What can I do with the Edge display? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Is the frequent contacts all I can do with the Edge display? I thought there were music controls. Does the ticker app only work with the screen off?
So far I'm highly disappointed with a feature with so much promise.

Night clock is pretty nice. Also the curvature just makes everything "pop" which I really have been enjoying. There's not much more than that, perhaps it will have some fun usage in the future but it's mostly "bling" and you should have known that before ordering one as it's been widely discussed before launch.

Like the above, did you not actually look into it? Why did you think there were music controls? That was never discussed anywhere, not a single article on the S6 Edge claimed it could do that.
Regardless, it's a brand new phone. Give it time. Right now it's limited to a handful of "edge apps" in the Galaxy store, but the phone is four days old. More will come.

I researched the Note Edge than this one. I just figured it would have some of the same features as the Note Edge. Why have a phone with 2 edges that do less than the phone with one edge?

Of course, but the edge can still be used in one fashion or another. Right now it has the quick access to contacts, but apply that same concept to media keys or something else and suddenly you've got a winner. Or just allowing third party development of screen off functionality.

Thanks for replying guys. I'll just wait and see what they come up with.

There are a few apps out there that I absolutely enjoy with the edge.
Smart task launcher
I have 6 hot spots set yo on the right side of the screen with contacts, bookmarks and apps
Edge color notificationI use this for incoming calls like edge lighting but can be used with any contacts and can change colors to whatever
smart launcher pro
It's a home replacement I like the app drawer pulls out from the left edges
There are more out there bust just for starter this is what I am currently using on a daily basis

How did you find those apps?

LOL

Left myself open for that. I see now that the launcher thericksonebay was talking about has functions that slide out from the side, not that are specifically created for the screen edge. I'd be cool if I could just get a sports ticker, or maybe move the notification bar from the top to one side.

With Action Launcher 3 you can setup shortcut gestures. I swipe left to emulate Gnow launcher. You could have it pop open your app. You can also set "far edge display" and you literally have to peel it from the side of the screens.
Only launcher that got me away from Gnow. Highly recommend it.

The worst thing about this phone other than only 16GB is the on screen buttons :\

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Vha62lcGSgs
I mean seriously watching this video the buttons don't even vanish when you're in an app. I mean seriously how did Google think this was a good idea? Means you just hit them all the time or you have to be really careful where you touch and they don't change to which way you hold the phone.
How hard is it to A. Use that massive bottom part of the Bezel with Hardware buttons or B. Have some kind of gesture to hide them? I don't care if there is some rooted app out there, it needs to be standard, I just don't get how Google have overlooked this. People keep making a case that software buttons are better because you can change them....... have they ever changed? They've been the same standard design since I started using Android and whocares if they change in the future? I'm using my GS2 and the buttons work fine, just because they look different doesn't mean they have less functionality.
this may come off as I'm defending the Nexus 4 mindlessly but I'm not a huge fan of touch screen gaming. The whole reason I got the Evo Shift instead of a higher end phone was for the keyboard so I could play my games the way I like. I actually just bought a PS3 controller for my phone but I have to wait until Sixaxis Controller updates for 4.2. Though of course it doesn't work with most app store games, but I don't really enjoy playing those anyways

This is not a Google problem, this is an ap developer problem. They can design the game to function like you want but they choose not to. Blame them, not Google.

