Ok so I am not a great designer by any means, but I do have a 3D printer and I am willing to donate as much plastic as needed to get something nice going. So here is the deal... I ordered two G2s and now I need stands for them and I figured I would put it to use. I've made simple universal ones to start like the ones below. Please excuse the crappy quality, the camera on my previous phone was horrible. Will be nice to go from 5MP to 13MP
I know a lot of them suck, most of these were within the first week or two of having the printer. I have since learned you NEED a heated bed to do any decent printing with ABS and have upgraded. Anyways, these were just universal ones I could give away when I was done with them. I can also vapor bath them and smooth them out real nice. If you got a drawing lmk, I want to see what we can get going. I'll update soon after I have a bit to play with it.
What program do you use to print them out? Back when I was in school I used solidworks to make some cool stuff with a 3D printer, I wouldn't mind trying to make something and sending you the file to try out.

I was using sketchup for some and tinkercad for the others. I have autocad I just havent had the time to learn it with my new job. Pretty much any program that can output an STL file should be fine. I can do the rest from there. I'll slice it and add support if needed.
Edit: I forgot to say my boss is supposed to get a very expensive 3D printer this xmas too. He was thinking of getting of those Zcorp ones or the UV ones. We need a big platform, like 18x12" or so. I'll most likely have access to it when he gets it. At the very least he will get a makerbot or something close. I'll make good use of it

Awesome, I'm good with sketchup as well! Do you just want a basic stand or do you want me to try to make one that holds it and has slots for aux and charger ports??
Also, I'll make it thick enough to at least support a slim case.

I need to get a tripod mount going first. I use my phone for work a lot and my old tripod mount barely fit my 4" phone lol After that I want to make something like this: Stump Portable stand on Amazon for us. You my friend can add what you wish to the stand, I'll be working with you on details. I'll give you some details on the printer so you can adjust for the extrusion.

I just wanted to let you guys know this is already being printed I was supposed to get my device on Tuesday, but it seems I am on the back order list now and wont receive it until Wednesday-Thursday. Either way, I have already ordered a thick case for my gf here: Case/Stand on Amazon and I want to make one for her too, so hopefully we can get a few of these going. When I confirm they fit I'll put them up on Thingiverse for everyone!
Ok so update guys!! So after about an hour I started noticing some warping in the ABS plastic (which I have the worst problem with) and I ended up switching from the glow in the dark ABS to the silver PLA. The PLA did much better as far as warping but I get a crappier product
In the next post I'll show the model after I clean it up a bit...
Ok so here are some more pictures after I cleaned it up with a dremel. Usually I just hit it with some sandpaper and throw it in the steamer but PLA isn't bothered by acetone like ABS is. I'll try and find a PLA solvent soon and see what I can do with it. I really like printing in ABS but it warps constantly for me even with a heated bed and a almost perfectly leveled bed. Tonight I will try a different one, most likely the round one

Phone is in and it fits GREAT. Now to start tweaking! Thanks to Who Mike D for the design! We will have more up soon, PM either of us for this file. This version doesn't hold the charge cord.... yet. That is next on the list. I will start on that now. I want to make it so you can use the stock cord and just slide it in and glue it in, or possibly just hot glue and some extra space, I'm not sure yet. The simpler the better IMO.
Be cool to have one that can incorporate something like the LG Qi Charger.

Get me the most accurate measurements you can for it, the more accurate the better. It is hard for me to really see it in the pics the angle at which the phone sits. It shouldn't be do hard to set a placeholder for one.

Sorry to go off topic, haha, anyways, my tablet doesn't get hot, I think the best thing for you to do is just add more copper to the existing heat sink, airflow will only drag dust into the tablet.
Just went and grabbed my hefty set of dial calipers! time to start modeling!
And also, i might put a small and thin filter (very small pores) inbetween the case and the fan but i think as long as you dont kick it under the fridge while the fan is on i think it would be all right
in order to hold onto the tablet without copying googles latches..... im afraid to say that
the back will have to come above the edge of the tablet and snap over the top just a little hopefully though. should solve the not level with the bezel screen issue that is stock. win win

