Will current Glass from Explorer program be the same as the release version? - Glass Q&A

I finally got an invite! So excited!!
But now I have a question, since I assume Google Glass will be released to the public pretty soon (?)...
Will the release glasses be the same as the ones I'd get from the Explorer Program?
Also if I'll want prescription lenses, anyone have info on that?
Thanks
Nat

The expectation is that the hardware will not be changing.
Rochester Optical will be releasing prescription lenses and frames starting at $99 in a few days. Google is also releasing frames for prescription lenses but has not announced when.

Cracked Camera Lens

My camera lens has cracked. I know it can be peeled off, but I want to try to find a replacement. Does anyone know where I could order this part to put it back on myself? Ive done quite a bit of looking on google, and havent found anything solid.
Thanks!
OEM HTC Droid Incredible Camera $22.99
Only problem is it looks like you have to buy a minimum of 3.. cheap enough that you could probably sell the other 2 on Ebay or to someone on here who wants a spare..
If you look at the other cameras they sell, they are the photo units themselves, not the lens. I would say 22 bucks is more likely the price for the camera unit. Very nice find though!
Maybe you can call them and findout if they info on that.. odd that they wouldnt have the lens when they have almost everything else..
Global Direct Parts Tel: 1-210-444-9469 e-mail: [email protected]
A coworker of mine had his lens cover "push in" to the housing and VZW replaced it for him.
Well I don't have insurance, and the lens is cracked, not just pushed in.
He didn't have insurance either...
What do you have to lose by calling VZW and asking them? A wasted 5 minutes?
they even replaced my bricked phone for free with overnight shipping......
I got the red development cover off EBay. It came with a new back plate that has red buttons and a silver camera ring.
I'm not sure if I'm going to try replacing it or not... But would have an extra lens cover if I decide not to.
If it has the lens and all still in it I will gladly paypal ya for it.
Looks like that globaldirect place added a part.. this coujld be it if you are still looking for it.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/HTC-Droid-Incredible-Camera-Bezel-p/htc738845.htm
That looks to be the part. I'm ordering 2 and will update with what they are exactly.
can you update with what that part is exactly? i'm thinking about trying to change mine out and would be nice to know exactly what i'm getting before ordering. i e-mailed them but haven't gotten a response yet...
mainly i'm interested in knowing does it come with the glass too, or is it just the bezel?
Anyone find a camera lens cover glass part yet?
Got the lenses in finally. Sorry it took so long, I was out of town on business for a bit. The glass lenses are included with the bezels, but there is no foam bumper like the stock lens. I keep my phone in the Speck case so that really isnt an issue. The lenses are protected by a plastic film which was nice. If anyone has any questions let me know. One concern i do have is glass seems to be off center on one of the bezels i received. I am going to contact them about that.
Any updates? Mine fell off but the camera still functions well. As much as I love the phone, I'm beginning to see just how cheap it is.
it seem like my DINC camera lens are coming offing too. if i pressed little bit harder, it will popped right inside.....
I have a loose lens, as well...
Love the Dinc...hopefully the dinc2 will be a little better quality...
If you have a tiny bit of skill you can make one out of any thin piece of clear plastic. Grab an old boombox or phone or something you don't use anymore with clear plastic and then grab your file and get to work. Free fix.

What is the crystal made from?

Does any member have any information regarding the Gears watch Crystal? I doubt it is sapphire glass but ponder if its Corning Gorilla. I ask as I notice some third party brands are already offering screen savers? On a watch though? I can say this with no hesitation if the glass is not strong I will be numero uno to bust it. All my watches have a sapphire crystal for this reason.
What happens when that strap wears out? It appears an integral part of the watch and non replaceable? Again any one know what the strap is made from?
I think in all my years of purchasing technology this is my first without actually seeing the device. Still a fool is soon parted from his money so that's why I am broke again!:silly:
Thanks in advance,

I do hope you are correct. sapphire glass rates only second to diamond in terms of hardness. Sapphire glass costs a fortune though! How the heck have Samsung managed to fit a sapphire glass that size when the glass alone would cover the total cost of the watch?
Why are Samsung so secretive about the specs. I still cannot find 'an official' spec from Samsung that has this information in writing?
No need for screen saver with sapphire glass that a given. I do hope you are correct.:good:
Regards.
Bulk purchasing power, that is how Samsung manages it plus they are likely not making anything off version 1.0 so they can get more sales on the Galaxy Note series they are tied into.
Guess I beat you guys to it.. :|

As I suspected from the word go, its NOT sapphire glass.
This is one of those occasions where I hate to be proved correct. I thought sapphire was too good to be true.
I have written a reply in your other thread regarding your problem.

