Silly question but didn't get the answer anywhere..
Could anybody tell me the "in-box" phone cable's length..?

I'd guess it is about 3-4 feet.

Well, think is enough so.
I'm coming from an Asus Zenfone 2 deluxe where cable was half a metre, what it actually did suck...

its rather short IMO.
Would be better if OP gave us like an extra 1 or 2 feet

Mine is 1 meter i think.

It's one meter (3 feet). They have one that's 150cm (5 feet) for sale in their store if you need a longer one. One thing to note about the 5 feet cable is that it's flat, and not round like the one included with the phone.

The way Dash charging works necessitates a short, thick cable. Dash uses a higher current (4A) while maintaining 5V. Because of the increased current you would have too much of a voltage drop with a thinner or longer cable.
You can get a standard charger and a 2m cable but you would have slower charging.

Its exactly 100cm or 1meter. They sell a 150cm on the website but I don't know if it performs just as fast. And that's still rather short. I prefer 6-10 ft cables. I bought some 6.6ft cables on amazon. They won't provide dash charge. But should still charge rather quickly. Maybe 90-120 mins. Which is still fast in most regards. Have the fast cable when you need it. And the long cable when just browsing and relaxing etc...

Car chargers, please recommend !

I'm going on a looooong trip next week, and will be away from home for about two weeks... Most of the driving will be of about 6 hours between hotel stops or whatever, and unless I'll be sleepy, I'll surely abuse my Note, haha. Will reach a hotel where I'll stay for 10 days, but the rest of the time will be wasted on the road...
So... a car charger is needed .
What would you guys recommend? In terms of brand, first... because I know some manufacturers write 1A on them, when they give not even half...
I've seen MOMAX chargers that give 1A @ 5V x 2 (had two USB outs) at about 15 bucks, for example.
I've also seen an orange-branded charger at 5 EUR (but it was almost double in lenght than the MOMAX one), with an included microUSB cable, that outputs 2A or 2.1A @ 5V. Would THAT one be safe to use? Or any charger that outputs >1.5A, for example...?
Also, will the phone charge faster if using a charger that gives 2A? I know it won't draw 1900mA out of it, lol, but still...

Unfortunately I did not test it yet on the car on a long drive and with the Note running empty; also due to the small form of the microusb plug I cannot perform any electric measurement.
I can confirm that measuring other car chargers of 0.5A and 0.7A I have found out that the o/p voltage is dropping a lot during the charging process, thus explaining the resulting low current and long charging time.

The output current capability of a charger has nothing to do with how much curent the phone will draw while charging (of course the maximum rating of the charger must not be exceeded), on the condition that the 5V output voltage is not going too high at the lowest current consumption (when the battery is almost full).
Good luck in finding the suitable charger for your needs!

Try a mobile inverter and use your prefered wall charger. in 400W range you can charger all your devices. Try here:

I use a chinese one here, one with two outlets and 2 usbs 1A each. It's big but it's the perfect solution. Otherwise i have a powerjolt from griffin ,5A for the phone during car navigation. http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Powerjolt-Dual-Universal-Micro/dp/B0042B9U8Q It's really small and stealth.

Erm... the first one looks expensive. I don't need a holder. No-go.
The second one is expensive, too, but I think I'd rather pay that money for THAT instead of the Momax one. GOSH, they don't state the lenght of the cable. Any idea how long that is?

Yeah... I kind of noticed that. The Note draws even 1200mA at times, and I tried with the original charger and a HTC wall brick charger (both giving 1A @ 5V). So yeah... guess the phone can draw more than the charger can provide, if that makes sense, lol.
So you're saying that even a 700mA @ 5V charger can give 1A to the phone? Or I got it all wrong?

That makes me think... why not use a car battery rectifier and give it 50 amps to eat . Sorry, but that's the first thing that popped in my head when I heard "inverter".

