System reboots during audio playback - HTC First

I've been experiencing weird issues mostly during Spotify audio streaming as well as during playing local files and a video once. It will play music fine for a couple songs then it will stop all sound yet show that it is still playing. From that point generally if I skip to the next track it will hard reboot. I tried a factory reset already but it hasn't helped. Anyone know my options here? I'd return it but I dropped the phone about a foot yesterday and the glass cracked near the volume buttons, it doesn't go over the screen but it's enough that I couldn't return it now.

My wife was complaining about something similar today, except hers didn't reboot, but she also might not have tried to skip track. Just to mention though, Spotify dropped an updated version to the play store today. Perhaps that might fix your issue?

You're not the only one. A friend dropped his on Saturday and got a crack all the way across the back/home/menu buttons. I thought these things were supposed to have Gorilla Glass on them... Anyways, you could always go to AT&T's website and purchase the insurance since you're still in the 30 day window, for $6.99/mo, and then pay the $125 deductible to get a replacement...

Unfortunately it has happened during a video, during Spotify (multiple versions, found a list of many old APKs on their forum) and also during Pandora so I'm not really sure what to do but wait and hope someone with more knowledge points me in the right direction.

I'll probably just leave it the way it is since it doesn't actually affect the glass. If I ever figure out how to add a warranty I'll probably do it now so I can replace it once I'm fed up with looking at the crack. Thanks for the suggestions!

After you log in to myatt, if you hover over the myatt menu, and then wireless, there's an option about mobile insurance. If you go there, it gives you the option to add insurance to eligible devices.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll take a look when I'm near a PC.

I did a factory reset and installed only Spotify and the reboot occurred in 5 songs and was accompanied by a loud high pitched sound that persisted until it finally rebooted. Looks like I have dud.

Might be worth seeing if you can get it fixed under warranty for that issue Ewen disregarding the damage...

Yeah you're right, I contacted HTC first (haha) to see what they have to say about replacing it even though the glass is cracked. If it ends up being 200+ to get it fixed I don't know what I'll end up doing. Sucks because other than the audio reboots and the crack this phone is my favorite android phone ever and I've had a lot of them.

I haven't had any issues with audio playback. I've spent a bunch of hours on pocket casts listening with no hiccups or issues.

That gives me hope my replacement will be fine. Thanks.

Similarly, I've listened to Pocket Casts and Spotify each for hours on end without issue, so it definitely sounds like an RMA is the best bet. Good luck

Thanks, it's in the box and ready to ship. Hopefully there is some development going on by the time I get a working one back, it kinda surprises me there isn't more interest in this. It's the first Android phone that felt right in my hand, was decently quick, easy to get to stock and had great battery life.

Screen faded colors slowly come back......

I just got my Nexus 7 tablet today and installed an XO screen protector, by the book. It works fine for the longest time no issues. Then all of a sudden as the tablet was locked, I picked up and unlocked it and the screen was faded very badly. Like it was almost white as you can see with the 3 screenshots below that look faded. Then after about 10 minutes the colors come back.
I purchased from Sam's club with the warranty. Should I take it back for an exchange immediately? If I do this I lost the $20 XO Skin cover I now have installed on the device. Some may ask if the screen protector could be causing the fade. I guess it could be but why would it then come back later? Should I just power it down and wait for a day to see if its just an anomaly?
Both Good and Bad pictures attached below, should be fairly obvious which are good and which are bad.
Please HELP.
It's not your screen protector, I bought mine from the Google Play Store and has the same issue... Its very annoying :-S

Thanks for validating that its not the screen protector. I hope soon who knows these screens better than me can explain why its happening. I think I need to take it back and exchange.

Contact XOSkins and see if you can exchange. They may honor the normal warranty exchange of you paying shipping both ways. You send the old one back, they send you a new one.

Thanks a ton. BTW I don't know if you have the gray cover Google was selling with the N7 but it is AWESOME. Very sleek and snug to the device and feels solid for a cover. But no magnet

Any luck?
I have been working on some other things and have now noticed that it takes about 5 minutes for the color to fully restore the color. When I first wake the tablet it is extremely cloudy and washed out to the point the colors are barely visible. Then slowly the colors return over about a 5 minute period.

They do have a warranty for scratched or torn screen protectors. I don't know if they'll cover it if you applied the skin and had to get a warranty replacement for the device. I would Peel it off right before you send the nexus back and check with XO.
Also, someone else found that this may be caused by some special function of the tegra 3 that causes movies to have truer color, yet washes out the screen when done with the video. It might be a software issue.

