Which Note 8 should I buy?
International Version
Unlocked Version
Sprint Version
I heard the processor for the International Version is best I think it stats with an E. Should I get that?
I would like to root.
Does it matter or should I just order one directly from Sprint?
Will this work with Sprint?

you said sprint, sprint is cmda... meaning, exynos WILL NOT WORK. no international phone, you must buy snapdragon. now you have two choices carrier locked, and carrier unlocked. both have a locked boot loader and are not currently capable of root. if you purchase the phone out right it does not really matter which version you get. if you buy sprint locked after 50 days on their network they will carrier unlock the phone. the only true difference is carrier bloatware/ software which I'm hearing can be flashed using odin

There are SOME radio differences but I agree it shouldn't matter.

Thank you, that is what I need to know. Now what about getting a S8 or S8 Plus instead? Are those rootable? I mean does it even matter any more? The only thing I really want root for is Youtube Ad Block, but what the crap, mine as well just pay 10 bucks a month and get Youtube Red and allow my phone to update it self all the time.

from what I hear it is possible to root the s8, but it limits your max battery charge to 80%? kinda a **** trade off if you ask me.
so I'm like you I thought I must have root, my last android was a Nexus with a completely unlocked boot loader and I flashed custom roms when I tired of my current rom. that was four years ago and I've been jailbroke iOS since. do you still need root?
most people will say no. if they say absolutely the main arguments I've heard are for xposed(which doesn't even work on android 7) and viper4android (or some similar name, a sound tweak I think) besides those two, removing bloatware, and hosts file ad blocking.
my personal experience: I will be giving up an unlocked boot loader by purchasing the note 8. this mean no custom roms. I haven't given up hope for a future possible root method, but I am willing to accept that it may never come or when it does we can only charge to 80% or something else ridiculous. I don't need root, I would like it, but I will compromise.
tldr;probably not, especially if you are willing to sub to YouTube red for 10$ a month.

The issue is that the Snapdragons have locked bootloaders but you need a SD version to use the Sprint network. It doesn't matter if you buy a Note 8 or an S8, the issue with the locked bootloader is the same.
For me personally, I need root because a lot of the apps I have use root. If you only wanted to block ads on YouTube, it's probably unnecessary and far more hassle than it's worth.

Sorry, I can't provide any guidance in this area. I'm in Australia and don't have experience with the inclusions/exclusions on specific American networks such as Sprint. I do know they use CDMA technology, which the Exynos SoC doesn't support.
Hopefully, one of the other enlightened souls on this forum can help you with this question.

I am on Sprint and am currently utilizing what I posted above as working...I am still finding out other working options as well...ask me about an option and I'll tell you if it is working on the unlocked version.

The Sprint Version will cut out the download booster and hot spot unless your plan includes it but include calling plus features which include their version of the Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling for surfing over calls....but we already have that with Wi-Fi calling...Sprint also has Bloat software such as VVM but I install Google Voice for voicmail...it is up to you...at this point I have found no function lost.
Oops...I forgot to mention that they may update more frequently or sooner

That is extremely important. Do I have this right? If I buy the unlocked version. Can I surf the internet while on the phone with the unlocked version from Amazon or Samsung or do I need to buy the Spring Version?

When I called my wife on Wi-Fi Calling i was able to surf the web as well...I'll double check tomorrow when she is awake though
I have the unlocked version arriving soon and I will be using it with sprint. (With the free 1 year promo)
AFIK only the sprint and unlocked versions are whitelisted to work on sprint. Any other snapdragon models you will need to request a manual request to add your IMEI to the sprint database.
And I believe the Exynos models isn't compatible with CDMA at all, something with licensing or patent issues with Qualcomm.

Oh I mean not on wifi - calling I am just talking about 4G LTE. I mean I have the note 3 right now. LOL. I know super old. I can talk on the cell network 4G LTE and surf the internet at the same time. Can you do that with the Unlocked Version and the Sprint Version or one or the other?

I recently bought a used S5 (after trying a Z2 and LG G3) and was looking forward to hitting it up with some custom ROM goodness. Unfortunately it turned out to be an AT&T branded phkne which I soon discovered was a pain in the ass to do anything with...
So I was wondering what the chances are of there ever being a Marshmallow custom rom for this model? I can deal with having to stick with the same version of android as stock, but I can't deal with going back a version just to have a custom rom!
Unfortunately, stock marshmallow is soooo laggy and crap, I don't think I can deal with it long term. It feels slower than my previous budget phone from the same period!
I know that there is only root available on LP, but does that prevent you making a MM custom rom? Surely you only need a custom recovery to be able to do this?

