Obviously most are aware Google Play have blocked any ad blocking apps but i had an apk. of AdAway from my Galaxy S3 so i installed it on my One but it does not appear to block all ads like it used to even when i manually update it and reboot there's always ads in certain apps, am i using an older version of this apk. or does anyone else have an alternative apk'. of any ad blocking app i could use, or is it something to do with the phone itself?

unless you're running a modified kernel with the protection of /system partitions disabled, your host file gets replaced by default every time you reboot.
I've adblock 2.3 and it works fine, i don't have ads in apps
Which version do you have?
And see if you aren't running a custom kernel with /system partition protection disabled.
Have Trickdroid on my phone so I choose stock kernel as it's the most stable i believe, not ready to flash custom kernel yet as development is still in the early stages, running same version as above stated and not sure it blocks any ads, any other way around this without flashing a custom kernel?

There's a mod that removes the protection from the stock kernel. It's in the development section.

But only on full boot, no problem if you have fast boot enabled... Works fine for me without kernel mod in that basis
Only problem was I needed to install Ad away with titanium backup as it did not show up in the market for some reason

As i mentioned in the OP Google play no longer allow apps like ad away and similar ad blocking apps, ridiculous but what can you do.
I actually don't have fastboot enabled, I'll do that now and try again and report back.

Ok enabling fastboot hasn't made any difference, rebooted and ads are still showing in apps.

Had better luck with adblock plus than adaway, might want to try that instead.
This was one of the first things I installed (all of yesterday, when I got it).
First thing to note is that you don't have to reboot the phone, despite what the app says. Just activate it and go back to Home screen. In fact, a reboot, as noted above, will undo the effects of Ad-away.
I did notice that it seemed to disable itself at one point today, unless my phone rebooted at some point in my pocket without my knowledge, which would be disconcerting.

I just checked the "help" information in my AdAway app, it sets out instructions for a workaround for HTC S-on devices i.e. how to move the hosts file to data and put a symlink in system...

Per post 12 you can currently get AdAway here either directly or by installing F-Droid market (alternative to Play store)

If you're on stock ROM and don't want to use any kernel patch to make your /system partition writable, you can flash this little zip through recovery (e.g. CWM) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327934. Does exactly the same as the app (blocking hosts through system's hosts file) but applied via recovery

Does anyone understand or have any more information about the DRM restrictions if you root your device.
Are the DRM restrictions built into some apps or into Android itself? It would be terrible to pay for content and then to loose access to it, because someone uses some intelligence' by rooting their device.
If I root my Nexus 7, will I be prevented from accessing the material which i've purchased.
Is there a workaround for this ?
I saw a comment from a 'rootKepper' type app which summons this up well :

I've rooted (but still on stock) and not have come across any apps that have restricted my access of using them because I was rooted. If worse comes to worse you can just unroot your device to use the app.
What would be sweet though is if you can sorta "hide" root and then make it only visible for a specific app that you want to use that uses root access.

I've never had the need to "hide" root, but I'm pretty sure that Voodoo OTA Rootkeper offers this exact functionality.

Oh neither have I but now that I am thinking about it, I remember CynogenMod having a feature once upon a time (I havent flashed a rom of theirs in a while so I dont know if they still have it) but they were able to turn root off and on in the settings I guess maybe for situations like this.
Never faced any DRM issue on any unrooted device. Both my Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7 are rooted and never faced any problem. Reason? Because this problem does not exist. I remember Google Play movies used to complain about rooted device and it does not play movie on rooted device but it has changed since version 2.09c and we are on version 2.21 now. Google has officially stopped caring about root and now they rather support the root and hacking.

I rooted just because the process requires you to wipe your device completely (even SD card data). So better do it ASAP then later and fight moving data.
Root is just admin rights with regards to the file system. Having Root access allows you to backup system files (App data) using awesome backup programs like Titanium Backup and DataSync. Having root also allows custom recoveries to be installed with apps like ClockWorkMod and Goo.IM
I think the only thing that you won't be able to do is rent movies with a rooted phone. Doesn't it block you if your rooted?
Also sharp2G, what did you use to change the screen? Trinity app?

This. I've had 5 rooted devices over the course of three years and six Android versions (2.2 to 4.2) and I've only encountered one app that I can remember (Google play movies) that didn't work with root.

Me too. It is awesome work done by the Dev. I can't thank him enough. It was one of major turn offs whenever I use the device. Now it works and looks awesome without much hit to the battery.

