[Q] Nexus 6 durability without case - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

2 falls on hard floor with thin of layer carpet and 2 falls on a rubber car mat, plus the tap on the desk to my top left corner off the phone and pulling on the USB cable while plugged to my phone accidentally when picking the phone up from a surface, will that have damaged my phone in anyway if there is no visible damage?

The insides of the phone are solid state, taking a bump won't have any impact on it unless it is hard enough that you can see the damage. The first thing to go is always the glass screen. The glass is *especially* vulnerable on Nexus 6, because it bubbles out at the edges. If you drop it onto a hard surface in a way that it could land a bit off face down, the screen WILL be the first part of the phone to touch the ground and stands a very high chance of breaking. Other phones tend to have at least a small lip of the plastic frame around the screen protruding to protect it. I suggest a rubber protective case like a Ballistic Maxx.

The only visible damage would be the screen. If you don't see anything then you're fine.
Be more careful with your phone and invest into protection if you plan on preserving your investment. I recommend a tempered glass protector as it'll protect your screen while maintaining the same screen feel.
Add a case in there for back and side protections. I'd recommend something not bulky but enough to protect your phone such as a ringke fusion or ringke max, ringke slim if you want the slimmest case.

ok cool so if i dont see any type of damage at all im good? my case comes today. i also slightly tapped it against my gate lock accidentally and it fell and hit the side of my car almost falling between the seat and my center console.. but there is nothing, no scratches, nothing. i just get so paranoid cause i just bought it and i feel like just cause it got lightly hit or fell twice there is no point of having a case anymore cause i feel liek it wont count..

Your phone is fine, the worst that can happen is that your phone physically gets scratched / scuffled. The Ringke case also comes with a screen protector but its plastic and not very good. It collects a lot of oil.
I recommend visiting the tempered glass thread and then see what glass you like. It'll cost around ~$10 and depending on whom you get it from they'll give free replacements.

what if it fell hitting the backside instead? does putting the sim card tray the wrong way for 1 second like not going all the way in but inserting it then realizing it was the wrong side. does that mess up the tray or slot?

Aluminum Metal Case

I received yesterday my protection for Leo. I share with you the results of this:

For shipping this protection:

Thanks for sharing; however you would have been better off posting in the Cases thread where we all go to see what's happening in the world of cases.
WB
Agree with above poster, can a mod fix this?
Nice case! ive also ordered 1 last week at PDAir, the 1 without a screen, so easy acces, but fewer protection. I am hoping its more solid so i can put it in my back pocket without getting a red face everytime i realize i accidently put it there...
When did you order it and did it took long (i am eager to get mine, but now hope is gone till monday or tuesday...)
I disagree.
The "Cases" thread is too long and too complicated for discussing any one specific case.
Anyway I ordered mine just a moment ago and would very much like to hear how quick was the shipment, how snug is the fit and how reassuring the neoprene feels
It's a shame they opted for a plastic screen protector instead of either a window-less aluminum door or a transparent cover that lets you work with the touchscreen.

mohasea,
How thick is the plastic cover over the screen?
Does the plastic cover flex?
Do you think the plastic cover would prevent the screen being cracked if dropped screen down on ummm concrete?

I totally agree, wish they had a solid aluminum front door instead of the window cut-out covered in plastic or the other option they have of no plastic window cut-out. I would order one now, even not having my Leo yet, just because the front door was solid aluminum.
I am going to contact PDair and see if they would leave a few front doors out of the cnc cutter and have a full cover aluminum
Would you like one too, Duperman ?
Thank you,
Monnie
I have ordered an open screen case despite it may not fully protect the screen. HD2 has a glass screen and it is hard enough against scratch as what has been in iphone.

