Google Photos Problem - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi everyone.
I cannot for the life of me get Google Photos to work properly on this phone. I have reset (both from the settings menu and recovery) and each time I install GP it either hangs on "Getting photos" or it duplicates everything or says "Getting ready to backup, XX photos left to backup" or a combination of all three.
Now the duplicates aren't on my phone, nor do i have two of everything on photos.google.com either. Looking at the information for each image it seems to be separating the one on the device and the one that's backed up.
New photos will still get backed up, so that part of it is working at least.
I have tried old versions of the app too.
Anyone else having issues or might have a solution?

Tried all that and stil l the same. I've read that the auto back ups can play up with photos that have been copied onto the phone from a PC. Maybe I'll just have to delete all the local files and view them in the app. It seems to work fine with new photos I take.

Same here having lot of wierd issues with note 8 which I didn't have with s8 plus. Automatic call recorder not working, Google photos same exact problem as yours, sometimes I am in call and after few mins other person cannot hear me even though I can hear them, call will continue in background for few seconds even though I have disconnected the call.
Beginning to feel frustrated and may go back to my beloved S8 plus.
Anyone else having the wierd call issue?

"Can't play video." Google Photos App on Note 8
I can't get a single video to play through the Google Photos App on my Note 8. Videos play fine through the Samsung Browser but when in the app, I get an error every single time. I've logged in and out of the app, uninstalled/reinstalled app, cleared cache, reset all app preferences, and nothing fixes it.
Anyone else have this problem? Know a fix?

I had the same issue in my Note 8. I haven't deleted any of my photos. Follow these steps
1. Unmount SD CARD and clear cache of "Google Photos" if you don't use SD Card you might need to backup all your photos to your computer and delete from your Internal Memory.
2. Clear Cache & Clear Data of Google Photos
3. System Settings -> Apps - > Find
Google Play Services
Google Play Services for Instant Ap..
Google Play Store
and Clear Cache & Clear Data for all the 3 apps
4. Open Google Photos and allow all permission and you will start seeing Getting Photos for few secs and it will start fetching your backed up photos instantly.
5. After that you can Mount your SD Card.

Backup My Settings Issue - How to remove from Google Servers.

Ive found an issue with google backup on 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs, the issue indicates that its related to my Google account rather than my phone (nexus one). Wondering if anyone else has seen the issue.
Cannot remove google's 'backed up' data from my account. I have previously used the google backup function (privacy settings - backup my data) which copies details of my bookmarks, wireless network keys, and installed applications on to googles servers. The purpose being when you log in to a phone it will automatically download all this information and 'recover' the phone.
The problem that im having now is that I cannot remove the 'backed up' data from googles servers.
I have....
1. Unckecked 'Backup my data' - which gives me the confirmation of:
"are you sure you want to stop backing up your settings and application data and erase all copies on googles servers"
(leave the phone for 48hrs to ensure that everything has been removed from google)
2. Wipe my phone, factory restore it.
3. Sign in to phone.
4. All settings are recovered to the phone............
I have tried about 10 different ROMS, complete wipe on each install, and complete format of SD card (no ext part).
anyone have any suggestions, done a good bit of searching through google support forums and found several other people having the same issue.

anyone solve this?
I too am having a similar problem...anyone know how to solve this.
I have found a work around which involves disabling the restore just before you set up the google account on first boot, however i would still like to remove the backup data from the google servers.
Thanks D.

make a new google account, lol

Load a fresh ROM, then either:
1 - Unchecked the 'backup to Google's option when first signing in, or
2- Let everything restore, then remove everything from your phone (which will then be saved your Google backup).
If you do 2, then 1, and never re-enable 1, you should get the results you're looking for...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I just got an N1 coming from a mt3g and wanted a fresh start.
What I did on mine was skip the initial login on first boot from a new ROM, unchecked the backup my data thing, then added my google account.
Once my contacts, calendar, & mail sync'd, I went back and checked to backup my data, unchecked it, got the prompt you were talking about.
Waited a day, then checked the box again and nothing has sync'd from the mt3g.

