What do you think of Z's design language ? : Testimonials Please ! - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that Z looks uber cool
Am not talking about the ip57 certification , i care less of it as i don't plan on throwing my phone into water or dust but those rounded edges (not that this is the first device ever to have rounded edges) combined with a never before seen symmetry and thinnes makes it look so slick . The reflective surfaces add to the glory in my view . Crafted to near perfection i must say .
Do you guys feel the same way ? I only hope more products with similar design guidelines get inducted into sony's future line ups (maybe even the handheld ps line up) .
ps : forgot to mention the glass fibre polyamide (?) body - on paper it reads glory gotta get a hands on to feel what its true worth is

the power button is a bold move that I think pays off completely as a design statement.
the understated skeletal frame and featureless glass paneling only enhances the contrast between the body and the power button.
so yes, this phone is sexy as s**t.

emphasise material
i think it emphasized on the material, the phone feels not that plastic any more...
in simple, it is closer to iphone, compare with 2012 xperia phones...

There is a speculation around the web that the iPhone 4 design was copied from Sony, as argued by Samsung and even released pictures of the same when both Apple ans San started the lawsuit last year! Interesting indeed, Sony is the mother of design innovation for all products! Hail Sony

that's what insurances are for
That test heavily depends on how it lands on the surface but lack of mass and metal should help with transferring some of the impact
I've made a post in the SGS2 forum but i've dropped my phone without a case several times already and it took some damage on the casing where it hit the asphalt/concrete surfaces multiple times but no cracked screens yet
that's the whole reason why Samsung choose plastic over metal case
makes it more crash resistant by default, in addition to the gorilla glass
however... there's another truth not many site has reviewed or shown.
the sudden heat/cold change can shatter the gorilla lass on the Galaxy S phones easily
of course that will apply to almost anything else as well.
fun video 10char
absolutely brilliant !
lol! thats whats insurance is for
Yes, because everyone chooses a phone looking at the drop tests. Let's get a Nokia 5210 then
Awesome! I'm always dropping my phone lol
Sandwich of two pieces of glass and a tiny strip of metal isn't my definition of "durable and tough".
Samsung chose plastic over metal because it is just better. I've dropped Omnia 7 (only one of two in Latvia) and the glass shattered, however Galaxy S and Ace are more resistant.

Yeah they are samsung did a great job designing their devices to take a hit. My captivate has fallen down two flights of stairs and all it did was crack the slider where the charger plugs in didn't even scratch the screen.
The old iPhones could take a drop much better than the 4s, I've watched my brother drop his face first a few times, it was the 3gs, and never did more than chip the edge. Then he bought the original iphone 4 and shattered the screen the first week.
Sorry to hear about your omnia, thats a tough break with only 2 in the country.

My Nexus 4 Review after some Weeks of usage

http://smartphoneblogging.com/2013/01/review-nexus-4-hardware-impressions/
This is really a disruptive device if you combine the price tag, hardware power and build quality as well as pure Android at its best. Very impressive demonstration of what Google is capable of, together with a partner like LG. And finally no Pentile Garbage screen!
Its the best Nexus Device ever. Never would have thought to say this about an LG Device.
Nicely written.
I find it interesting that cite these design factors as two of your main highlights on why the Nexus 4 is so special:
"It doesn’t have a curved display this time, but instead an interesting touch where the left and right display edges are wrapped around the corners. This makes touch gestures like scrolling horizontally feel much more natural, when you start at the edges."
and
"I really appreciate the multi color notification light which is positioned beneath the screen. There is an app called color flow which allows you to specify notification colors for each app seperately, this is a great feature to let you know what the context of the notification you just received is without even turning the screen on."
Good to know Samsung's Galaxy S3 design bodes well with LG and Nexus users..
Also funny that you deleted my comment on your blog and I had to post it here.

The S3 has rounded glass on the face? I think the large bezel(on the S3) ruins what the N4 has going for it.
The front camera is 1.3MP not 3.2MP as stated in the review.
Though the review was good, you may want to go back and check for I's that aren't capitalized and so forth. For me at least, it makes the review lose a small amount of credibility. Otherwise, I enjoyed it greatly.

