Spent Oreo issue? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I have a sim free UK Note 8. Since the much anticipated Oreo update I seem to be having little glitches/delays with some actions but my main issue is with the SPen.
When I take it put I get my normal star wars light sabre sound, the screen pops up as normal but the pen doesn't register on the screen? Fingers do but not the pen. If I reinsert it the screen goes away again as normal.
Any thoughts?

Try with another S pen, if it works fine, then the s pen is faulty, otherwise, the ptoblem is within the device itself

Are you rooted, running any mods, etc.? A factory reset might help too.

No root no mods just normal phone. I changed the tip of the pen this morning and it's working but I'm not convinced that would sort it. Maybe it's intermittent. Thanks for comments so far, I'll report back. Does a factory reset lose everything - so backup with samsung & google?

Ok cool. Yes a factory reset would wipe data so make sure you backup before going that route. Although if the pen works now that suggests it's hardware rather than software (i.e. no need for a reset). Maybe the tip was just loose or something.

How do you customize the sounds? I Don't see an option for that.

I can't remember exactly but it involved downloading an app called note buddy. If you Google it you'll find it. Sorry I couldn't be more help. It's worth the hunt though and it must be easy if I did it!!

Wierd Stuff

K have a AT&T Note 3 MJ5 baseband version. Well one day while sending out a text, the menu kept popping up. I closed the message app out and still the menu for the home screen continued to pop up. I checked the accessibility setting and everything looked fine. But every app i open the menu or the haptic feedback continues checked or not checked. So i rooted and installed safstrap and install several different roms but still the same thing. Its really bad when the keyboard is pulled up to send a text or write an email and also when its on the charger fully charged the device works great, but once its unplugged and a little bit of the battery is use this thing goes nuts. Stuff just popping on its own. Anyway thanks in advance for any input. Thanks million.
It sounds like your capacitive menu button is constantly being pressed. Has the screen been replaced by any chance? I'd revert it back to stock and have it exchanged for a new one.
Thanks 440bro for replying, to answer question is no, as far as i can tell it has never been wet nor dropped to the effect that it would cause all this wacky stuff. Most of the time when i have the keyboard up for texting n emailing, the menu pops up n down or ill have to hit the return key. But as long as i have it plugged in charging or the battery is 100% it is useful. I'll make a short video and post it some time today i hope, Thanks 440 for the input

I asked if your screen was replaced because the menu button is a very thin ribbon cable attached to the screen. Someone who's not careful could cut, or damage this part when replacing the glass. If it was pinched it could act like it's constantly being pushed. Maybe your phone was assembled on a monday morning by someone who was hung over and damaged it lol!
Even if you aren't the original owner I would walk up to an att store and ask for a replacement since it's still a new device.

Do you have a protector that over laps the top edge of the display? It is possible the lip on the protector is actually extending into the contact area of that button and causing it to think it is being pressed. If you have a protector or bumper of some sort, remove it and see if you still have the problem.

Glad to hear they swapped you. Thanks for reporting back!
I swapped a Note 2 that I'd upgraded from. For some reason it kept getting the black screen of death (basically locking up). I reverted it back to stock and removed root. Had NO issues even though it was upgraded to 4.3 before I rooted it. No Knox trip or Custom status.
And thats a weird and to spell wierd?
After working in a sprint repair center for many years I saw this issue with the Galaxy S2 line constantly. An lcd replacement fixed it up.

I was getting it constantly too but it turns out this is warning you that your back cover is not sealed all the way. You need to put the back cover properly by starting by pressing from the center out (near the camera is the first snap that needs to be pressed in) and continue to press down outwards like the arrows show on the plastic cover that was on the back when you received the phone.
I get this on every reboot and I have pressed the back cover onto the phone as good as possible.
Is my phone broken somehow or is that normal behaviour?
It appears for a few seconds after unlocking until touchwiz seems to redraw.
I don't get it constantly but only on reboot. I'd like my phone to be watersealed.

