Consequences of opening / unlock the bootloader - Sony Xperia X Performance Questions & Answers

Dear all,
since last week I own a Xperia X Performance (upgrade from Xperia Z3 compact). Unfortunately at least at the moment it seems there is no chance to root the device without open / unlock the bootloader. Fortunately the developer area has certain instructions to accomplish this, but...
As a consequence you loose the infamous DRM keys.
My question: is there by chance any proven / solid information what you actually loose if the DRM keys are gone?
- Which Sony Apps no longer work?
- Is it true that the camera app will take worse pictures? Or just an urban legend?
- Besides OTAs no longer work and you will have to use a flashtool or companion, anything else?
Any other consequences besides the lost keys?
It would be highly appreciated that someone could state some facts, not rumors...
Thank you.
Best regards
Michael

If you read the kernel thread you will find all answers.
The only thing is that OTA updates will not be an option.

Thx.
But all I can find here and on Sony's sites is that there might be some restrictions due to missing DRM keys - but no clear statement and facts.
Nevertheless, after release of Nougat I guess I will unlock the bootloader (if then it is still possible and kernels / root is still available)...

Mights that are mentioned on the developer sonymobile site:
Certain pre-loaded content on your device may also be inaccessible due to the removal of DRM security keys. For high-end devices running recent software versions, for instance Xperia Z3, the removal of DRM security keys may affect advanced camera functionality. For example, noise reduction algorithms might be removed, and performance when taking photos in low-light conditions might be affected. The secure user data partition may also become inaccessible, and you will not be able to get any more official software upgrades if you unlock the boot loader.

There has been made a workaround for all of these things. The only thing you won't get is OTA and warranty.

[Q] is it possible to get bravia engine 2 back?

hey guys, im new to this forum,,
anyways,
i know that unlocking bootloader will take away xperia z's bravia engine,
but if i relock the bootloader again, will i be able to get it back?
opinions pls :<
P.S. : does losing bravia engine is a really big deal to you?
For now there is no way to get BE2 back after unlocking.
Maybe in the future, no one can tell.
Kind regards, Stefan.

thanks for teh answer thaevil0ne, btw, do you think losing bravia engine is a really big deal?
For me, not at all.
I unlocked the bootloader even before checking out the BE, as I want custom kernels.
As far as I understand it will only work when you view pictures or movies with the Sony Album app.
If you browse the web or play games the engine will not be active at all.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Hey folks,
we often heard now that BE2 can't be brought back after unlocking bootloader.
My question is simple...WHY?? Maybe some dev can answer this question. I don't understand where's the link between unlocking and the BE2 engine. And why does this only affect pictures? That makes no sense...
In addition to that, there are a lot of ROMs for other sony devices which bring BE2 to them. Why shouldn't it be possible to bring it back then?
I understand that thing with loosing DRM support because of security issues...but an graphics engine....?

reading your comment made me feel better, i thought xperia phones will be suck if theres no bravia,
DooMLoRD ported BE1 to Xperia Play back in the day, see this topic:

So Iam pretty sure it must be possible to port BE2 aswell, maybe DooMLoRD could explain us a bit more?

Maybe, but from my point of view, it's a feature supported by Sony. Why then punish users/devs who work on that nice piece of hardware to make it even better...

When you unlock the bootloader you lose things called DRM keys, these can never be restored after unlocking. These keys are used to make specific functions or features work. After you unlock as these keys are no longer there so some functions won't work. Sadly bravia engine is one of these things that stops working.

Has anyone tried this method: http://xperianeoldev.blogspot.be/2013/05/tutorial-install-bravia-engine-2-on.html ?
I asked the author of this tutorial if it would be possible to make similar deal with XZ and it is what he answered:
"Yes , use the tutorial given in the website it is working on all xperia smartphones"
Still hope to get BE2 back!
For all people here you will brick your phones. Unlocking your bootloader you do not loose bravia engine it was told 100x times read forum
bravia will be loss in album but video still work.
That's still half not working
Bootloader unlocked but I still have the option to turn BE2 on or off. I can't decide is there any difference when it's on then off...

