

Why does that make me nervous? If you talked to warranty repair then you're going to have a big bill next month because they will charge you $450 - $500 once they receive your phone with PHYSICAL DAMAGE.

kyphur, LOL..."Is this AT&T? Yes, well my screen stopped working on my Tilt! Physical damage? Well...I didn't do anything to it...So, No, I don't think there is physical damage...After all, I didn't do anything physical to it, I think it's more like Meta-Physical damage!"

damn now im worried lol. if that was true then theyre basicly taking my broke tilt for free, no exchange deal lol.
well my dad did it with my moms phone for free, but then again there was no physical damage. im just gonna hope for the best
Seriously you'd be better off contacting PocketPC Techs and paying a couple of hundred (or less) to replace the screen.
Even better, if you're comfortable replacing your screen yourself, check eBay I've seen the screen for under $100!
at&t Warranty will consider that screen as "Out of Warranty"...

Once you've sent your broken phone to at&t Warranty you're pretty much done for. When you ordered the replacement they have a script that is read to you. You basically agree that there is no physical damage to the device and if they find physical damage then you agree to be charged full replacement price (read no upgrade discount) which is $450 - $500.
They also would have told you that once they receive your device there is no way that it can be returned to you.
You are basically giving up your Tilt for free and paying even more for a refurbished replacement than they charge in the stores for a brand new one.
I seriously recommend you look at the alternatives I've mentioned as your warranty is already scrapped by the physical damage.
So what Kyphur is saying - DON'T OPEN THE BOX THEY SEND YOU, DON'T SEND THEM YOURS. CALL THEM BACK AND SHIP THEIRS BACK TO THEM UNOPENED!
No no no...Refusal of shipment/freight is always your best bet with any such issue.

Another victim. I had the same thing with my Vario 3. But it happened after 4 days getting the phone :') I sent it back and it costed me 130 euro. I thought it would be like 300 or so. Maybe they won't overcharge you.
Yeah, I second that the best option is to refuse the shipment. That way you won't even have to pay shipping costs for sending it back. I'm also sure warranty will not cover your problem as it can't really be said that it happened because of manufacturing error or out of proper every-day usage. But who knows? I am not AT&T, not even on AT&T

but this broken screen thing is such a common problem... let me quote what i said in another thread:
mikeeey said:
i talked to the guy who sold me my tilt today. I told him about my broken screen, how it just broke for no reason. he told me this is a common problem, and 6 people have came to just him about this problem. he says the crystals in the screen heat up and just break.
well is this is bad. but can it be good? if it is common then perhaps AT&T will recognize this and exchange for a new tilt will not cost what buying a brand new one is. however if they dont recognize this as a common problem then stay away from the Tilt.
if 6 people have came to him about it, how many other people do you think came in and talked to other employees besides him? then how many people do you think went to other AT&T stores in my city about this problem? then add all the stores outside my city, outside my state...we got a LOT of broken tilt screens...

so im hoping htc/at&t will realize many people break their screens.
Yeah... if you get your phone back, or for others, i just want to reiterate that you can get a screen on ebay for $70 or so, and it apparently is very easy to replace (if it's an AT&T Tilt, and not a true Kaiser with the front facing camera). It's a really good deal.
Here's a link to just one of the ebay auctions where you can find a screen for it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-For-HTC-P44...4154123QQihZ020QQcategoryZ41343QQcmdZViewItem
these people will do the whole repair for you for $169:
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main.asp?unit=HTC_Kaiser-971&area=repairs&item=HTC-LCD05
here's someone's opinion on how replacing the screen went for them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1846059#post1846059 (read post #6)
And i think you said that since you didn't *do* anything to it, it's not physical damage...? Yeah, i seriously doubt that. You may have accidentally put it with the screen outward in your pocket once and leaned against something, that's what happened to me, but screens don't just break on their own, and even if somehow it did, AT&T likely won't believe it...

thanks for the links, i may need them. but as i said, the AT&T rep told me 6 people came to him about a broken screen, which some claimed they didnt nothing. and here on the forum someone broke it just charging their phone.
i can assure you it didnt bang against anything. i had it in my pocket during class. i looked at my phone before class and it was fine, then in the middle of class i looked and it was broken. all i did was sit the whole time, never moved.

