Headphone Jack is very likely, SD Card slot is possible - OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

The title says it all, but I will explain some of the background for this.
As some of you may know OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo are all owned by the same firm under the name of BBK Electronics. And in the past there have been close similarities between OnePlus and Oppo devices. Take Dash Charging being a OnePlus rebrand of Oppo's VOOC Charging as an example.
This time around OnePlus has taking the design out of Oppo's book. The recently unveiled Oppo R11 looks strikingly similar to the OnePlus 5, take a look:

As you can see the similarities are very clear, even down to the antennae lines.
So sure, they look alike but we all know their specs will be different in terms of processing. Obviously the OP5 will boast the Snapdragon 835 and supposedly 8GB of RAM. Far different than the R11's spec sheet. But a few key details on the R11's spec sheet raise some questions on whether or not they will carry over to the OP5.
http://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_r11_plus-8719.php
Taking a look at the spec sheet we find a few details that are most interesting. The first, is that the screen is still 1080p, the second, a headphone jack is included, and the third is the most interesting of them all: SD card slot.
While I am aware this is a simple internal change to add or remove an SD card slot from a design standpoint, is this an indication that OnePlus may finally give us an SD Card slot again?
Only time will tell.
Going back to the topic of headphone jacks, the R11 has one and I really don't see OnePlus dropping it either since they have gone out and poked fun at Apple for their decision. It would be silly to mock a competitor for something they removed then remove it yourself. Just food for thought.
What do you all think? Will OnePlus really give us a SD Card slot?

I'd really love to get the sd card slot.
That plus the extra increased resolution could be worth the buy by itself for me.

It sounds like the headphone jack will be on the top if it's included. Carl Pei did that poll on twitter and the response was overwhelmingly "WANT WANT WANT" for a headphone jack. In the photos it doesn't seem to be on the bottom so it has to be on the top.. if I remember right, some rumors suggested that too on Weibo or elsewhere.

Some of those tweets were in reference to an alleged design that isn't the one that was revealed officially. For a side note, the R11 has a headphone jack on the bottom and we have already seen the top of the OP5 without a headphone jack. Look at OnePlus' header on twitter for example.

Actually, if you take a look at the official "leaked" picture on the @Oneplus Twitter account, you can clearly see that there is no jack at the top, so if there is one and the picture is real, it has to be at the bottom where it belongs...

I miss having the jack on the bottom, so much better for putting in my pocket with headphone in.

They took their time to add all this triangle shape noise on the bottom of the device on their previous leak so you couldn't see anything clearly, apart from the power button if editing it.
I guess the jack is there, on the bottom. They are hyping a lot about it. Maybe it crossed the road from the right to the left bottom of the phone.
That's my wild guess...

Thanks, I hadn't seen those latest ones yet!

I would like the mSD reader in an dual SIM holder as I'd likely buy the 64GB version of this phone assuming that the price difference between the 64GB and 128GB versions was at least double that of a 64GB mSD. If the headphone jack is dropped it will take stronger reviews to sway me to buy.
I already have high quality headphones so I definitely don't want inferior bluetooth audio. I'll put up with only having a FHD OLED display but would prefer QHD but if it's down to better battery life I'd accept FHD on a 5.5" screen. My current Nexus 5 IPS screen still looks very good for my day to day use, obviously no VR though.

I would say that previous Oppo phones bearing a resemblance to the OP flagships also had microSD slots, and that did not carry over to OP. So I wouldn't hold my breath on the microSD Slot though I certainly hope they decide to include one anyways. I doubt it as they'd want people to buy the higher storage model as well.

The "Why did the headphone jack cross the road?" Tweet by Carl Pei could also mean the headphone jack is on the other side of the Bottom USB port and not across the screen on the top.

I hope my reply is relevant to this thread.
When they actually implement a microSD slot to the OP5, I hope it is separate from the dual SIM slots.
My main concern is over the main storage technology, it should be UFS 2.1, then it will be snappy. No point providing such a huge storage like 256GB at the expense of performance.