The model is AT&T's fraud, so of course not. Courses have been changed in court (and trade-in) before though, and in sideloading in 2015 when GeoHot's TowelRoot was adequate to go sporting with the secure boot bits and unlock the bootloader to set up alternative ROMs. AT&T (alone) claims to have 3500 security peeps on (which I guess you can test if you have a business contract or work for AT&T just to get half-timely patches.) Judging from the recent conference reports there is plenty of fooling the bootloader around to do; but it's harder to do if it's your daily driver, isn't it? Get your (TT/Helium?) backup regime set and try Woot.com for an HTC One M9 ($137ish?) until the ol' Snapdragon 801 / Knox 2.3 TZ get p0wned...publicly.
Betting that the Samsung Ethereum mining cluster made out of old S5s was not done without ROMming a few.

Thanks for your reply, though to be honest I don't really understand much of it beyond AT&T are gits.
What exactly makes an AT&T S5 different to any other version? Is it just some code in the bootloader?

Not exactly, but close. If the phone detects an operating system other than official software (or close-to-official) then the phone simply locks up and refuses to boot. It tells you to take the phone to an ATT store, but you really don't have to, you just have to flash official software back via ODIN.
I've had it 10 days (assuming relevant), and after entering the developer options, I am not able to find the OEM unlock options.

Return it, and buy an unlockable device.
If it's like the AT&T version, you need the unlock code from T-Mobile. The option to disable a carrier lock is not in developer mode.

Your BL is locked, there is nothing for you to gain be enabling OEM unlock. The people with unlockable devices have to enable OEM to flash twrp...you cannot therefore it is pointless.

I was going to buy an unlocked note 9 from best buy but they said they did not think there phone had the 600mhz B71 band that t junk mobile is suppose

but I am thinking about returning this phone to t junk mobile I just get the unlocked one from best buy
this phone would not be that bad if I can get rid of t junk mobile ad on boot up logo and jingle sound but I found an app silent boot to fix that but
that is adding anther app on my phone that I really do not want

if so and you can not root a phone you just paid $1000. for would it not be best just to get a phone that can be rooted to get rid of all the dam junk apps

I see venom has a rom that suppose to work on a ms-n960u so what do you need to do to install that if no root is available
The simple answer is that you can't unlock the bootloader on the US market phone. You haven't been able to do so since the Galaxy S7. I think it likely has a lot to do with KNOX integration for security reasons. The complicated answer is that there were ways to root the S7 by flashing a developer bootloader (engboot or something like that). The catch is that while you could root it, the phone would run like crap, overheat, bad battery life, etc. Some claimed to have decent success with it though. Likely something similar will happen with the Note 9 as well as. An unlocked phone is carrier unlocked, meaning you can activate it on any supported carrier. It has nothing to do with the bootloader.
Long story short, no, you can't unlock the bootloader, no, you can't flash twrp, and you'll find actual development for the US market phone to be essentially non-existent. If that is important to you, return this phone. Coming from rooting and flashing all of my phones prior to the S7, I honestly don't miss it. IMO, there's nothing to be gained, and it's a huge time suck. Life is too short and I'm too busy to spend an evening setting things up for the 5th time, troubleshooting battery life issues, etc. Not to mention that my job related security apps aren't going to work on a rooted phone.
Now, as far as "junk apps" not sure what you mean. These phones are now pretty clean actually, and most things can be uninstalled or disabled from within stock android. And as I found out many times in the past, if something is unable to be disabled, it's probably for good reason.
As far as ads, also not sure what you mean. Web browser ads can be blocked through extensions that Samsung browser supports. In app ads can be eliminated by paying for the app. Really, if you can't afford $3 for an app that you frequently use, I'd question how you can afford a $1000 phone.

That's incorrect. The unlocked version is fully compatible with T-Mobile.

Samsung has been locking bootloaders since the S7? It's been a few years. Even when someone found a way to beat it, it was severely limiting to your device. You said you're not new here. This is pretty common knowledge with Samsung devices.

Yes. And they've been working on the S9 too, which still can't be beaten. And a proper way to unlock the S8, without limiting your battery to 80%.
And why exactly is T-Mobile "junk"? Maybe you need a different carrier.

I think your problems go well beyond the color of your boot screen. Seek help. The kind of help you need we're not qualified to provide here. How often do you see the boot logo screen anyway?

is anyone working on rooting this sm-n960u phone and twrp??
I see venom has a rom that suppose to work on a ms-n960u so what do you need to do to install that if no root is available

There are two types of "unlocked": carrier and bootloader. BestBuy meant carrier unlocked, or the N960U1. The hardware is equivalent to the carrier version (N960U; there's only one model now for all the carriers), and the only software difference is that it doesn't come with the carrier bloat. Same hardware and firmware means it supports B71. However, it cannot be bootloader unlocked.
You have two options if you want a bootloader unlock: the N9600 or the N960F. Neither supports B71, but both do support B66. Remember, B71 isn't all that important yet. It's only been rolled out in a few places and TMO is concentrating more on 5G right now.
The N960F has a mod you can flash to enable TMO WiFi Calling and VoLTE and the other carrier features. I'm running it now and it works fine. It did sort of convert my phone to a Chinese variant, which meant I was stuck with the super aggressive Smart Manager instead of Device Manager, but I modified it to let me use Device Manager again. I might be posting the modified version if I can get permission.
The fact is that, yes, Samsung kind of beat the rooters. However, anyone who really wants to root usually just gets the F or 0 variant, and those who can live without make do with the plethora of non-root tweaks. There are actually quite a few adblockers and package disablers designed for TouchWiz that work without root, such as DNS66 or notSABS.
I don't know anything about flashing modified TouchWiz ROMs on the U variant, but it might be possible. It won't have root though.
Really, if you want a rootable Samsung, go with the N960F. You can get it on Amazon new with Prime for under $900 (without Prime it's $800). It has TWRP and Magisk works fine. If you want WFC PM me so I can share my modified mod (heh). I'll also be working on a set of other miscellaneous modifications to TouchWiz.

