Sony Xperia Z1s - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since this features the exact same hardware but different radio, will most or all ROM's work for it? Thinking about selling my Z1 for this since my service provider is T-Mobile.
Sent from my Beast from the East

You what? Did you search well before decide that? The Z1s is a chinese crap with the plastic body, not aluminium. Don't even think about to buy that one, trust me.

Uh yeah I did. If you haven't searched yet, the Z1s is THE EXACT SAME as the Z1 but with T-Mo's radio. They released the Z1 with 32GB internal and named it Z1s For T-Mobile. Do some research and correct me if I'm wrong before you start being rude to me or anyone here on XDA.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound dickish, it's just I'm trying to get an answer that way I know which route to go. I use folder mount already so internal isn't an issue and I have the LTE version which already supports T-Mobile's bands. I was looking into getting the compact just because I always thought 4.3" was the perfect screen size. Although, I hate to say it, but I'm thinking about selling my Z1 to get the One+ since it's "reportedly" gonna have the Snapdragon 805 CPU, NFC, and finally an SD card slot (which I desperately need). I do love the waterproofness though. For a 5" phone, the Z1 is bigger than any 5" phone I've held or used. Opinion?

You right, I saw a HTC One Max at the same price of the Z1 and it's make my mind to jump to HTC.
I do not know it's comming out HTC One soon whit this features, do you have a link? I love my Z1 but if HTC One come out with the same features as Sony Z1, without waterpeoofness only, I will think about it too.
I always had HTC and the developing section no matter what is huge all the time so easely we will have Data on SD and Apps on Internal Storage for sure and more.
I hope the Sony developing section will grow up and made some really important improvement.
So at the moment I don't know what to think, the decision have to be final because any 6 mounts some new device appear on the market.
I keep mine Z1 until the right HTC do not come out and I will think what to do.
If I see we have 2 amazing devices but with HTC I will have all what I need with the developing section too probably I will jump to HTC too.

Another question...
Should I stick with the Z1 or downgrade to the Z1 Compact? I have a strong preference for 4.3" screen sizes for some reason. Anyone agree or disagree?

It's not a big downgrade because the Compact have all what Z1 has, what is missed its 1080p and 5 inch screen only so I think you should choice the device for the purpose which you will do with it. I love the Z1 and the 5" screen do not bother me at all. Bigger screen probably will do. I hope just the Z1 Compact will be fully working phone, not like some Z1 with some touch screen issues or something else.

I read that Quads are no use on apps and games? also sony dual is much as powerfull as the one x quad?
Quads are useful for games that utilize it. Apps not as much. And android overall no. But the adreno 320 is a pretty good GPU.

I came from a One X to the XpT and I've not looked back.
As it stands, the HTC doesn't have S-Off so you need to use a PC every time you want to flash a new ROM.
HTC have really screwed the pooch and I'll never buy HTC again until they sort themselves out.
As it sounds like you enjoy modding your phones, I'd give the HTCs a wide berth.
Perfect example is CM10, it took months to get CM10 to be on get.cm for the HTC. It took a few days for the XpT.
If you decide you want the HTC One X anyway, I'll sell you my black 32GB one.
TX gorgeous 720p display with 13mpx camera
well i was had a hard time to decided which one is really fit for me
my choices is Xperia T, Xperia SL, HOX, S III
but i decided to get XT, i like the design, it's better than the others IMO

Still Worth a Buy?

I'm am looking for opinions on buying this phone NOW.
I am currently using the HTC One. I have been through a lot of devices, lately and looking for that "perfect" device and I was holding off on the Xperia Z mostly due to the price unlocked. I broke down and got the HTC One on contract in the US. Its a great phone, but just lacks that wow factor. It's like the Honda of phones, everything done well, nothing spectacular.
So, thinking I can flip it for the same price if not more than the Xperia Z, I'm looking again.
With all the other flagships out there or soon to be out there, do you think buying the Z now still makes sense?
Thanks for looking
Yes, definitely worth it. I've been using this beast for the past 2months & i can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

There isn't much difference apart from the UI and the camera between the htc one and the xz. The HTC has a newer processor, the XZ has a better camera. Different screen technologies. If I was you I would stick with the One unless you don't like it at all. They are both good phones.
the only wow factor that XZ has over One is the water-proof feature. Beside that, One is better than Z in most aspects. If you want something to show off to your friend, you better check for Galaxy S4 as it has many features such as "fun" (and mostly useless) gestures:highfive:

I was in same situation as you, I ended up selling the HTC One and bought a Xperia Z.
For me it was mainly that accessibility service has major bugs in the lock screen when it's turned on for my pebble service. And I need this turned on to use my pebble smartwatch.
Also not a huge fan of sense, I much prefer stock android, and sony is much closer to that. And I just like the design of the Xperia Z overall.
HTC did have a better screen with better viewing angles, but I didn't really find that an issue with the Xperia z.
I am also using an S4 from my company and I still prefer the Xperia Z over it. All the new "features" aren't really that practical in real life use. It doesn't look like a premium phone, just the same as the S3. Touchwiz isn't so bad, but when i enable accessibility settings for my pebble watch it disables a number of the new "features". Dunno why.
This was my experience, obviously yours will be different.
It's really all down to what YOU prefer. I would advise you to have a try, play around and see what you like first.