anyways i just made a shell of what the case should look like for it to fit inside
now time to add vents and the fan mount area!
Just an update for some people....
a standard rechargeable 9v battery would run the fan for about an hour and a half
if i put 2 in there, it would make it balanced and give about 3 to 3.5 hours of fan life (about what you get with a fully overclocked kernel)
so what will it be, 1 or 2?
if you used non rechargeable 9v's you would get about 5.5 hours of fan life, 2 would get you 11 which would be good
So more development has happened
got the case "complete" afak until i can print a prototype which is a week or so
i know its a bit thick, but what do you want from 2 9v's and a fan?
i hope some of you will get excited about how development is actually happening\

This does look quite nice I do kinda like the ability to use NFC though and have an overall lightweight device, but perhaps something like this would be nice on a stand instead? Then I can put my N7 on the stand, do some benchmarking, games, whatever else I want, and then when I want to travel, I simply take the back off and go back stock.

Honestly? I think you're wasting your time and everyone else's. No-one is going to buy something like that to cool a gadget that doesn't even get hot in a case, which brings up another point, where would you find a case to fit your souped up N7 afterwards?
There has to be a more worthy project for you to spend your time and money on.

A lot of people here flash custom kernels to overclock their CPU to 1.64 GHz. In this instance, the device can get noticeably hotter after heavy usage...so this case will serve a purpose for some. Also, I believe the OP plans on integrating an inbuilt OTG mount, who wouldn't want that?!
Why don't you put a radiator, pump, and reservoir for kicks? A water-cooled tablet would be crazy badass!
Pardon the sarcasm. I believe people will be more interested in a built-in usb hub. Slap in a micro sd card reader in one port and 3 fullsize female usb in the other (for keyboard, mouse, portable drive, sixaxis controller, etc.). No more lack of sd card slot problem. Of course it will need a little tweak by swapping the mount points of the internal and the external sdcards, but it is doable.
If you want, instead of a micro sd, you can go for a multi card reader so the users will have options. Pictures or videos in the storage card can be viewed, edited, saved, or emailed from their dslr's straight to the tablet for example. The possibilities are endless.

we've taken a giant leap in range and set an all out world record for the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0... We even beat the record set by the manufacturer...
Parrot teamed up with Alcatel-Lucent Technologies to create a drone controlled by 4G instead of WiFi and they set a mark of 1000meters...
So I took a long hard look at those numbers and contacted some WiFi experts discussing range and connectivity... Did some new modifications to my drone and tablet and came out on top, beating the Parrot/Alcatel record by roughly 82meters and beating the previous WiFi-only record by over 600meters (set by a consumer flyer in Hong Kong at 470meters)
My reason for posting here is to show the awesome Nexus 7 at it's best... None of this could have been done without the Nexus 7's unique features
Easy to crack open and shut without damage
Easy to tap into Nexus internal WiFi components
Easy to flash new ROM's and kernels to achieve smooth running control software
Perfect size and ample screen quality to fly outdoors and be able to see on screen controls

I know there will be haters for this setup because it ruins the flat back of the tablet making it less compact... but all this stuff just pops right off leaving the back "almost" flat... except for the PS3 controller slot mount at 1/8" thick... plus... I can jack open WiFi signals from over a mile away!!

The external antenna is soldered to the motherboard antenna spring pins and the OEM WiFi antenna has been removed to eliminate interference... yes, I drilled holes in the back cover and even used epoxy and screws to attach the PS3 controller mount... but I have a spare back cover in case I want to return it to stock condition

I really doubt that anyone here will do that. You found a way to make your device fit your needs and this deserves nothing else but admiration. Our devices are tools, not some fashion toys.

I'm curious why you're using narrow-beam ant for your drone. Those panel types usually have a 30-deg beamwidth, and are for point-to-point uses. Actually, a hi-gain omni probably wouldn't work either, since it has a "flat" beamwidth. Maybe something like the below, a 9dBi panel ant w/ 60-deg beamwidth for easy aiming. The compact 5"x5" can be mounted on the tablet with a clip mount.

