[OFFICIAL][Galaxy A Series] CF-Auto-Root (2015, 2016 & 2017) [UPDATE: 12/10/2017] - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Android Development

Check your device model! Settings -> About device -> Model number. See the third post for exact supported model numbers. If your device is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !
CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices (Galaxy S1, Galaxy Tab 7", Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, and many more) and has clocked over 13 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Stock recovery
Installation and usage
Flash the CF-Auto-Root package as PDA in ODIN (details on how to do that are in next post), and your device should reboot into a modified recovery (signified by a large red Android logo) and it will install SuperSU for you and restore the stock recovery, and reboot back into Android.
If you don't get to the red Android logo, boot into recovery manually ("adb reboot recovery", or boot while holding Power+Vol Up+Home).
Using this root increases your flash counter. You should run Triangle Away (see below) after rooting to reset the counter. Note that if you want to run custom kernels or custom recoveries, your flash counter will be set to 1 at every boot. Either configure Triangle Away to reset the counter at every boot (Play version only) or only reset the counter when you need to go into warranty.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Why isn't this just called CF-Root
The traditional CF-Root's included a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc) and were meant for devices that had a single kernel/recovery combination. CF-Auto-Root doesn't include a custom recovery and is meant for devices that have kernel and recovery separate (so you can manually install any custom recovery you wish). The Auto part comes from the fact that a large part of the process is automated (though it constantly needs adjusting)
Not included - Triangle Away
Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter after installing CF-Root. The flash counter keeps track of how many custom firmwares you have flashed, as this voids warranty. (No idea what this about ? Read up on it, you will want to use this !)
Not included - adb Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adb Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
NOTE: Before flashing, make sure you have enabled "OEM Unlock" from "Developer Settings" !
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold Volume Down+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practice!)
NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, boot with Vol Up+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!
You may now optionally want to install and run Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.

First of all, plz don't quote the whole post :/
Secondly, tripping knox means your warranty will void if you root your device, yup, CF-Auto-Root tool will trip the knox counter from 0 to 1 for forever, Official counter is 0. And once you rooted your device, the counter will always stay on 1.

CF-Auto-Root is the easiest and safe way to root a device, but unfortunately, you need to compromise with your device warranty.

I got my A800F rooted with SpaceX. Does this way also give a result with Red Notification on Boot "Kernel Is Not Seandroid" as well? and do I need to try this method too after I rooted my A8 earlier with SpaceX?

Well, CF-Auto-Root just released today for A800F, even i did'nt tried it yet on my device, so i don't know about this, i was used this root on my Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500) and i did'nt get any Red Notification on Boot "kernel is not seandroid" like warnings. Now you already replaced your kernel, so you don't need to try this method, but if you want to solve your "Red Notification" on boot, firstly you need to flash Stock Firmware, after that you can try this method. I hope you will not get any notification after that.

I will not use SpaceX Kernel now, if i want to root my device, i will root it with CF-Auto-Root only.

haha,, I see... Well this is my first time with Samsung device, so yeah I got confused and honestly worried when I got the red notification (since it is right on the first bootloader screen where the "Samsung Galaxy A8 powered by Android" screen appears, it has additional red notification on top left). And I'm still wondering if it could be removed somehow because I got that red notification, not red triangle or whatsoever it is...
I would try this method instead if only I got this news faster.

Samsung s3 mini blocked afrter failed root

Hi, after a failed rooting my s3 blocked, i tryed to put on the I9300XXALE8_I9300ITVALE7_ITV (i'm from italy), but now is blocked on the Samsung logo. Also when i go in download mode it says
Odin mode
Product name : GT-I8190
Custom binary donwload : YES (17 counts) (ye i tryed 17 times to fix it)
Current binary : custom
System status : Official
So i have some questions : Can i send it to assistance and they can repair it (with warranty)? , should i try to re download the I9300XXALE8_I9300ITVALE7_ITV file? ( i tryed with 3 versions of odin, with 2 of them it says : failed, with the newest it says : pass but it blocks on Samsung logo)
Or there is something other that i can do?
(sry bad english)
Are you flashing a i9300 firmware to a i8190?
No wonder why it doesn't work.

