At&t update - 9-25-2015 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

I decided to try pressing the update button and it actually said there was a update available. It is downloading right now. I was on the latest update before this.

Downloading now as well, 670.86 MB file.
Can anyone confirm yet that this is 5.1.1? Or something else?
--
I imagine they'll update this page with a changelog whenever they officially announce the update:
https://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB426710&cv=820
(Still only shows the August 10th Stagefright patch at the time of this post)

I confirm it is 5.1.1

Is there a way to reset the download timer?

You can try setting the date 1 day forward, worked for me.

I'm so surprised that AT&T released an update. Now if only there was a way to do what they've done with the regular GS6 on XDA and make mini updates for those of us still on OE2

Will there be a way to retain root and upgrade from OE2

I see the version change to 5.1.1 also, I heard RAW image support was going to be added to camera but I don't see that.

I get a error every time I try to install the update. Does anyone have any suggestions?

No, I think i remember back when every else got the updated they said RAW is support but you had to download a camera app that supports RAW. It wasn't added to the stock camera.

For the S6 there's a way by taking the ota .zip and working some magic, but I'm not sure if anyone has done it for the edge.

how much garbage bloot is on it though? Im rooted on 5.0.2 with a cleaned stock rom. I dont want to unroot and flash the update and loose root if there is a bunch of garbage installed.

About damn time!

If you are looking for a big change and a big reason to unroot and update. There isnt. I was rooted with 5.0.x for over a year. I loved it but got bored. I unrooted and went to stock 2 days ago and was going to root again until I saw this update today. It's snappy, clean fully of bloat but disabled a crap load of apps. It's OK but like I said if looking for a big change. Wait till 5.1.1 has a solid rooted rom first.

If you need to unroot and get to stock ROM you need to flash stock ROM in ODIN
Sent from my SM-N920C using Tapatalk

I installed the update yesterday and overall my phone runs MUCH better, multitasking is greatly improved and I've noticed I typically have much lower system ram usage than I had previously on 5.0.2. I did turn on Enhanced LTE and it still is draining my battery by quite a bit, I went to sleep last night at 59% and woke up at 36%, battery manager listed Cell Standby at 31% battery used. I also tried and was unable to enable UHQ Upscaler audio, not sure why that's the case. The option is simply greyed out.

You don't have to rename it if you're running stock. Just place it on the root of your sd card and get into recovery mode by turning the device off. Then hold volume up key while you power it on until you get to recovery. Navigate to update from external sd, then navigate to the file name and select it. It should update with no problems as long as you are completely stock.

You guys notice the new signal icons for 3G and 4G? Or the fact that the Samsung keyboard has auto correct (auto replacement) now in its settings? And it has built in emojis. In full color, system wide, and support newer iOS6 emoji. No more black and white or boxes (that I've seen). :victory:
That's just all I noticed so far. I'm sure there is a lot more to discover.

S Memo does not support the emoji on the Samsung keyboard (don't need it there anyway, so no big deal). The stock email app only shows them as black and white (no big deal there either).

How do you disable the automatic update? I stopped the update. Deleted the .apk using Root Explorer but I still get the notification that it's downloading the update. Perhaps I deleted the wrong .apk??? In any case, I stopped the update but now there's the stupid notification that the update's pending.
I'm not rooted at all and got that same update today. I went through the whole shabang, it restarted and said updated after the whole android is updating deal. Something weird happened after updating when I connected to Kies 3 for the first time ever. Its says "Your device is not supported to update firmware via kies" Current firmware version : PDA: MJ5 / PHONE : MJ5 / CSC : MJ5 (ATT)
Anyone else come across this?? Like I said I'm not rooted and completely stock
D'oh!!! I never froze or deleted anything to stop the update. I didn't care if I got notification or not. I just had the icon this morning and prompts to update. BUT WTH?!?! It forced updated on me. what's up with that?! It normally prompt me to update or postpone, but this time it says restart to update. The only thing to do was hit continue and that's it. I couldn't stop it or cancel it.

there might not be any other way; after all, 5.0 encrypts your entire phone, so one could assume the bootloader has to be locked for that to happen..