Google Play Services Error

I am getting a lot of the GPS errors. I updated am still getting it. I can not open Gmail App because of this.
And I just updated Oxygen.
Try going into apps making sure show system apps is enabled and clear these two system cache's (clear all data) on Google services. Then for good measure go to storage clear cache and reboot. After that you will need to sign back in but all apps and there data is still there. Hope that helps has done for me in the past especially after a play services update.
Never attached screenshots
Just tried the clearing and all is good. Now I need root and to Pixelize it and i will be happy.
Any other tips? made no difference to mine.... getting hacked off with the Oneplus 3T and I've only had it 4hrs! no google apps will work... music... gmail... hangouts... all say the same " google play service error" please contact the developer
I did a clean install and started over again... seems good now.
Coming from a x5 Pro this thing is dam fast!

Google Photos backup issue?

Since moving to the Note 9 I have been having issues with Google Photos backing up to my Google account. It has been working perfectly for years on my Note 8, Note 5, etc...
Now, on the Note 9, the backup sticks at "Getting ready to back up" until I go into a folder that backup is enable on and toggle the option off then back on. This makes the application begin the backup. I have it configured for High Quality but it did the same when I tried Original quality settings.
I initially though it was a problem with photos that I moved over from my Note 8, but I cleared out all of my on device photos and it is still having this same problem. I tried all the usual steps of clearing Photos cache and data. Uninstall and reinstall, clear Play Services Cache and data. I haven't performed a factory reset, but I don't feel like taking the time to reconfigure everything for something that might not even work.
Does anybody else have this problem also?
No issues. Did you disable any services?
Photos works fine on my 960F/DS...
Yes and I can't figure out how to solve the problem. What have you found?

Hello,
I have similar issue on a French SM-N960F/DS (Dual Sim)
Somehow, the Google Photos App is stuck while retrieving my Photos (from Google Web Server) an I can only view a couple of them (the most recent ones), without being able to scroll down and view the older ones.
Also when taking photos, it wont upload them
And finally if I try to toggle the switch (for backup) inside one directory, I have a popup asking me to first enabe Backup and Sync in Google Photos Apps, which is ALREADY enabled.
I suspect this is linked to the SD Card.
I removed it (just unmount it is sufficient, no need to physically remove it) and I reconfigured the Native Samsung Photo App to store all photos on the internal memory.
And now Google Photos Apps is just working fine. Full access on old pictures and proper upload.
EDIT1:
I have RE-mounted the SD Card without changing the Samsung Photo App settings, which means all taken Pictures are still stored on the Internal Memory.
By doing so, when I get into the Google Photos App, I see the new picture, and I see that there is "1" new photo to be uploaded on the upper right corner, but it is stuck there. The round icon keeps circling and it never gets uploaded (I cannot see the new Picture on the Google Photos website from my laptop)
If I Unmount the SD Card again, then the new Picture gets properly uploaded and the App is not stuck.
There is definitively an issue with the SD card.
This is quite annoying as I store lots of TV Series on my SD Card, hence I have it always inside the Phone.......
EDIT2:
I have formatted the SD Card from the Phone menu and now it works fine , even if the Card is present.
EDIT3:
I have copied back 10x MKV Files onto the SD Card (while Note9 was connected to laptop), and now the problem re-appears. If I delete the directory containing these MKV, back to normal, functioning fine.....
Then I tried to configure the Samsung Photo App to store taken pictur on the SD Card. In that case, the Google Photos App is correctly synching the new picture.
So now I'm more thinking there is an issue with some of the files stored on the SD Card. This card had been used for +2 years on a Galaxy Note 4 without issue. I do think the Note 9 might have a flaw while handling content from the SD Card.... ?
EDIT4: SOLVED
I just simply put a text file called ".nomedia" inside the directory containing the MKV files and VOILA
Hope that helps someone else

I also had the same issue since I got my Note 9, photos was stuck uploading, I uninstalled the App and cleared the cache still the same, upon reading your forum. I bought 512gb SDCard was working perfectly fine since PIE 9, after rolling back to Oreo; I unmounted the SD card closed Google Photos and checked the camera setting to make sure it was Internal. I opened Google Photos and it had already uploaded screenshot I took earlier and also seen in online. I then re-mounted the card by rebooting the phone for fresh install and worked normal again. Took a few screen shot's and google photos was uploading them as normal.
So anyone else check your card first, baffled me for a few day's

Google Photos not showing all "downloaded" images?