It will almost certainly be UFS 2.1. If they include microSD then it will not be separate. Having one in the first place would be great.

Ah so that's what they meant by crossing the road

Hello
I've seen a spec sheet for op5 but It could be fake would you like to c it or should I leave it for the anticipation aspect?

I hope it will be 1080p because of battery life, QHD is nice and all but doesnt have any real advantage in normal use.
The SDcard slot - no. I had so much SDcards die with my data on it that even though I have a phone with it, I don't use an SDcard. They werent some cheap Chinese copies, they were SanDisk/Toshiba/Samsung.
Headphone jack - I don't really think they will shoot themselves in the foot by removing it. Besides, who will buy the Bullets then?

I really hope it has an SD card slot. IR would be nice too, but very unlikely. I don't care as much about the headphone jack as I am happy with my old Bluetooth earbuds, but I would rather have it than not.

I hope there is an SDCard Slot plus Dual Sim standy . Thats one of the prime factors i tick when buying a smartphone, and seriously why would they skip the head phone jack

Case with expansion for more memory

I would love to see a way to get more memory out of this thing. The 8GB isn't quite 6GB in reality and I can't fit all my games(modern combat 3, CS Portable, GTA 3, Asphalt 6 and Real Racing 2).
I have considered getting a thumb drive or something to connect to the micro usb port but then I thought it would be cleaner with a case and possible a SD/micro sd slot instead of just a thumb drive. Would also be nice to see a charging port on the case as well.
If that case existed it would cost at least 50$ so I guess you could sell the one you got now on ebay for the price you got it to a couentry that hasn't the tablet yet and buy the 16gb version.
You just can't go wrong and it's far more convenient.
Get a thin OTG cable, buy a SD card reader (or microSD, depending on which is thinner), plug it into your tablet and find a way to hide the wires into your case. A blurex case or some other big and bulky case may do the work of easily hiding the cable.

This was my thought at first but I doubt mine would be good enough to remove everytime I need to charge up, and that leads to more complications but I have seen the cell phone upgrades for ipod touch's that are built into the case so an SD card reader built into a case the size of a tablet could be done sleekly aside from a hump @ the USB port and maybe a hump at the charging port.
Just figure if I put this information out there it might get picked up and produced for not only the nexus 7, I believe there is a market as memory needs will always grow.

I was originally going to take it back but my mom bought it off of me and for $250 I might as well spend $100 more for a TF300 with 32GB memory, micro sd slot, 8MP decent rear cam, 10" screen and same processor setup with better screen and TV out. The TF300 is thinner feeling and much higher quality IMO.
The SD card slot will also go up to 32GB and I believe there are 64GB SD cards out now for fairly cheap($60) compared to the cost of on board memory. 16GB is just barely enough to run my games and then if I wanted my mp3's or movies for on the go it's 32GB+

I wouldn't recommend the TF line. I have the prime and between the prime, tf300 and tf700 they all seem to have the same IO problems even heavily modded. Jelly bean might have helped it but I'm not positive.

I do feel you on your need for space really but the thing I tried to tell you is that those 8gb for 50$ will make your life way easier than expecting manufacturers to do what you want and then pay a lot of green to have that bulky solution.
If you have enough with the 6gb you have left of memory just for apps I'd just root it and get the extra you need for media of the many USB sticks you may have at home. But really if you think your best solution is these type of covers then I hope you will find them soon.