The whole point is to create the "physical button feeling" yet have them flexible for different apps. I think its a great idea! Physical buttons are annoying and are locked into doing only one function. Getting rid of the navigation buttons is like telling apple to get rid of the app dock at the bottom of their phone..... that's the way it was designed for the majority of users. If you don't like it then find a way to change it....you can its Android.
Dude chill... the software buttons are just another method like capacitive touch buttons..just incorporated into the screen. jus look at the specs of the nexus 4 as it has a 4.5 inch screen... if u cant live with that and want a bigger screen then fine move on and get the one x+ or something that has 4.7 inch screen plus capacitive touch buttons.unless you want THEM to disappear in an app too...
If we are going to complain about button placement can we not start with developers persistence with placing menu buttons at the top of most apps! They either have long fingers or small phones. I found this annoying on my SGS1 and very annoying on my Note 2, for obvious reasons. IMO Boat Browser is one of the few browsers that have placed the menu and navigation buttons in a sensible place.
I'm actually a big fan of the software buttons. This is one of the reasons I changed from the OneX to the Nexus4.
There are so many more interface possibilities with the software buttons, and as mentioned earlier the software devs need to make their apps more aware of their presence.
I haven't had to used on screen buttons with my gnex for about 10 months now and same with my Nexus 7 since I got it. There's a way to remove the on screen buttons by modding the res-framework apk. It's as simple as finding the option and and changing it then recompiling the new apk and pushing it to your phone.
Not sure if it's still this simple since I haven't had to do it for a while now that there are a few roms with the option to remove the Nav buttons. I would try if I had the Nexus 4 but that might not be for an while now.
I'm sure this feature will be included in nexus 4 roms too just be patience. I'm the meantime you can check out LMT, its a nav button alternative that uses pie menu that disappears when not in use.
If done right, the on-screen buttons are actually great.
If there are no dedicated buttons. they could either make the screen bigger, or remove the bezel on the bottom of the device, making it significantly smaller.
Also, there needs to be an option to hide them manually whenever you want, whether the application supports hiding the buttons or not. I know that there are such features in CM10 and other custom ROMs, but this needs to be a default feature on any device with on-screen buttons.
I like the buttons and they are not visible when viewing full screen video. That to me is when I care most about the screen space.

A lot of us like the onscreen buttons. If you don't, get another phone. Most don't have them. Those of us that like onscreen buttons have like 2 options, you have 100000. If Google puts capacitive buttons on the next Nexus because of whiners like you, I'm gonna be really upset.
I would have preferred hard buttons and a full 4.7 screen. Similar to the One X. There are only 3 phones with on screen buttons. Most game devs are gone make thier games for the biggest market which is hard button phones.

So am I. It makes navigating through the system easier and a lot smoother. Just like the multitasking icon, you don't have to press and hold like in the galaxy s phones for example. Also OP, the software keys disappear when you watch a vid, YouTube etc.... And you mentioned that they should use the bottom bezel, well that's where the notification light is.

Note 3 + GG user trying out the Sony SW2

So Sony just released the SW2 watch in the US, and I picked one up today at my local Sony retail store.
First impressions when compared to the GG, is that it is much lighter! I find both equally comfortable, but the Sony loses out on style points. The GG just looks impressive for any kind of watch. My only gripe about the GG is that it's not comfortable to wear while typing on a keyboard. I find the speaker clasp just too big and it digs into my notebook. The sony with the smaller rubber band does not have this problem.
As for the SW2 itself - the screen does not compare at all to the GG. It's a very old looking low res screen; but you can view the time w/o having to lift the watch to your face--the screen is always on--just not backlit, until you press a button.
The Sony comes with an assortment of apps to download, but I found that a lot of the ones I want outside of the sony provided ones are paid apps, and by some third party in which I question the quality. But there is enough free stuff to keep me occupied. The stock sony email push app to the phone does not work on the N3. This is something I will figure out, since I WANT email on my phone dammit.
Everything else syncs well; sms, facebook, calls.. There's even a neat app in which I can control my phones shutter using the watch. Not bad at all. The music player app works too.
Obviously the integration between the N3, and GG is second to none, but the SW2 comes very close. I also like that if I ever move to another manufacturer phone, I can take the watch with me.
Overall, my first impressions were very positive for the SW2. I'll keep using it, and see if I miss the GG camera, Svoice, and Svoice txt replies.
If you have any questions, let me know!
I can see the gg overtaking the sw2 once there are more apps available and firmware matures - especially with nicer screen and decent specs in general. Battery life will hopefully get better with time too
Especially since the gg runs a full version of Android and can thus run apps locally on the watch itself.
Imo gg will overtake all now that we can root the gg and have a system dump to play with as well as a stock recovery that hopefully can be replaced with a custom recovery to make mods and themes. Just my 2 cents lol

I think i'll keep both watches, as they are indeed different enough. I like that the SW2 is waterproof. It's cheap enough @$200 to just play around with it.
I find myself using my watch all the time now to receive phone calls and talk on it. If I'm working on something I can leave my phone in a room and just use my watch for everything now.

