Android 4.4 KitKat - Raspberry Pi Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since Android 4.4 KitKat can run on only 512 MB of ram, would it be able to run smoothly on our raspi's?

doubt it..... no hw acceleration plus slow cpu.

HW acceleration is not a requirement, also the CPU isn't that slow, it will OC to 900-950 pretty easily. Not saying it wouldn't be difficult but I think it might be possible.

it running or being usable?

Well it running and being usable is always the real question. What's the lowest hardware it able to run on verses being usable for something... I'd be curious to see it attempted at least.

I was wondering this too and checked on the raspberry pi forum, the problem mostly seems to be that the hardware is proprietary to Broadcom and they would have to write drivers for the low level hardware stuff and get graphics working smoothly. But don't take my word for it, I'm very new to all this Check the link (hoping I'm allowed to post it) http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=60395&p=451826
Also, once upon a time (a year ago) someone was working on a 4.0 build for the raspberry pi but it seems the project has died or is very low-priority because there's been no news in over a year But anyway, I think there should be a 4.0 build somewhere on the internet. Then there was also that 2.3 build which was working correctly but too slow to actually be usable

yeah doubt it, even if you could it would be a very unpleasant experience, especially if your use to the speed of kitkat.

The only reason I'd be happy about it is netflix. For all other purposes Linux > Android

Netflix's problem is they chose silverlight for browser based streaming. Which as you know is not available for linux.

I don't think KitKat will run fast in raspberry pi
Sent from my Titanium S5 using xda app-developers

It's plenty available for linux. There is Moonlight, a silverlight plugin, but it doesn't support DRM. The reason netflix uses silverlight is for DRM, pure and simple.

Actually. Kitkat should run fine on the pi. Hardware specs are at minimum. But still acceptable

have issue with SplashtopRemoteDesktopHD

hi everyone
have a problem with SplashtopRemoteDesktopHD
when i connect splash remote screen color is issue
anyone use this app on p6800 ? version ?
thx
Yes, I experienced the same thing. The colors are out of registration otherwise it works great especially with a mouse and keyboard.
Yes colors are horribly off but otherwise works fine.
Use the Splashtop Remote for mobile phones and it works great. We will have to wait for them to fix the HD (tablet) version for our 7.7 tablets.
Colours are whack for me too on my galaxy tab 7.7... shame as it truly is an amazing piece of software. It streams a BBC Planet Earth HD rip at acceptable frames over a Wireless 54G connection, through a wall in a room 5m away from the router. That is fricken impressive in my book. Once the colours are fixes this will be a truly amazing and indispensible app for home media!

Chrome, chrome, chrome.....

Ordered my nexus 7 (x2) as soon as there was a button on the UK website. Now I know chrome is the default browser, so I thought sweet, I'll install it on my a500 so I can get used to it before the tab arrive's.
Omg, what a piece of rubbish, every time I change tabs from XDA to another site the page is just plain white, then back to XDA since it was already tabbed and loaded you'd assume it would still be, but no. Its plain white. Then to piss me off even more halve way though writing this post it crashed lol! What kind of a browser crashes inputting text lol. I wanted to like it, in fact I do like the interface but the bugs are just not fun!
uninstalling that crap and going with the good old opera
Anyone else having probs with it ?

I don't know about A500 roms but to me it sounds like a memory issue or something, its sort of "killing" tabs to save memory and then reloading them once you need them again. Maybe some background processes eating memory?

It does crash occasionly if you keep getting a white page it can clear by going back a page then trying again if not close it then task kill it after that it will be fine.
Overall I find it to be far better than std browser.
I'm a very "clean user" I have fb opera order and chaos, that's it. thinking though maybe one of the processes I have disabled, chrome uses, I disable everything I don't use, camera Calender live wp themes etc, maybe that's the issue?
It don't crash for me at all...works fine and it doesn't look bad enough to use something else

It could be possible because the Microsoft tablet uses the tegra 3, same does the n7 so the drivers could be ported easily. Bit would be a difficult task.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
It'd be highly illegal from that standpoint.
Even if someone somehow did it, that person would probably receive a C&D from Microsoft real quick.
I don't see how it would be illegal, unless screwing with the drivers are illegal. I mean you can run windows in a virtual computer or on a mac. So wouldn't it be the same in that sense?

It's illegal cuz you need a license for it and they most likely aren't selling licenses for the RT version to consumers.

Yea, the only plausable way would be a sort of virtualbox app, I don't think there is one or is even possible to make it for x86 emulation.

You can't run x86 on ARM. Windows 8 rt for ARM is a big Windows phone that you can't run any x86 programs on.
Just RDP into your existing Win machine, you can do everything this way. I utilize a Wake on LAN app to wake up my computer and control it with an RDP app.

I don't think you are going to see much in the way of compatible programs in the sense you can't load software you currently own. The ARM version won't run x86 based software. So you'll have to repurchase programs.
Also, as others mentioned, it would be illegal since they do not sell licenses to end users for Windows ARM versions and those are licensed directly to OEMs so you would, at best, need to pirate it somehow. Then there are the driver issues. Just because a Windows tablet and and Android tablet have the same CPU/GPU doesn't mean they have the same storage controllers, etc...so there is another headache. You may as well just buy a Windows RT tablet if that is the route you want to go.
i think the memory itself is not enough except if you have SD card
It would be better to install Ubuntu 12.04 since it is Linux, like someone stated, once in windows, always in windows. I'm pretty sure you need some kind of secureboot bootloader to install windows 8 anyway. You also need to think about the licencing issues, of course they're not going to let you install their software on any old device. Is it even worth the hassle? I'd say no. Ubuntu on the other hand is a good option.
Why bother? Me personally, I hate windows and use android to escape it.

End of tegra characteristic UI lag as we know it? I hope so
I wonder what's taking google too long to roll out 4.4
was using a galaxy tab 2 10.1 and found it silly slow compared to the nexus 7, tegra 3 is considerably faster. and with the new update hopefully it will become even more efficient.

[App] SWE Browser

I have compiled the SWE browser code found here:
https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/Chromium+for+Snapdragon/WebHome
It is like 10GB download and it takes a decent amount of time to download and compile. They don't make it that easy.
Basically this is an optimized browser made for the snapdragon processor. I have been running it for a few weeks and it is pretty solid. Really fast. I did some benchmarks vs firefox and chrome and it is between 10% - 30% faster. It just seems snappier than other browsers.
March Build:
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.rsbrowser.browser
Here are images of the benchmarks.
http://imgur.com/a/aXwmk
Here is a screenshot of the browser

The older version of SWE built by this guy:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/39296-app-chromium-browser-for-snapdragon-nightlies/
Actually had better sunspider scores, but the newer version is much better at octane and kraken.
However it looks like since google switched to the blink engine sunspider is no longer something they are optimizing for. However the SWE browser scores are still 30% faster. It asks for a bunch of permissions. I am not sure which ones are actually necessary so I left it as is.
Update october 25th:
Play Store Link
Update December 27th:
This is my version of the m46 version of the browser:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsbrowser.browser
I have put an updated version of swe browser on the play store. I have been using this for the last 3 weeks. I modified it slightly from the qualcomm version since the qualcomm version tries to launch apps from google search.
This is the m42 version with the AD blocking.
This is probably the best browser out there in my opinion.
I found it funny no one replied this thread so far. Awesome work, great browser, kudos to you for giving it up for free!
Looks even better than chrome too and uses less ram.