Sorry, maybe I should have said "Samsung's" design, not the S3 then. Because they made the Galaxy Nexus
And the S3 has curved glass on the edges, giving the exact experience when gesturing from the side that he mentioned in the review. Not having it wrap around the entire side was smart IMO as it only makes the phone more fragile.
Point is, two main "wow" factors are actually Samsung designs that have been.. shall we say, "expanded" upon? (to be nice..)
But I don't dislike the Nexus, or his review, I just found it funny that those two points were written as if to insinuate that it was "new" design tech that improved the user experience over existing devices. Whereas I would have said something like, "similar to some of the key design features of the Galaxy line" to give credit where credit is due. I mean he even references the position of the power button which, again.. Samsung..
AW: My Nexus 4 Review after some Weeks of usage
Totally agree with the power button issue. But the multi color notification was already present on the Nexus One. And I don't know if probably some Windows Mobile Device from ages ago had this. So I'm always very careful when claiming that somebody did invent something.
I mentioned the two issues (display and notification light) not because I think its extremely innovative, but because the features are there and it makes sense to mention them.

If anyone wants to claim the idea of the multicolor LED, look toward RIM. The original Blackberry Perl had a multicolor LED behind the trackball. Samsung was still making toy phones back then.
OK I am not saying that Samsung "invented" these things lol
Just that they already have them present in a flagship Android phone that is still on the market right now, and is the most popular Android phone ever, that's all I am saying..
But yes, perhaps RIM had something original and cool back in the day.. they are fighting for their life right now though

Didn't know that. Now let's see how good BB10 is. I have a playbook and I'm waiting for the update...

When are the displays going to improve?

Saw a brand new Z1 and unboxed it instore in phones4u, and the screen was perfect.
So i jumped the gun and ordered one for my wife from phones.co.uk.
Arrived this morning and tested the display, very good looking head on, but viewing angles are horrendous.
Im in two minds about keeping this, my wife probably not going to be bothered about the viewing angles so i may keep it, but this is a serious flaw in an otherwise amazing handset. Not yet checked camera or anything, this is supposed to be a surprise so dont want it to look used!
If I return it, how long should i wait before getting another one in hope of getting a better display?
Also, where is the fanboy that insisted retail units would be fine and crappy screens were restricted to pre production samples?
You bought the device knowing it had bad viewing angles and making a thread about when it is getting better lol
I'm sure you can answer your own question. You're one funny guy.
So you bought it for your wife. But your using it. So let your wife use it and let her decide. Again you bought it for her.

I really don't understand how people can say a screen is bad based on it's viewing angles. I mean, come on! What kind of angles are we talking about? Don't you look at the phone straight on?
I find it useful for me, I don't like people having a peek at what I'm doing... But definitely the screen itself isn't bad, viewing angles are a subjective topic!

I think it's just because this determines the quality of a display in general. Sony is putting low-quality TN matrices into their devices and that's a phenomenon in mobile world today because all the other manufacturers are using more advanced displays in their high-end devices (HTC, Nokia, LG, Apple - IPS, Samsung, Nokia - OLED). It's not good when you tilt the phone 30 degs. and see strong color degradation. It's not that you look at the screen at an angle all the time but even if you look 5% of the time you want the picture to be good. It's hard to spend money on this device knowing it lacks in this important aspect. This is more strange because the older Z Ultra has better display (IPS probably?).
I also understand this may not be a problem for some and I generally find the Z1 very nice device but waiting impatiently for Sony to improve the display tech.

Well if the phone is on a table or you're using the phone while lying on bad (just two examples), naturally the phone won't be dead-on your face.

FYI Sony is not using TN display they are using VA...
I still don't understand people's complain about this viewing angle thing. I have used Samsung, HTC phones and Sony Z1. I have no complaint about it sdisplay. Viewing angle is good, may not be the best but it is quite good. This is waterproof phone, which means they have to use different display that is not used by non-waterproof phone. Some trade-offs have to be made in order to make electronic device waterproof. You can either have the best waterproof phone or best display phone, not both.

Like the display type governs whether or not the phone is waterproof.
Waterproofing is something sony has added to their phone, regardless of display type. And yes, the screens in Sony handsets are poor compared to the competition, but not everyone is bothered by this.
I for one can't stand when black is never black but grey, turning more towards light grey if you just tilt it a few degrees.