Why would sony send me 2 packages?

I sent my x1i for repeair (keyboard failure)
they said they can't fix it and dont have x1i anymore so im getting x1a (xia) seems more expensive and it supports t mobile 3g in us? so I checked UPS tracking it has 2 packages with 2 tracking numbers both are 1 lb
are they sending me my broken one the one with keyboard failure.. otherwise it works and the new x1a?
what you think guys ? Im getting it either tomorrow or wednesday since sometimes UPS site says Scheduled Delivery for certain day but sometimes you can get it faster.
thx
well wait and see if you get 2 and then why not try to repair the one yourself or sell it cheap to someone who can
Did anyone else sent their Xperia to Indiana ? To 2000 South Liberty Drive?
If anyone can you tell me if you got 2 packages when you were getting your phone back by any chance?

I have, and they replaced my x1i without my consent. Actually, they on 4 separate occasions told me yes we have X1i's in stock and will be sending you out one. and this was after I had to send my phone in 4 different times because the repair center damaged it several times.. basically what I'm saying is.. be happy they are sending you anything at all haha.
but as for the two box thing, that sounds really strange and I'm crossing my fingers for you that they sent you out your old one and your new one.

then I can scroll down and see both shipments tracking numbers.

I got mine back yesterday. Only one little package with a replacement phone. Only extra item I received was a stylus.

PTS replaced my X1a and I received my replacement yesterday. I sent in only the phone, no back cover, no battery, no SIM, no memory card and no stylus.
I guess they decided to compensate my 5+ weeks wait with a free stylus and sent a stylus along with the replacement phone. Nothing else. You should received a little box just about enough to hold nothing but the phone.
Yo Patt2k,
How long did you have your Xperia in the repair center? I sent mine to Indiana sometime around the 16th of July, they received it the 22nd and it has been in repair for approximately 15 business days today. They approximated that it I "should receive" my phone in 7 to 10 business days, which is a total farce.
Another question is in regards to your X1i, Sony Ericsson America didn't care you had an international version? Did they say anything because I thought the X1i didn't come with a US warranty.
Thanks!

They had no problem with x1i version. And I sent on July 21 St it got delivered on 22ND with USPS 1 Day Shipping cost me 20$.
And 4 Days Ago It's been shipped. But I do not think they would put another box just for the stylus. And both packages have same weight so this is why I am really excited. And about 30 min ago I got a automated call from ups saying that there is 2 packages for delivery for tomorrow. So yea it's been long wait I will let you guys know tomorrow asap with PICS! what I got in 2 packages
Seems like they dont care which version you got. I got a better deal x1a is more expensive

my first repair was from a crack, then they scratched the keyboard up during the repair.. then I sent it in and got the front cover replaced(the CSR screwed up and wrote in the wrong thing even though I named off the keys that were scratched and attached a long note to the phone for the repair center) then I sent it back to get the keyboard replaced.. then when I got it back I noticed the screen wasn't put in there right because the top left and right hand corners had pressure marks.. then came the whole yes we just got x1i's in stock we will send you one right away. and I talk to 4 different times 2 different supervisors that all said yes your phone will be replaced with an x1i, not an x1a. a few days later, bam! x1a.
so the x1a has just sat there and I'm still fighting this garbage.
oh but I wanted to ask what was wrong with yours that it needed to get fixed over and over? and happen to remember any supervisors names?

