[Q] Larger system font - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I was at Barnes & Noble's a while back looking at the HD+, I asked one of the guys if there was a way to increase the default font size of the interface. He showed me one of the HD's he had behind the counter and it had an extra category in the Settings area. I think it was called Accessibility Options, or something like that. None of the display models had that option. He said he thought it was because the display models were in demo mode. Within Accessibility was a setting to increase fonts sizes. Now that I have an HD, that accessibility category isn't visible under settings. I'm wondering if anyone knows if that option can be enabled somehow; is there a value in one of the system files to turn that on?

To access those hidden accessibility settings, you need to install the Go Read app from the Nook app store. It's free. Then run the app, tap the menu bar, tap "more", and one of the options you have is "accessibility settings" - including a larger system font option..

Nice! It works, thanks.

You're welcome!
I'm surprised that B&N would advertise this accessibility feature and then not have it "standard", so to speak. It took me a while to find out about this app. If there is a setting that can be changed to do the job, I haven't found it yet. But at least this works!

Thanks for this tip. I just added that to my tips thread and gave you credit. Great find.

Well, the sales guys I've dealt with about the Nook HD aren't so well informed. One told me you could edit Word docs with the built in apps! Like I said, the HD he had behind the counter had the Accessibility settings in the actual Settings app, whereas the demo models on the floor didn't, so I'm hoping there's some root-accessible value somewhere. The larger font is really helpful on some apps where there isn't a local setting for text size, like the Wordpress app. The text is a bit tiny for editing.

It's not just you; it's one of the features that isn't here now. Remember this ROM was designed for an eReader (the great thing is, with all the development, it's easy to forget). There are a couple apps in the market that try to replicate copy/paste using OCR, they might be worth trying until we get a custom ROM.
We need a custom rom like yesterday!!

"jaydon34 We need a custom ronn like yesterday!! Sent from my book color using XDA App"
The above was copied and pasted from your post on my NookColor. It turned rom into ronn, but that can easily be corrected.
I got the Copy Paste It app from the market (on mine, I had to check the setting to rotate screen clockwise or it would rotate it). It keeps an option to open it in the notification bar. Click on it when you need it and copy the text you want (it processes it as an image and uses OCR text recognition). There's a trial version of the app.
Now there's no way to paste natively, so you're going to need to be using a keyboard with a paste function. I'm using SlideIT, which has an option to paste on the special characters layout. Press paste and it's there!
Obviously this is clunkier than Android copy/ paste, but it's a working solution while we're on the stock NookColor ROM.

The process took less then 2 minutes from registering to downloading - have it now and about to install.
Looks ok.
I think Thumb Keyboard has a lot more functionality (directional keys, readily accessible punctuations, @ symbol, parentheses, .com key with extras [.net, .org, .etc) when longpressed and all other 'tabbed' symbols just require a longpress, too.
Just MHO.
Here are some screen shots just not a big fan of the full screen text input. Would also like split me keyboard in portrait.

patience grasshopper. they are really fast about it, shouldn't be more than a few minutes. respect developers' wishes. if they wanted it out here they would have posted it here.

It needs some work still, I was on a closed beta (which I think I can admit), and of course, now use the open beta available on the forum.
But despite the issues with sizing and the alternate keys for symbols and stuff, the predictive text is still like the number one need when typing on a tablet, and it is so much more useful than stock. I don't use split mode atm, because of the key sizes, but I'm hoping I'll like that once they get it worked out.

The common theme seems to be the small buttons are an issue. Hopefully they will make th necessary adjustments.
I'm sure they will, it was among the first comments in the closed beta. I'm using standard layout for now.
Also, nobody can deny... SwiftKey's style on the Xoom is freaking awesome.

1200x800 app on GT-P1000

I installed a local news app which is optimised for resolution 1200x800. I was unable to download through Google play due to this but found the apk in a forum. It works sort of well except that the bottom of some articles are cut off. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to overcome this maybe some sort off app that stretches the articles ?
Edit
Got it working perfectly though I used an app called 'blade buddy' which actually had 2 settings which I could change the LCD density. I changed both to 150 and the Age app plus my keyboard works perfectly. I could see one of the density settings changed to 159 so that must be the the one I changed through the LCD resolution app. Thanks for your responses hope these posts help somebody else.
I am on Cyanogen 10 -Jellybean.

Has someone been able to activate multitasking on a rooted kindle fire hd?

I have been searching for about three days and all I could find was people saying that a new one cant. Without having to use a custom rom is it able to add multitasking that amazon removed back on a rooted kindle fire HD?

It depends on what you mean by "multitasking". If you are talking about the ability to switch between apps without losing everything...it already does that. Any time you move away from an app, it goes into suspend mode and is stored in cache. In suspend mode, the app is no longer running code, therefore there is no processing being done on it until it is called back again. It's not really "multitasking" in the truest sense but that's how ICS does it.
On the other hand, if you're talking about the "history" button, that brings up a list with screenshots of your recent apps in their suspended state...the 2G KFs do not have that feature.

Discovered yesterday if you have your phone in a app that you can put in landscape mode if you pull down your quick settings you'll see s finder and quick connect there. Why you can't find them regularly is beyond me. But hope that helps you out. Though just saw you don't seem to have the options period so that is quite odd.
This is what I see on my quick panel.
As you can see, I don't have the S Finder and Quickconnect options.

That's odd as I don't have sbeam, multi window and a Couple other ones in mine. I actually saw someone in another forum who's layout of settings was completely different than mine. I suppose if you really use these features a lot you could try to Odin the original firmware and I'd think it should be there. Seems as this would be the only solution sadly. Though then in that case s beam will be gone along with a couple others. Now I'm kind of upset that I don't have a way to use s beam on my phone it's installed just non existent hah.

S beam was replaced by android Beam and is usuable through aps like Gallery or Es explorer to share with other phones that are NFC capable. This looks like the pull down from an S5 rather than an s6. which is really odd can you take a screenie of your Phone info. and show build number and such.

That I know but android beam sucks and goes through Bluetooth instead of sbeam using WiFi and Bluetooth. And from what I've seen editing the build.prop could enable s finder and quick connect.

Well that is certianly odd. to say the least. its like you have a S5 quick toggle drop..as air guesture and S beam were removed, one because ((S - beam cause Google produced a more universally working version and air gesture was more a battery hog than actually usefull)) But your build props and Device match description though. well quick connect, only usefull if you have a Smart tv and you want to show whats on your phone and google now pretty much can do what S-find does.)) but really other that doing a a full Odin with the stock firmware I don't know what to say.

One of the especially aggravating strategies carriers use is to meddle with the UI. Verizon crippled or removed a number of features on my Note 7. Thus I could not find Samsung Cloud Backup (15GB Free storage), or Quick Connect. I know VZW wants to sell me storage, but why do the care abou Quick Connect? Beats me. However, a user on another forum posted a solution. Download the app QuickShortcutMaker, install, then run. There are three categories. Scroll down ACTIVITIES and you will see Quick Connect ...as well as other missing components. Not all activities can be linked to a shortcut, only the main program. Quick Connect has more than four activities associated with it. The com.samsung.android.qconnect.ui.Main Activity seems to be the one to choose. Tap on it and then you'll see a screen to choose a shortcut, etc. I believe this can also be done with Nova Launcher, but I prefer to keep the original launcher or Google's launcher.