I think it's in everyone's best interest. This gimmick could set a case apart and double it's value with $2 in parts. Hard to beat $10 for 16GB memory stick that ADDS to the 8GB I would have.
As I said, this is really no longer my problem but she wanted me to download videos to it and I noticed it's not even near 8GB of space stock, more like 5.8. So that $50 would get what? 11-12GB? no thanks again.
Not sure about the I/O problems I played with a TF300 at bestbuy and it was holding 60FPS solid in CS Portable while the Nexus 7 hangs around 45-55 and does it looking like crap(washed out, light bleeding, tons of dead pixels) but my mom doesn't care, I did when it came to dishing out another $50 for 11-12GB.
Think I might order one of these for $15 just to have around:
http://usb.brando.com/eagletec-usb-nanosac-micro-sd-card-reader_p00905c031d15.html
It may squeeze between a stretchy case and the back of the tablet. Would like to find a OTG cable that has a Y for charging but I haven't seen one yet. I also just found another possible strike for the Nexus 7:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6061/mhl-and-usbotg-on-the-nexus-7-mounting-usb-storage-not-supported
Seems like they tried to really lock down the memory and restrict the device to streaming. Sounds a lot like an apple thing to do, I mean seriously at this point apple starts sounding competitive again since Android really isn't nearly as plush or refined.

I dunno, my cousin has the TF300 and its nice. I had the original TF100 and loved it. I went with the N7 because of the processor upgrade and 7" form factor. I haven't heard many complaints with the TF300 or newer. The prime seemed to have issues but it was their first tegra3.

It's about 13.4 GB free with the 16 GB model. And maybe yours is just a defective unit. I'm getting 60fps and I don't have light bleed or dead pixels.

I have seen 3 with the problem so far. One custom rom(mine) and two stock roms. All have similar FPS and problems with screen. Light bleed is on everything IMO so yours having none is impossible. The dead pixels aren't dead so much as stuck during certain colors. You need to use a dead pixel tester to really notice, trust me it's there. Edit: seems the bleeding is very common. http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...k-your-nexus-7-tablet-backlight-bleeding.html

LOL, you've seen three with light bleed, so it's impossible for anyone not to have it?
I ran through the tests in that post and found no issues at all.
Would love to see something like this, at the moment I'm just relying on a 32GB Cruzer Fit drive. Pretty compact for the size.

All LED backlit devices have light bleed to the point you can see with brightness turned all the way up then look in the corners. I haven't had a LED back lit display on a phone, tablet or TV that didn't have some. Albeit, it's minimal on most phones these days tablets are big enough to display it clearly like "most" nexus 7's, maybe you have a freak. But how do we conclude? I would average out the results and by that point most will agree the nexus 7 has terrible light bleed. Excluding yours of course.
Would love to see a case like this too.

Well, I don't have any stuck or dead pixels but you're right. When I look closely there is a tiny bit of light bleed. Not really noticeable though.
Is it somehow possible to "add" this part inside the original case ? Then wire it and glue it ?
I know the more practical solution is a otg cable and and usb stick or adapter but why not pimping the nexus directly.
I would add a

Micro usb storage for nexus 10?

Hi there guys. So i saw this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021001 looking for a solution for my nexus 10.
After a bit research i thought why the hell there is no company with a micro usb storage for our tablets and that was enought to start digging with my company to see if we can produce them. It seems it's going well for our project but i was wondering how many people are really interested on this one. We are looking to produce a tiny micro usb storage that will fit niceley with nexus 10 and it can be used 24/7 as storage expantion.
so your turn how many of you would be interested on getting one of these?

This would be cool. As long as it can be used without messing up the Micro USB port and doesn't expose the microsd to breaking also.

This. Also hopefully with a good amount of memory and a discreet design, not like those long thumb drives.

