Voice cutting out on other end of call? - Moto X Q&A

Is anyone experiencing this? A significant number of people over on the Android Central forum are experiencing their voices cutting out pretty frequently, especially when there's background noise. To clarify, the people on the other end of the line are saying that the person with Moto X's voice is intermittently dropping out.
Some are speculating that it's a problem with the noise cancelling software.

Yep, same problem here... It's all over the Motorola forums too, but they're talking about the Verizon edition. I told them that it happened on Rogers phones too.

That would suck. Mine's on the way but this would be a deal breaker for me if it's not fixed very soon.

Well, I think it'll be fixed by software at some point, apparently the bug isn't being exhibited when using voip apps (Skype, csipsimple, etc)...

Not having any of those problems

Motorola is aware of the problem and working on a fix:

Hey folks, we're adjusting echo cancellation parameters in the upcoming over-the-air (OTA) maintenance release. I am confirming that this should address the issues we're seeing here. Will post-back with confirmation shortly.

Confirmed. Def an issue for my. The pizza place hung up on me cause they couldn't understand me. 4 bars too

Allow me to be thanked. For cdma versions (VZ and rogers) go to phone then settings and disable voice privacy. First it's BS anyway since cdma to cell is digitized anyway with basic encryption. Second the 48key encryption method I think called is95 umm sucks! It's uses bandwidth on a network that has none and causes breakup and delay. It's an immediate night and day difference.

Thank you for that tip. I was so frustrated with my phone cutting out on the other end I was ready to throw this one in the trash. I exchanged my phone once already because of the call quality and I was on the verge of making the switch to another phone altogether.
Since turning off privacy I no longer have the issue. Thank you!

It doesn't matter because this doesn't fix anything. I'm on Verizon and every phone call I have people complain. I can tell they can't hear me, because I'm asking questions and they just sit there silent. Its really annoying. Especially since I shelled out $705 for a Developer Edition and I can't even use it for its main function.
I really hope Verizon pushes out this update soon.

Mine still does it...
Hey everyone, I know it's been a year since this thread has abruptly stopped (to which I credit an OTA update that fixed the voice cutting in and out issue)...but...I just bought a moto x and my phone is doing it. I have the latest OTA software, stock everything, and I pretty much have to yell for my voice to get above the noise cancellation level to be heard on the other end of the phone call. Interestingly enough, if I speak directly into the mic on the backside of the phone, I come through loud and clear.
I've tried the "voice privacy" setting to no avail. I've tested all (three!) of the mics with the phone's built-in "CQATest" app and can confirm that all three are working. I've spoken with motorola support, cleared my cache, did a full factory reset, and still no dice. Can anyone help?? I hate to send this thing back because I'm almost certain that it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.
Thanks in advance, this is frustrating!! If I don't get replies then I'll start a new thread, seeing as this one is old.
[edit] update: I got a replacement phone and everything works fine. Turns out it was the hardware. I have a suspicion that the used phone I bought had its screen replaced, and it messed up the noise-cancelling features of the mics.

When I'm on a call with 4G LTE enabled, people have told me numerous times they have a hard time hearing me. I hear them fine, but they say I sound muffled. When I disable the 4G they say I sound much louder and clearer. I'm on my 2nd Bionic because of this (3rd one on the way).
Now I leave 4G disabled unless I need to go online. Royal PITA. Has anyone else noticed anything like that?
Well alright then! Ok I guess I have to start asking for a new one now cause I don't have 4g in my sts I never knew about this issue but I noticed this while using 4g over the weekend damn...I wonder if I can complain enough where I can get the prime....