if so what can you do extra
what customizations can i do to it
how big is the memory

should be compatible with your S2, can control music player via the watch (and more options if you use Music Boss). Read text. And some apps.
So far it's not rootable so there is not much you can do with it.
If you are looking for something to root/customize, then you might want to look at Gear or maybe the SmartQ Z, which is under the Xda->SmartWatches->Other. I don't have any personal experience with SmartQ, but so far it looks very interesting..for the $100 price.
Not rootable, but the sdk is free and quite extensive. So it is fairly easy to make your own apps and faces. There are some memory restrictions though and there are only eight slots for faces and apps combined, but the Pebble team could change that limit in the future
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Xperia Z
For customisation, there are practically an endless amount of watchfaces you can use to customise it with, and you can make your own. Hardware-wise the plastic model uses a standard strap so you can replace the straps with something more to your liking, and you can get skins to customise the look of the bezel.

No need to root it. It is a 99% open platform. As far as apps there are quite a few. My personal preferences though are:
Music Boss (Controls music playback and volume)
Pebble Dialer (Make and answer calls from Pebble)
Glance (Fairly detailed watch face with some extras)
Canvas (Let's you easily create watch faces from your phone with just about any data you want)
I find the pebble to be better than the over hyped Samsung Gear. Gear has too few apps and don't feel like having to root it and install extra apps on my phone to be able to use it with a non Samsung device. Not to mention the dirty looks you might get at some places when people realize you're wearing a gear with a hidden camera.

Recently I received a Sony Smartwatch 2 as a present. And, as much as I don't like disappointing on a present, I'm thinking of selling it away and getting a Pebble (the original). I only have a few questions regarding Pebble's usage (sometimes comparing it to Sony SW2):
1. How big Pebble is? (in comparison to Sony SW2, in case you used them both) SW2's height is about 3/4 of my wrist's width. The relatively sharp edges of SW2 seem to bi a little annoying too.
2. Can Pebble display custom watchfaces that contain extra information beside the clock? I thinking about a countdown timer, navigation information, musig info, etc. without having to push buttons. (similar to what metawatch does)
3. Has anyone tried to use Pebble (tied to an appropriate application) for sleep tracking? I'm mostly thinking of alarms that go off when it's best to wake up.
4. Can it control PowerAmp?
5. Can notification vibration patterns be configured, based on notification type?
Thank you!

I also had a Smartwatch 2 and returned it after getting a Pebble.
1. Pebble is quite smaller and more comfortable to wear, however the SW2 was not too bad for me about that
2. I'm sure it can show notification counts (missed calls, SMSs, mails), meteo and probably music, not sure about other things.
4. As far as I can read on Google, yes it can
5. Not natively, but probably you can do that if you let some external app handle notifications instead of the official one.

I highly, highly doubt it. Just like the gear vr for S6 even though the screen is smaller. This is a developer innovator edition. Gear VR2 will more then likely be a finished product.
You remember the first watch? It was horrible. Then the second one was halfway decent. Now the third one is nice and refined. So I'm sure by the time you upgrade (note 6) it should be prime time ready.

IMO For GearVR to be successful they need to make it support a few years worth of phones --- OR DROP THE PRICE to more like $49 or $99 at very worst if it literally is one and done, We replace our phones every one or two years max, shouldn't have to replace the GearVR in the same time frame IMO

No way to make an amoled screen with that pixel density without using Pentile right now. I agree that amoled screens with a pentile matrix don't make the ideal screens for VR setups as the black area between the individual pixels is larger than for regular RGB LCD displays, but the benefits outweigh the negatives though.

Expensive is the functional mass production business version of impossible
I hope "consumer ready" also means:
1. More codec support and other video player options
2. Youtube and other streaming apps also capable of viewing all 2D content and not just 3D.
3. A web browser. Set top boxes, Apple TV, Chromecast, etc, game systems and Smart TVs all have web functionality. A controller could be a basic interface and cover for most web content- just like the devices noted. It could also be voice controlled and the touch pad used as a mouse.
I am more cynical and think the real reason we see no browsers is Oculus and Samsung want to somewhat control what users stream and watch. If we had a full function browser, we could chose what we stream. I hope I am wrong, but the excuses about no browser from John and others with Oculus IMO is completely lame and insulting to average intelligence. I have below average intelligence and still it's insulting
Most of us do not care if it is a "3D" UI browser. 2D would be more than fine until a 3D one is made. Due to battery life, I would stick with the 2D one anyway.