yup im talking about a flash drive we are really considering of building. i believe that this would be better than a microsd card reader and definitely more discreet.
Sounds great if it doesn't protrude too much from the port - count me in!
what i want someone to make is a micro usb with a flex ribbon that can mount flush to the device. then the ribbon can wrap around back with a Microsd slot or usb. getting the connector out of the device can be like an ide ribbon in a pc just have a small plastic piece sticking out to pull on.
Definitely interested. It needs to be absolutely tiny though and preferably thin on the edges so your hands would just glide over it instead of hitting it when they go around the display.
Another thing which would be awesome, but I doubt it's possible, is to allow it to act as a us pass through (so it would have a micro usb plug female in there as well, although I'm afraid it would make it too big). This is so that you can connect a data cable to your device and access the extra storage all at the same time.
It is ridiculous we have to jump through these hoops because of el goog's totally irrational and fundamentalist/religious at its core, war on expandable storage in the Nexus line of products (well, my Nexus 1 didn't have that restriction, to be fair).
Anyway, the design would have to be such that the reader somehow "clings" to the body of N10 (and probably, you'd want it to be useable with other devices too) to where it is secure enough and won't fall out from an accidental contact with one's hand etc. The headphone jack is nearby and can not be obstructed. Plugging anything into the microUSB jack would take ability to charge device while in use.
If anyone is in it to make money, it almost feels a better way is to take it "all the way":
- Exynos should have native pins for expandable storage, that are left "hanging" (prolly pulled up/down) OR
- there could be a built-in USB hub on the mobo OR
- one could up with a small f-factor PCB with one
the goal is to manage to modify the case to install 100% functional microSD reader - one that doesn't obscure/use the microUSB plug.
While on it, figure out the charging circuit and provide a barrel plug for 5v/3A charging. There has to be a few hundred N10 owners that would gladly spend $200 to have their N10's modded (and wty's voided). After all, they wuz crazy enough to buy it in the first place
A decent haul for an EE student/enthusiast with a steady hand, a Dremel and a good soldering iron.
I'd make the purchase in a heartbeat :good:!

Can you provide any more info about the profile of the device your considering building? Specifically - the shape, how far it would protrude, etc?
I'd love to see a sketch or two. If you streamline it enough (rounded edges, minimal chance of stressing the micro-usb jack), you'll be able to sell it to a whole lot of phone owners, not just us.
I would absolutely buy one.
I think the demand would clearly be very high for this product. Considering the size of the market of tablet owners looking for OTG cables, etc... I think it would sell extremely well. I, for one, would definitely by one the minute it was available.
This one seems a good idea:

Hi guys,
first i am glad to see that a lot of people are interested not only to support this project but also contribute with ideas. The goal is to create a product that will not get on the way of the user. As i already said i own a nexus 10 and i am working based on my everyday use of the tablet. My first designs are for a really small casing that will fit exactly to the body of our beloved nexus so it wont be able to move by accident. I am going for like 0.5cm width but we cannot at this point be sure for the final products dimensions.
I loved the idea of the flex cord that a user provided above but unfortunately that means loosen connectivity and i believe that it would get in the way of the user. Still it definitely gave my couple of ideas.
rgomesf i am already aware of this product but as a user i believe that in my hands its going to break in a day.
I think that the best approach would be a solid micro-usb unit for the nexus with a small cable-adaptor to connect it to USBs in computers in order to transfer data.
I am always open to more suggestions.

Is this still happening? I am very interested.
And the cable-adaptor could double up as a pass-through to connect another USB device? Or is that pushing the capabilities of the micro-usb port?
If you're tailoring it specifically toward the Nexus 10, perhaps it would be possible to decrease how much it juts out by running along the side? Not in the direction of the headphone port, but upwards near the power button.
Not sure if that's actually possible though.

Cunning Samsung, the real reason why Note 4 battery is only 20 mah larger.

As we all know, the battery is the Note 4 is virtually the same as the one used in Note 3, it's only 20 mah larger in capacity. So why didn't samsung just stay at 3200 mah?
The real reason I found out after many nights of careful analysis is that Samsung does not want use to use Note 3 battery on the Note 4, therefore it would promote their battery sales, which makes up a substantial portion of their income. Samsung engineers obvious is not capable of figuring out how to make a improvement on the battery capacity despite note 4 is so much heavy than the Note 3. So the other goal achieved is to save face, so that they would not get criticism from the public for not improve on the battery capacity, despite there is virtually no piratical benefit makes the phone 19% heavier.
Like if you agree.
I see the shape of the battery has changed significantly.

