Camera after KitKat? - Moto X Q&A

Hello Everyone,
After hearing of the cyber monday deal, I've decided to make the switch from my Nexus 4 to the Moto X. KitKat and active notifications --not to mention the amazing battery life I've been hearing about-- have been enticing me for weeks. Now that I can feasibly get it off contract, I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger.
My one and only reservation is the camera. I've heard some bad stuff to be sure; however, I've also read somewhere that things have gotten considerably better after an update (kitkat, perhaps?). I also read that there was a new isolated motorola camera app released through the play store recently. Has the camera IQ improved since launch? Not concerned about the app functionality itself --- rather wondering if the image output is more consistent, if the software correction is better, etc.
Thanks in advance! Can't wait to get one of these things...

Got my answer...
If any of the some 67 people who viewed my post are interested in the same question, MKBHD's new Nexus 5/Moto X comparison video sheds some light:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMFLeoDx6J4
short answer for those who don't care to watch it: yes, the camera has been much improved by the new camera update app.
Well, looks like I'm going to have a Moto X soon.

Good video, thanks for posting it. The camera demo for the Moto X was not KitKat. The KitKat version shows a focus/exposure "recticle" in the view finder (also, the status bar close up still had the blue JB icons). That is one of my favorite improvements to the camera. The JB Moto X camera did not have an exposure control, the KitKat version does. Overall the pictures are better in KK on the Moto X.

Picture quality

How about new Moto X picture quality? As we know, it delivers a 13 MP camera, however, the more MP does not mean great picture quality.
Has any picture taken with Moto X been released?
A lot of photo samples are there!

I think that camera quality hasn't been improved and the image processing seems more aggressive than in moto x 2013. Photos are very grainy!!!! The quality of these photos remember me to the razr xt910 that take grainy photos also. I'm very disappointed. Night captures are terrible!!!!
I somewhat agree! I mean if it's really the same sensor which was used in S4 and kinds, then the photos should look better than how they look! Just like the original X the results are inconsistent, one shot looks nice and another really average! Maybe software enhancements are not there, or something...
For me though, the photos are okay, however I don't give much a damn about camera, but still if camera solely is the reason for someone to purchase a phone then I think it's better to look elsewhere. I will however wait for a proper review, these shots might come from a pre release unit running on unstable software.
I think you cats are being over dramatic

Camera

Besides battery, the camera seems to be the biggest dividing factor. How much can updates improve a camera after launch?
Also, what about apps from the store. I don't mind using a 3rd party app for the camera if it's better.
Basically, hardware vs software for the camera?

nothing is going to fix the narrow field of view that the camera has. but everything else is software, which can be updated. the only way an app is going to make things better is if the app is able to process the image on its own. if you want to learn a bit more on it, the latest android central podcast, episode 203, talks about why they think the moto camera is never as good as it should be.

Android Police and other sites did a breakdown of Android L awhile back. Guess what they found? A lot of Camera APIs. So most likely Google finally improved camera software which would definitely help the camera. In terms of hardware, the camera sensor is the same as in the G2 and G3, and those phones take good photos. It must be a software issue, since 4.4.4 isn't that good with images

it is more than that though. the oems do not have to use those apis. and those apis really don't have anything to do with the convesion from light to a pic. this is why i referred to the podcast. here is how it was explained. a camera sensor pics up light. and it is up to the firmware to take that data and turn it into a picture. this firmware is not the api. and moto could license better firmware to give us better pics... but from the looks of it they would rather save some cash. it does not matter that the sensor is the same 'sensor' that is in the gs4, g2, and g3. the 'lenses' are most definitely different and the firmware that converts the light into a pic i also very different from that in the lg and samsung.
i think moto will improve upon it just as they did the last moto x. but i don't think it will ever take as good of pics as the g3.

since this is the case, Moto spending money for the license will up the price in the Moto X, which I think is not what they wanted to do. also, LG, HTC, Sony, and Samsung will most likely not sell their licenses since that is what makes them produce the best pic quality by their standards. maybe old licenses would be sold? even then, I wouldn't want competition to use my stuff. other companies may not want to sell either, so Moto would have to research themselves, which takes more time and more money which will get passed onto the consumer
off topic: so based on what you're saying, maybe that's why the Nexus does not have really good pic quality. imo, Google could still fix it up in L, which will also be passed down to Moto X since it is on vanilla Android. Google did say they want the Nexus line to eventually have a good camera experience, and L may be an answer to that. I am sure Google can incorporate the firmware in for converting light

Do different camera apps help the mediocracy?