It surly does not work with the pictures.
Bth I had a few smartphones as far: iPhone (jailbreaked), HTC HD, S Galaxy Nexus, Galaxt Tab 7, and have never had problems like this that I irreversibly lost such important features after unlockimg the bootloader. Of course it is only me to blame as I should have done more research before but bearing in mind my earlier experience and the fact the instructions were taken fron offical Sony site I just felt too self confident.
Anyway I think next time I will not choose Sony smartphone as I am bit dissapointed with the situation esp. when you see BE ported on devices from HTC, Samsung or others.

Do you still have the option for BE2? I also thought we lost the ability to get track info and movie info from Gracenote, that's still working fine for me. I don't do DRM so it's no loss to me.
I've not used other devices much, I vaguely remember with Samsung you're sideloading the firmware as opposed to Sony where you're unlocking to freely change the firmware... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes I do. The button BE2 is still visible in my settings but there is no difference if I turn it on or off. For getting track info it is similar - I can start this option, wait until is finished. Then start it again and exactly the same number tracks is updated. You can repeat the process all over but in fact nothing is changed.
I don't know what you exactly mean "sideloading" but when I had Galaxy Nexus I could freely change the firmware, could have f.eg. JB with Touch Wizz from S3. Of course had no BE2 at all but the screen was more vivid so the pictures looked better (my opinion) than on XZ without BE.
Anyway there are mods which allow to install BE2 on devices from HTC, Samsung, Motorolla or other unlocked Sony models and that makes me even more disappointed.

I still have the ability to use the Gracenote services, I updated all my music and it replaced the cover art, I also did the same with my movie & tv show collection.
On Samsung i believe the system is less secured when it comes to installing other firmwares hence the ease with which it's done. Firmwares can be installed without unlocking unlike Sony. (this is not my direct experience with Samsung only what I've heard)
As for BE2 it can installed on other devices and according to a post i read last night it's theoretically can be done, but not yet tried.

[Q] Unlocking any downsides?

Hi there, i've got an Z1 ordered wich should be delivered tomorrow or the day after.
I've read a few threads in advance and even checked out some roms wich will suit me
I've got a question though;
It's not that beginner stuff, i have a sxs and i know what to do to unlock the bootloader and flash cfws.
I've read some posts about having camera issues in CM11 and that is has something to do with unlocking the bootloader (link)
i'm honest:i haven't read the whole thread so sorry if that issue should be resolved now.
now the point of this thread:
is there anything that can f**k up my device when unlocking it while completely following sony's guide?
or should is there another foolproof method?
next thing:
i've read alot about that touchscreen bug. if i have this bug, do have it right from the start or can it also happen later?
i don't want to unlock my device and then after some time falling victim to this bug.
last question:
if anything happens, worst case scenario:
i've unlocked my device and something happens to it. can i relock my bootloader without sony knowing that it was unlocked?
thanks in advance

If you have the problem then you have it already, you just don't know how to reproduce it. Unlocking Bootloader have nothing to do with it.

Before Unlock Bootlader you have to root your phone and Backup TA and DRM keys, then you can Unlock or reLock your Bootlader.
Should be covered via warranty if the Booloader is locked, so if you Relock your Bootlader should be too.
I haven't read about any bricks just from unlocking.
Most bricks happen when going from 4.2.2 to 4.3

do you really have to backup TA and DRM keys? i didnt do that when unlocking the bootloader (it took me 2h to unlock it and install a custom ROM, didnt have time to flash 3 ROMs just to get root and be able to backup TA/DRM)
afaik DRM keys are only needed for bravia engine which many people think is useless and even worsens image quality due to heavy sharpening..

warranty i didnt have from the start, so no loss there
X-Reality, Bionz and Bravia engine all sound like marketing gimmicks - especially x-reality/bravia engine which does nothing for image quality, use of TFT displays is Sonys biggest problem and no software enhancement can solve that (HTC still makes the best displays on the market)
and Bionz didnt help Sony make best smartphone camera on the market
the way i look at it, its just like having AOSP/Google device..

