[Q] Remove system write protection? - HTC First

I noticed that when I removed apps on the phone that they would reappear after rebooting, and changes made using the XPosed Framework wouldn't stick all the time. I assumed it has system write protection, and it does.
I noticed in the Original Development section there is a thread for the mod, but there is no download link. I was wondering if anyone had the boot.img necessary to disable the protection. Thanks!

Why not freezing them?

The system write protection cancels out freezing apps upon rebooting the phone. The only ones that stick for me are the ones you can disable in the apps list in settings.

I tried various app, with Titanium backup freezing works, so when I switchoff/on the phone the freezed apps does not show, but not the ads, adfree not working, hosts is blank everytime I switch on the phone....

Once s-off is released system write protection is disabled.

[Q] freezing apps problem

hi everybody. since when i started using the note i had problems in freezing/defreezing apps. i tried rom toolbox pro, titanium backup, anttek app manager and the last version of sd maid, but the only one that works is the anttek one. i wrote to every developer of each app without receiving any answer. someone of you has some ideas about the reasons of this problem?
What's the problem you're having? When freezing, are they not, or when unfreezing is it causing issues? What apps specifically are you freezing?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
You don't have proper root.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
As stated above you need to be rooted - as for TB: it has (had?) some problems with unfreezing apps, what works for me is Root App Delete - which surprisingly does not delete apps, only renames them to *.bak, to be removed if you want later.
It's not on your list so you could try this one as well.

When i try to freeze apps, the process never end, so i have to end it manually. After that the app results freezed. If i try to defreeze it, the process never end again, so i end it by myself, but after that the apps is always freezed. I tried to wait, but after 20 mins the process was still going.

I have also root app delete, but i would prefer a more specialized app, like rom toolbox or titanium. Anyway, if i recycle an app without deleting it, it is like freezed. I should try this if it is like that. Thanks!

Developer of SD Maid here.
Could you pm me your email adress?
I never received an email from you. I answer every email i get, if i understand it (sometimes the translator can't make sense out of russian emails ).
If you turn on DEBUG output in SD Maids settings and email me (support @ thedarken [dot] eu) an android log, i can work on fixing the issue.

Oops. Sorry my fault. I haven't never email you. I didn't want to lie, so excuse me. But i don't know how to show you the problem, because the program doesn't show any error, it can't simply complete the operation. If you can explain me how to show you the exact problem, i'll do immediately. Thanks alot for your time.

In SDMAID, go to settings, general, turn on "DEBUG" output.
Download an app like "aLogCat", have it record the android log, then start sd maid, reproduce the problem and mail me the log.
Turning DEBUG on will make SD Maid very chatty in the log, giving alot of extra info on what it is doing, which might help me pin down the cause for the problem.
Blimey, personal support from Dev... Will be taking a look at your apps Dark3n ;-)

Having the same problems as @asusgarb
I'm using MyToolbox in MyBackUp Pro. Running Stock deodexed ROM XXLC1 with franco.kernel test version (soon to be renamed v10).
As said earlier, Freeze just stops instead of giving the reboot dialog box. Manual reboot yields frozen app. Unfreeze works the same. Just stops but the app and the device are not locked up. Reboot yields still frozen. Dev has no answer yet.

Try SD Maid, does it have this problem too?
If it does, turn on debug output and get me a log.
Found a solution!
App Quarantine (free @ Play) solved the unfreeze problem for me! It unfreezes all frozen apps and then I refroze the apps I wanted frozen using MyBackUp Pro again.
Here is the developer's blog page with the easy instructions.
http://ramdroid.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/app-quarantine-solves-ebm-policy-issues-on-galaxy-note/
It took a total of 5 minutes to unfreeze and re-freeze using this method. It is similar to the restore all button in Titanium BU as I understand it. All I know is it worked for me!!!
Thanks for the reply Dark3n. I found this solution before I saw your reply.

(Q) Can I use barclays banking once rooted

Just a quick question I'm interested in rooting my phone however Barclays online banking won't open if it installed on a root phone can any one advise me?
Many Thanks
Sent from my C6603 using xda premium
Nope after rooting the app will not work. There's no workarounds either, sorry
It says it's unsecured while rooted... Truth is, it can't be that secure in the first place
Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
Wow really, interesting not sure why Barclays online banking should care if your phone is rooted or not, it is no less secure than Windows...
Root doesn't make a phone vulnerable as much as enabling security options like Unkown Sources ticked then blindly installing applications, enabling bluetooth constantly, and now possibilty NFC, and you don't have to be root to do that!!! 1000000 times more likely to get hacked like that.
Exactly!