It's normal, no worries. You should also get a warning about the usb port cover whenever you unplug a charger. These are just normal behaviors for the phone, reminding people to double check and make sure everything is sealed up properly.

+1.
Spot on - This is a generic message and does not mean your back is not secure, I see no sensor that the device could use to determine that the back or usb cover is not fully sealed. No way there is a switch at every tab for the back.
As for the USB cover I also get that after unplugging the USB and every reboot. Regardless of actual cover position.
After numerous times of seeing the warnings, I'm pretty sure I could keep it sealed without being notified…
A way to remove these annoying warnings would make using this phone a whole lot more pleasant..

Looking under the PopupuiReceiver.apk (Under the manifest), there is mention of "BATTERY_COVER_WATERPROOF_POPUP" as an action. It is pluable that there is an inclusion for the USB and that by decomiling and removing the strings, the annoying pop ups will be removed.

Help with touch related problem

Hi guys,
My Xperia ZR started behaving abnormally some days back, I put "screentouchtest" app and found that there were random inputs on the phone which made the phone go useless... Check the screen shot attached.
So I tried to make an app that will disable only that part on my screen and I was successful at it... Check screenshot attached. I could then at least use my phone to some extent.
But now the frequency of these random touch inputs have increased and that has made it again go unusable...
Problem is that I made this app as a floating app and whenever user touches other part of the phone , touch below the unblocked area is activated.
SO now I wanted to disable the touch completely over this area...any help will be appreciated.
Sony says it is due to water logging in the motherboard and no warranty will be given.
You are not alone!
Having the same problem here. Random touch inputs on the top right corner of device. I can assure you it's not because of water log of any sorts because i have opened ,checked, dried and even tested the touch display. Its a software related issue I guess which I am not able to pinpoint or understand. I wish someone from the forum helps with it.
water logging? did your phone get wet some time? its waterproof phone and no warranty given? screw sony in consumer court

Sorry to say unfortunately custom ROM doesn't help either. After I installed one just to see if the problem persists, To my surprise it didn't! But after a week or so the pendulum was back to square one. So I had to roll back. I really don't know how to go about this problem I think the problem is because of a bug of some sorts which causes the chip to send signals to the display addressing that its being touched or whatever. Anyway this is just my guess. You can try installing a custom ROM for your device and see if the issue ceases. In that case my problem would be just device specific. Do share your results after you install a custom ROM :good:.

May be there is a problem with the touch digitizer under the LCD panel which is misbehaving. No software can fix it. You will need to replace the touch digitizer along with LCD screen as they are sold as single unit. Check online if you can find the parts and ask any local mobile repairer to replace it. :good:
NO Luck with Custom ROM
I put Android Lollipop (CM12 Port) and there have been no change. Looks like the problem is with digitizer, last time I told local repair shop to replace the screen they said they cant separate the screen and had no clue. But I searched and found out from youtube videos that it can be done. Now all I have to do is buy Screen+Digitizer.
As you can see the random touch strip have moved little upwards from my earlier screenshots. That happened months back. If anyone wants the app I made then let me know. It helps me to some extent.

Where can I buy 1? Online? Link Please...
Since there are random touches on my phone, I made app that blocks this touch... Check the screenshots, I have "Show Touches" Option ON from Developer Settings. This makes all the touches show white marker... So I made app that floats over the screen and wont show any response when there are touches over that area. "Semi Transparent Area" in the screenshot - Touch wont work over that part. App wont completely disable the touch though, if we press other part of screen for that time app gets disabled...