I guess I wasn't the only one with a long wait. The total turnaround time for my phone was 39 days which is well over 10 business days. The SE reps are worthless and the supervisors & managers will assure you that your phone will ship today only for you to find out tomorrow that there is no tracking number and it really hasn't shipped and they will also tell you that they understand your concern which is total BS.
Contact the repair center directly. Call early or be prepared to be on hold. I got better information both times that I called the repair center.
They sent me a replacement phone with date code 09W08. The bar code sticker on the back has 'PTS' printed on it. They kept my old phone and sent me the replacement with nothing but a stylus.
BTW, I sent my phone in because of a crack on the battery bay sidewall.

http://dealers.sonyericsson.rmatrans.com/ or you can use this site to enter the RMA/zip ..the repair center usually takes a day or two to log the tracking number though so by the time its logged in it could be coming the next day.

this site worked I just checked. There is only 1 tracking number in their database. So again really strange UPS has 2 Packages and 2 tracking numbers.
I bet they did not put a STYLUS in a seperate UPS box with seperate tracking number. So again I will let you guys know what happens ! 1 More state to go in UPS destination ^_^

Where did you find the repair center number? I've been calling the 1.877.7XPERIA and the 1.866.766.9374 lines and even chatted with someone on SE Live Chat. All they can say was that my phone is in WIP and they are awaiting parts for my phone. I found out yesterday that those parts won't be arriving until the 21st!!! Today is the 16th business day and 22nd calender day day (not including 5 days for shipping) of waiting for the phone. By the 21st it will be 23rd business days and 31st calender day and doesn't include time it will take for them to fix my phone.
What did SE eventually say when they replaced your phone? Was your phone new or did it look refurbished?
Issue: My phone had a restarting issue, in which every time I tried to go in landscape mode, the phone would restart. Then after an firmware upgrade to R3A, the screen would go black when in landscape mode and the phone would just turn off.
GUESS What guys! I GOT 2x brand new xperias!!!!

EDIT:
I have noticed that there is a missing part on the new bored but I assumed its would be fine as it me be and after market replacement. But with the new bored installed I don't get signal or sound from the rear speaker! It does charge in my computer and from the wall but it's now a bit tedious with no signal and no sound.
Broken port board -
New board -
any advice would be massively grateful

Not very difficult to deduce that you made a mistake when replacing it. No you should follow the video on YouTube for possible repairs - to be honest: I think now would be a good time for a repair center - not ruin more by trying yourself.

Tbh theres n9thing that can go wrong its a simple unscrew of 9 screws to take or the back plastic.
Then 3 screws to take the speaker casing off, then take off the ribon cable and atenna.
Install then new one.
Its £60 at the repair centre as the it was broken because of the previous owners fault and cannot be mended under warrenty.

If there's nothing that can go wrong: why do you have a problem?
Re: need help with signal
Well there shouldn't be anything wrong I should say but it's just a bit weird iv just put in the old chip bored with the broken usb slot and that pics up signal.
Yet the new one charges fines yet doesn't pic up signal

You got a bunk board.
You need to get a new board from a more reputable manufacturer.
---------- Post added at 03:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:49 AM ----------
I think that your replacement is NOT OEM. Look at the labeling.
Mine looks exactly like your. The only thing I've noticed with mine, is although I have a signal, in places where I never dropped before, it drops
out. Does anyone know if the "tape" on the factory one is conductive, and is acting like some sort of passive radiator for the GSM antenna?
It will peel off the old board. I noticed that both my original & replacement (I've since ordered another board from a different vendor) have the
same revision stamps & other info. Both boards appear identical, except for the gray/silver tape. The factory one has it, the replacement
does not.
Well they guy I got it from on eBay told me it was an oem and art but now looking at it its missing a chip as on the oem part there are 3 in a line the new one doesn't have the middle one and yeah it doesn't have the foil on the back either and I think this my be a factor as well
I got the new board for £8.99 as well so I wouldn't have thought it was a genuine oem part.