I wonder if we can get more people to test this out. It's a really simple test if folks wouldn't mind trying it out. This test requires you to be in a 4G coverage area.
1) With 4G LTE enabled, call your home or work phone and leave yourself a message...maybe about 20seconds long. If you can't think of enough content to fill up 20seconds, simply read this post aloud as your message.
2) Go to menu, settings, wireless & network settings, mobile networks, network mode, select CDMA only. Again call your home or work phone and leave yourself a message.
3) Check your voicemail and see if you can hear a noticeable difference between the volume and the clarity of the 2 calls.
4) Please post results back in the thread - even if you don't notice a difference. Also it would be preferable to tell us what city you're located in when performing the test.
5) If you do hear that your 4G call sounds less than desirable, please contact Vz and/or Motorola to report the issue.

Well it's true that the 4G connection is only used for data...but that doesn't rule out the possibility that it can cause interference when you're on a call. From my home in Gainesville FL, every call I make with 4G enabled sounds bad to the person I'm calling. When I disable 4G and call back things sound great. FWIW I'm in the office today, located in Tampa FL, and my wife said I sounded fine with 4G enabled. So perhaps it's a geographic issue. Hopefully some other folks will chime in with their experience.
Yea let's see how it goes I really like my bionic and I'm thinking if getting the dock so I plug it in and use it in the field and the new one looking like its going to be light weight with new keyboard but if and when I get 4G and this continues I might just bail on bionic if the issue isn't fixed...not bothering me now cause I don't have 4G coverage but let's see how it goes when I do get coverage

[Q] Has anyone gotten complaints about call quality from the person on the other end?

I'm hoping this problem is just one bad handset and not epidemic, but I have been hearing VERY consistently from other people that they are having trouble understanding what I'm saying. It is not location specific, I generally have full or nearly full service, and I can hear them just perfectly. But I have been hearing from many people that I talk to about this problem.
I'm going to exchange the phone and get a replacement, assuming this is just my phone and not an HTC ONE problem. Has anybody else been hearing this? If so I may regretfully end up with an S4 =\
I have been having issues as well. Just tried to exchange for an S4 at sprint store and they wanted $35 dollar re-stocking fee. Going to deal with online/phone people now. My HTC One is dropping calls, calls are not clear, and lower data connection in the same environment than my old EVO Shift. Wanted the phone to work out, just didn't.

Mine is working beautifully call quality is awesome on both ends and data conection was faster here in boston when put up against my buddy's s4 (also sprint) there were some issues with speakers and radios on some of the HTC ones... mostly the first batch that went out to people who pre-ordered, myself included, but so far i'm issue free.
be warry of that s4 you picked up by the way many people have reported display issues... don't worry though I believe they are software side... people reported black bars appearing on the screen when scrolling I'm pretty sure it's a simple software bug.

It wasn't the pinky for me. As I stated in another thread, I think it's something to do with over-aggressive or poorly handled background noise cutting, or a major problem with dynamic range control going from loud to soft etc.
started actually using the phone for phone calls this week..I'm hearing "its hard to hear you" and "you sound far away" more then I've ever heard before...
It's definitely not the point for me. It happens all the time, most of my calls are using a airave so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it.
Anyone know if this is a sprint related issue? Should I be exchanging my phone?

Reception?

So, one thing that grabbed my interest was the mention of dual antennas, etc for the Moto X. I'm a Verizon customer, and reception in my area is spotty, at best...so I'd put reception as the most important spec I can look for in a phone...but reviewers NEVER speak to reception in their reviews...which I find frustrating.
Has anyone heard anything, or experienced anything, as far as that goes? I have a GS3 right now...and on TW it's ok...but I'd like something more...
Anyway,
Thanks!
damon
Not sure about dual antennas but Motorola has always had better radios than Samsung. One reason I cant wait to get back into a MOTO device.
I always found HTC radios and GPS to be very strong. I wonder how Motorola compares.