I tried the "fix". Didn't work. Google didn't even try to get me to troubleshoot. I told them the issue with a pic attached and got the RMA instructions back. They know there's a problem and they are not trying to help anyone fix it.

Umm mine does this.. Noticeably after playing the included transformers video, the screen will be faded for around 10 seconds.
I'm inclined to think it's a Tegra 3 problem. I remember reading about 6 months ago that the upcoming Tegra 3 chip was meant to dynamically adjust the backlight while playing videos, for power saving.
It's probably just this backlight adjustment system glitching up and not knowing what to do after a movie is exited. Doesn't really explain why it's happening for sleep wakes though
Edit:
Managed to find the exact article I read, was longer than 6 months ago lol.
The technology is called DIDIM and Jen-Hsun described how it works. “It’s the ability to per pixel, per frame, per scene to modulate the backlight so quickly that we over a long period of time, reduce the amount of backlight intensity and backlight energy by nearly half. We save as much power in the backlight without changing the visual fidelity at all to save, essentially, the entire power used by our chip.” NVIDIA says your eyes see the same color temperature, so you can’t tell the difference.

3rd defective N7. Dead spots on screen.

This is my 3rd N7. I just got it about 8 hours ago from gamestop. I thought when I started my new replacement up I finally got a defective free device!!! Started playing major mayhem and boy did I figure out quick this replacement was the worst. It would read my finger placement but I would either have to hold it there or swipe. Oh and the keyboard was almost impossible to use. Even moving widgets and apps on home screen was a chore due to it out being able to hold on to my placement. I know I'm not the only one having this issue. You guys think an update would fix this or do I have another deffective device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure, but if it is defective again, I would return it and buy it somewhere else.
Can you try it out with headphones plugged in or while touching the headphone jack? This might be a grounding issue.

I just returned. I usually hate GameStop but they are bring really cool about the n7. They are exchanging it without question. One time they didn't even turn it on lol! But I got my replacement today and so far so good. Hope nothing is wrong with it *knock on wood*
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Third time will be the charm with me, I think. I'll be hopefully getting my third one early next week while I still have time to compare to my first unit. if the third one has issues, then I'll be putting the N7 on the back burner until people are reporting that these common issues are resolved. It's just taking TOO much time and energy to mess with this whole thing.
Gamestop just replacing them right there on the spot?
I made a video of the issue I'm experiencing along with how it behaves when I have the headphones plugged in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG3-vjFYh0Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player

No, you didn't stutter, but you also didn't make much sense. I'd say a person with the time and inclination has no reason not to try to get a defect-free device. There's every reason to believe that at some point the initial manufacturing issues will be worked out, and defect-free Nexus 7's will become available. That should happen sooner rather than later, and so long as Google is willing to keep sending replacements, there's no reason why someone shouldn't keep trying (do note that I, personally, do not have the time or inclination, so I'm stopping at 3).
So, when I say "why," I'm asking: what's your reasoning? Certainly you don't REALLY mean that "God or some other higher power" is actually trying to say something.
Yes GameStop just returned it no questions asked. The only problem was finding the tablets. Only one GameStop in my city had a replacement. This one is perfect EXCEPT the sound. Its cracky and pops. But the m going to hold onto this one because everything else is flawless. Including the lifted screen. I rarely use the internal speaker anyway. It works fine of I dont pump it up a lot. Anyway yes GameStop was badass for once. They didn't even turn it on lol. I could have gutted the CPU.

Kinda makes me wonder if Google, Asus, or retailers are just recycling some of the returns to someone else, hoping they will be fine with whatever defects the person returning couldn't live with. Anyone know if there are any rules at the retail level that prevent this from happening?

[Q] Has anyone gotten complaints about call quality from the person on the other end?

I'm hoping this problem is just one bad handset and not epidemic, but I have been hearing VERY consistently from other people that they are having trouble understanding what I'm saying. It is not location specific, I generally have full or nearly full service, and I can hear them just perfectly. But I have been hearing from many people that I talk to about this problem.
I'm going to exchange the phone and get a replacement, assuming this is just my phone and not an HTC ONE problem. Has anybody else been hearing this? If so I may regretfully end up with an S4 =\
I have been having issues as well. Just tried to exchange for an S4 at sprint store and they wanted $35 dollar re-stocking fee. Going to deal with online/phone people now. My HTC One is dropping calls, calls are not clear, and lower data connection in the same environment than my old EVO Shift. Wanted the phone to work out, just didn't.