+1 Just find the ROM you want to install here http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=GT-I8190 then download and flash this http://download.chainfire.eu/448/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r5.zip and finally go and install this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu (or update if you have it installed after you flash the file above). I can root any phone with this simple method
NOTE : It doesn't matter which country you're from, you can flash any firmware you like, so why not be it the latest one available for your device (ANF3 at the moment)? You can still change language to Italian after flashing so there's really no difference between regions

I've never rooted a phone so I was just wondering how to do it like this? I've read some guides but it's really unclear still, one that I tried simply didn't work (the one where you flash CWR with Odin as the first step). Can you/someone tell me how to do this exactly, please? This is what I'm thinking atm:
1) If I already have the latest version I'm happy with, do I still need to download that version again or can I just go ahead with the SuperSU flashing part?
2) How do I in practice flash the SuperSU zip file? I currently have Odin v.3.0.7 and Minimal ADB and Fastboot installed on my PC. Thanks for any help!

If you don't have the latest firmware on your phone, download it from the link I gave (it's a .md5 file). Now go to Developer Options in your phone's settings and tick USB Debugging. Power off your phone. After that enter download mode on your phone by pressing power+volume down+home button while turning it on. You'll see a big message on your screen saying "Downloading, don't unplug target". Now plug your s3 mini into the pc and start Odin. Select PDA and find the .md5 file from before. Make sure that f.reset time and re-partition are unchecked and then press start. Once it's done odin will say "pass" and your phone will reboot. Congrats, you now have the latest firmware on your s3 mini
Now in order to root it, you need a custom recovery so let's go
On Google search "TWRP 2.7.1.1 Android-Andi xda" and download it from the attachments of his post (it's a .md5 file again). Again turn off the phone and enter Download Mode like before. Now do the same steps with Odin as the first time (with the firmware), but this time select the TWRP.md5 file instead of the firmware one in PDA section of Odin. Make sure all the options on the left are ticked/unticked exactly like the first time and hit Start. The "Pass" message should be displayed and the phone should reboot.
Congrats, you now have the latest TWRP Recovery on your s3 mini
And the last step - rooting it
Download the SuperSU.zip from the link in my post and copy it to your device's memory (internal or external). Now in order to enter Recovery Mode you need to turn off your phone and turn it back on by holding the power+volume up+home buttons until you see a "TeamWin" message on your screen. This recovery is touch based so just select install, choose the SuperSU.zip file and flash it. Reboot the phone.
Now you're rooted and on the latest firmware arty:
For future updates do the same. Just change the firmware .md5 file with the latest one available. The rest is the same xD
Man, I got tired ...