Iv asked the guy for a refund but now he's started to give weak reply back. He's only selling this board but tbf it is my fault as well as I went on what he said and also he has the oem part photo.
I'm gonna have a look for one on amazon as I never normally use ebay.
This is what his page looked like as I capt it and the oem photo he's using. My bad tho really

Here is a dealer on ebay who does sell exact part with the tape in the back
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-USB-Cha...153?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ac1421059
Now I just came to realize that the 2 usb ports I bought from china don't have the antenna tape in the back, other than that, the part is exactly the same. My replaced part works good, charges the phone and antenna works fine. BUT BUT...Now that the OP mentioned about lack of signal and the other person mentioned about dropped calls; I seem to have the same issue. My signal was weak to begin with in my office now I have almost no signal in my home as well. In order to make calls, I have to be next to a window. I am wondering if the antenna tape in the back really does make the difference in getting good signal and bad. I am not sure as I live in dominican republic and the signal changes from time to time as the cell company turns on a tower and shuts off another one to reduce costs. I wonder if anyone could check the tape in the back to see if its just a plastic take or some sort of metal reflective material? I wonder if I can make something similar to improve my signal. Unfortunately I threw away my original bad part so I can't go back to it to compare the difference in the new and old usb port. So please if you are going to peel off the tape from the back of USB port board of your n7000, take pictures and do list your observation.
Note to the person who says there is a missing chip on the new board::
you had mentioned there was a chip missing on the new board. I saw that AT&T i717 charging port has 3 chips so you may have the wrong usb port to begin with.

The reason iv noticed about the oem bored having three chips is because I took it to a friend at and ex local Sammy repair store. The ones he had in had the exact same tape on the back and the three chips in a row.
If you look at my replacement there isn't any rape and there's only 2 chips. What I'm thinking is that the missing chip must be for sound and the tape on the rear must be fore the antenna? Just a guess. He wants £20 for that chip and tbf I didn't get it because I didn't have the cash on me at that time hence I got the one on eBay.
Regarding your signal, must be due to the network and not down to the board I'm assuming as my note atm has got the new chip in so I can at least charge it without having to take out the battery. When I have the new board in I don't get any signal at all it only shows up as a circle with a link through. So if your picking up signal, sound and can charge you must have the right one I assume?

[Q] Is my nightmare support experience typical?

The HTC One M7 is my third Android smartphone, and as pretty and fast as it is, it is easily the worst phone I've ever owned. I have run into several critical hardware and software problems, and my experiences with the support, and particularly the repair, departments have been abysmal. I was curious whether other people have had these problems.
I was one of the many people with the purple tint. Seeing the threads on here, I opted to grin and bear that situation until some software fix came. I should have sent the phone back immediately for a refund and never looked back.
My second mistake was accepting the 4.06.1540.2 OTA update. That update made it impossible for me to decrypt and boot my encrypted storage. Desperate to restore my month's worth of data, I sent the device into the repair center at my own cost, to repair the camera, and get some kind of fix for the software situation.
Of course, the repair took two weeks, and they casually wiped my storage, so that was a waste. Worse, when sealing my phone back up (from the camera replacement), they made it so my volume rocker would not respond to an "up" press. And for added hell, I found that the 4.06.1540.2 firmware silenced all call audio, making my smartphone a post-phone.
I eventually built up the courage to upgrade to 4.06.1540.3 once that was released, restoring call capability. Months later, as I creeped toward my 1-year warranty limit, I elected to send the phone back to deal with the volume rocker, and a micro-usb slot that had become quite finicky. Third mistake, and by far the biggest.
The repair center was even slower this time, taking over two weeks to make an assessment, and eventually charging me $109 to swap my device because they claimed that superficial damage on a non-intersecting corner of the device "could" have caused my other issues, thus invalidating their warranty obligations. I relented, having spent such a long time without my phone, and got a bright, shiny, new(ish) phone.
Of course, I didn't trust them as far as I could throw them, so I put the new device through their own battery of tests (available from the dialer at *#*#3424#*#*). Unfortunately, what I didn't realize until I took a road trip was that location was only working because of Google's excellent WiFi and mobile network assistance, and that GPS does not work, at all. Since I was unlocked, I took a full backup, and then performed a factory reset in TWRP. Of course, I then realized that the /sdcard/ path is not a separate partition, but a symlink to a /data/ subfolder, and so I lost the backups in the reset. Thanks, TWRP! And, GPS still doesn't work.
I'm now begging support for yet another RMA, and am dreading to hear how much money they will be extorting from me this time around, for a device that was probably sent back for broken GPS by its last owner.
I have spent countless hours on dealing with the flaws of these two M7 phones, particularly haggling with HTC Support, begging them to do what they are legally obligated to do, and reconfiguring the devices after countless factory resets. I bought direct from HTC, and that has not been helpful in the least. Clearly they are more comfortable with the carriers handling customers.
The experience has been bad enough that I am seriously contemplating buying an iPhone next, because these Android manufacturers just don't care about customer support or satisfaction. My last two Androids were not this catastrophically bad, but they were also treated with the utmost indifference by their manufacturers (Motorola and Samsung).
Have you had similar experiences with HTC? How do you handle these problems when they come up? Do I need to hire a lawyer to get a proper repair?