Anyone got theirs yet?
Would love to see some detailed photos and a review of the case pros/cons

I'm debating whether to go with their leather flip case or this aluminum case...
I got this case and immediatly wished there was no plastic screen on the front door. So, I held it over some boiling water for about 2 mins and and then used my thumb nail (not kidding it was easy) to pry the plastic from the metal. The whole lot peeled off easily, i replaced the foam into the case and BAM perfect case. (be careful not to rip the foam, but if you do it will still stick back. also the foam stretched out a bit but pushed back into shape no problem. TIP: Work from the front side of the case, wedge your nail into the seem and loosen it all the way around. If it starts to get tough again, hold it over steam for a while longer.
Also.. when the plastic was still inplace and the case door was closed, there would be random screen presses and that was not cool, however now that the plastic is out, i can leave the door closed, press when I want too, AND there is no random case presses
I know this sounds like a poor fix, but it worked awesome and it looks like it was SUPPOSED to come this way.
Now all i need is for my zag shield (front only) to show up and im perfectly protected (minus water damage dammit)
awesome case guys im not kidding. you dont have to put the nubbin on in the back either so it doesnt add much bulk to teh phone. good luck yo.
Got mine too and I use the black open faced aluminum for local use and insert the whole unit;
aluminum case and all into the Maxpedition "Rat" wallet for carrying on belts etc.... http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/...&idcategory=11
Like it alot....
FWIW
well, do not kill me if I say so .. but it is ugly as hell.
I do not say that it does not protect the phone, or the the finishing it's not ok .. but from a slim phone with a huge screen, it looks like a bullet proof brick with a screen.
The whole idea of an elegant smartphone it's gone.
Small question: what do you hate about the original leather case?
It is elegant, slim easy to use and protect the phone in normal use conditions or small accidents.
Capdase Alumor Metal Case
Bought this silicon w/ aluminium backcover case by CAPDASE in Hong Kong, adding a more "solid" feel over the pure silicon case. It comes with a CAPDASE screen protector as well.
http://www.mobimega.com/capdase-alumor-metal-case-htc-hd2.html
Beware that the silicon case may not glue well to the aluminum backcover (I think it's the factory problem) which may leave a small gap between them when you put the phone in. I have to apply some glue to fix that myself. Apart from the case is nice and not too costly.

Hi,
I am seriously thinking about ordering one for my Desire (A8181).
But what I'm not able to find, is how it works. I mean, you seem to describe the case as a silicone skin, with a metal plate sticked to it.
I thought it was more like a silicone skin with another semi-case to "clip" over the silicon....
Can you confirm if I am right or wrong?
And can you post multiple angles pictures?
Thank you, it would be much appreciated!
thanks but
so uglly
Ohh Great!
Thanks for the pictures! To me is one of the best cases i've ever seen.

Looking for a case? Get the otterbox.

I'm on my 5th day with the case, the case provides the best protection for drops and scuffs but does have a few downfalls.
Pros:
-Sleek Design, doesn't add bulk like Bodyglove.
-Waterproofs and protects ports.
-Scratch proof screen protector like ZAGG.
-Easy install and removal.
Cons:
-Screen protector installation was botched 3 times, if you mess it up like I did by getting dust on the sticky side run it under cold water and apply it wet then remove air bubbles and water with a rag.
-Screen protector bends too easy, a corner is bent upwards.
-the silicon sections of the case collect alot of dust.
-Notification light blocked if its sitting down flat.
-No grip on surfaces like body glove.
I got it for $25 on newegg including shipping. No regrets.

In general, soft silicone rubber attracts dust due to static and then holds onto it. The Otterbox has the interior silicone liner that shows around the edges of the snap-on outer hard case.
If you're the type that carries the phone in your pocket, the rim around the screen will tend to grow hair. If you carry it in a holster (I have a generic Case Logic one meant for a Blackberry), you shouldn't have an issue.

Ah, yes I also had this issue with the body glove case. I don't have an issue right now though with the Otterbox.
For the dust issue there is a really easy fix, rub it off with your fingers it only takes a few seconds. Its a minor annoyance but nothing that makes the case not worth it. So far everything has been great with the case.