I don't know, in Galeria Promenada, Ul Ostrobramska, shop Teletorium they selling fake Phones?
In daylight all pictures seems good, I don't like the quality of 20mpx and 8mpx in iAuto. Too much noise, many complain about that, just a bit of low light and Bam, expensive camera gone on the moon. I don't like the pictures, my personal opignion. The phone is good to me and if it's fake they really do a hell of job in China, still Made in China the Genuine anyway so no big difference!

woah, my thread got hijacked...
i'd like to give feedback now:
i don't know of camera quality yet, since i still got those factory screen protectors on my z1 (those ugly ones wich you have to peel off). i'd like to keep it that way until i get my third party screen protector. i'm a bit clumsy and i don't like the thought of having scratches on sonys stock protectors. i will get my screen protector + case tomorrow
i'm halfway through unlocking the phone. it came with 257 (4.2) t-mobile branded, so i had to downgrade to 534 to get root. ive had to read alot before downgrading, i wasn't really sure if drm keys stay if i just downgrade via flashtool. took me a while too get those firmwares too .
the biggest problems i had were with my adb drivers. I had a SXS before, where all was pretty smooth. But i had dozens of problems to get those adb drivers for my z1 to work. Normally i don't have any problems with such things as drivers but those really got my nuts :/
Windows installed drivers of their own, wouldn't let me overwrite nor delete them. Either the drivers were to old or wouldn't fit device (wich was a lie). Good thing i have a ssd, because i've punched my desk more than a few times
now i'm on 290, with root and recovery. i have a backup of TA partition, and next thing i'll do is unlocking the bootloader.
second:
at the moment i lack of a rubber mat, so i can't really test my screen. up until now i haven't noticed any problem with the responsiveness of the screen. i'll report back if im through with that.
Nice, sorry i think the thread hijacking was my fault
Anyway z1 camera is as good as xperia s camera, sucks is lower light levels but besides that its amazing,

[Q] do i loose keys, if i unlocked bootloader after .136 update?

hello ,
just wanted to know , that after upgrading to .136 firmware and later unlocking the boot loader, would i loose drm keys?
and boot loader have not been unlocked earlier, and after unlocking BL on .136 firmware , i am able to back up TA partition which has an size of 282 kb, is this right?
Everytime you unlock the bootloader you loose the DRM keys. Your TA Backup may be OK, did you check it with a restore dry run? My backup is very small too.
I am able to backup TA partation even after unlocking bootloader, ppol are saying you loose drm keys! Then how is it possible? And even I am able to dry run it. I am on. 136 firmware.
So is it that we do not loose DRM keys if we unlocked bootloader on . 136 firmware?

Well, there's only one way to figure it out
You have your first TA backup. Let's name it as TA1
1. Flash 136 FTF
2. Backup your TA (this is a different TA with your virgin Z1), now let's name it as TA2
3. Relock your bootloader using TA2
Check if it's OK or not. Well, I can't try this since I'm using CM now, and I lost my DRM key like forever (my hard disk was formatted where my TA backup was stored).
a backup made after unlocking the bootloader will NOT contain the DRM keys
Which features do we loose with the drm keys?
I found out the hard way that screen mirroring (miracast) won't work anymore.
I am able to download song infos.... X-reality works well, miracast works well.... Damnn I am confused.....
What function does DRM stops?

Broken camera on BL unlock has been fixed with this or the previous firmware.
Many may have noticed that after . 136 update our z1 phones already poor flash led has gone more weak, so night shots arent that gr8....
Just came across a post copied the following values at the bottom, in system, build.prop and rebooted.... And wolaa its works for me.
ro.media.capture.flash=led
ro.media.capture.flashMinV=3300000
ro.media.capture.torchIntensity=140
ro.media.capture.flashIntensity=150
*have edited some lines, and please try it at your own risk and dont blame me if anything goes wrong.
I am getting quite better night shots with the above mod.

Due to the DMCA (digital millenium copyright act), Sony (and all others) are able to sell their phones (and other smart devices) to you under a license which doesn't permit you to do whatever you want with its software. Legally this means that they don't have to allow you to unlock their phones, but they do it as a deterrent for hackers looking for exploits, the idea here is that if we can unlock our phones through an easy process, we will be less inclined to look for exploits to do it in a way that Sony can't control, meaning they will have an easier time selling locked down phones to carriers who want it.
Because of this, Sony are able to set the terms of unlocking the bootloader as they please, and in this case they have decided that you are not entitled to the Sony-specific features if you do unlock.
If you really wanna do something about this, your best bet is to donate money to the EFF, an organisation with the goal of fighting ridiculous **** like the DMCA. They were the ones who made jailbreaking iPhones legal and they are actively fighting for net neutrality amongst other things.
One way of donating to them is to purchase a Humble Bundle, as all (standard) orders give 10% of the proceeds to the EFF, if you want you can even tilt that up to 100%.