No confrontation from me at all when I ask where you got that information from? The safety booklet that comes in the box in SOME countries, not this one, says; Glass or acrylic?
How could it be Glass or acrylic, its either one or the other and if Samsung don't know who does?
Again, I would question Coning glass as mine already has minute marks on the glass and I treat my watches with the greatest care and respect, I collect them.
Agggggga, cant we find a definitive answer to this?
Thanks for your input though. Please do let us know where this information comes from.
Kind regards.

Nothing official then or printed on a Samsung site? Reps will and do say anything. I have no idea where your rep got his info' from?
The warranty book that comes in the box in most countries states the crystal is made from Glass or acrylic? Don't ask I have no idea.
One chap I asked said the crystal was "Some sort of glass and the camera lens is acrylic"?
Absurd not being able to ascertain such basic information in writing from Samsung. I have now put mine back in its box until some screen savers arrive. I don't want to risk scratching that large screen, would detract from the looks.
Regards
I haven't even been able to use it for more than one day. Watch is sitting in its box back home, will contact my service provider once am back from my trip..

Same with me. Add to the lack of consumer knowledge regarding the crystal I am seeing more and more posts regarding the lens misting up.
This has been due to perspiration. I live in the hottest country in Europe and just a walk to the post box can make one sweat especially under ones watch. My concern is that lens plus those bare contacts, will they short out? No exposed electronics like moisture!
Have got to the point where I am just not using the watch, I just don't need this hassle-worry right now. Like many others I have a waiting list of problems and a wrist watch will have to join the end of a long list of far high prioritise.
Best wishes.
I have a few micro scratches on my watch face now. I had a cheap screen protector on it for all of last week and I removed it Saturday because I thought that the glass was sapphire. Well it must not be, because I wiped the dust off of the face with my shirt and now I have a few scratches. They are very small but I can see them in the right lighting.

Hi, From posts I am reading it certainly appears the crystal is not sapphire. At this price I thought it impossible even though a few posters assured me it was sapphire.
I have already re ordered some screen savers BUT screen savers on a watch? The problem is the crystal is raised so will attract every tiny mark as yours has done. Add this to the camera misting up, the clasp being the most unreliable type of design possible, poor IP protection and the Gear is already a hard ware nightmare.
I will probably be purchasing the Sony 11 when it arrives here as already I am seeing in some other countries the price has dropped.
Overall I suspect the gear was rushed into production without research and development just to try and be the first of its type on the market regardless of some very poor design faults. On this occasion Samsung has not impressed me.
Oh BTW, why has Samsung introduced the Note 3 some weeks ago yet we are still waiting to see any official Samsung accessories like the numerous covers we have been promised? I think Samsung has feelings or grandeur and is due a fall. Did you know all Note 3 are region locked and Samsung is about to do this with the S4 etc?
No idea why a brand would deliberately alienate its customer base like this.
I am still unable to ascertain from Samsung what the crystal is actually made from.
Kind regards.

I don't even think the watch face is crystal at all. It feels like some degree of plastic in all honesty. You would expect crystal to feel hard and cold which this doesn't. I have Omega and other Swiss watches and their faces feel a lot better. I wouldn't get your hopes up that the face is made up of quality components. Its price is just too low for that.

Indeed so. Your Omega will 99% certain be sapphire though a very few have another type of watch crystal. The term 'crystal' is watch trade jargon for the glass. Though I am NOT in the watch trade my family has been for over 100 years. I also collect watches.
One kind poster here replied that the booklet he received inside his Gear box actually had written " glass-acrylic" That threw me for a complete loop as its either one or the other. I have asked my family and to their knowledge there is not a hybrid glass acrylic watch crystal?
The point that rather puzzles and disappoints me is when I asked Samsung in writing what the crystal was made of they replied that I had asked an "inappropriate question"? What on earth does that mean and why all the secrecy?
Another poster has said the crystal is made from Corning Gorilla glass 111, I requested his source for this information but to date no reply?
WE should be informed so we can take the level of care needed depending on the materials used. My other grave concern is the very low Ingress protection. This is first and foremost a wrist watch and needs to function to a certain degree of robustness and water protection OR the b++++y gear is as useful as boobies to a Nun!
Such potential yet so much of it seems incomplete?
Kind regards.
My Casio protrek and Suunto watch crystals are way more robust than these. And I have actually had zillions of mishaps with the protrek. Not a single scratch yet, nor in the Crystal nor the titanium band.