I don't actually OWN the otterbox, but I do want one.... time for an ebay search
I have had my otterbox case (commuter) for my hero for a month and a half now and love it. The case was kinda a bit thing for me as I work at a pizza joint (where we toss our own skins and make our own dough) so flour everywhere is a huge part of everyday for me. Flour has not been nice to my phones in the past completely plugging up virtually every hole available on my phones. So huge selling points for the otterbox was the cover over the headjack and usb port which work like a charm. It does collect dust in the corners but much better to have it collect there than where it can do harm. with a good screen protector on I can cover the speakers from flour also. The case feels natural in your hand and more like a part of the phone than something bulky covering it. It comes in two parts and its easy to take apart yet never comes apart with out you removing it. I pull it off and clean the small build up dust and flour every couple of days and it looks brand new again.
Well thats my review of the case. Oh yeah, one more thing for people who want one, I got mine from amazon.com shipped for $25 flat. So just incase your like me and kinda lost faith in ebay or what have you $25 on amazon is a good deal considering both otterbox.com and the sprint store sell these cases for around $50
The Otterbox Rocks!!!
I mean it!! Ok, let me tell you why!
Ive been skateboarding for a longtime and the things I've done to phones you wouldn't believe!
Ever since I got this otterbox I've thrashed my hero quite a few times from dropping it off my lap getting out of the car, falling on it from takin a crash on my board2, falling off the top of the car.
& it sat in a heavy ring of water for about 30 mins....I had no idea..lmao. Needless to say no water damage to the phone it self. Every opening ie covered and with a full scale screen protector you can make the phone look brandnew anytime you want.
I highly recommend this case! It's protected my phone ALOT!! I still have it

Picked mine off ebay for 13$. Seems to be good. Got a piece of something under the screen cover and I have a little circle off screen so no big deal. If I put the phone in my jean pocket it is covered in lint when I remove it =) Little tape or some rubbing and it all comes off.
This is my first rubber case for a phone I have owned and I have to say its pretty nice. Full functioning usb, volume, headphone jack, lights and camera while protecting the phone... cant really ask much more than that right?
Had my Otterbox case (Just Impact not Commuter) for about a week now, absolutely thrilled with it. Fits better than my wifes generic brand case, Screen protector is great, even after one failed attempt. Only gripes I have: Picks up any dust or lint or anything extremely easily. Grabs onto my jean pockets a bit too much, pulls them out a little bit. But those small complaints aside it's a great case and a great deal considering the screen protector is included.

[Q] How do you protect your nexus? Case, pouch, invisible shield, nothing

Just was wondering what people have been using to protect their N1s now that its been out for a while, and how has it held up. I like the look of the N1 on its own without cases, and was thinking of using the little pouch that came with the box with no other case. Is this a wise move?
I have a case on my phone and an anti-glare screen protector (don't get anti glare it ruins the screen's look and colors) the reason I don't use the pouch is it gets annoying to take the phone out of my pocket with the pouch on then have to remove the phone from the pouch.

The slip case that came with the phone
Seidio Innocase works for me. See the XDA Nexus acessories section...
I've got an Otterbox Commuter series case that I use when I'm on "business" trips or at other times that my phone is likely to be handled roughly. That case is no joke. Actually, I would probably use that case all the time if I didn't use my car dock every time I drive. It takes a bit of time to pull the phone out of the case several times a day. I generally just use the slip case that came with the phone. Does a good job of fighting off scratches, and is still easy to remove so I can install the phone in a dock in just a moment.
Just a screen protector, I have used cases/covers etc, and always end up coming back to just nothing I like the slim feeling
I like the slim look also, thats why i think im going to stick with the little android pouch that came in the box. Just hope it doesnt cause any black marks on the sides or anything. Previous owner of the nexus said he never used a case but made sure nothing else was in his pocket and the phone looks brand new with no marks anywhere.
On one of my other N1s there are some dust particles under the screen on the bottom left. 1 of them is big enough to look like a dead pixel when the screen is on, the rest are not noticeable. Anyone have a easy fix to get rid of the dust? That one particle is starting to annoy me.
Ever since I lost the neoprene case, I have been going commando.

