[MOD]Thermal control disabler aka 4K overheating workaround fix - Xperia Z2 Android Development

Here is a simple workaround fix for the 4K overheating issue. It disables thermal control in the camera app so you may record the video even if the device is hot.
This is a dirty fix and should be used with EXTREME caution. I'm not responsible for any bricks, etc.
Usage:
1. Backup your current ROM.
2. Backup both SemcPowerSaveModule.apk and SemcPowerSaveModule.odex (if exists).
3. Ensure you're on .402 or .314 firmware.
3. Flash my fix in recovery.
4. Enjoy!
Warning: I had good results with the fix after lowering my Z2 CPU clocks. Do not use the Camera if it's really hot outside, this isn't healthy for the device!!

I cannot speak for others, but I was able to record an over ten minutes 4K video after using this. However the file was extremely big and the device was extremely hot. Later I downclocked to 1,7Ghz and tried again with a 6mins video and the heat was bearable.
I basically changed the temp that triggers the camera turn off.

This is a really bad idea. The thermal limit is i place for a reason, with this mod you seriously risk permanently damaging your phone. As op said, use with extreme care.

This isn't meant for daily use.

So what's the temp limit in your mod ?

Nothing is as pleasing as a 12GB video recording on a phone...

Nice mod, especially because you didn't tweak it to high... but that's not smart to do often.
One video and let your device cool for a bit...
Overheating FC isn't error or bug, that's added for a purpose.
We all know what could happen if cpu works after critical temperature reach.
Your device could literally explode..
Now we see all glory of using same cpu as on Z1 but overclocked...
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

Useful as my camera often closes for normal use if the ambient temp is too high. I think it is too sensitive as the phone and battery get much hotter during gaming with no issues
Sent from my Z2 using Tapatalk

better try to tweak the kernel to produce less heat by undervolting or underclocking.
What is the lowest clock you can record a stable fuild 4K video with?

FC Stock Camera app
To Prevent force closing of camera app just freeze the overheat control service
Be careful because of the temperature it is just reaches 50 degrees it's dangerously for the phone

That's actually a worse idea, because the overheat control service controls more then just preventing the overheating the camera. It has also switches for Wifi overheating control, frequency changes and it also controls the power saving features of the phone.

Overclocking Kernels for the TF701t

Hi, does anyone know of any kernels available for the tf701 so we can overclock/underclock the processor better? I still am kind of new to this forum. I want to do this for overall battery life improvement and also performance improvements as a bonus. thanks for your help!!

There are none currently.
Not sure the device really needs it either. It's very fast as it and would only generate more heat and worse battery on an already hot device.
Tweaking the kernel and rom are much better options (CROMi-X )

I essentially wanted to use SetCPU in order to dramatically underclock the processor during sleep and slightly underclock it while its screen is on (because who needs all this processing power really?). This could possibly stretch out my battery life by another day. Do you think that will be possible to do when I install a different ROM on the tablet? (like yours for example)
Ah ok - download trickster mod and set the min and max freq there. SetCPU is years old and won't work with our device

Nope - it just sets the min and max.
I wonder why it gets hot though. I thought these are SoC's and aren't supposed to get hot. The tf101 didnt get hot at all. But if you overclocked it to 1.6 it started to get warm.
Does anyone know if this happens as regularly on cm11 or another aosp ROM? Also, what's a good max level to clock it at so I don't constantly worry about the heat issue?

What exactly are you worried about? You can't clock it past 1.9GHz anyway which while it might get toasty it won't fry an egg or anything.

Custom roms, or stock rom modification?