Good for you, but Samsung/HTC/etc aren't any better, they all require you to sign an agreement saying your warranty is void if you unlock. If you want an unlocked device Nexuses are your only option. If you want unique hardware that might not be completely unlocked then buy Sony/Samsung/HTC/etc. But if these special features you lose by unlocking really are so precious to you then remember that you never had them in the first place with a Nexus.
I think the way Sony do it is the best, other than nexus. And the comment about suing, that's why the word hats the US.

I think the way of Sony is good. Better than HTC with the One X there was no chance to unlock the bootloader.
But, I noticed yesterday when I unlocked my Bootloader I don't lost the DRM Keys. I was already on the Ihackers 3.0 ROM (.136) unlocked and because of Bootloops I relocked the bootloader flash the 1.290 ftf then I rooted again and restore Recovery Backup. All things works Camera, Gracenote Walkman and other.

There..... Now I think I maybe right, so when we unlock bootloader on . 136 DRM remains intact and does not gets deleted.

Unlocking bootloader disadvantage?

I have searched and asked this many times. But no one seems to have a answer for me. So let's see if someone on the Q & A thread will...
I have a Z1 that can be boot loader unlocked. However I don't know whether its worth it.
The biggest thing to put me off was loss of x reality but there is a solution now.
The biggest thing that is putting me off is camera performance. I heard it removes Sony software for the camera called BIONZ. I want to know if anyone can tell the difference in camera quality with their unlocked boot loader as opposed to a locked boot loader.
So any answers appreciated!

Well there is a thread somewhere around here called another Sony secret and they are talking about the difference between pictures with an unlocked bl and pictures with a locked bl...the op said that there is a lot more noise in the pictures with an unlocked bl...look for that thread and you will find more info

Well I have mentioned this earlier.
This has had no negative effect on mine. I saw a camera improvement overall in .290, but other than that I have not been very satisfied with 4.3.
.257 had way less issues (talking about firmware as a whole here). Fingers crossed for kitkat:fingers-crossed:
So what I'm saying is, weird that I can percieve better results going from locked .257 - to unlocked .290.
I've read around that mentioned thread, and to me there was heavy speculation going on in there.

I'm sure in good light you won't notice the difference so just go for it... Don't forget to backup all the important stuff like TA etc...

@technostein
Unlock bootloader and try, if you don't like it just restore your TA and you are back again...
Just be sure you are on 4.3 because of camera...
I was always unlocking bootloader but I bought Z1 (in purpose) with bootloader status - NO.
I'm completely satisfied with Sony ROMs ( back from 4.1.2) and can't find any reason to use custom kernel...
Just don't need that...
OC? Really don't need more cpu or gpu speed.
All other features are already in stock kernel...
Maybe, only, if Sony decide not to add KNOCKON feature- I would miss custom kernel - but who cares for just one thing...

Reason why I am tempted it because I run ihackers ROM 3.0 and I liked the changelogs of ihackers kernel. such as noise reduction in camera and loads of tweaks and build prop tweaks.
Be aware that by unlocking formally sony's guarantee will be lost, as that is stated in their terms. I don't know if relocking will fix the guarantee issue of there is a need later on.

I saw somewhere on XDA a thread about differences quality pictures between Locked and Unlocked Bootloader and the pictures on Unlocked Bootloader had much more less quality and more noise than the one with the Locked Bootloader. I can't guarantee the accuracy of that information but if it is true then Unlocking Bootlader is very bad for the quality pictures. I am sure it can be fixed because of software related but how and when I don't know. I still keep my Bootloader Locked even if I am tempt to unlock it to install CM11.