I do similar: when I'm traveling, I put the N1 in my Otterbox Commuter case and enable the PIN the lock. Otherwise, no case and no PIN.
A gel skin for me.
I put a screen protector on it to cut down on sweaty fingerprints during the summer, otherwise nothing. I've had mine since it came out for ATT (march?) and it's still perfect. Just keep keys and change in the other pocket.
i'm using a silicone slip on protector. i'm too scare i'll drop it without it otherwise i would go commando but i have nerve damage in my right hand so my control over parts of my hand are sub par compared to normal people
my ulnar nerve was severed by glass and repaired but i still do not have full function of the minor muscles in my hand and only have partial feeling in the pinky/ring finger and that side of my hand so thicker phones are more comfortable in my hand and the super rubber grip around the whole thing makes it very hard if not impossible for it to slip out of my hand.

I bought a XOskin screen protector and also their carbon fiber back protector. Used the N10 with the protective film for several days but then removed it. I was thinking about returning the carbon fiber skin beccause it's too smooth compared to the rubberized back of the N10.
After just a few days of usage, what little tackiness the rubberized had is gone and it's fairly slick. I'm not about to clean it with whatever every few days to bring back what little grip it provided. I may slap the carbon fiber skin on after all.
Uh.. I have a hairline scratch in the corner and i still had the factory cover on and babied it. Gorilla glass doesn't protect worth crap.

I decided to raw dog it, too, and see what happens. I've put protectors on every portable device I've had since...well, almost ever. But, when I got a replacement Galaxy Nexus in July, I never got around to putting a protector on the screen. Despite being some off-brand "fortified glass", it's totally unscratched. I take some care to avoid scratching it (nothing else goes in the phone pocket) but I don't carry it in a any kind of case or pouch. Since my Nexus 10 will be treated even more gently (i.e. not living in my pockets), it should be fine without a protector.
If I'm wrong, I'll put a protector on my OLED retina tablet in a couple years.
I've also been using my Galaxy Nexus with "fortified glass" (tempered, but not Corning Gorilla Glass) since the device was released (a year?) with only the 2 part Incipio case that Verizon Wireless sells for it (silicone liner, hard shell around it) - glass completely unprotected. I put the phone in my pocket (pants, shirt, jacket, etc.) every day, use the phone a LOT, have taken it to the beach (generally throw it in a ziplock bag), put it in my backpack, etc, etc. Not single visible scratch on it -- and I'm a stickler for this, as little flaws somehow always manage to grab my attention more than they deserve. Not saying that it's bulletproof by any means - but with reasonable care, my phone with bare glass still looks brand new. The N10 has Gorilla Glass 2 -- again, not impervious, but should hold up quite well to normal wear and tear. I enjoy the bare glass SO much more than the slightly rubbery feel and drag of a protector that it's worth a bit of extra care for me so I can get away with a bare screen.
I have the full body protection. Was a bear to get on, took 2 hours of my time to get all the pieces on and it did not go smoothly. I used to think I was pretty pro at putting wet application protectors on but this is a HUGE device and getting big vinyl film pieces wet and then onto the device without parts folding over and sticking to itself, etc was a night mare. I even messed up the front protector. Loads of bubbles everywhere after over a week. Not BSE's fault at all but I told them of my situation at the same time that I noted my N4 protectors did not have a proximity sensor cut out and they sent me a new full body kit for the n10 for free with my n4 screen protectors. Great customer service!
Can someone who has the full body protector, installed, post some pictures? I would love to see what a device looks like properly installed! I saw the video for XO and they aren't nearly as hard because, well, they aren't really full body protectors. They have one piece that protects the clam shell for the most part in the back but that is it. All corners and sides are completely exposed. Maybe this is good, as there's that nasty edge seem feel from the little individual pieces, but still. If I can't master the full body kit installation this, I'll just rock it with the front screen protector from BSE and order a dry carbon skins back cover from XO. Those dry carbon things are really really easy to install... you can even peel them off and re apply them on another device and it will stay. Loved that type of protector on my Galaxy Nexus. They are not as poor feeling on seams either.
Nevertheless... can someone please post pictures?

i want to ask if anyone still use the pre-installed screen protector? is it good enough to protect the phone from any drop ? is it strictly recommend to change it with something branded model or is it good to go ?
can someone share with us his experience with this.
i like it because totally fit with the screen and almost invisible.