Keep my s4 or get a xperia z?

So I just picked up a s4 from tmo and I'm running carbon ROM and it runs awesome.. However, I can't stand the giant home button in the center I miss the software keys on my nexus 4.. My question is how is the camera quality on aosp roms? From what I've read in the forums its a hit or miss. Also, how hard is it to boot into recovery?

Honest opinion.. Keep your S4.
If you can get an Xperia with an Unlockable boot loader then its fairly easy, otherwise it could be impossible. Custom Rom development is slower than some devices but I have full confidence that our devs will be able to release 100% functional roms in no time at all!
You may want to wait for someone with more knowledge on the US T-Mobile variant of the Xperia Z as to how easy it is to mod
Put it this way.. Given the option I probably would swap my Xperia Z for an S4

AOSP roms are pretty much bug free now that the wake delay has been fixed. Only remaining bug is HDMI out doesn't work.

He just hates the xperia z but still using it.
The display on the S4 is definitely better in my opinion.
I like the design of the Z though and the materials from which it's made but the biggest reason I like Sony over other Android phones is the UI (It's simple yet beautiful)
I find the battery on the Z more than acceptable, I'm not a heavy-user but I've never run out of charge before the end of the night (or even come close).
The biggest advantage of the S4 is the display (The processor doesn't make a difference to me... It may make a difference to you though!)
I don't know about the S4's camera but the XPERIA Z camera is rather good (lightyears better than the XPERIA S).
Just my 2 cents, no facts here.

Why not sell your phone if it sux so much? Lol.
To the op,
I had nexus 4, sold it and got the 32g sg3.
Bought the XZ and have not regretted my choice. Never powered the gs3 on again infact.
It's similar to using N4, even stock Sony launcher is nice.
Screen is better and the camera runs rings around the nexus.
Expandable memory and is quite easily rooted for mods.
Flashtool is easy to use.
Unlocked bootloader or not is no real big deal. Stock roms with root get you through the day.
Personal opinion of course.

How am I a troll if I own the phone. I'm entitle to my opinion and you are entitle to your ignorant comment.
If you are not on the move all day, I highly recommend Xperia Z. It offers superior build quality, user experience and better camera (in 4.2). Galaxy S4 is super hyped up with plenty of gimmicks you don't use. Overall, it's an excellent choice to make the move. I think the S4 gives a crappy feeling of plastic and there's no "WOW" factor. Xperia Z is water resistance which gives some form of insurance in case anything happens.

Yeah. Frustrating how all technology does that
Suck it up, sell it and move along.
Might be able to pick up a nice (cough cough) HTC One or SGS4 for a similar price.
I'd say the grass isn't always greener but Samsung's over-saturated screen will certainly take care of that!

Nexus hat 4 core proc and 2GB Ram. SP 2 core and 1GB, but. That was the reason why I bought SP not Nexus. You can use SD Cards.
yeah but 4 cores and 2 cores menas nothing at this moment... + N4 have problem with thottling.
go with that what you want. I mean choose that what you preffer, design, size, ergonomy etc.

Advantages of SONY Xperia SP:
1) SP got a nicer design. (You'll be proud of what you hold in your hand. It's even shines different colors wow ).
2) Best specification for this price. (At the moment and next year too imho your device will rock)
3) It's pretty popular. (fresh ROMs, twicks and stuff will be for your choice)
Disadvantages of Sony:
1) It starts warmin' up at huge games. (but may be they'll fix it later)
2) Main speaker got some dirt.
I'm using SP for 4 month and still love it. (best of Xperia devices)
Oh, and it has metal frame, which makes it more secure and more valuable. :good:

depends really on what you want and what you need. I was so convinced at first in buying the Nexus 4 over the SP, but I got sour of the Nexus' very stock UI (though many prefer this) and design. So i went for the SP, and i cant be much happier. The LEDs are cool too, plus you get that premium look. My friends says it looks like an iPhone (I got the white one), which is a complement for them though i get kinda insulted everytime they say that.
I had considered to buy Nexus 4, but bought XSP instead because N4 has frail glass back, no SD card, and poorer battery. Those are deal breakers for me.

depends really on what you want and what you need.