I guess the answer would have to be trial and error + results...
I've racked up quite a few different antenna styles while experimenting... these are just a few
Omni antennas came first because I had them lying around and they did wonderfully compared to the stock internal antenna... but then I ended up with one of those 5"x 5" patch antennas (center) and saw the advantage of directional (narrow beam , point to point... just point it at the drone) ... so I scrounged around and settled with the 7"x 7" because it gave the best range... to me, 30° beam width is big... by the time you get 100/150 yards away the error cone is huge... pointing my nexus in the general direction of the drone seems to come naturally so it's never an issue
Of course it's not the antenna I use when I'm browsing XDA on WiFi like the post I'm making right now from the little 5dBi omni (second from the right).... small and light and doesn't get in the way...
All comes down to single user preference... would be silly to market something this way because there's particular rules to follow to get the best results with that particular antenna... but it suits my style and requirements the best... I'm even thinking about going up a notch to an 18dBi patch that only has 20° beam width... just to see how far I can actually fly this thing

That was my fear... I went at this with sketchy soldering skills also... but I watched some YouTube videos... and practiced a little and boom... came out just fine

The main antenna bracket is a hacked up Motorola Droid Bionic windshield suction cup mount (car dock) with the suction cup removed, 4 holes drilled for the antenna connection, and some cutting and flattening for the tablet connection with epoxy and small screws...
The battery drain is partly from more aggressive flying and partly because I sped up certain parts of the video edit to keep it more interesting... that was actually a 17 minute flight compressed into 7 minutes of video without dropping any frames... just speeding up the slower moving, boring parts

I could probly pull that off here pretty soon (this weekend?). I have a new SMA connector coming with thicker, low loss, RG174 cable... (the coax i got on there now sucks)... and I'm making a stronger SMA mount... I made the first one kind of like a kickstand to keep the tablet tilted when I set it down, but I keep feeling like I'm gonna break it off sooner or later
So yeah... I'll be sure to take pics... maybe video I guess? (Which would be better?)

Google "ar drone flyaway" before you do that. The folks who make it still haven't figured out that "wifi connection loss" should mean "gentle descent" to the ground. Apparently it means "go off in some wild direction, sometimes gaining great altitudes".

Not a problem for 99.99% of users... when mine loses WiFi connection it stops and locks on a target on the ground and hovers... giving me time to walk closer or aim my antenna better and reconnect... you really don't want it to auto land on a disconnect... what if it's over water or power lines or trees etc... the hover and wait feature works very well... the flyways are usually freezups in the onboard software getting hung up on the last command received ... or navigation board faults
but look at the numbers... with over a million units sold... and doing a YouTube search shows less than 30 flyaway videos... searching the drone forums with thousands of members, shows less than 30 or 40 posts talking about flyaways... and they're all old posts
With my friends and myself as a group we have over a dozen of these things and had one flyaway... Parrot warrantied that and sent a new unit... but that WiFi thing doesn't happen... they always just stop and hover and wait for you

My wife was way harder to deal with when I told her I needed the Nexus 7 more than air
And then she woke up one morning and saw me drilling holes in the cover and just about stabbed me with a back scratcher
But then she saw all the results and comments I get on the drone forums ... and she started thinking it was pretty cool
Then, all excited, she sent me this pic at work and I realized she was totally down with the DroneLife

Making it Flexible is on the roadmap, we are planning on doing it, however, that requires more much testing, and the mechanicals of that are more much complex. we need the initial push to get the necessary funding to get the design FCC approved and compatibility test with as much devices as we can.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't one be able to do that with wired extension leads? I don't know a whole lot but it seems fairly simple to this 16 year old.

No, it won't. It isn't for micro usb port. It works only with Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Thanks, make sure to use your "custom" link to share, we are tracking referral, and if we are funded, the person with more referral will get a Nexus 7 32GB (More details at the website if interested).
We have a very large amount of visitors, many are interested but are holding up. Maybe to see if the project is going to get closer to its goal, or maybe they just want to wait for a more complete, retail ready from. I hope they realized that without the initial push we can't get there. All i can do is support, answer questions and spread the word as much as I can.
We have the Nexus 10 on order already, so we will be testing as soon as we get it. We are also prototyping a Build in storage option (A.K.A Micro USB Flash drive). :good:
So I already planned to do this with a microsd card adapter and an OTG cable for about half the price. That way I can connect a few devices at once too... Any reason I should spring for this instead?