So what you are saying in the current Samsung world rooting is a thing of the past! Samsung won the hacking war!!! and us pe-ons are mostly stuck with carrier banded phones or unlocked that loses carrier bands and options!
Unless we pay some merc to kidnap you and have some doctor transfer your brain power into are brains so we have the brain power to hack and mod are locked phones then if we are kind have that brain power transferred back to your brains!!!!

I currently have a Galaxy S5 on Verizon's original unlimited data plan. I rooted the phone with Android Lollipop years ago and have been using it ever since. The phone has tons of lag and a lot of apps now require Marshmallow or newer operating system to run. I've been looking at the S10 as my next phone and have a few questions:
1. I rooted my S5 and would naturally like to root the S10. I know that Verizon goes the extra mile to lock the boot loader and to discourage us from rooting. What is my best bet for being able to root? I mean, should I get a developer version or maybe an international version? I do understand that it's a bit premature to be asking such questions, but with the history of Verizon's versions of the Galaxy line, what should I expect? sadly, I haven't keept up with the phone world in a few years.
2. Seeing as the S10 will be a five model jump for me is root even all that necessary any more? I don't install custom ROMS or tweek the phone all that much anyways. Mostly I just need a way to eliminate ads in apps (I use Adaway for this now), a way to remove bloatwear, and a way to back up apps and data (I've been using Titanium backup for this).
3. What can I expect in terms of advances or complications in the newest version of android? What has changed with support for data cards, rooting and the like?
That's it. Now the experts can chime in.
Damn your latest phone is a S5 yeah you're going to have a hell of a lot and sugar be shocked LOL I bought everyone from the S4 up.
The question is... which S10 to get so that I will be able to root? I know Verizon locks the boot loader. Then again, do I really need to root? what would you recommend having moved away from the S4s?

Based on your query it would seem you don't need much customization so getting the device with an lunocked bootloader may not be your best bet. I would expect Samsung to follow it's development the same as previous releases. You should be able to acquire the Exynos or Snapdragon variants with unlocked bootloaders as long as you purchase an International variant. Not sure if it's important to you but based on early benchmarks, the Snapdragon variant has now surpassed the Exynos in processing speeds.
I'm thinking about switching from T-Mobile to Verizon, but have zero experience with Verizon and would like to confirm that there won't be any problem using their network if the phone is rooted, modded, running a custom rom/kernal, etc. I can't get a straight answer from them.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've always heard it's impossible to unlock the bootloader on Verizon's own branded phones. I won't be buying from them, however, but directly from Google. Being able to unlock the bootloader is imperative for me. I have rooted and modded every one of the phones I've owned, starting in 2010 with my Nexus One

Because I've been on T-Mobile since before it was even called T-Mobile (when there were only dumb phones), the only knowledge I have about Verizon is based on what I've read here over the years, mainly complaints that if you buy a phone from Verizon, it will be locked down, completely and forever, even once it's been paid off, and even if you buy it outright. Buying a Verizon-branded phone, therefore, is out of the question. But I do, unfortunately, need to switch to Verizon's network because T-Mobile's coverage is unacceptably spotty outside of urban areas. Yes, they are always building out their infrastructure and buying spectrum, and now they have acquired Sprint's, but I need reliable service, right now, in the suburbs of New York, where I visit my parents regularly now that they are getting on in years.
So, to make a long story short I am buying an unlocked Pixel 5 from Google and would like to make sure that it will work on Verizon's network once it's been rooted, modded, etc. If anyone recently has used an unlocked, rooted phone on Verizon, I'd greatly appreciate your advice.

There are a bunch of rooted phones on VZW network with the P4 line so I can't see why the P5 would be any different. Personally, I'd unlock it and leave it not rooted, then test it out. Then root it and test it. If any test fail then you still have a window to return it. And if it doesn't work (which I highly doubt) then it's a matter of priorities, coverage vs rooting. Dollars to doughnuts it will work rooted. G Pay might be another story but I presume you don't really care about that.

Root will not make any difference at all only gpay maybe but like you I've rooted all my phone's on lots of networks in UK and all been fine so will be fine for you I'm sure

Thanks for the encouraging info and the great idea of testing it out, which made me realize that I can get a prepaid sim from verizon and see if they can activate the Pixel 5 after I unlock and root it. Thanks