Hi,
im on stock rom, with bootloader unlocked and root installed. my deivce is still very hot even after system configurations, so id like some advice on how to tweak the kernel or improve performance, make it not overheat, install custom roms or delete system apps and so on.
Ive tried uninstaller system applications or bloatware, tweaking the kernel with CPU Tuner, installing and configuring the L Speed app, who i was someone had awesome resaults with here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/themes-apps/one-to-tweak-apps-l-speed-t3350288
i only get around 2 hrs of screen on time with my deice, and a lot of heat, i saw it over 80 degrees yesterday...
id like some good optimization and battery life for the device, as im not able to do so now...
thanks in advanced

Ive been using that firmware sins the day it released (a weak ago almost)? but no change there...
what i have done now is done some heavy modifications to the kernel and some CPU governors.
I flashed this Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/development/kernel-andropluskernel-t3392772
the kernel works like a dream after under-clocking it with this program: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=no
Used the "alucard" governor, CPU is sitting around 60 degrees when using the camera, and its a bit laggy, but much more survivable that it was before...
This Kernel is the best you can do, perhaps you can try to deactivate one or two of the big cores.

I never tweaked anything but mine is only hot when I play heavy games and record video for more than 20 mins (720p)
Anyway your lag is too much or just a little bit???
And one thing I use stamina mode whenever I'm about to do something CPUy
So try it without tweaks and tell me what's the result.

I get the stamina thing, id do that too if i did not need the screen brightness
The laggs are not small, im talking CPU om 80 degrees an so hot that i can not touch top backside of the phone
and thats withou any tweaks on MM .244 with everything stock. Ive also tried it with root, but really that does not make any differense, i need to edit the kernel to be able to use the camera, or else it will shut down when recording in 720p.
Anyways, underclocking the device for me, actualle made it faster in my case, i have no idea why makes no sense, but there is no throtteling and cpu struggles when underclocking it, so now it relly smooth, a lot smoother than on stock .244 MM,
Hope it help!

Supertweak for amazing performance b383 b386

Hey guys after long research i finally found how to solve forever the gaming smoothness and all performance with our p9
You just st have to be rooted and paste and replace those 3 files inside the . zip to this directory
/product/etc/hwpg
I could play all games, chain lots of benchmark without any lag
You can look at the screenshot to see my performance on antutu before my scores goes to 97000 to 83000 after 3 test.
I can also say i'm able to play modern combat 5, gt racing 2 without any lag at all
Test and tell me how your P9 look like a P10 now
On this screenshot you can see all improvement you'll get in front of stock P9 with really better scores on games
I think thats the max huawei allows, there can be more if a custom kernel or sources exist.

To be honest i have to test one fully day but it seems very good cause i just modded thermal configuration to haven't this huawei's disaster throttling.. So, task are done faster with higher cpu frequencies but with shorter time... I did some game and i can see my battery stay very good!
Plus when i saw configuration of those thermal files i could see it started throttling at 44 degrees.... So it was very low
If you want i can post a screenshot of my cpu temp with this mod but it's also very good a'd nit very high
I was test it now on antutu... Original settings: 3D score 10641/total 86541 and text "game performance is mid-level". With this supertweak: 3D score 20399/total 99597 and text"run smoothly for 3D games in mid-quality mode" it's better and faster, but only thing: is this safe to use this tweak ?

For me it's safe i just disable the hard throttling part made by huawei and if you have kernel adiutor or cpu z to control your temp you will see it's not so hot, plus i'm sure always throttling and playing with cpu and gpu freq so much finally eat battery.
Attached a screenshot of my cpu temp
Id either throttling big and work more with little to save battery.

First you must have a rooted phone and replace those files in the good folder with an app like root explorer and after it's done you just have to reboot your phone

With setcpu or other cpu manager app, you can change governor etc, but you can't disable the throttling made by huawei and then without this tweak your phone will slow down even if you put freq to max or governor to performance or not