Hey Manaox,
Functional they are the same, depending on the quality of the OTG cable, speed should be the same (there are some cases reported that some really inexpensive OTG cables degrade the speed a bit), if you don't mind the size and having the "cable" hanging around, that is a perfect way to do it. that;s exactly what I did before I decide to design a better solution.
Personally, I hate that "tail" on my device, I rather have something smaller, that I can maybe have on my keyring or in a pocket on my case and i can easily plug and play. But there is nothing wrong with the OTG cable + MicroSD-USB adapter (or Flash drive).

What you really need to work on, besides keeping the size down, is some sort of clamp mechanism, as a strain-relief for the actual USB port (especially the pathetic shallow and sloppy port on the N7). Without that strain relief, expect to see a LOT of complaints about breaking the USB port.
Might also want to consider an "L" shape that runs along the edge rather than straight out. It'll be a bit trickier to manufacture but would make it far less prone to "snapping off" and it'll be less clunky looking if it doesn't protrude out as far.
Finally, if you're making it device specific for the N7, a ribbon cable (or hard cable) that does a 180 to the back would be ideal. The actual reader portion could mount in the middle of the speaker/Asus logo area. A few was to make this mounting work, from velcro to double-sided tape to semi-permanent plates mounted to the back with a clip or magnet, etc.
Actually, the more I think about it, a rigid cable sheath in the shape of a "C" would be ideal, if it was a tight fit (almost a clip) to the chassis. A lot of the torque that would be applied to the USB port would be absorbed/prevented by the reader portion resting snugly on the back.

We don;t want to make a Nexus 7 specific, we want to make it so it will work with as many android devices as possible, with or without a case (which doesn't allow to make flush to the edge)
I made myself one, much cheaper and easier, cost me about £3 total and 10 minutes to solder up.

That will not fit on your Nexus 10, that is NOT a micro USB device...
EDIT: I stand corrected, I can see the MicroUSB on the side, besides the size, it should do the job. for that size of device I would much rather use a OTG cable, but it comes down to preferences

My only part i'm not as accurate on is the radius's seeing as i don't have the tools to more accurately measure it. But for a dock they aren't that important. IF anyone has more accurate info for them i'd love to update the model!

With the arrival of 4.2 from what the forums say, the new kernal now supports the pogo pins on bottom. So i threw together a lil simplistic rough of a dock im thinking of getting printed out. The second pitcure shows the pogo "channel" i modeled in, so that i can wire them in once they come from china I would love your feedback (touchups rounding edges and whatnot havn't been done yet, but any big design flaws or suggestions would be great)

what brand of calipers are you using and are they digital or dial? just curious.
Just out of curiosity what material were you going to be making your dock out of? I was debating with myself on what materials I should use that are easy to manipulate since I do not have access to the likes of wood and/or metals to mould it to the shape I want.
Your model is pretty good but I spotted an error with it.
On your model, the lower part of the bezel is drafted outwards but on my Nexus 7, the lower part is drafted inwards.
If you could add the USB port and 3.5mm socket it would also be even better. )

Lol, just skimming the thread title, I expected something with a maple leaf on it.
Ya I work developing orthopedic implants and at my office we have all sorts of fancy stuff, micrometers, optical comparitors, CMC machines. But thats there, and i am enjoying my weekend. But I bought an average 12" pair of calipers. Ya i actually colaberated a bit with one of my buddies on this to throw together a fast mockup, and the lower bezel was his, easy fix though. And ya i know i'm missing the ports. Two reasons they are there:
1. They would be next to no use trying to get their relative positioning accurate with a pair of calipers, thats a job for better tools i'll have to do later.
2. For my purposes of building a desktop dock, i didn't need anything but the outermost measurements, but once people work out the pogo pins i plan on wiring that into it as well
Also I was just going to put it through a 3d printer we have a the university i go to, and then finish it off with some fine sanding and high gloss black or something. I'll be sure to post the drafts i go through. Any and all constructive critism would be much appreciated, fresh eyes are always apppreciated.
Also I find CAD mockups to be in extremely short supply. I'd love for this to become a thread with some colaboration going on. If you make any improvements to my model, UPLOAD IT!!! Or just any ol thing pertaining to our beautiful device