Heard Griffin are good!
You mean that Griffin Powerjolt (which is stated to give 1A) outputs 5 AMPS TO YOUR PHONE?!?!?!
Although that thing is cheap on Amazon... it's about 20 EUR here, in Romania . At least that's the smallest price I can find for it... so, not sure I'll go for that one .

No, I did not say that, on the contrary.
Here are some measured values:
0.7A car charger:
Open circuit voltage (disconnected phone):5.34V
Voltage under charging: 4.52V
Charging current: 0.6A measured on a resistor load
0.5A car charger:
Open circuit voltage (disconnected phone):5.31V
Voltage under charging: 3.16V
Charging current: 0.42A measured on a resistor load
Both chargers are doing the job, but very, very slow (2 to 3 hours from empty to full battery charge) and IF not many services are running on the phone.

Battery Monitor Widget - set the logging to every 60 seconds.
I attached the .txt logs to this post. Each log was done during charging, with Wi-Fi, Data and GPS off. Alarms were set to go off sometime in the morning (7 AM or 8, whatever), it is visible in the logs.
Even 2 and 1.6 amps were drawn at some point .
I used two chargers, because I wanted to see whether the HTC one can charge faster... if it can give more than 1A more often. It seems not, so I won't spend 10 bucks on a HTC one; will stick to the provided Samsung charger.

It is said that charging at lower currents/voltages is healthier for the battery. But no thank you... I'll buy a car charger that gives 1A, lol. Still haven't decided which one I'll go for, but anyway...

(poll) POGO CHARGER WORTH IT?

Hey guys so lately there's been a lot of discussion about the pogo charger.
I've checked all the threads and more than the value of the charger, the forums are filled with shipping complaints.
I can't seem to sort out the opinions and real comments on the pogo.
As such, for those really on the fence about getting a charger (like me) I made this poll, since there was one on screen protectors to help people choose.
Any comments made, please make constructive opinions on if you have a pogo charger, if it's worth it, etc. (not on your shipping problems please)

I only bought it because I thought it would be able to charge my tablet while under heavy usage (1.7GHz performance gov + full brightness), and sadly it doesn't even seem capable of doing this.

I seem to remember somebody stating that under heavy usage they've saw a current drain over 3A. If your situation is the same, nothing is going to keep up with that which is over the max of the charging circuit. It's simple to test for that.
The POGO cord charges faster but stops during OTG usage, no ROM/kernel Dev's have tried to solve this issue so far. There may be another issue with cigarette lighter type power supply also.
Shipping just took time from Korea, now they have a US shipping source through Amazon.
I really like it, saves wear and tear on the USB. I charge at night, and never have enough time to use it that I run the battery in a day. The OTG complication is annoying, but liveable, and hopefully likely to be solved.
I like the reduced wear on the micro usb connection and additional safety of quicker disconnect if cord is yanked from tripping. I charge the tablet at night, so not too concerned whether charging is quicker. I would love to see some ideas on how to improvise a charging dock using this cable!
I think whether it's worth it totally depends on the reason you want it. If you want to use OTG while charging or to do data transfer, it's obviously a bust.
These are the reasons I'm very happy with it, in order of priority:
1) Saves stress on the USB jack, especially if dropped or banged against something.
2) Easy to click onto the N10 when I'm done reading an ebook in bed at night and I'm sleepy.
3) Charges a bit faster than USB.
If you're looking for a miraculously shorter charge time then it's not worth getting.
Definitely worthwhile ... it is one of the nicest accessories I've purchased in a while. I purchased it only for the convenience of not having to mess with the mUSB charging. It delivered. My charging graphs indicate that it charges at a faster rate than the mUSB ... just a small extra bonus.

I bought it because I've had occasions where others in the house have messed up micro-usb connections on phones due to using them while still plugged in - with this, there's no way of easily damaging it
And so far, so good! Would really recommend it.