Download and extract G920TUVU1AOCG_G920TTMB1AOCG_G920TUVU1AOCG_HOME.tar.md5.7z
Older firmware HERE
Enter Download Mode
If you have Kies installed make sure it is closed (check the task bar) then plug in your phone and wait for drivers to install
Open Odin As administrator
You should see your phone under ID:COM (you should also see it has been added in message)
Make sure only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time is checked [ ]
Check AP [ ]
Click on [AP] And select the .tar file you just extracted (Only use AP Never use the others)
Wait for it to verify the MD5 then click [Start]
From here on out its all automated Odin will Flash the firmware then restart (dont forget first boot takes time)
If you get stuck in a boot loop go into recovery and do a factory reset (probably should regardless)
TWRP Files/flashing guide
Download your preferred choice of SM-G920Txxx-Untouched_Stock_Restore.zip HERE (Perfect 1:1 image unlike most roms)
Also download and copy superSu & twrp to your phone if you want root and custom recovery SUPERSU DOWNLOAD AND TWRP-xxxxxxx.zip
Copy SM-G920Txxx-Untouched_Stock_Restore.zip to Phone
Reboot into twrp
For firmware update do not wipe! skip to step 8. If you want untouched stock continue with step 4.
Click [Wipe]
Click [Advanced Wipe] (For full wipe stock restore only)
Select dalvik cache, system, Data and cache
Click the home Icon in the bottom left
Click [Install]
Select SM-G920Txxx-Untouched_Stock_Restore.zip
If you want root and/or twrp add UPDATE-SuperSU-vxxxxx.zip to the queue by touching [Add More Zips]
Repeat for TWRP-xxxxxxx.zip
Swipe to install [====>]
Install will now begin, pure stock: system, kernel, recovery, modem and rpm will be installed
After completion click [wipe cache/dalvik] (do not skip especially if you dirty flashed)
Swipe to wipe [====>]
Click [back]
Click [reboot system] (it might say no os but it is wrong you do have a os click restart anyway) [dirty flash will not have that problem]
If you want internal sd to be formatted do a factory reset in what should now be the stock recovery (if you didn't install the twrp zip)

Introduction (will be deleted some time in the next couple days)
Hello everybody, I will be getting this phone next month and look forward to expanding this thread to cover more than just firmware and odin. I have made a few guides and have been told how easy it is to understand and follow compared to others. With that in mind I figured I would just nip this in the butt right now before someone beats me to the punch.
Other than odin I will also for sure be making a back to pure untouched stock for twrp which will flash the following stock images: system, kernel, modem, recovery and if we never see a locked bootloader rpm. This will have to wait until I have the phone because I refuse to make work public unless I have tested it on myself first.
Other than this first part of the op, it should stay more or less the same for the next month. post #2 will have a sandbox for the future of the op then it will turn into a spot to post answers to commonly asked questions.

Would you have a link for the stock SM-G925T tar file for TMobiles S6 Edge 128GB By chance. A Donation on my part would be more than welcome to do for you. PS....I have no clue why I cannot open any link on sammobile web. So a mirror of any sort would be highly appreciated.

Ill look into it when I get some free time. Back when I had a s3 I was getting the tar balls without the phone plugged in and without the sammobile site, need to rediscover how I did that.

I have yet to throw one together because I like to test that stuff on myself first (not getting the phone until the first). But I have a member willing to test it so if you want in on that youre more than welcome. I should have it done tonight if time allows.
Which stock firmware is this? The original one is 3.5 GB.

Its still the original, just compressed.
You recommend JOdin for Linux users. But isn't that just a front end for Heimdall, and Heimdall has not been working on Linux for a while?

I thought it got updated, I'll look into it.
Thank you for this. I rooted my phone before I installed the OTA because the TMobile rep told me the latest OTA was bricking phones. Obviously, this was not true and I couldn't update the phone. All is well now.
Would going through the process untrip the KNOX flag from rooting and such?

No! Once it's tripped, it's done. No resetting it.
I tried using JOdin last night but it couldn't ever get my PIT file and never restarted my phone. It would just say that it failed. Can I use someone else's PIT file for the same model or does it need to be specific to my phone? SM-G920T is my model, if so.
I tried odin on a friend's windows computer and it never recognized my phone when I plugged it in in download mode. so i'm not sure what is going on. :/

G800F: FAILED ODIN Firmware Upgrade. All Fail.

So I wanted to upgrade my firmware to the latest build, and having vast experience doing so, I downloaded from Sammobile.com the latest firmware build for my G800F and Odin showed "FAILED" with no error reported on the steps screen. Tried again, FAIL, swapped cables, FAIL.
I tried loading other firmwares...and nothing. The Download mode screen reads:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-G800F
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUN OFFICIAL
SYSTEM STATUS: OFFICIAL
Secure Download: Enabled
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 1
AP SWREV: A1
ASV GROUP: 7
Any ideas or suggestions?