I have an HTC ONE S I bought used a few months ago. Last weekend I got the first real test of it's reception when on vacation up North. My girlfriend's Iphone4s and my sisters GS3 are all on the same HSPA network (Telus/Bell). Inside the cottage the Galaxy S3 had absolutely no reception at all at any time. The One S and IP4S were both about equal having times of no service and times of 1-2 bars depending on where we sat the phone. They both went from 3g to H+ back and forth and could both just barely load webpages and facebook and send/receive text messages.
Previously I've had the Desire HD and Nexus One both of which I didn't have a problem with reception. I also tried a Desire Z but sold it, it had horrible reception and I didn't like the keyboard/feel of it.
I've yet to have a Motorola smartphone but hope that will change eventually.
Poor Reception
I have a Moto X on Verizon & also one on AT&T. I have found that both of them do not get very good reception. I live in a high signal area for both Carriers. When I talk on the X people always say they can't hear me good & that I am breaking up. I have not had this problem with other phones in my home area. I love the phone but can not keep it because the reception is sub-par. Motorola phones use to always have good reception but since Google bought the handset division I can only assume they changed something?

Yeah I've noticed that it doesn't detect the SIM right away. My Gnex never had that issue.
So either it's a permanent thing, or new code will fix it.
The radio is awesome... I get two bars of 4g at work and home now where I used to get 0 bars...
The GPS seems good... Locks faster then any phone I've used before.

I live in North NJ and previously had a VZW Galaxy Nexus that would regularly cut out during the same stretch of my daily commute to/from work. It would go to 0 bars of 4G/3G and maybe pickup a little 1X. On my VZW Moto X, I now see 2 bars of 4G over that same stretch. So far, I've noticed better reception.
I can't comment on the GPS just yet as I haven't really user that.
I have had this same problem on att it's something with the mic on the phone because it would work fine on bluetooth and with a headset. I have gotten a replacement phone and have not had the problem since but am watching it closely.

[Q] Moto Voice acting up or the phone?

the phone constantly get battery drain from moto voice and is it normal or?
I keep looking at others posting battery and never seen anyone having issue with the moto voice going anywhere nearby the radar for the battery drain.
I have noticed that google now picks up all the voice recognition over the moto voice, moto voice being very slow to have respond on page(just beep but the screen just turned like 10seconds delay) but i have seen others reporting the similar story so I guess it's just app bugs for now.
Or is my unit seems to be faulty and having issue?

I'm ready to buy the 2nd phone for my own use!

can't hear incoming calls/they hear me, not limited to wifi calling

i saw the thread about callers not being able to hear the OP on wifi calling on his Note4, but my problem is not limited to wifi calling.
i've had my Note4 for about 3 weeks and about 90% of calls i answer, i cannot hear them, but they can hear me. i received my phone with ANJ7 on it and got the OTA ANK4. still had the problem. i cleared the cache and it solved the problem for exactly ONE call. restarting the phone does nothing.
last night, i broke down and rooted and installed Firekat (thanks, Mega!) but i still have this problem. i actually called my Note from my work phone, answered it on speakerphone and watched the timer tick away as the phone is still ringing on my desk phone! that sounds like a network issue to me, but i am probably wrong.
since i cannot find anything else, i've turned off my wifi calling, just in case it's related, but i am not optimistic. i loved my Note 3 and was hoping the 4 would be at least equally awesome. so far, not so much.
Dude, you're not the only one. I was/am experiencing the same issue here in Houston. I called T-Mobile and they told me that they're aware of this issue and until then I should man up and wait for the problem to disappear AUTOMATICALLY.

although the problem was not limited to wifi calling, it seems wifi calling turned on was causing it. i turned it off just for the hell of it and i haven't had a problem since.
This is exactly right, that is what is causing the problem for several people. Having WiFi calling on and placing callls over the network has caused that for several people

i hate to state the obvious, but that's just stupid. i wasn't fond of the feature (using my internet connection, a separate isolated charge, and having it 'count against' my unlimited minutes) but it is what it is. and it's now off.
The problem is voLTE. Its a pretty common issue. Just truth it off in settings and your should be fine.
Does the Wi-Fi calling always sound like the caller is in a portable toilet made of metal? It's G/D awful.