I don't see so much this problem, I'm not using my phone as a TV so view angles are important and the screen is super usable, as said before what I like more than anything else is its LUMINOSITY, is the ONLY phone that can beat the iPhone (actually the best one) under the sun. I prefer less view angles and be able to use my phone outside. That without consider that the screen has really nice colors (and realistic)

I`m really thinking about buying one it seems like a great phone!
So Your Gaming Rig has Intel Xeon E5-2620 X4 Physical CPU`s? Right now the going price is like $400 a CPU
Or do you mean my Personal Computer?
if you consider viewing angle an important point, you better start looking at Xperia Z2 instead of Z1
things to watch out for.... the glass scratches easier than you thought, at least in my case
and Z1 still have that plastic anti shatter film on both sides, unlike Z2 which goes naked glass
you'll need a good tempered glass screen guard
Yes its the best phone ive touched !
And yes i was talking about your server no 4 physical cpus (would if could) but i have 2 Intel i7 4960X that costs about 1000 per one and they are oc'd to 4.5Ghz. so atleast same amount of speed... motherboard is EVGA SR-X 270-SE-W888-KR, videocards are Nvidia Titans x2 on SLI mode, 64Gb DDR3 ram, 2 240Gb SSDNow KC300s on RAID1 and some other stuff including self built liquid cooling etc. Case is Corsair Obsidian 900D
So yeah

if you consider viewing angle an important point, you better start looking at Xperia Z2 instead of Z1
things to watch out for.... the glass scratches easier than you thought, at least in my case
and Z1 still have that plastic anti shatter film on both sides, unlike Z2 which goes naked glass
you'll need a good tempered glass screen guard

Not really worried about viewing angles Just seen a few people complain , As long as it looks good to my eye looking directly at it .
I have just Ordered a White Z1 Brand New
Should have it tommrow. I ordered the C6903
You should've gotten the Z2 imo. It's more updated and would more likely get future proofing.

Z2 has its own bugs... like mic is really bad and back glass is loose and lots of software bugs... ofc there is fixes coming but still... $50 more for what ? slightly better camera optimization and smart call handling ?

I don't know. Maybe for the front facing speakers and the IPS display. Which is a big improvement imo because IPS display is just beautiful and since I like to watch movies a lot, the front facing speakers is what I prefer.

Yup, but its not so big of a deal to me, like i said, maybe i got good panel but my Z1 screen is really good... aand the speakers are bit quieter but i dont mind since i dont use them much... smartwatch handles notifications and basicly only thing i need speakers when im with friend and its really enough for that... For me, Z1 does fine, Best phone ive touched !

Furniture grade. Bamboo is technically a grass, but the walnut, ash, and ebony are all sustainably grown hardwoods from North America.

How does the toast custom skin process work. I've designed one online and added it to my cart but afraid to pull the trigger since it's $74. Say I went with the ebony can they do the custom image in ash or can it only be burnt into the ebony? About how long did the whole process take from submitting order to you getting it in your hands. Can a custom cutout be applied to the capacitive buttons of front skin instead of the standard cutout? Also can volume rocker, power, and camera covers be ordered in a contrast wood? TIA

Sorry for the delayed response!
You pretty much have free rein with a custom cover. Just upload an image file of your design and tell us how you'd like it laid out in the instructions. Once received, our custom cover designer will work with you to get your design all dialed in prior to sending back to your production team to be crafted. You can request certain parts or the entire design be etched into / cut from another wood and inlaid into the main cover, however the inlays can cost an additional $5-10 since it's a bit of a process. You can also email our designer a additional images or text and he'll incorporate it into the design. He will continue to send renderings and even switch up the woods until it's to your liking. If it's not coming out how you'd envisioned it, you're welcome to cancel for a full refund at any time prior to approving a rendering. We keep your design on file for your future covers at discounted pricing since it pretty much bypasses the rendering process. You mess up install, we'll craft you a complimentary replacement. If you your device is replaced under warranty, we'll craft you a replacement at half price. Oh and by request, we'll throw in button covers in other woods; just mention it in the instructions. We also offer complimentary replacement buttons.
You will receive the first rendering by the following business day (Monday - Friday) and Rob is quick to respond. With the high volume of orders, we're at about a 1-2 week craft time, but the whole process should be less than 2 weeks. You can get a better idea of our capabilities by checking out our IG: https://www.instagram.com/toastmade/
As for the capacitive button cutouts, I'm not quite sure what you're going for. If you were wanting us to craft the cutouts in another shape, it would cost a little extra, but Rob can work with you on that.
I think that covers everything. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Update
You guys are super nice and patient even with my indecisiveness. Robbie got back to me quick with a revised design and options for ash inlay. I'm waiting on my final rendering with a few touch-ups but I'm sure Robbie will get it done. I will definitely give you guys a good review once I've installed the skin.

Since you see these things everyday in your opinion should I just get the regular etching for Samsung logo or burn it all the way threw and let the silver come threw from my phone. Also thinking about getting the eyes burnt threw also. I'm really making Rob work today lol

I like the idea, but I think I prefer it sans cutouts. It just looks clean, not too much going on, plus the whole back is protected. :good:

Nit sure I understand so you would cut out the logo and leave the eyes alone or just etch the whole design no cutouts?