Wow, max brightness ? I find the lowest setting really bright.
I did general usage on lowest brightness and it charged pretty good, IMO.
It was worth every penny and when they come back in stock at Amazon I will order another.
I use my tablet heavily throughout the day and found myself unable to charge it completely while I slept. Now using the stock wall wart and pogo it charges in a fraction of the time. Like I said, worth every penny.
Charges faster, but was it worth it for me? Still undecided. The main reason for me getting it was to plug a HD into an OTG cable and still get power to the device via the POGO. Unfortunately that will not work. The POGO will not charge when running OTG. Shame.
Back in stock on Amazon... Just ordered one tonight. I'm interested for two reasons. Slightly faster charging (not a big deal for me, as I generally plug it in at night, and use it much of the day), and I also like the idea of the pogo connector instead of using the USB socket every day. Should have it in 3 to 5 business days.

Just ordered one off eBay, should have it by the 20th at the latest. I spend a lot of time driving so carry the Nexus 10 around with me in the car and I've bent the USB plug on the cable so though I'm better off getting the pogo charger incase I damage the USB port on the tablet
Answer- Yes it is but...
Just got the pogo cable on Friday and did some testing over the weekend and have some results and observations.
I ran my N10 down to 10% Saturday and plugged in via the pogo cable at about 11:30pm. . When I checked Battery Monitor Widget the following morning it showed fully charged at 4am. Total time 4.5 hours. Max charging rate was at 1916mA and tapered to 415mA.
Sunday I did the same, (11% and 11:30pm) and used the USB cable. A check of BMW showed the N10 fully charged by 5am. Total time 5.5 hours. Max rate was 1559mA and a taper to 420mA.
So, an hour faster. Not huge, but significant. Overall I think the important thing with the pogo cable is that it will charge as you use it. When I plugged in with it before I turned the screen off I was showing a net charge, while with USB it continued to discharge, albeit slower.
Both of these (admittedly unscientific) tests were done with the OEM charger and USB cable.
The pogo charger is a great way to save the USB port of the Nexus 10 if you have young kids. Since the pogo charger is magnetic, there no way to damage the tablet when a toddler yanks it off a desk while its charging. I am very happy with my pogo cable. Bought it off amazon and got it in 2 days.

USB cable that can run at 1800mA

I've managed to find some chargers (both car and wall) that will charge with 1800mA (according to Galaxy Charging Lite app).
I have not managed to find an aftermarket cable that will charge at more than 1amp. Anyone know of an aftermarket cable that actually is capable of 1800mA? I've tried nGear and monoprice, and while they are very well constructed cables, they will only charge at 1amp or less with the n7100
Thanks for the help in advance, but please only respond to this if you've actually tested the cable with with the Galaxy Charging app or a current meter of some sort. I'm not interested in cables that only work anecdotally.

I'm breaking your rules (gasp) but as far as I'm aware, it's not the cable that manages the charge, it's the power adapter that feeds the usb, right? I've used all sorts of random cables on my travels for work, but always sticking to my 2+ amp output charger, and they've always worked.

Find a very short cable and you'll see rates up to 2100 ma (as measure by battery monitor widget). I use the short usb cable that came with my jambox combined with the the phones stock charger. The charger gets so hot due to the high current that I worry if it might burn out. The cable is very short, like 6 inches. I use this one when i need a quick bump before going out.
At this low of voltage plus high current, the shielding on most cables is not enough to protect against the voltage fluctuations caused by the high magnetic field. The longer the cable the more shielding is needed. Additionally, the cable shielding gets less effective as the cable gets older due to general wear. My original usb cable can only due around 740 - 1250ma, where it used to do 1800ma when new nearly 2 years ago.
If you could find a cable where there the positive and negative wires are separated in parallel strands like traditional AC power cords, it would also help. I have a cheap charger with built in cord like this and it charges consistently fast.