Ok, I'll admit it. I had high hopes. I loved my trusty Moto X like a apple phanboi loves Steve Jobs memes. It was the most usable and intuitive phone I've ever used. It was also just the right size. However. The camera ...ahmm...uhhmmm... Sucks. It's terrible and awful and slow. So when my trusty Moto X dove headfirst into the tile and said goodbye to life I decided that the only other option in the right weight class was the Z3c. PLUS, WHOOPPEE.. I'd get a jolly good camera upgrade out of the deal. Yay me!
Now after 2 weeks of trying to convince myself that the camera is great I have to tell the truth. It's mediocre. Or maybe I have a sliver of hope left... Maybe it's just a software problem. Maybe it can be resurrected by a really good aftermarket camera app. I've tried CameraZoom and it has some neat features and I "feel like" the shutter lag is a millisecond less... Maybe.
Has anyone found a zippy and fantastical camera app that will help me get over the feeling that I wasted 2 weeks on international shipping and $530 on a pretty decent 2012 phone?
Puhleeese?
Thanks!

Google camera? The hardware is brand new btw. It's just the camera that isn't completely up to date. But it still makes some great pictures I think. It's not the best camera on the market but when you use it in manual mode it can make some good pictures.

I have tried a few apps, but the particular flaws I find annoying (the sharpening and general over processing) are still there. However, the color balance seem better in some other apps, like google camera and snap camera, and possibly slightly sharper detail. But these are all subjective opinions, it's not like I have done a proper test in controlled conditions. Definitely worth checking out tho!
I'm hoping for the RAW capabilities in Android 5, and ensuing apps, to solve this problem.

[Q] Moto X Camera updates

Hi All,
I'm looking at getting the new Moto X for my partner as her birthday present. Would everyone recommend it?
We have seen online a small review that stated the battery was a little smaller than the battery in something like a s5, what is the battery life in "real use"? Is it enough to last her the day with medium use?
I've also seen that the camera struggles in low light, to me its not a problem but she has asked me to ask you guys if anyone knows of any updates to try and correct that?
Thanks for your help!
Darren
Yes definitely. Make use of moto maker to design to her liking! It'll last a day's normal usage easily for me. I get 3-5 hours screen on time everyday depending on whether I'm using data or WiFi.
Camera is good in day light, especially in normal shots, struggles a little in macro shots. Low light performance isn't great, but lollipop is touted to bring quite some camera improvements. Overall, go for it
Install Snap Camera, its got lots and lots of features yet a minimal onscreen interface. Keep the ISO at 100 or 200 and low light photos should also come out with lesser noise.

Battery life is better than the modest size would suggest - I'm currently able to get around 4.5 to 5.5 hours of screen on time. It will definitely last a full day with medium use.
Low light performance is average - I personally find you can take better shots if you enable the "control of focus and exposure" setting and choose the focal point yourself. Low light shots ultimately will have a tendency to come out noisy and a bit blurry. In the greater scheme of things it's not that bad as far as smartphone cameras go (they all suck in low light to some degree) so I wouldn't class it as a deal breaker.

Thanks. I'll have a chat with her and she want she wants, no doubt she will change her mind and want a nexus 6 when that's fully launched.

The battery does surprisingly well, but if you want a decent camera go LG or Samsung.

good buy or na?

So my buddy has told me he will sell me his moto x4 for 90 bucks. There's nothing wrong with it and I checked the specs from here and gsmarena but I still want user input. Is this a good buy? If so I'll be coming a Moto g6 play and if you have seen there's not alot of development for that device and it doesn't seem there be in the near future

Camera is only with google camera king, stock cam has a terrible noise reduction algorithm haha
Hardware is great. Software is bad. It doesn't support call recording in Android pie OS, even with 3rd Application. For that you need rooting.
Thanks Guyd lol I had planned on using a Google camera apk anyway I hate Moto stock cam and I don't care about call recording tbh as long as I'm able to run pubg. And I don't so much about the software since there is clearly way more Dev support here than For my g6 play. I'll be part of the x4 family Wednesday ? screw this g6 play lmao