Mine is working beautifully call quality is awesome on both ends and data conection was faster here in boston when put up against my buddy's s4 (also sprint) there were some issues with speakers and radios on some of the HTC ones... mostly the first batch that went out to people who pre-ordered, myself included, but so far i'm issue free.
be warry of that s4 you picked up by the way many people have reported display issues... don't worry though I believe they are software side... people reported black bars appearing on the screen when scrolling I'm pretty sure it's a simple software bug.

It wasn't the pinky for me. As I stated in another thread, I think it's something to do with over-aggressive or poorly handled background noise cutting, or a major problem with dynamic range control going from loud to soft etc.
started actually using the phone for phone calls this week..I'm hearing "its hard to hear you" and "you sound far away" more then I've ever heard before...
It's definitely not the point for me. It happens all the time, most of my calls are using a airave so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it.
Anyone know if this is a sprint related issue? Should I be exchanging my phone?

[OFF TOPIC LOUNGE] The Four Galaxies

Here is a place where you can talk about things that aren't specifically about the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4. The rules of etiquette for the xda forums still apply here. People coming from the Samsung Epic 4G Touch section have seen this before. I asked permission from a moderator first and was allowed to start this thread. Thanks Kenny.
A small example to get you started. It doesn't have to be a tip. It can be something that you wondered about our found out but isn't specifically about our phone. You can talk about other things too as long as it doesn't go against the forum's rules.
I have a Sony MW600 Bluetooth adapter. It's like a USB stick but it's a Bluetooth device you can plug headphones into and the device can basically control the phone. I use it with a stereo patch cable going into my car radio's input jack on the front of it. I use it for music and podcasts while driving. I will sometimes keep the phone locked away and charging while playing music. Sometimes I need the phone when I get out of the car. Everyone knows that if you walk away from something Bluetooth, if you get far enough, it will disconnect. When you go back to the car, it won't automatically reconnect. I had the phone in my pocket when I went back to the car. I don't know what made me not do my normal process of reconnecting the Bluetooth device when I got back to the car. I pushed the play button on the BT device, I previously paused the music with the same device, just to see what would happen. The BT beeped unusually, showed a different graphic on the screen, then paired with the handset and started playing music. Some probably know this already but I stumbled across it purely by accident. Now I don't have to go through the BT menu on the phone and reconnect to the dongle every time I get out if the car and return. I don't know how this would work with other devices. Just thought I'd throw this out there.
Anyone ever notice that when you view a picture with a gallery program like quickpic, that sometimes there will be a split second of a different picture before displaying the one you actually took? With me, it was a picture of the floor before the picture of what I actually captured. If you look in a folder view with thumbnails, the floor picture isn't there.
Good thread. While I have nothing to add about QuickPic, I think this thread will be good for those asking "What ROM are you running" and those kind of questions.
I've also been meaning to start a "Facepalm" thread ala E4GT forum, lol!
Can some one tell me definitively that the S4 can record audio while playing audio at the same time? I may need to start a separate thread for this. I know the iPhone can but can any androids?
As far as bluetooth issues goes... I believe my BT Motorola stereo headset reconnects automatically.

I haven't had the need to, but I haven't ran across an app that could do what you're speaking of. I did research it when trying to record sounds from apps that had some form of drm when playing back local music. There were computer work arounds but nothing on the phone level yet. I was told that the existing android framework couldn't do that.

I've read places that android allows this with ice cream forward. But others say it still can't. Not sure what the hold up is and why android would not want to implement this. iPhone has had this for a long time.

I don't know if this behavior can be replicated in the stock gallery. Problem is, ever since I found out about quickpic years ago, I stopped using gallery. I forget when it was but when the gallery started having special effects like the tilting of the thumbnails, that was the last straw. I tried removing the gallery a while back but then found out that it is used, in some form, when attaching pictures to texts.

Here is a couple. Black http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CXN0HIW/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?qid=1371167671&sr=8-11&pi=SL75
And white http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CPWN6J8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1371167614&sr=8-3&pi=SL75

I've heard that, too. I'm not sure what caused my cover to crack, either. Mine happened on the lower right of the cover. I tried to take picks of it, but it's too faint, even with zoom. I know it's there & it bothers me enough to want it replaced. I'll probably buy both versions & see what works best.
If you do get a aluminum cover let us know how it works out. I'm curious to hear more on the signal issues.