I feel the same way for the UI , and yh this phone is a fancy one. + Im not carefull so i drop phones often so the N4 isnt gonna survive for a long time. Im gonna get the xSP for sure.Tnq u guys!

[Q] Is the Z1s worth getting without being able to root?

I'm in the market for a new phone and the only thing keeping me on the fence with the Z1s is the lack of root and despite the bounty on it, progress looks to be slowing. Can anyone make an argument for this phone on stock over an equivalently spec'd phone that can be rooted?

Do you care about it being waterproof? Do you care about a horrible screen? (Yes, the screen is terrible). Sony's software is good enough to use without any rooting, but what other phones were you looking at?
Well, I'm moving up from a Galaxy Nexus who's screen has horrible burnin so I guess calling the Z1s screen terrible is a relative statement. I'm mainly looking to buy through tmobile. Their phone offering is kind of weak, atleast until they stock the S5 but I'm sort of weary of AMOLED screens after the galaxy nexus. The only other phone I was seriously considering was the 2013 HTC One which i know has root but obviously its a bit dated by comparison. Could you recommend any other competitor? Maybe even through AT&T?
Come on buddy. Let's positive thinking here. It's not able yet, beside think about quad core, 2 GB ram, 16 GB internal memory, plus 20 mp camera. You'll be proud of it.

To each his own, but personally i wouldn't ever be interested in a phone where i can't unlock the bootloader. So a phone without root and without bootloader unlocking? No way for me. I love my Z1 though, but have the unlocked international version

If you really don't care about the screen, it's a good phone. I forgot to mention that the tmobile version of this phone is HUGE. It's bigger than the Z1. What about the Nexus 5? The HTC one 2013 is still a really great phone. They ported Sense 6 to it now with everything working.
The camera on this phone is about equal to the HTC one's camera. More MP though.

The phone has a huge list of Pros and while no root is the only con I can give it, it's a pretty big one. I have a broken galaxy nexus and disposable income burning a hol through my pocket. I'm going to have a new phone by the end of the day. I'm just trying to weigh which hurts less either a bit of an outdated phone with root or the Z1s without root.

Root will eventually come in August when jcase said he would release it. Another question is do you care about slow updates? The Z1 just got KK, but the tmobile version will likely have to wait a few more months. HTC seems to be doing well updating their phones. I would get the HTC One if I were you. Maybe even the new HTC one that's being release tomorrow.

The slow updates was a bit of a bummer but I could live with it. I asked whether Tmobile would offer the HTC one tomorrow but the rep sounded doubtful. I could simply go with the HTC One and then jump to the 2014 model after a few months when tmobile has them stocked. The other reason I'm considering the HTC one is for it's build quality. I'd be taking a bit of a hit on horsepower though but still an absolute upgrade from the galaxy nexus.
You may have convinced me to take the HTC one actually lol.

Yeah no one knows about that. There are some rumors that Verizon will have it for 2 weeks before everyone else, but some rumors say all carriers get it tomorrow. The 2013 one is still pretty fast though.
@aooga
The htc one camera is definitively one of the worst camera ever seen in the last years
Check gsmarena comparisons if you don't trust me
And this only would made me skip this phone
Anyway, I would skip the S5 due to its crappy ui
And the z1s for his closeness
Couldn't you buy an unlocked phone maybe? I know US mentality is quite different.. but cmon is there really this saving?

Hmm. I didn't see that when I had it. The camera was really good both in low light and outside. The Z1 camera takes a lot of fiddling to get shots, but when you get it right, they're pretty good.
Oooohhh, the camera..... yea that just bummed me out of the HTC One. Ugh. I guess it's back to square one. I gave the nexus 5 a thought and the only real reason I dismissed it was because my brother has it.

What's so bad about it?

Just to be clear: you can root your device with locked bootloader. You just can't install custom roms. It's just a bit of work to get a rooted Kitkat.
I love the device. Sonys firmware is really good I didn't have any reason to use custom roms yet. It's closer to pure Android than the other 3 brands.
The camera is good (with a bit practice). I've bought the device mainly because of the huge battery

The problem is exactly there. When I open photos load they are good. Then I say: "oh, let's take a look at those people up there" or "let's check that bird on the seaside "
And I zoom in.. and you realize photos suck (a ****ty galaxy ace can even beat the one! holy jesus..)
anyway, I wouldn't boycott the ****ing close contract system if I were you... but if you aren't so prudish, well, z1s would be a good deal
Otherwise, go unlocked nexus 5/xperia z/xperia z1

No you can't on the Z1s. That's why there's a $600+ bounty.

Seriously, if u look for the T-mobile Z1s just becoz of the "nice deal"
Go to ebay instead bro

If you live in the US, buying phones from the carrier is actual beneficial. Tmobile has something called JUMP that lets you get a phone every 6 months if you buy the phone from them. And you pay nothing up front.
