Losing Magisk Root After Reboot - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'm running stock ROM with TWRP recovery.
I've managed to successfully root my Note with Magisk.
Somehow I noticed that my device loses root after a reboot and sometimes even randomly. When I go into the custom recovery and flash Magisk 14 or 14.3 everything works fine for while, till it loses root again.
Could someone shed some light on my issue, please?
Thanks in advance.
I've also themed Magisk Manager with Substratum could that be the issue?

I'm also running stock rom, losing magisk root from time to time.
When root is lost, I'm getting a notification that "new magisk V14 is available.
Reinstalling with TWRP only to lose it again a day or two later.

You all need to change your settings in magisk manager. I had the same problem. Change your update channel to Beta. This will keep magisk 14.3 installed once you flash it in recovery after setting this. :highfive:

Are you using the hide root feature?
If so then that is probably your issue.

Try disabling MagiskHide and re-enable it again (try also with a reboot between disabling and enabling)

If I disable it, won't secure apps that run in the background pick up root? I'm guessing I should freeze them first or something?

Try closing those apps first, I think it goes ok as long you don't start the apps yourself because most off the apps checks root at startup, but I can't guarantee you anything

Something weird has happened... I've not actually changed anything but now I tend to lose root immediately after rebooting.
I'm a technical person so whilst I say nothing has changed, I know that it probably has and I just can't remember.
I need Hide, so disabling that is not an option... I have no idea where to even start debugging this

I've been posting my analysis here:

We have some smart guys (ie @topjohnwu @Didgeridoohan @kantjer etc) and I don't know enough to sort this so the least I can do is provide as much information as possible

Only been spamming the thread with my woes since yesterday so still early days. I'm certainly not expecting an immediate fix because this has been going on for quite some time and if it was easy, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Thanks. In my point of view this look to be a bug in Magisk. Did you tried some older version?

It works, I currently use it for root, ViPER, and Xposed.
I actually went ahead and installed it before you replied, and I've been looking for something like it for ages. It's really well done.
Thanks for the heads up. I just converted from SuperSU to Magisk with phh SuperUser with no problems. Works great.

The first part, you mean just unroot part?
Sent from my R1 HD using Tapatalk
Yes, installed so I could keep adblock and still play Pokemon Go with my kids. Used SuperSU full unroot and then followed the guides here on XDA for how to install it - works great
Installed following the android police tutorial. Root and xposed working. However, when I switch "Root Toggle" in Magisk Manager to the off position, it switches itself back to the on position. Anyone else getting this?
Edit:
This works, per u/Howie_The_Lord on reddit:

It seems that this happens, when you ROM is preeroted, you need to delete the system/xbin/su with TWRP and let Magisk mount its own there.

Issue with magisk after using triangle away!

So i flashed magisk on my phone 2 weeks ago and everything seemed fine and awesome but then for some reason i decided to use triangle away to reset my flash counter. After doing that i couldn't pass the safetynet test. I tried uninstalling magisk, flashing stock boot and finally flashed magisk zip file but still couldnt pass the safetynet test.
Extra info: i have a Samsung Note 4 N910H 6.0 marshmallow.
Read that disabling usb debugging mode might help but no luck.
Applied other fixes as well
Any help will be appreciated

When asking for help it's a good idea to include some kind of log. Upload a Magisk log (as an attachment). Maybe it'll show something (but don't hold your breath).

Install from Google Play the app called "RootBeer Sample", hide it from Magisk Hide, run it and upload a screenshot and upload the Magisk log.
AFAIK Note 4 doesn't have the original flash counter; it uses Knox and you can't revert that. The last device with a flash counter was S3/mini.

Xposed

Good day all
Will xposed work on Note 8 (N950FD)?

I would guess that an installer for an S8+ might work since it is basically the same device. Since rooting with TWRP and SuperSU I've flashed a few things meant for S8 devices and they either work properly as is or with very minor script tweaking.

Which root do you have—SuperSU or Magisk? I have Magisk, so tried with 26-07-17-xposed-systemless-v87-sdk25-by-PurifyOS.zip but that throws me into a bootloop directly?
How did you proceed chronologically?
First the Xposed apk (which one?), then flash the Purify zip? Did you wipe anything before or after, data or cache? I've read many conflicting reports, since you've done it should be possible to replicate it…

Hey guys,
Trying to install the systemless XPosed for Nougat on my Note 8, but for some reason, after installation, it stops my 256GB Exynos Note 8 from booting up. Was able to recover it by running the Magisk uninstaller via TWRP.
Noticed that on the official XPosed thread, it states that it'll 'cause boot loop issues on stock Samsung ROM, but on the Systemless XPosed Page, it claims the SDK 24 and 25 are universal, so, what's wrong?
Any suggestions on getting systemless XPosed working on my Exynos Note 8 with Nougat? I especially want the systemless variant as it allows easy on/off whenever I'm going shopping and want to use Android Pay instead of having to uninstall all modules.