Try the Odin version contained in CF-Auto-Root
https://download.chainfire.eu/523/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kminilte-kminiltexx-smg800f.zip
Have no problem with G800F and this latest 4.4.2 (15 May 2015) G800FXXU1AOE3_G800FDBT1AOC1_G800FXXU1AOE3_HOME.tar
Use Odin with admin rights,
don't know if necessary, but clear your internal storage and wipe everything before flash with TWRP:

Had the same on G800H while flashed latest Stock ROM published on sammobile.. finally the following steps a working (in my case)
flashing the stock firmware through Odin (ignore failed message)
take off the battery and put it back in
boot into Download mode.
flashing the twrp recovery
Reboot normal
The rom is now updated and had no problems with it (flashed it on this way 2 weeks ago)
+1 Worked like a Charm thanks "mind"
But now I have a new issue....I'm getting "Warning. Camera Failed".... this is like...a nightmare....damn.

Hello this method worked for me. Thank you. May I ask what version of TWRP this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952600970 is?
I am confused as after putting this via ODIN I still have stock android recovery when pressing VOL+ & HOME & POWER
best regards

Galaxy S6 edge 5.1.1 Temp. Root Tutorial. (Doesnt trip Knox G925V locked bootloader)

New 6.0.1 and 7.0 root coming soon!
Back again as promised.
Required files:
-G925v OG7 Eng tar : (new Eng boot with faster bootup and stability improvement, reflash if you used the older version)
https:// mega dot nz/#!wJVmkJ7R!pWBoxloXf7m8PXGhGwkh_mfcFiIK-zAbioNs2Nbxszs
-Kingroot apk (king not kingo!)
Kingroot dot net
-Odin
Steps:
Run odin
Put phone in download mode
Add the tar to "AP" and click start
Device will reboot with new green writting on top left (ignore it)
Run Kingroot and click "try root"
It will be slow and lag around 16%, be patient and try to keep the screen from turning off. At 34% it will blast off to 100 and ull have root!
Enjoy
Recomended:
Have kingroot disable "knox"
Download root uninstaller and freeze "securitylogagent" to get rid of that annoying "unauthorized changes" message.
NOTE: This is TEMP root, youll have to repeat the process after every reboot to regain root.
NOTE TO DEVS: unpacking the boot image and modifying the ramdisk and trying to get permanent is an option, but DONT repack and flash with odin, it will cause dm-verity check to fail. Instead transfer the new boot.img to the phone and flash with flashify. I tested it and it seems to not cause a check failure.
New 6.0.1 and 7.0 root coming soon!

Confirmed working great on 5.1.1 my phone is rooted and boot time is faster and you can use hot boot to reboot without loosing root.
Are there any advances/news on a permanent root method on Lollipop 5.1.1 or on Marshmallow or Nougat? It would be great if there was a way to not have to re-root the phone every time it is turned on... I'm really thankful for your work!
Thank you !!!
Your tutorial help me root G925V 5.1.1, it's working for me. When you release root for 6.0.1 and 7.0 ?
Finally, thank you very much for help me...
Have a nice day. :good::good::good:

Galaxy s6 Edge + Verizon G928V temp root
Has anyone successfully temp rooted Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + Verizon G928V ?
My phone did accidental factory reset (blame the kid!) and I have been trying to recover my photos. Tried at least 15 different software and even paid for some. No luck. the images recovered are all from after factory reset. I have been told that booting will help recover images. Any inputs experts?

Hi and thanks for the tutorial! I followed the steps and successfully completed the odin part. However, my phone will not load past the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge page. There is the green writing on the top right hand. Do you know how I can fix it?
Looks like everything works! Now off to find a 6.0.1 root...
Hi, I followed your tut on downgrading my SM-G925V to 5.1.1 and also got root which was great, but I guess its pretty worthless as its only temporary til reboot, has there been any further progress on permanent root on the G925v? Great work btw