If it were me, I'd probably just get another stock battery cover off amazon and get a case that has impact protection on the inside. I forget the name of it but I got a candyshell case with the grips on it. Maybe the cover was defective from the factory? They sell stock OEM non branded battery covers on amazon. I am going to eventually get a couple because I know the snaps wear out through time when you swap batteries.

Blown speakers?

I'm pretty sure my One has blown the top speaker (again). This happened to a previous phone I had and I got it replaced, within the last few months even. Has anyone else had multiple One's blow speakers? Is this a common defect or am I just that unlucky?
I don't even use the speakers very often, so it's not like I've overused them or cranked the music/voice up on it to manage to blow them.
Happened to me twice. Sounds real crackling. Best buy replaced mine without hesitation

Sprint replaced mine once before, and should do so again, I was just curious if it's a common problem with these phones.

I have had mine for a while and have maxed out the volume for a time while listening to music and no issues yet. Not sure if certain types of music or audio boosts on certain tracks may change this. For example, I found a copy of a Lil Wayne cd that I can play on low volume and I can hear the bass boost in the track itself. I can hear the distortion from the low frequency. Fortunately I am not a Lil Wayne fan and will never have need to play it through my phones speakers.
Maybe you came across a track boosted as such and this contributed to the blown speakers? Just a thought .

It's certainly possible, but I so rarely even use the speakers that I doubt it. Usually it's lullabies playing if anything (this thing is great for that when you've got a baby). I didn't notice it until I put my dad on speakerphone Monday morning
I've had 3 different HTC ones get crackly speakers...from what I've read I'm probably in the "work in dusty/metal dust environment" group. Took about 1-2 months from new status to have issue each time...

Ah, maybe that's it. I do work in a machine shop at times during the day and have been known to go home with aluminum shavings in my pockets (ouch). The rest of the environment at work is essentially a clean room, so it's not coming from there.
If the dang phone wasn't such a pain to disassemble we would be painting them at work and I could have just gotten it fixed by one of our techs.
Hasn't happened to mine, regularly (daily) use the phone on 50-100% volume to listen to stuff in the shower while leaving the phone on the sink. I agree with the theory of it probably being some specific type of audio file type (boosted track?) messing with the speakers
They're getting another replacement, but said if I have to get a third phone they'll charge me $25. They never did that when I went through 7 different Evo Shift 4G's!

Yea it sux....it's part of the revised equipment service and repair program...used to be $4/month for me and kept getting replacements no problem whenever I had a problem.... Now they are raising the price on ESRP plans to $5/month and limit to 2-3 replacements per year and then $25 per device...imho it is BS because if device isn't working we the users/subscribers shouldn't be penalized for defective devices...another way to save on losses by Sprint and push towards dealing with manufacturer...which isn't too bad if it's a simple fix and otherwise phone is fine and you have a backup device for duration of repair.

TEP, as far as I know. Like $11/mo I think. It's also an advantage club line, or whatever they're calling employee hosted plans these days
I have had 3 replacments for the blown speaker issue. phone still under warranty so replaced free. now my 4th HTC ONE has the same issue again & the sprint store i previously went to said i have to go to a corporate location cause it an isolated issue so they couldnt do anything. i have yet to go. i think i will go today
My camera decided to stop working (no physical damage). I bought this phone in May 2013 with the $11/month insurance plan. What's the process of replacing it and how much does it cost?

I'm on my 3rd ONE in a few months. Local sprint store (not-corporate) has been extremely cool with getting me replacements. They had to order the first one, but the next one (yesterday) they had a re-furb in stock that they gave to me right on the spot. Barely any questions asked.

Stupid question, what's the difference between corporate and noncorporate stores? How do I tell the difference?

The quickest way to find out is just walk in and ask a worker or go to sprints website and do a search for locations...the non corporate ones will be named like "sprint by wireless company x"....there's corporate, premier sprint (non corporate but only sprint sales), and then the tier 2/3 multi carrier locations that have multiple brands in one location...

So non corporates can give me a refurb if they have it in stock? A month ago I walked into a corporate store and asked to file an insurance claim for another device and they just had me call assurion and talk to them myself.

Non corporates might happen to stock various phones for exchanges, not all...they have different procedures than corporate...at a non corporate store i worked at we had one or two of the common ones in stock for your situation and when you came in we did the exchange through your account and got your device for our stock and we handed you one we had....Hope that makes sense...saves hassle of waiting for the customer to get a device 3 days later...