Hi guys,
I am wondering if someone is experiencing similar issue with Google Photos on Pixel 4 XL.
I have been using a 3rd party Wallpaper app called Wallcraft for years now. I had used it on my OG Pixel and Pixel 2 as well, never had any problems with it.
Since I bought my P4XL, not all wallpapers that I download through the Wallcraft application shows up in Google Photos.
The app creates a folder called WallpapersCraft in system memory inside the Pictures folder, if I navigate there in File manager all the downloaded wallpapers are there, but only a few shows in Google Photos.
Any idea why is it happening?
I have already tried:
- Clearing the cache and data of Wallcraft app
- Clearing the cache and data of Google Photos app
- Deleted the WallpapersCraft folder in File manager and let the app re-create it.
- Uninstalled and reinstalled Wallcraft app.
Nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions?
I guess you have to turn on "backup and sync". It should upload all missing pictures and you should see them in google photos. At least i think that this is how google photos operates.

I don't think so. I have never had to do that on my previous phones. In fact I still have my Pixel 2 and it works as intended without sync.
Also, I don't want to sync the Wallpapers folder because then it will put them in the same folder where my camera photos are. I want them in a separate folder.
It is just really weird how it shows some of the wallpapers, but not all. I can't figure out how the Google Photos app decide which ones to show....
It is something to do with Google Photos, I just downloaded a random Gallery application from the Store and it shows all wallpapers.

Question Google Photos stuck on Getting your Photos on ZF8 *SOLVED*

*SOLVED*
Deleted whatsapp images folder which had null images in it and now it works. Weird thing is I don't have folder backup on and what does that folder have to do with getting my photos?
I have had a lot of devices including the Zenfone6 before the Zenfone 8 (8/256) I just got and I have never had any issues with Google Photos.
On this device however Google Photos does not work.
It is stuck on "Getting your photos..." for days without getting any photos what so ever, and without getting my photos it can't start to backup my new photos.
I have tried
Rebooting
Updating
Uninstalling
Installing
Clear Cache
Clear Storage
Turn Off
Turn On
Restart
I uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but it does nothing. I also monitor transfer speeds and I can see that it isn't doing anything. My network is fast, around 300/50 speeds so this should be more than plenty to load some low res previews.
And best result I got was that it got about 10% of my pictures before just getting stuck again.
Without Google Photos the device for me is not usable.
I am using Photos since day one and it works well. Sounds like you may have to check all app permissions if they are set. Additionally finish the process of other Google apps like Store, services, mail etc as you might have missed some access allowance somewhere.
And it will not hurt to update the phone with Today's new version.

I have finished all other google services. I have given Photos all access and data access for wifi and mobile. Also if I would have missed something it wouldn't explain how I once got like 10% of my images, which I know after last reinstall don't get again.
Installed latest update. Checked all settings
I have no power savings on, unlimited data allowed. Wifi or Mobile makes no difference.
Unlimited Mobile data usage set for Photos. But it just doesn't do anything.
Due to some MFA applications I need daily I can't factory reset without it being a hassle for a lot of people without having another phone.
So what's another good small Android phone in 2021?
So After deleting my Whatsapp Images folder it started working. The odd thing here is that I don't even hav Folder backup enabled, for any folder none the less for the Whatsapp folder.
This is obviously a bug in Photos where it checks folders.
Not sure if this helps, but on my Pixel, the Photos doesn't always sync up new files that are externally loaded (not taken through the camera). However, if I open the Files app and browse to the folder, it gets refreshed. This might help someone as I spent quite some time trying to get the app to recognize the new files.