Ya I was just reading that thread and actually went ahead and bought a 10 pack of those pogo pins from eBay. This is exciting news if we Can get a functional slick dock in the works before Asus releases theirs. Ya ill model in the pogo holes in tomorrow for sure. I myself am working on a dock obviously and once I get it printed out on the 3d printer ill be able to make the fine tunes to things like the pogo pins and other holes that are all the toughest parts to model accurately (as far as true position is conacerned)
Again for all you other drafters post your stuff up, let's get the collaborating going!

Hey, I have had a Galaxy SII for a while now and use it as my main phone but just couldn't bring myself to sell my Sexy Nexy. So, it is still laying around, being used as an MP3 player during the rare occasions I actually go out to exercise. But besides that it is just collecting dust, which I hate. I was wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and thought of a creative way to still use their N1s.
I don't know have VOIP works but maybe something like using their nexus for a phone, or home phone even, only through wifi? Not sure if you have to have a SIM card in for that or not.
Or maybe something more creative? Just seeing what people have done out there.

I am doing the same thing. Also trying to figure out the easiest way to turn Wi-Fi tethering on when I get in the car so the N1 can connect to it and then I can use it for VOIP calls and texts as well as an mp3 player in the car.
Frame that SOB.
It's still great as a spare. Like say when you're out on the beer and don't want to loose your newest love . Unless of course you like to show that one off

Yea mine doubles as a spare. whenever my gf breaks her phone I give her my Sensation and use my N1.
she never understands why I dont just give her the N1. Im just looking for any excuse to play with it again
Im considering selling my sensation and just using the N1 though. Sensation gets like 5 hours of light use, the N1 gets a day and a half of heavy

Can we see a picture? I want to paint mine too. I used to have a Desire and I sanded the paint off and polished it, looked really cool that way.

this is from the day I reassembled it. its looking a little dinged up these days, so Im going to be re-painting soon and Im looking for color suggestions.
I used metal/plastic adhering spray paint and a lot of wet sanding. The battery door isnt perfect but I got another one to try again with. The aluminum part was easy to sand down (dremel) but the plastic is just a little less forgiving so there are some places I bit a little too deep.
but I love it. I occasionally use it as my primary phone and it always turns heads

Ye anot only is it my spare phone, I have 3 housings for it, so I can get one painted and ready while the N1 is still all put together.
Im actually working on a new one right now but Im not sure what colors I want
Please post pictures of the repaint. I'm thinking once I have some extra money, buying a second housing and repainting it and having the local repair shop install it for me. I like the phone enough to hang onto it if I can make it a bit unique. Maybe I should wait until something breaks? AFAIK power button has never been replaced and so far works perfect, going on 3 years old this April. No signs of any other problems so far but who knows? I try to never use the USB port for charging to keep it from wearing out.

Will do. Im trying something a little dfifferent this time so if it sucks I probably will re-paint again before posting so it may be a while. but if this doesnt look terrible I should be done with it soon
I'm not into the bright colors a whole lot, I was considering flat black, or blue or red, but not sure yet. Maybe you could sell me one of your housings? If I try to attempt the work myself I will need to buy another phone to use for a few days while I work on it.

I also want to use my N1 as MP3 player in my car. But I once used a SGS2 as MP3 in my car and the music quality is just so much better. Are there any ROM/Mod/Apps to enhance the music of my N1? Currently using Evervolv 4.2 for my N1(a great ROM btw).

You could try HyperSense Nova, which has some impressive sound codecs:

CM ROMS have DSP Manager for sound effects too. You might wanna check those out. Try VJ's CM 10.1 (4.1.2)
The galaxy s2 has terrible audio quality for music compared to the nexus one and desire. The original galaxy had good sound quality when set up right with voodoo mods. DSP manager as well as power amp are good for sound quality. I use both.
