[Q] Workaround for Helium Backup (non-rooted) with OS X 10.11 - X Style (Pure) Themes and Apps

Hi,
Helium Backup desktop app on my Mac acknowleges my device but the Moto X Pure (non rooted) does not seem to acknowledge it. It seems to be a know issue on Moto devices (problem with ADB on the moto side?):

Unsupported and Problematic Devices.
Any Motorola device - Helium is NOT available to Motorola devices. This is because Motorola phones have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism. Until this is fixed by Motorola, Helium will not work on those Androids. You can download Helium manually here: http://download.clockworkmod.com/apks/Backup.apk If you find that Helium does work on your Motorola Android, please notify me.
Moto MDM is no longer up to date and does not work. Has anyone been able to find a work around?

I used helium to backup my g4 and restore to my moto x pure. I had to change to ptp mode for a sec if I remember correctly. Using a PC though

Question about Helium

I'm very interested in this device but since I'll be purchasing through ATT and the bootloader is currently locked could someone check and see if helium app backup/restore works without root on this device?
it'll be the first time I buy a device before it's rooted and moving my app data is pretty important for me. Titanium backup is currently something I can't use if I move to this device.
It works.

Thank you. Pretty sure this is my next device.
It's a pain to use compared to tibu

Yeah, i've got both on my device as of now, but since I won't be crack flashing, as long as I can get it there i can cross my fingers for root down the road.
I found it didn't back every thing up.
Just replying here in case someone else finds this thread looking for more information.
My wife just got the Rogers Moto X (XT1058). Using the drivers suggested by the Helium app didn't work, even after a reboot. I downloaded the Motorola Device Manager directly from Motorola's Canadian website (no clue if the US one is the same).
Motorola Device Manager (Drivers)
After installing on Windows 8.1 and without even rebooting, Helium was enabled successfully when the phone was in Camera (PTP) mode.. Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for that - I'm in the US but your Canadian link worked like a charm

Backup app w/o root?

I've read that several applications (e.g. Carbon) claimed that it won't work on Motorola devices because something is broken by Motorola.
Can anyone comment? I am trying to do a backup before trying to root. Just trying a few backup-delete-restore does not provide enough confidence.
Thanks

Carbon is now called helium backup and works fine with the Moto X even without root.

Ah, I see. It says it requires a USB connection and desktop software. Does it back application data and restore like TB (something about restore the data for Google Play so that it can get updates)?
Thanks

I believe that it does backup and restore data. It requires the USB connection and desktop software only to initiate the backup. It actually backs the files and data up onto the phone's internal storage.
Tried Helium. It does work with desktop application running.
However, the result is not as good as TitaniumBackup. Some application does not seem to restore fully while others work.

A few app lost its settings. Nothing dramatic.
I've used Helium on a few occasions and it all failed to restore settings. The apps are: Go Power Master, JuiceDefender, Smart WiFi Toggler.
Is there anything I need to do on 4.4 to make this work?
I got the developer confirmation that Helium does not work on Moto.
Do we have any other options?
(With Helium) You also can't back up quite a few apps (e.g., AdAway, Spare Parts+, MLS Matchday, TripIt, etc.) so I had to root so I could use TiBu.
I doubt anything is as reliable and complete as titanium backup. But yes, you have to be rooted.

The problem now is that nothing really works for Moto X. (ADB backup claims to be but it's hard to manage -- cant' choose what to restore easily, for example).
Has anyone tried the below? Thanks

Not exactly sure what you mean? Unrooted? Then yes... Hard to get a proper backup.
Rooted, then there's lots of options. Again, TB being arguably the best.
Being a Moto x shouldn't have anything to do with it. Rooted, unrooted and OS version are the only factors.

The thread is about backup without root. I've not seen a solution working for Moto X.

As I explained. It's not going to be easy.... Or even impossible. Without root... There are things that can not be backed up. That's not a Moto x issue, it's an Android issue. You need root for many things to backup.
Any unrooted solution will be half assed. That's just how Android is. About the best alternative to titanium backup is a nandroid. But you'd have to do it often or lose data from last backup. Again.... Root becomes the issue.
What I'm trying to say.... Is without root.... You can't make a decent backup.
As far as I know.

Agree that something will be missing from the backup without root. The difficulty for Moto X is that solution such as Helium does not work at all. The author has said the problem is on Motorola devices and Motorola needs to fix it. I don't think that's going to happen. So I think Moto X (or other Motorola devices) are in worse shape compared to other Android devices.

I think overall.... Keeping in mind that xda type people are an extremely small percentage of phone owners... Most people don't know about, or care about backing their phones up. And for people like us, that know and care.... Well generally... We're rooted. Most xda types root and flash this and that anyway. Most.... Not all.

I used Helium Backup to move between Moto Xs just fine without root on either device. Certain apps don't support it but about 75% did and it worked great.

Do you mean just the app or including settings? Could you give some examples that worked?
Thanks

[Q] cloning a replacement Moto X DE from old phone

Hello,
I'm getting a replacement Moto X Develper Edition from Motorola, and I'd like to be able to clone the old phone to the extent possible. I have TWRP installed, but it's not clear to me that backing up through that will catch everything. I also have Titanium Backup, and motorola tools on my PC as well as the adt windows bundle as of july. Is it as simple as unlocking the bootloader on the Motorola site, installing TWRP and restoring a backup from the current phone? Thanks for your help.

How can I stop Pie Update notices?

I have three moto x4's that can't be rooted. I need to record telephone conversations for my work so I have to keep them on Android 8. I keep getting notices almost twice a day to upgrade to Android 9, and while I can choose "later" it is getting annoying and starting to interfere with my use of the phones.
I tried turning off notices for google play but that did not stop the notices.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent the notices from appearing?
I've since switched to a custom ROM, but I disabled the Moto update service when I was running stock Oreo and that stopped the notifications for me. Now, I did this on a rooted x4 using Titanium Backup rather than from the Settings app, but it's worth a shot.

cannot root because bootloader cannot be unlocked. cannot disable moto update service because it is greyed out
Here is a question:
Are these X4 branded or unlocked/open market?
I successfully unlocked bootloader on mine even after updated to 9
You need Linux with adb instead of Windows
Mac may do it too
The phones have locked bootloaders because they were amazon version.
Is there an anti-virus program that would at least prevent the update from downloading or installing unless I specifically allow it?

Moto G6 can't find previous device backups, need help

Got a Moto G6 yesterday and started to set it up but no matter what I do it says that no cloud backups are available. I have checked my Google drive and it shows that the device backup for my Moto G5 Plus is there. Does this have something to do with the fact that my Moto G5 Plus has Android 8.1 and my Moto G6 only has Android 8.0? if that is the case does anyone know how I can rectify the situation, as I have over 350 apps on my phone that I do not want to have to search for and re-download manually?
thank you to everyone in advance.
The reason the backups don't show up is for the exact reason you said. Google won't let you restore a cloud backup if the backup is running a newer version of Android. Imagine if one of the backed up apps was only compatible with Android 8.1 and above, but Google installed it on 8.0. So, unfortunately, the cloud backup won't ever show based on what I know.