I have this problem too but it only happens if the phone screen get wet
Some time it happen randomly but when i press on the screen at bottom and on led gently it disappear and back to normal
Thank you!
The Float APK solved the major issue of my faulty touch screen in my Nexus 4. There are two lines in my screen where the touch is not working anymore. One of them is having several crazy clicks making my phone somehow useless. By using this app, I can prevent that, which is great!
Two issues I've got:
- the textbox to set the distance from the top is located exactly in the first dead line! So I need to turn my phone sideways to be edit to click there and edit its value.
- when using the phone in horizontal mode, blocked zone turns as well, but the faulty zone is fixed there.
I'm wondering if you might share with us the source code or maybe you consider to make some improvements on it?
Thank you so much for sharing this app here!
thanks for this app solution.
I too have problem of ghost touches. This app definately helps with that and makes the phone somewhat usable again.
The only problem is that some ghost touches are continous (it's like someone presses their finger on the screen and keeps holding it there). This makes action by other touches unresponsive.
Maybe we can find a solution for this in the float app?
Source code for the app
Finally since many of you requested, here is the source code! - Stop Touch - Source Code

S Pen not working

After I accidentally inserted the S Pen backwards, but later on managed to remove it successfully, the S Pen is not working.
It can still be detected, ie triggering Air Command or screen off memo, when I was removing it whilst it was stuck, but after it was removed it does not trigger the Air Command, and the worst part is it does not interact with the phone in anyway, not even as a stylus. :crying:
I only got it for a few days, and really hope you guys can help me solve this issue. If not I will send it for repairs and hopefully get it fixed for free or low cost.
Hi,
I have a similar problem after accitaly insert in wrong way.
The S pen work, but there is no detection anymore.
I had to remove every detection in settings, but I still have some notification about S pen removed.
(you can trigfer air commands by double click S pen bouton)
I would like to know if someone did repaire the sensor?
There is a switch inside the phone which you have broken by yanking out the pen after it was inserted the wrong way. There are videos on YouTube that explain it in detail.
Yes.
I would like to know if someone did repaire this switch, in a Samsung repair station?

You can actually use the spen by going into settings, spen, and than turn off S pen power saver mode
My spen first began to get less and less responsive, i.e. I had to push hard for it to interact with the screen, and now it completely stopped interacting with the screen.

and for those who dont have 'Swipe up on home button active?
i never used that option and still have this random unresponsiveness of the screen. Tried it for half an hour in safe mode and it was fine. But then again, i uninstalled an app and it was fine for a day or so and then it started again.

Hi,
no, i do not have apps from other sources. all are downloaded from the play store. I did consider this but dont like it. I'll prepare myself mentally for a hard reset i hate this part because of the backup and data loss and evrything.
Thanks.
i am experiencing the same issue since a couple of months.
i now tried to disable the swipe up on home button gesture, though i really enjoyed this feature. will report back if the issue is gone...
EDIT: issue is still persistent.... any other ideas?
It seems it is a hardware issue, so i don't think it is possible to fix it. Just turn on and off the screen.

i guess so too. any chance for waranty? has anyone replaced their screen?
For me this issue is occuring at least once an hour so turning off and on the screen is no sufficient solution...
Any news on the hard reset being a fix?

i think pressing once and hour 2 times the power button is not so bad... Anyway i understand is not nice at all. I think they will not pay attention at this for you, they don't care much and probably are going to factory restart it and give it to you like it was before. Anyway you don't lose anything trying...

As it is a hardware problem doing a factory reset would not fix anything...

Hmm, I did turn the "Tap to wake screen" on and this seems to have solved it for me. No need to factory reset. :highfive:
I didnt have the nerves to debug this issue and got myself a pixel 3a-XL. There was a promotion and i got it for the price i bought my n7+ back then.
what i will do now is a complete factory reset and see if it solves the issue with the screen. If not, i will mention this as well, besides the damaged charging port, to the warranty service.
I will report back once done. Could be next month tho.
Cheers
I got this problem too, after the october update. Some people at not a forum they have it even since august security patch.
Hmd is a joke same as this phone. This phone should have been rock stable, but is not. There are software and hardware issues that its hard for me to recommend this phone to anyone. Or any nokia phone with android.