Most USB cables will work with the charger, but some cables (usually longer or smaller gauge wires) will restrict the charge to a lower amperage. I still haven't quite figured out how the phone knows what cable is being used, because, realistically, in a simple DC circuit, the consequence of using a cable that is too small is heating up or burning out. A cable that is too small alone will not prevent too much amperage from going through itself. This is why they invented fuses. Somehow the phone detects the gauge/length of cable being used and restricts the amperage being pulled from the charger by changing its own resistance on the circuit.

I suspect you're right. The impedance of a cable is the only thing that would change over a period of time that would result in a cable that could once pull 2A to start pulling less than that. Still, it would be nice to have a list of chargers/cables that consistently pull 2A before dropping $15-$30 on one of them. There exists such a list on this forum, but it is filled with comments like "It's good enough for me", without any real data as to what performance they are getting. Hence my rules above.
The charge rate depends on your kernal not the cable. I use Agni and get over 2 amp charges from a USB cable I paid 12 cents shipped for on eBay.
I purchased this cable about two weeks ago and it delivers!! I can charge my 9300mah Zero Lemon battery from 0-100 in just under 4 hours. Stock battery in about 1.5-2hrs. Of course I'm using a 2.1 amp charger, but NONE of my other cables come close. I'm averaging 1800-1900mah charge rate with it. Next highest rate cord only gets about 1200 max. I plan on ordering 2-3 more. $5 and change with PRIME.

My 6ft one has a ferrite end and printed on it: 28agw/1p and 26awg/2c. It could handle 2A just fine, but this requires any wall outlet adapter that can output that amperage. The oem outlet adapter that comes with the phone says 2.0A output, but you can fine any 'reliable' one that has 2.0A output.

Got similar problems as the OP. I wanted to charge my phone in my car and using the phone as a navigation device without depleting the battery (which occured a few time).
Tried several usb cables, even did some mods like shorting the white and green data wire in the cabel at the phone side, but that all didn't help.
Then i came to Kopi who sells usb cables which can deliver a full current.

Since switching to my Nexus 5x I have had to redo all of my power supplies. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Google wall options but now I have a request for something portable.
What I am looking for is a battery pack that can output the 3amps to quickly charge the phone, I dont really care if it charges quickly itself. The reason being is I have a solar panel that can push 1-2 amps and I was planning on strapping it to the back of the bike or leaving it on the tent to charge the battery over time and then using the battery to charge the phone.

I have an Anker Powercore 21000mAH external battery, using a USB A to C cable, Ampere reports charge rates up to approx 1700mAH. The lock screen reports charging rapidly.
The cable is a Pecham one, It appears to be good quality, nice and thick, braided cable and a positive fit at the 5x end. I was happy with the charging speed, having just read the google cable reviews thread not so sure.....

I own the Romoss Solo5, outputs at 2.1a and 1.5a. With a normal type C cable from CableMatters, I don't get rapid charging, but it does fill up faster than a generic usb charger.

Ill be curious to see what you get. My concern is they dont mention the specific output of the ports, just the overall 3 amp. I suspect its split across teh two ports in some fashion like most (where they can do 2 amps on a single port but then 1.5 across both)
I have a 2 amp charger but I am hoping for a 3 to get that max performance. The idea is I could use the phone for music, navigation, etc on the motorcycle and then get a very quick top up while breaking for lunch, etc.
You need a type C connector at both ends.
A USB type-C to type-A cable cannot and should not allow charging at more than 2A (0.5A for USB 2.0 standard), because that is the most allowed in the USB spec as mentioned by the Google engineer that's been reviewing Type-C cables on Amazon. In order to support 3A rapid charging you would need a battery pack with a type-C port on it that supports rapid charging. Even if a type-A port is capable of supplying 3+ amps, the phone will only charge at up to about 1.7A without the type-C port at both ends. I don't know of any battery packs that support the type-C spec yet, although I'm sure they're coming.
That is why I am asking. I dont care if it charges itself at 3amps because my sources wouldnt provide that anyway. Im looking for the battery pack itself to pump out 3 amps. Im holding out for one of those and until then I will work along with my existing ones.