Sony credentials restore after unlocking the bootloader

This is outdated and not maintained anymore. Please this new tool instead
Most of us have decided to unlock the bootloader as there is no root or xposed without it.
But as you may have noticed this wipes the masterkey in TA unit 66667 and will make all Sony credentials inaccesible. As a consequence a lot of functionality is lost, e.g x-reality, Sony application updates etc.
Here is a solution to simulate the credentials again. There is no way to recover your lost key, but we can simulate them. Just flash the attached zip via TWRP, that's all.
This is solution is for all Z5 models (Z5 compact, Z5 , Z5 Premium, and the dual models of course)
Have fun

I can say that I have tested this on Xperia Z5 Premium, and when I view the sample photos that came with the phone I can now clearly see the image quality scale up just like before I unlocked bootloader!
Thanks ALOT Tobias, you're the man!
EDIT: Below I have included my experiences from the original thread where this was posted, and I will continue to update it if I feel necessary!
Testing right now on Z5P, will report back!
EDIT: First test: I went into album and viewed the sample photos that came with the phone. I can now se a clear change in the image quality, just like before unlocking bootloader! Going to do some camera tests now!
EDIT2: My camera app will not start, stating it is already in use or the flashlight is. Will try to install camera 2.0 then see what happens.
Camera keeps crashing, and will not start :S
EDIT3: Now suddenly there were several updates available on the "Whats new" app! Will post a screenshot soon!
EDIT4: I installed a 3rd party camera app (CyanogenOS Camera) and the pictures are noticeably better than before this fix! I think I can say its back to the quality it was before unlocking bootloader!
In the meantime I discovered that my 32gb sd card is now almost full, with only 2gb left. Are there any large files that twrp creates other than the backup files everytime I flash a rom or something?
Is there anything I can safely delete here?
EDIT5: After some more camera testing and comparing pictures with my lumia 1020 and my galaxy s6 I can say that in my eyes the picture quality is back to its original state.
So just flash this in recovery on an unlocked bootloader and we are done? Or am I missing something?
I haven't unlocked my bootloader as of yet but I'm tempted to now.

I've read reports of Sony's Camera app not working after using this. Can you confirm if the TA partition only had DRM keys and not also some camera algorithms? If they did, can we use get those as well?

I assume you are refering to my experiences with this fix.
Although the sony camera app for some reason stopped working after this, I can still use all my other apps that include the use of the camera without problems, like snapchat or the Cyanogen Camera which when I take pictures with and compare them to the pictures taken before the DRM restore, I can clearly see that the picture quality is now back!

Actually, CyanogenOS Camera has it's own postprocesssing, so you aren't using Sony's. It's just an alternative. I still want to know if it's possible to get the Sony algorithms back and/or use Sony's Camera app.

Oh, I didnt know that, I thought it was just the app that looked different if you know what I mean?
Tobias, awesome work.
I wonder, how likely do you think it is that Sony will be able to patch this exploit in the Marshmallow update?

My first idea is also think that he should keep it secret until 6.0 out..... (maybe he should delete all files now until 6.0)

I've just flashed the patch and my sony camera 2.0 is working. I guess you installed xposed which conflicted with camera 1.0, you'll need to deodex it or upgrade to camera 2.0 via What's New.
EDIT: I just tested Sony camera 2.0 to shoot with real high 3200iso indoor and no color noise there, confirmed this patch restored Sony low-light denoise algorithms.

I just tested CyanogenOS Camera. I think it actually make use of Sony engine, not to mention it works with 23MP/20MP mode and it also access all scenes mode in Sony camera just acting like a stock camera. Tried to shoot at indoor low-light, no color noise been found, I think the DRM patch is working good with CyanogenOS camera.
Great work OP!
you've made a breakout of the Z5 series!

Congratulations! Any chance of doing this for Sony's forgotten child, the Z3+?

I did over 2 weeks research in order to understand the whole mechanism and I have to admit that thre Sony security team did a pretty good job.
Anyway as I have a Z5 dual myself you can count on that I will make it work with Marshmallow.

For the Z3+ you might want to check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
Thanks to jimRnor for this contribution

But I already had xposed installed before this, and the camera was working fine. Also I am on a deodexed rom (RomAur).
Updated camera throught What's New, still nothing.
Need help please
Thanks for this. Installed and all working.

Any reason you're not making this version available for 32bit devices?
Brilliant! Gonna unlock my BL soon after work.
 @tobias.waldvogel
Btw mate, mind to share ur modded kernel (maybe with recovery image as well) for Z5 Dual? mine is E6683.
ehhh, i can't test because i'm not rooted (yet), but if this really works you are officially THE man! and i think you can start a campaign to claim the bounty that is out there. i know i would pay up my part!
that is, if it works (and keeps working on marshmallow)