I'm still using the original since receiving the phone in October. I would not trust it at all for drop protection. It is good for scratch protection, but drop it face down on a pointy rock and it will be game over.
As a minimum I would suggest a case for some drop protection at the corners and for the cameras, to keep the screen from hitting a flat surface directly, but again, anything that digs into the screen from a drop, even a pebble, is probably going to end in tears.
Maybe tempered glass would help in the worst case scenario.
BTW, I bought a few cases for the phone and have ended up using the included clear case. Half the battle with safety and protection is to not drop the phone in the first place. This case has good grip so the odds of a fall are limited.
I only have the Note now because my S10+ meet an untimely end when I temporarily went case free and it slipped from my fingers like a wet fish and smashed the screen, including the OLED display.

Don't expect any screen protector to protect from a high impact drop.
You need a good case for that. The screen protector's main function is to protect from marring and scratches.
Every little bit helps though; the 10+'s factory screen protector soaked up a lot of the impact from a hit to the curved portion of the screen when it fell onto a jagged angle aluminum edge from 2 feet. No damage... it was only 2 days old
Glass is a strange material that seems to bend the rules of physics. The laws of hydraulic fluids apply to some of its behaviors.
Don't expect glass to behave like a solid... because it's not.

Do you still recommend the Zizo Bolt for drop protection and shock absorption?

I'm still using it. My drops are usually onto concrete and most have been about a 2-3 foot drop maybe 4 feet max.
Though I rarely use its belt clip that adds another layer of drop protection if you need it. Never have broke one yet. Currently on my second Bolt case as the first was retired because of repeated hard corner hits. Didn't want to chance it.
It has a lot of nice features. I use the kickstand all the time especially to hold it by when watching vids.
It's easy to hold on to sort off sticking to your hand almost. Zero hand drops to date.
I occasionally disassemble it for cleaning; it stays surprisingly clean inside the case*. No static dust attraction; doesn't attract dust or grim. In spite of it's very textured surface can be easily with ammonia water and an old toothbrush if it really gets mucked up. It's a keeper.
Still using the Gorilla IQ Shield I put on back in June. It's been very long lived for an inexpensive wet apply urethane screen protector. It's proved to be unexpectedly durable and low maintenance.
Lol, I have 3 more. The most I do is clean it it with a dry microfiber cloth, moisten if needed.
So far zero damage to the 10+ in spite of the somewhat hostile environment which it calls home.
*I continue to use a stretched pieces of teflon tape along the two side rails which seals and protects the frame rails/corners nicely. I simply replace it with new each reassembly. Slightly overlapping the screen helps keep its corners from being pulled up when putting on the case as it's a tight fit.
Once the second shell of polycarbonate is snap into place there's no way the phone can slip out even in multiple impact falls (lol, I "tested" that too).
I still have the pre-installed screen protector on the N20U with a Samsung clear case cover. Also place the phone in a Reiko wallet case for extra-extra protection.
Don't think the pre-installed screen protector will protect your phone if you drop it, though. I plan on replacing the pre-installed screen protector with a Zagg screen protector soon.
Noticed some scratches on the edges of the phone and nearly went ballistic. Forgot that it still had the plastic still on it. lol.

Go with a wet apply vs Zagg. The IQ Sheild is better; easier to apply with no bubbles and very durable.
Had QC issues with Zagg; backing pads weren't properly scored and refused to release.
Imagine the mess that made, twice.
Overpriced junk.
Thank you for your recommendation for a screen protector, @blackhawk!