Note 4:
The Note 4 battery is much skinnier and longer. It is possible that this is just a side effect of having a new internal layout in the phone - the Galaxy Alpha also has a very skinny and long battery.
I actually prefer this design since they no longer have to use the crappy SIM and SD card 2-in-one slot, instead they have the SIM and SD card as a separate slot.
What a strange shape for a phone battery.
The weight is not symmetric.
The shape already change, means even without extra 20mAh, you also can't use Note 3 battery on it.

Yeah, why is Samsung constantly change the back layout? Even generation has different slot places and battery shape and the way you take off your back cover.
One reason the battery shape is different is to allow the SD and SIM cards to be swapped out without removing the battery.
A lot of phones don't have a removable battery... having one is better despite the changes.
Yes, it's true every year samsung makes a new battery size. It's normal. Every year, I sell my previous note with batteries included, and re-buy the new ones. But I would rather that anyways, I sell them for a decent price, use a coupon code every year to get them for $25 a piece, and the newer batteries have a higher capacity since they haven't worn out.
Plus, I get little upgrades, like last year samsung released the battery+charger holder combo for the same $25!
I understand it can be a little annoying, but you wouldn't want a year or two year old battery in your phone when new ones are so cheap anyways.
Also, S5 was the first Samsung to get this long "style" battery. And I hope it looks like the one in that picture, I'm so used to the black, but that shiny silver would be cool. I don't remember seeing that in any unbox videos tho, maybe that's the note edge?
When will XDA get rid off these ridiculous signatures?
Anyway, every year I have to sell or throw away many batteries, what a waste. The batteries are so expensive and bad for the environment.
This is one of the more idiotic posts I've seen in a while. The internal layout of phones constantly change based on developing technology. The addition of the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor in the S5/Alpha/Note 4 along with the new UV and SpO2 sensors in the Note 4 all necessitate changes to internal layout. As SOCs change in power consumption and heat dissipation, there may have to be changes in cooling layouts. The new ISOCELL sensors and flashes may have different sizes. Also with the new metal frames, Samsung may have tweaked the position of the internal radios and GPS.
In fact the S5, Alpha, and Note 4 all share similar battery proportions (tall, narrow batteries) which are quite different from the S4 and Note 3. It's not a huge surprise as all the phones share similar SOCs and sensors.
They change the battery shape to accommodate the hardware changes. It's really nothing more. It would be impossible to use the Note 3 battery with the Note 4 internals and keep the phone shape.

Unfortunately the shipping ones are black. All the silver ones that I've seen are all marked "SAMSUNG CONFIDENTIAL", so they may indicate a prototype / non-retail device.

The Note 2 had a different battery than the Note 3... I don't recall any updated phone being capable of falling back and using it's replacements battery. I really hope this didn't tax your thoughts too much.

[Q] Pre-ordered Note 4 and already having 2nd thoughts?

So I pre-ordered my Note 4 through T-Mobile and a leak has come out about the Nexus 6.
Why am I having second thoughts to cancel the Note 4 and wait to see what Nexus could bring.

Maybe this will help? No spen, SD card, removable battery, multi window, mouse actions, etc. The note series is really the best big phone out there. Not because of hardware, but Samsung software really takes advantage of it. Stock android just doesn't.
But...it is impressive that moto fit a 5.9" screen in a small body about the size if the note 4.
Then do it. All talk.
Best thing about having Jump 1 is being able to jump whenever I feel like!!! If I dont like the Note 4, I'll just Jump to the Nexus 6.