Well, I have only had 1 issue with it- purple tint. Within 5 days, my phone came back repaired. No hassles
I have a perfectly working GPS, volume rockers are perfect, and no issues with the newer firmwares. Looks like you've had an exceptionally bad experience with the phone.

I wonder if you had a better experience because of a different repair center. The one that they have me send things to here in the USA is not actually run by HTC, and they clearly don't give a damn. Did you get the impression that you were sending your phone to HTC itself?

I have had HTC since the Incredible and I have to say I never had any issues with their repair process. I flashed a wrong radio and burned it out on the Inc went back to stock and s-on shipped it to them and they refurbed it within a few hours of it hitting the repair center. My Rezound had a hard brick syndrome (they had an issue of not booting and being stuck in vibrate). They sent me one and had the UPS shipping slip for mine in the box to send them. My One had an odd USB port issue and that was dealt with by Best Buy so I cannot praise HTC on that.

That's pretty amazing. It's like we're dealing with a completely different company. Either way, your stories give me some faint hope that my luck will turn around.
I am sorry that you have had such a bad experience with HTC support. I had the purple tint camera problem and took it to HTC service center for repair. I got it back in less than a week in perfect condition. I guess your service center is simply bad. cant you try another HTC service center ?

Nope, HTC didnt handle my phone. They outsource repairs to other companies. The repair guys whom i sent it to were general tech repair guys. They repaired it for free as i was under HTC's warranty
But i thought HTC did the repairs directly in US. Looks like i was wrong.
Never had issues with HTC UK - my phone managed to fall prey to a hardware failure where the device ends up in a bricked state after its been charged and for some reason turns itself off then won't turn back on again - this issue was often seen in the HOX and is, fortunately, much, much less common now.
Anyway, HTC UK Support were very fast and helpful, all postage was paid for and they didn't charge me a single penny for the repair as my device was in warranty, I was very happy with the service
I had recieved a faulty M7 when I bought it on 06.13. The volume rocker was stuck. It took me a month -and great help form elevate- to get a replacement after a month. There's no HTC support in Turkey. So the technical support (KVK and Teleservice) is terrible. I have purple tint issue and I need to give my phone for repair, but I'll wait for months and I don't want to.
I guess you can say my tint issue is extreme.

I sent my HTC one off for repair when the volume rocker stopped working it took about two weeks came back all was fine but then a couple of months down the line my microphone broke and couldn't be heard while talking so of it went but sent it through phones 4u this time. Ended up getting a replacement handset because old one couldnt be repaired but realised it was damaged on the top right corner so sent it back and waited for a replacement. Got a new handset all wrapped in box been using it ever since but my wife has said that she can't hear me sometimes when in call so could be microphone going again but warranty is up I think and don't really want to send it off for repair all I can say is HTC phones aren't that really well built was thinking of upgrading to m8 but have seen there cameras glass is breaking some coming like that out of the box so no more HTC for me I am afraid. Just to add insult had Cerberus installed on phone that was unrepairable installed it on new one and thought I would see if it worked so went on line tryed all functions but nothing was working then realised an arrow next to HTC one clicked it and noticed two HTC ones there my old phone and new one. To my surprise it had took pictures of someone so phone had been fixed and sold on to someone else which they told me was unrepairable couldn't believe my eyes so repair centre's can't be trusted.