Actually. You don't need to be rooted to backup app data anymore.
The latest SDK from Google allows you to use a backup command to backup your app data and settings as well as restore them. No root required. It will even encrypt your backup as well if you want.
I for one am glad to see Google implementing this feature. It's about time.

Just curious as to why root then? I too love stock JB but it feels so weird to me to not be rooted. I feel like stock has everything I need though. Just wondering what things you needed to be root for if your running the stock ROM. I'd be interested!

Titanium Backup, USB OTG, changing to tablet UI, etc.
Root!
Root! It has great expansion options for your tablet. When you root, try using ModaCo's ROM and see how little things change. When you are done using and learn a little more about rooting and the abilities that it enforces you to use, switch over to moles Parandroid ROM. Its great and requires a little bit more expertise in the rooting world, but before you know it you will be an expert!

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Skype did give me some sort of a message about not running on modified versions of android, but it worked anyway. Running stock ROM, trinity kernel in tablet ui.

Wow really, interesting not sure why Barclays online banking should care if your phone is rooted or not, it is no less secure than Windows...
Root doesn't make a phone vulnerable as much as enabling security options like Unkown Sources ticked then blindly installing applications, enabling bluetooth constantly, and now possibilty NFC, and you don't have to be root to do that!!! 1000000 times more likely to get hacked like that.

Incidentally, you can install the Barclays app, then use a good file explorer, locate the su file and hide it. The Barclays app then works as usual

This didn't work on my HTC Sensation - even unrooting completely would not fool the Barclays apps, such as Pingit or Mobile Banking. Maybe it was because I was running a CM10 Kang...

Whoever said Barclays devs had a clue about what they were talking about?
I noticed that when I removed apps on the phone that they would reappear after rebooting, and changes made using the XPosed Framework wouldn't stick all the time. I assumed it has system write protection, and it does.
I noticed in the Original Development section there is a thread for the mod, but there is no download link. I was wondering if anyone had the boot.img necessary to disable the protection. Thanks!

The system write protection cancels out freezing apps upon rebooting the phone. The only ones that stick for me are the ones you can disable in the apps list in settings.

I tried various app, with Titanium backup freezing works, so when I switchoff/on the phone the freezed apps does not show, but not the ads, adfree not working, hosts is blank everytime I switch on the phone....
Once s-off is released system write protection is disabled.

My phone is now S-OFF! Thank you for testing and all the work you've done for the First thus far.
I unlocked my bootloader and installed a custom recovery. Then i intalled the supersu zip file and a custom rom. after that i found supersu and super user on my phone. Is it safe to uninstall one of them?
Yes it's safe to uninstall one of them but if you're not bothered which one you keep then I suggest uninstalling SuperSU.
I say that because I flashed back to a stock ROM a while ago and also flashed the provided rooting tools so that I could keep root access. Once I rebooted to stock, I installed SuperSU from the Play Store and decided to uninstall Superuser as I didn't need both of them on there.
Later that day I found out that I only had partial root access. I could use root apps like ROM Toolbox but I couldn't make any changes to /system.
In the end I reflashed the rooting tools so I could get Superuser back and everything worked perfectly again.
I'm not sure whether it was just a temporary problem with SuperSU or not but as long as you don't mind which you keep, that would be my advice

Haha nor me. See I knew about the write protection on stock kernel right away which is why I figured I'd be fine with faux but it still didn't want to work.
Luckily it all sorted itself out in the end so I'm back using SuperSU again

Just wondering if it was safe to remove the nook apps and replace them with the google play editions? I know you can hide the apps, but I want to remove them because otherwise I get conflicts when updating apps.

Not unless you install my Universal Root rev3 from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. B&N has a scheme where if you remove or change any files in /system it will reset itself on the next boot. My universal root rev3 removes that protection scheme. Then I don't know whether it will function with those apps removed or disabled.

Yes it is fully rooted with your tools. I guess I could try it and then worse case do a factory restore. Also would you know if the Xposed framework would work on the Nook?

The xposed framework itself will install only if you have done the ultimate and hassle-free root for stock ROMs by verygreen. Otherwise your tablet will reset as it is modifying a file on /system. Regarding the modules, most of them will not work on ROMs vastly modified like our stock ROMs. So I recommend you not to try it.
And yes, it is safe to remove the bloat from the stock ROMs using titanium backup.
For me, when I was on stock, xposed framework was pretty useless, because none of the modules I tried worked.