AT&T S6 Active vs Edge - Active wins

I bought the Edge two months ago. Gave it a spin, got back from a canoe trip on the Buffalo River and exchanged it for the Active on the day the Active dropped.
So now I've had a month with each device.
Gotta say, as sexy as the Edge is... it's just too delicate. I felt like I might crack the screen if I stared at it hard enough.
The "Edge" features were cool but not so killer that I had to have them, kinda kitchy at best.
The Edge is gorgeous so putting it into a case was a crime.
Performance, camera, all that... awesome.
Memory leak issue caused the phone to be laggy but everyone's had that issue.
Rooting and Greenifying it took care of that.
Additionally, holding the Edge sans case in my hand, the edges are perceived as "sharp", just couldn't get used to the thin-ness (I know, weird).
The Active is light but solid in the hand.
The case (dark blue camo) has grown on me.
Having had the previous versions of the Galaxy, the buttons are fine and I do appreciate the "Active" button for short and long press access to key apps. Although, sometimes it triggers while in my pocket and starts my music app.
Performance is rock solid, quick and and since the OF3 update last week, not having the memory issues like before. I don't think this is completely resolved but it does seem much more responsive and not lagging after a few days of use.
It's water-resistant and that comes in real handy - I've now used it when I'm running (covered in sweat), trout fishing (slimy hands) or canoeing (splashed with water while taking photos!) without any concerns or issues.
Camera is so awesome, fast and responsive unlike any of the Galaxy S predecessors.
And the selfie cam's higher resolution is appreciated.
I do have the issue with the case "clicking" on the edges.
Now, if we can just get root, this will be as perfect a phone as you can get.
My two cents. Anyone else tried them both?
Package disabler is a pretty good compromise for not having root. Allows you to disable pretty much anything, no root required.AoN
I have tried both. And I agree the s6 edge is so sexy (especially in platinum) I do miss the fingerprint reader and the bottom facing speaker. BUT IMO the active is so much better. I got the all black version (the other colors were a bit too much for me even after owning the platinum s6 edge lol) the active feels so sturdy in the hand and isn't too bad looking. I love love love the water resistance, I've already taken a shower with it lol. I've still got the edge but found out it was financed so I'm working on getting my money back now.
Package Disabler from OSPolice - waaaay cool my friend, thank you for suggesting.
The few items I manually deleted plus the latest update and this big battery is giving me fantastic battery life.
I just ran Package Disabler and selected "all bloatware" and disabled 87 apps. Then I re-enableed the four or five apps I actually use.
Looking forward to even better results.
Thanks!

I have the blue came. The dark color is sharp and you cannot really see the camo until you hold it up close.
Listening to podcasts in a steamy shower toasted my first galaxy III. This Active handles it with no problem.
And I've dropped this thing a half do, enjoy times where I'm sure an earlier version or an uncased Edge would have show damage.
I'm officially an Active fan!

Just do not disable the Samsung account manager.
I see a Samsung Account. Is that the one? What does it do? I'm not using the Samsung account, I don't think. I do have s-health on so maybe I need that. Appreciate your input!

Yes that's the one, it allows access to all the Samsung content (theme store, Samsung app store). If you disable it, the only way to reactivate it is to factory reset the phone.
Package disabler is the shiz for unrooted devices!!

Google play store. It's a dollar fifty five for the paid version. AoN
Am I crazy or did it get pulled from the play store? I can't seem to find it, even using the above link.
Not sure, searching doesn't bring it up, but it's still listed (and installable) under my apps. AoN
The free version seems to be gone. But the link above still works. (At least for me.)

Huh. Maybe it did get pulled then.
I emailed the developers OSPolice and got a reply saying that the app will be available for purchase next week in the Play store. :good:
Package disabler still wouldn't disable my arch nemesis, att address book. Anyone else figure out how to kill that garbage?

As far as I can see disabling Sync (This has the same icon than the AT&T Address Book) has stopped the annoying AT&T Address Book windows while opening the Contacts App.