If T-Mobile carries it. Which they won't if it doesn't have WiFi calling

You are right it is the best big phone out there, I played with it at Best Buy.
*The S-pen I really liked it, almost like writing on paper.
*SD Card - I don't mind losing it. I'm actually waiting for my 2nd 64Gb microsd replacement from sandisk, somehow they always go to a locked state. (I have 3 more sitting at home since I lost the receipts SanDisk won't replace them)
*Removable battery - I've never swapped for a bigger battery on my GS3 or my GS4. Thought the power saving feature will come handy in some occasions.
* Multi-Window - always had it rarely ever used it. I'm sure it's better on the Note 4 because of the bigger screen.
*Mouse action w\ S-pen - Now that will be useful for me.
*samsungalaxypromotions.com - I don't think NEXUS would give me $200 for my old GS3.
*Speaker - Really loud on the Note 4, kinda gets distorted at max level.
I've never had a nexus before, just a little jealous they get OS updates quickly lol.

Yup this is the best nexus feature. But most Samsung devices get pretty good development support. So even if T-Mobile doesn't release it quickly, you'll at least get it a few months quicker when the international version gets it.
But you really don't use multi window? That's one of the beet features on android IMO.
As for the SD card, I bought a Samsung one a whole ago and haven't had any issues with it.

Good point, I did turned off wifi calling for about 3 weeks just a couple days ago and fortunately coverage is good in my area.
Questions for Note 3 users: If you install the Google launcher do you lose some of the S-Pen features?

Nope. It's a touchwiz thing. You can use any launcher. You really don't lose anything by switching to a different launcher. (I had a note 3 before my S5).

i RMAed a 64gb microSD with sandisk earlier this year, and they didn't ask for a receipt. they asked me to take 2 pictures of the card (front and back intact), 2nd set of pics was the card destroyed in 2 pieces (front and back as well), and my replacement card was on its way the next 2 days. i believe that sd card has a 10yr warranty, and i RMA it 1yr later after purchase, so it makes sense that a receipt is not required for a product that has only been out for 1yr only, or maybe i just got lucky with a nice rep.
I will try giving another call.

Yep! Nothing else on the market even comes close, but that's IF you need all those functions. I do, so the Note is the only choice. The Spen and oneNote are things I can't live without. Otherwise if you don't need that, then yeah go for the N6 save some money and don't deal with Samsung anymore.
If the nexus6 had 128gb onboard, I would have gone for that. 16 and 32gb phones are just too small.
The only trepidation I have about the note4 is how long it going to takes before Samsung releases androidL on the device. They always take forever. The note3 is still in 4.4.2, when all the Motorola phones and most HTC phones have all been upgraded.

i actually noticed that too. i had to lower it at best buy. Im hoping its a demo software bug that can be fixed. On the other hand, my level on headphones with my note 3.... i sometimes wish i could crank up the volume louder so maybe the note 4 will make a difference it volume levels.
If anythign, get the Note 4 and later on just flash a AOSP L rom on it...
You will loose samsung features but then again you can also flash back to a Samsung Rom...
Best of both worlds...

I wonder???

Could Oneplus be having us on all this time and the 3.5mm jack is actually still part of the 6T?
https://twitter.com/oneplus/status/1048905784434851840
You could see the charging port cutout in the case pictures but not one for a jack. It could be the port isn't visible in the pictures because it's inboard enough not to be visible in the head on shots of the cases.
My guess however would be that much like the notch speculation with the Pixel 3 XL this is probably wishful thinking. I'd be happy to be wrong...
there are zero excuses to remove already existing and well proven features that previous phone has.
There is zero tolerance for any stupidity and retardation of any seo who knows better what I need !!
I'm waiting for sams s10plus to replace my trash oneplus6, hopefully Samsung isn't retarded yet and will deliver proper phone with zero compromises.
Compromise is often an opinion rather than hard fact. I never use the headphone jack as I went wireless years ago for my gym cans; this makes the port lost space to me as filling that space with battery would be better than losing it to something I don't use.
I'm wondering if you've been on Samsung lately because there has been bootloader shenanigans and other issues over there, to my knowledge zero compromise does not exist in the mobile phone world. You kinda got to pick your poison.
Well that was a deplorable gimmick! Just an announcement date and a let down date at that. Oneplus are taking the pi$$ now!
Just as bad as Apple's "planet" wallpaper hiding their hideously large notch in the iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR.