Neat thing about this, you can use the OEM 5v 3a charger to charge it. Interesting to see if it charges faster than other options.
mysterious posted in the other thread that he/she ordered it. Im waiting with baited breath to hear the results. This might be the perfect all-rounder (dont really need the other ports but they dont hurt anything).
Could charge with my solar panels, could charge with the stock adapter and hopefully the phone quickly on a lunch break.
I love how none of these products ship to Canada, except the official Google stuff which is no out of stock.

Sabrent 22AWG USB 3.0 Extension Cable works with Dash Charging.

The 3 foot cable was confirmed working on the op3 forum, I have not tried that one but I have personally bought and tested the 6 foot and can confirm that it supports dash charging. At 6 bucks this is a very inexpensive option to extend the stock cable. It also fits very tightly and I am not worried about it coming apart. (At least for now.)

if yes how much in terms of charging from 0-50 and 0-100 compared to the stock cable without extension
I have a 6ft monoprice extension that allows the phone to register dash charge but still only charges at standard rate. It's like the AC adapter can still tell the difference.

I have but I figured that the app was wrong because it showed that me using my old i-orange micro with a micro to c adapter and my samsung s7 brick that I was charging at the same speed as with the official dash charger (This being Ampere)

that's a bumper, ya im sure the 1+ dash charge cable has some kind of chip. an the USB A cable is a bit different if you look inside of it

I meant with Ampere both these setups show the same.
Samsung + micro + micro to c adapter
Stock + Stock cable
So I figured the app is not reading dash correctly if that other setup states the same speeds.

Extension cables work with QC2.0 and 3.0 perfectly fine. I used my monoprice 6ft USB3.0 with my Nexus 6 and it worked fine. Ampere registered about 2300mA with the N6 when quick charging. This was just about the same rating that I achieved with the stock cable and no extension.
The case of the OP3 is different. With the stock cable connected directly to the Dash Charger, Ampere registers about 3300-3400mA. With the 6ft extension in place, the phone shows "Dash Charging" on the lock screen and I get the blue Dash Charge LED charging light, but Ampere only registers about 1300mA charging.

Its about the juice not about the info...
BTW... If you get a 20 ft long "Dash cable'' probably the cable resistance will be so high that you could get max 300mA that's why 1+ will never produce 20ft USB..

I wasn't asking anything. I already know dash charge wasn't happening. I just want people to know that even though the phone registers "Dash Charging" on the lockscreen, it isn't really happening with an extension.
Nobody is asking OnePlus to produce a 20ft dash cable. There's just simply no reason why we shouldn't be able to get a 2M cable. The loss due to additional resistance would be negligible.

I personally hate the 1m (and even more so when it comes to shorter) cables. Can't play with the phone while charging, because no jacks are ever close enough that the cable reaches the closest seating option (orher than the all present floor ) . Even in office the charger is relatively close, but when I answer the phone the cable is too short.
2m would be perfection for me at least. I know it's too long for some, but then again I'm talking about a choice to order one.
And as biglilsteve said, there is no elecro-physical limit to this 2m cable, and if the heating (if resistance grows the cable heats more) should become an issue the cable could be designed to compensate it with thicker copper (and that would be something like 10%+20% thicker I assume)

Just got the 3m Sabrent extension in yesterday and very pleased with the speed. I'll take it.
Screenshot isn't uploading from my phone for some reason but I got 3010 mA on Ampere.
At this point I'm quite confused about it the ability to use a extension. I want to charge my OP3 comfortably. So if I buy a USB 3.0 extension from Anker, Aukey, Amazon Basics or another brand it will charge I know that. But it will be Dash Charge or Traditional charge? Thanks

Don't know about others, but I personally can tell you dash charge works with the extension mentioned in the OP. You lose a couple hundred mA of charging speed, but still get around 3000 mA, which is the speed that QC3.0 runs. Perfectly acceptable!