I didn't know that I had a choice of service centers. I've always begun the repair process by getting an RMA from the HTC USA support website / phone line. Is there another way?

I also I'm quite unsatisfied. After upgrading to the latest version a couple of weeks ago, my battery time dropped down from 3 days to 6 hours. Most of the time wifi Bluetooth and Geo localsations are stopped, tht's why it resists for 3 days.
Since the upgrade, with the same config it only resists 6 hours. HTC support has asked for some tests and they concluded the battery was dead, even I explained it can't go from 3 days to 6 hours in 30 minutes they confirmed the first diagnostic.
So I sent the phone to repair shop and had fresh new battery.
You know what!!! It only goes for 6 hours.
I had HTC support again, some more tests their new suggestion is " send your phone again to a repair shop"
HTC phones are great but support horrefull!! !I did had similar experience with HD2 and HD7.

cracked back resolved (uk)

just a quick note to say that after a week away with the sony repair centre in the uk i have got my z3 compact back.
i suffered from the back glass getting a crack from one corner to the opposite one without any bangs or drops.i had the device from new for 6 days.
sony have repaired the device under warranty without cost.
the only cost i had was £8 special delivery with royal mail to send it in.
i know others have reported getting their devices back without the cable and plug they had to send in but this was not the case for me.
just wanted to share my experience if anybody else has this problem, although i think it is fairly rare and hopefully only happens on early models.
cheers

just wanted to share my experience if anybody else has this problem, although i think it is fairly rare and hopefully only happens on early models.
cheers

Hi, my girlfriend has had the same thing happen to her 7 day old Z3 Compact. No signs of any sort of dropping or misuse, just a diagonal crack on the back case has appeared. Can I ask please, as you're in the UK too, how did you go about reporting/sorting this out? Straight to Sony or via your network provider? Did you contact them face-to-face, phone or email?
Any help will be appreciated as I feel a bit guilty by recommending she got this phone and getting her away from her usual iPhone.

hi mate, my phone is a unlocked model that i purchased on my own so i had to deal with sony direct.
i registered a xperia account and linked my phone to it to get the years warranty.then i raised a repair through this.they sent me the details of where to send it freepost. you will need your own packaging they supply nothing, also they suggest just dropping it in the post but i used royal mail special delivery.from then on the whole communication from them was awful.they say you can track the whole process and its updated all the time.this is bull .i had to contact them to get them to even acknowledge they even go my phone.i had no update on the whole process of them looking and repairing the device.it was repaired free of charge and the whole process was 1 week door to door.it came back via royal mail also.i was pleased with this of course but they never followed up with what may have caused the problem to start with.
do you have any ideas?
about 2 days before my crack appeared i shot about 2 mins of 4k video and the device got very warm.it was only put back in my pocket where it would have stayed until cooled.
let me know how your repair goes.
best of luck
I have yet to find out if the warranty will cover this. Surprised me one morning, 1 long diagonal crack on the back of my Z3 Compact.

Oh mate sorry to hear that. Providing there is nothing on it to make it appear it could have been dropped then you'll be fine.

The rear panel of mine cracked from side to side under the Sony logo shortly after filming in 4k (it shut down due to overheating). To be fair, it cracked when I walked into the corner of a table with the phone in my pocket (screen inwards - old habits...). There were other firmware issues as well but the rear panel was the one that caused me most concern as it completely killed any semblance of water-resistance. Sony repaired and returned in about a week at no cost to me other that postage (see below). I would agree that their repair tracking facility is cack - when they sent me an email to say it was on its way back, they sent the wrong tracking code.
Mine is an O2 device but like you it was registered with them and I just raised a ticket online - I also paid for Next Day Special as I wasn't sticking it in the post without insurance. I never sent my charger as that wasn't the issue (and I didn't want to lose it).