Safety check was successful but ctsProfile: false and basicIntegrity: false

Also modules that I install are not appearing on the modules tap it's almost af if my Magisk stopped working. All I did was uninstall emojione and try to install a ios emoji app and this happened.
Yes, the SafetyNet check was successful (a reply from the server was received) and the check determined that your device does not pass SafetyNet.
Try completely uninstalling and reinstalling Magisk and the Manager.

That depends... You can't pass SafetyNet fully, but with the No Device Check module you can make it pass the CTS profile check. So if you have any apps that only rely on that, you might be good to go.
Of course, having Xposed installed may cause other issues, but that's another story.

[Discussion] Bypass root detection Fidor banking app

Hi, my original plan was keeping my OP7 root-free because I need that banking app - which has an incredibly good root detection.
Long story short, a few days later and went back to my old habits... Magisk, Kernel, you name it. And the banking app stopped working again.
I do pass the safetynet test, have repackaged Magisk Manager. Google Pay is working like a charme. But Fidor bank seems to be better than Google, at least in this regard. I tried logging traffic using adguard, the app does not connect to anything, no dns requests as well.
Most of the times the app won't start at all, sometimes the first screen flashes for a very short period, and sometimes chrome opens with a webpage from the bank telling me my device is modified. How the **** do they know?
Maybe you guys may have a hint in what direction I could continue poking, because carrying a second phone just for banking is a little bit overkill...

I did. And rebooted. And reinstalled. And combinations of those.
A short screenrecord of what is happening as soon as I try to open the app can be found here (youtube link)
I have the exact same Problem
Everything works: Netflix, other banking apps, etc.. Just Fidor. I do not really know how their detection works, but I assume it's not just a root detection.
The weird thing is, it worked flawlessly 2 years ago Now it's just annoying..
Waited a few versions oft Magisk now, however nothing changes.
You're not alone

Same problem here ... since the new fidor version v3.14 is out, no way to getting it to work. Downgrade to 3.12 is futile, it forces the update to 3.14 immediately.
As an amendment to my post above (where you'll find pretty much all you need to hide from almost any app), I've successfully tested and hidden root from Fidor v3.14.0.1.

Thank you, the issue seems to have been addressed there. But as far as I can see, the canary version does not have the optional modules, correct? So I think, unfortunately I will have to wait for an adapted release of the regular magisk.

I have no idea what that means... Magisk modules works just fine on the Canary releases.

Thanks for sharing!
I have successfully installed the canary Magisk, have Magisk hide enabled, safetynet pass etc.
All bank apps work after adding them to the hide list, for example trying "Kontist" w/o hide gave error, with hide it works.
However, Fidor (3.14.0.1) is still not working for me :/
The app stays open for 1-2 seconds on the canary build, quite a bit longer than on stable version (instant close), clean cache + clean app data, still no luck.
So Fidor must use another detection method that the other bank apps don't have.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Similar Problem, my bank brought out a new app, that is detecting the root/custom rom somehow. The app closes and shows me security bull**** about root, jailbreak, custom roms. I don't know how everything should be hidden, SafetyNet checks out but this app can detect it. No idea how.

Thanks, I was already going through that one.
Turns out the Banking app was detecting the Original Magisk Package.
Hiding Magisk Manager itself fixed my problem. Thanks for the link.

Still did not get Fidor to work. Crashes after the initial first 2-3 seconds. If I uninstall Magisk it works again. Disabling modules, delete files from sd-card, etc. didn't change a thing.
This also seem not to be the problem, since it works after uninstalling Magisk.
Fidor is hidden from Magisk, Magisk is repacked with other name.
Mind giving specific instructions on what you did to make Fidor work on your device?

It's all right there in the link provided. I'm not doing anything that's not described there... Of course, there's a whole lot of things there that I didn't do.
Here's my setup:
Android Pie.
Magisk v19.4 (19307), with hidden Manager.
The app on the Hide list.
My internal storage is full of Magisk files and I never bother to disable any modules (all of the ones I have installed can be hidden without issue). I also have OEM Unlocking disabled, but that's just by chance and not something I've done because of an app detecting it...

So basically same setup. Still doesn't work with latest Fidor Release.

When you say "basically", what's the difference?

That's the question. Even if I do a complete fresh install without anything else beside Magisk and Fidor: as soon as Magisk is running (hidden manager & Fidor, SafetyNet Pass and certified in PlayStore), Fidor stops working.