[EXPERIMENTAL] Throttling and it's caveats

While being owner of my Redmi Note 7, which definitely has some issues, I started experimenting with it.
Throttling is a common term amongst electronics and such. It's a way to safe our precious silicon from eventually cooking under high temperatures. There're a lot of issues involved here. Let me explain:
Xiaomi's belief is maximizing battery life while forgetting about optimal device's performance. Here's the issue, though - neither of which are properly calibrated. For a battery of this size, you would expect something better, but it's not. Looking through system files, there are several thermal config files, which simply tells to the thermal-engine binary at what state device should throttle. Sounds like a good idea, right? Yeah, not quite.
Upon opening these exact config files you see several lines, which describe temperature thresholds and which frequency device should start to use under it's determined state. There's more to this - GPU gets less voltage when it's getting warmer, thus reducing the ability for GPU to reach higher power levels. Everything would be great, if the device wouldn't start to throttle it's clocks at 45° degrees, which is basically nothing.
After seeing device's guts it's safe to state, that our phone has proper cooling done to it. Sure, it's basic, but with that much space and the price this phone is built for, you couldn't ask for better cooling.
So, what can you do to it?
There're several solutions.
-Deleting thermal-engine entirely and forgetting about the problem. Here's the thing, though - it's really dangerous, because not only you lose the ability to monitor your battery's temperature, you could cook your phone while charging. Charging throttling is a thing too, when phone slows down pulling current from a wall as soon as you are doing something intensive. It's a dirty fix with a lot of risks involved.
-Modifying thermal config tables. This way you could ensure device's safety while having optimal device's performance.
-Mounting hugeass cooler at the back of your phone or better yet - mounting cooler straight to the cpu silicon. Jokes aside, this is not recommended at all, unless you're insane and don't care about sacrificing device's size.
I'm actually thinking about making completely custom thermal tables and make them compatible with Magisk. Even if Magisk method wouldn't ensure enough confidence, I will make flashable zip for recovery flashers. Everyone's happy.
FAQ
-But the device has kernel level throttling monitor. That one works too, right?
-Yes, but it does not do anything related to cpu clock management and such. All it does is turning off your device entirely when undesirable temperatures are reached. Thermal-engine is what's monitoring temperatures and adjusting clocks when necessary. Kernel level throttling is there for additional safety, in case thermal-engine is not working properly.
-My device runs great. Why bother modifying what Xiaomi did?
-It's up to you to do anything with your purchase. If you are happy, it's fine, leave it as it is.
-I noticed hugely increased benchmark scores and games working smoother after deleting thermal-engine. Is that normal?
-Exactly. Here's your answer to what thermal-engine actually does. It hampers our device too much.
-When are you going to research this modification?
-As soon as I'm free from doing routinal things: school, job, home and such.
BONUS TIME!
Gfxbench 3 Manhattan 1080p offscreen scores for your reference:
With thermal-engine running: 15fps
Without thermal-engine running: 23fps
REMEMBER, I'M IN NO WAY RECOMMENDING YOU TO DELETE THERMAL-ENGINE. IF YOU DO THIS, IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY WHEN DEVICE STARTS COOKING OR CATCHING FIRE. THIS IS SORT OF MY OBSERVATION OF A PROBLEM OUR DEVICE HAS. EVERYTHING IS AT OUR OWN RISK!
theres currently 2 thermalmod magisk module for our device, one is jthermal and the other is thermalx, currently using thermalx and it essentially removes thermal throttling, highest temp i got was 48°c playing pubg at smooth+extreme settings at noon.

I do not recommend using these mods! They completely remove the limits, leaving the phone vulnerable to overheating during charging.
but here is the link JThermal, I took the file I downloaded from telegram and uploaded it. To install use MAGISK!

Thanks! I got a hold of the thermalX one. Registered on 4pda and downloaded it.
Install ACCA from magisk and you'll be able to control max temperature while charging

Yesterday I flashed this module on latest xiaomi.eu beta and everything is working perfectly. Maybe it works only with MIUI based ROMs?

It "works" on any rom, but it is not recommended, it lets your phone get really hot, and it destroys the battery life

Yes, I know. Everything in life is a trade. I'm willing to lose some battery lifespan for performance. Not being able to play games @60fps is unacceptable.

Possible. I was at PE 10 Beta. Maybe it's because of the SDK differences.

Most of the custom roms reuse already available binaries and stuff from MIUI, unless dev is clever enough to transition fully to CAF, so it should work, I think.
From what I've seen, MIUI is not any different when it comes to thermal configurations. Both of them use the same binary and same configs (they might be changed, not sure)