Replacement camera lens?

Cracked the glass camera lens the other day on an amusement park ride. Anyone aware of a source for replacement?
i think u should change ALL the band........... included speaker ecc..... sorry

here is how to open it

now we need to find same glass +/- like for cell phone, or so on. I am not going to pay 70 Euro for a such a small glass
Buy a Samsung Gear display watch and source the lens from it. They are less then $10 US and come apart the same way as the real gear.

[Q] Anybody used progressive lenses like ...

Has anybody here tried using progressive lenses with Glass? I tried Glass over my progressives and it seemed fine, but of course wearing Glass over a separate pair of glasses is very ugly. When I got the prescription frames, I discovered they were apparently incompatible with progressive lenses (as well as bifocals), or at least that's what the local stores said. This greatly limits how convenient Glass is for me.
I recently saw the Wetley GGRX Adapter w/ Custom Multifocal Progressive Lenses for Google Glass advertised. Has anybody tried these? I am pretty squeamish about ordering expensive corrective lenses over the Internet and would welcome any feedback.
I got the Google Bold frames and had my progressive prescription put in them. They work extremely well. It was also a fun way to turn a $1500 purchase into a $2300 expense. But it's only money. If I didn't spend it on that I'd probably just waste it on food.

Thanks. I tried two local eyeglass chains and both said the "thin" Glass frames I have were incompatible with progressive lenses. Maybe the "bold" frames are different in that regard.

I have the split glass frames which aren't that different from the thin frames and it wasn't a problem at all. I did go to a doctor that was glass certified, not that I think that should make that much of a difference.
I went to two Glass approved optometrists and neither had an issue with a progressive in the thin frames.

i guess they want to get the hype train rolling. but kudos to them for giving us a hands on tour before the sept 1 announcement.
yes, the wide angle camera is annoying. oh well. beggers can't be choosers.
thoughts?
i'm skipping this version. all the "new" features don't amount to another $2000+ purchase (without the trade in of course).
This version has me so intrigued. I did not get the first edition. But I am going to get this one. I have the note 10+ and love it. But the note 20 ultra did not seem to move me to get it. This version of the fold seems more complete. I'm just worried on how delicate it really is.

Is there any information on the wide angle lens here? I didn't hear or see anything.
Main camera: 12 MP (OIS, PDAF)
Second camera: 64 MP (Telephoto, PDAF)
Third camera: 12 MP (Ultra-wide, OIS, PDAF)
Video recording: 3840x2160 (4K UHD)
Front: 10 MP (HDR)
Folded: 10 MP
the video presenter was very annoying. just not a good way to show this new tech off.
it was nice to see the fold, tab, and watch but the wide angle distorted the size of them. the presenter here was annoying.
that said. ive already bought the note 20 ultra 5g and i have a spare line for the fold, so i plan to get it. i already signed up for the pre order through samsung.

Me too, doesn't make sense to me. Although I'll prob put a case on anyway. Not liking the bronze much, gonna go black.
I don't love the bronze but I like it well enough to choose it over the fingerprint magnet, aka black. I'm thinking about running this one out of a pouch so the fingerprint aspect is going to matter.

I'm hoping for some good case offerings. In the US, Samsung.com had no cases offered during pre-order and none appearing in the accessories section of their website. Samsung cases are odd as well. Only covering just one side of the Fold and supposedly pretty pricey.

For anyone reading this thread I want to correct these details.
Not sure how accurate this is but there is no 64 MP camera, all the rear camera's are 12 MP.
From - https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-2/
Rear Camera
Primary: 12MP, f/1.8, OIS
Secondary: 12MP, f/2.2, ultra-wide-angle
Tertiary: 12MP, f/2.4, telephoto
Front Camera
Folded: 10MP, f/2.2, fixed focus
Unfolded: 10MP, f/2.2, fixed focus
To put this into context at that time there were no official specs and those were the expected "leaked" numbers I posted; thanks for the correction.

I don’t disagree. Many people like minimalist cases so the Samsung options would have been perfect. I think it goes to show that not everyone is paranoid about the durability.
also agree. im not paranoid at all and plan to use the fold z sans case , but keep it in a pouch. ive seen some cats use the OG fold with no case and the phone looked great. im not in a habit of dropping phones but i do like th kickstand case for the reason that i can use that kickstand to prop up the device.