This didn't work on my HTC Sensation - even unrooting completely would not fool the Barclays apps, such as Pingit or Mobile Banking. Maybe it was because I was running a CM10 Kang...

Ad Away not blocking ads on HTC One

Obviously most are aware Google Play have blocked any ad blocking apps but i had an apk. of AdAway from my Galaxy S3 so i installed it on my One but it does not appear to block all ads like it used to even when i manually update it and reboot there's always ads in certain apps, am i using an older version of this apk. or does anyone else have an alternative apk'. of any ad blocking app i could use, or is it something to do with the phone itself?
Cheers
unless you're running a modified kernel with the protection of /system partitions disabled, your host file gets replaced by default every time you reboot.
I've adblock 2.3 and it works fine, i don't have ads in apps
Which version do you have?
And see if you aren't running a custom kernel with /system partition protection disabled.
Have Trickdroid on my phone so I choose stock kernel as it's the most stable i believe, not ready to flash custom kernel yet as development is still in the early stages, running same version as above stated and not sure it blocks any ads, any other way around this without flashing a custom kernel?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
There's a mod that removes the protection from the stock kernel. It's in the development section.

But only on full boot, no problem if you have fast boot enabled... Works fine for me without kernel mod in that basis
Only problem was I needed to install Ad away with titanium backup as it did not show up in the market for some reason

As i mentioned in the OP Google play no longer allow apps like ad away and similar ad blocking apps, ridiculous but what can you do.
I actually don't have fastboot enabled, I'll do that now and try again and report back.

Had better luck with adblock plus than adaway, might want to try that instead.
This was one of the first things I installed (all of yesterday, when I got it).
First thing to note is that you don't have to reboot the phone, despite what the app says. Just activate it and go back to Home screen. In fact, a reboot, as noted above, will undo the effects of Ad-away.
I did notice that it seemed to disable itself at one point today, unless my phone rebooted at some point in my pocket without my knowledge, which would be disconcerting.

I just checked the "help" information in my AdAway app, it sets out instructions for a workaround for HTC S-on devices i.e. how to move the hosts file to data and put a symlink in system...
Think this answers the question in the OP
Per post 12 you can currently get AdAway here either directly or by installing F-Droid market (alternative to Play store)

Aye you can grab it here:
https://adblockplus.org/downloads/adblockplusandroid-1.1.2.apk
If you're on stock ROM and don't want to use any kernel patch to make your /system partition writable, you can flash this little zip through recovery (e.g. CWM) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327934. Does exactly the same as the app (blocking hosts through system's hosts file) but applied via recovery

Cleared data for Package Installer, no effect.
Cleared data for a bunch of other apps with no effect other than losing all my ringtones and notification sounds
Unless I can figure out whats stopping the installation of apps from apk's i just might have to factory reset and start again to see which app it is thats causing these issues.
Thanks all for your help so far!
Ok guys thank you to everyone for helping me. I feel so freakin stupid right now... and rightly so.
I realised that "LUX" auto brightness app was the issue. head slap. Didnt even think of it as a screen related app. Another head slap.
I had stupidly deleted all the apps that trigger sleep mode in Lux's settings ... added package installer back to the list and everything works fine now.
Again a huge thank you to you all for helping and a big sorry for my stupidity.

PLEASE HELP. How to PERMANENTLY delete stock apps from device?

Hey everyone.
Sorry if this is an elementary question, but I'm not very experienced yet.
How the bell do I permanently delete a device's stock apps? I have an AT&T HTC One, rooted, and have used ROM Toolbox Pro to delete AT&T's ridiculous apps. And they just appear again.
Any advice? Thanks.

I think this is a 4.4.2 issue. Over here on my Nexus (that I can't wait to get rid of), even with TB uninstalling the apps doesn't do anything. Best option I found was to disable them in the settings.

idk if this will help you but i've noticed that if you update those apps and try to delete it , it'll "delete" but comes back after reboot so don't update any apps you're looking to delete.keep it factory fresh
also since you're rooted try another file explorer that has root..go to the system/app folder and delete and also check data/app folder