I don't see any setting to not check for updates like there used to be going back to froyo. How do you prevent an update being downloaded if you're not rooted?

In past TMO Samsung phones, custom recovery changed the Current Binary setting from Samsung Official to Custom. That alone disabled OTA updates. I suspect it's the same on the N4.Perhaps someone who rooted prior to the NJ7 update can confirm.

I am on the NJ7 and can confirm any update check comes back with the "custom software, no updates for you" message.
Well I returned the AT&T version and brought home a t mobile note 4.
What are your thoughts about taking the t mobile update. Can we still root and unlock the bootloader if we take the update

t mobile bootloader is already unlocked
and yes ,you can still root after you take the update; all the new roms are based on the updated firmware anyways..

Thanks brother. I thought I seen a couple people having trouble after the update.

its all good, super easy to root, to flash TWRP, and to flash a new rom...there are about 5 or 6 already, and they all run really well!

Just be sure to read the posts about s-health and private mode. If you can, don't use s-health until after you root and if you plan on using it, disable secure storage in wanam. Otherwise you're going to get some annoying lag.
Also if you're going to flash a custom ROM and want to use the fingerprint scanner, make sure you use the scanner on the stock ROM first. Folks are having issues on custom ROMs if they've never used the scanner beforehand.

Marshmellow exploits

When marshmellow comes out will anyone from here be working on an exploit for root? Is it just down to the locked boot loader or with a whole new OS is it possible for a new exploit to arise.
I'm not really sure if there will be ANY more development for this device.
All we can do is wait and see.
The only way I can see an exploit is if the one that was found for the AT&T galaxy s6 is made to work for ours.
i thought we were supposed to get marshmallow by now or today at least.

if you had the device from the get go you would have been able to take advantage of the exploit/root and development..
unfortunately with root only available on 5.0.2 development seems dead

Since marshmellow is a full reboot of the os I think there could be a new exploit

was just saying there has already been some development and your comment made it seem there never was lol
in fact our device was rooted very quickly once it was out so one can only hope it will be worked on..
keep in mind that MM has been out a while now on other variants

Yes, that's true but not all methods work with our devices.
Im just wondering since development fro 5.1.1 and 5.0.2 are long gone if there will be anyone working on exploits fro 6.0.1 like we have now

I don't think anyone really knows.
We can only hope.
I just really hope that work does get done. I don't want to find out that my less than a year old phone, that I got last August, is already getting kicked to the side of the road, and then driven over because development of root was harder than for other phones.

My only real concern is because of the boot loader lock down by Verizon is just going to shut down all development. There has to be a way to unlock the boot loader or there has to be an exploit found for us to get a root.

bootloaders have always been locked by samsung but vzw prevents us from unlocking it.. regardless its been this way for a while even on the s4 and prior.. nothing new.. MM doesnt really have much to do with it.. doesnt change the fact some bright person still needs to find an exploit to even root as always and i no longer expect bl unlocks on Sammy devices with Verizon

The only problem with MM is that a patched kernel is required for root or the device won't boot, trusted boot. So without an unlocked bootloader, no modified kernel will pass through this device. Unless an exploiter triumphs a new level.

sounds about right.. isnt this why chainfire now uses systemless root?
Sent from my SM-G925V using XDA-Developers mobile app
Well I think systemless root started as being a way to avoid problems with OTA updates failing because of modified system partition and also keeping Android pay working, then progressed to see it seems to me the most streamlined method. But as far as root goes he's made the installer patch the boot.img, disable forced encryption, and install in systemless mode. I went ahead and took the update because I'm fairly confident no one will feel like attempting a bootloader exploit for the S6. I just do all my tinkering on my 6p.
