FM Radio for Europeean (Exynos) S10 - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I've read on a russian website that all unlocked S10 in USA & Canada (Snapdragon) will have FM Radio (via NextRadio App I suppose). Hope this is true.
Any clue for European versions with Exynos chip ?

I bought unlocked 10e north am snapdragon. It didn't come with fm radio apps. I had no idea. Plugged in headphones and downloaded nextradio. It has very good fm radio or at least the sound and reception is very good.

I tried it on mine with Exynos and NextRadio app:
"NextRadio won't work on your device"
As far as I know no Exynos device had FM functionality in the last years.

It's a good news for our snapdragon model.
Very useful to have radio fm without the need to use data

how good is the reception?

It's as good as a small radio on mine. I sometimes use an old cutoff earbud for an antenna so I can play thru the speaker and I get great reception. The antenna I made isn't a foot long.

i have a China Mobile S10e SM-G9708 (Snapdragon) and it comes with FM radio and Samsung app preinstalled.

Feel so bad to see the Exynos variation has less functionality, performance, and battery life.......

Yeah stupid Samsung... At least we can be happy we will have root and custom ROMs etc.

I've been looking into this issue today and found lots of evidence that virtually all smartphones have the FM chip built in but mobile networks disable them for financial reasons. Mobile networks put pressure on manufacturers to disable the chip so that we are forced to use mobile data to stream music. I remember back when the S7 came out, it didn't have support for FM radio out of the box but it received an update which enabled the chip later.

Hi, would you please share the FM Radio apk. It's a feature I like but don't have available

This isn't the case with exynos phones. They never had radio chip (unlike snapdragon variants) so there is nothing to enable. Spirit FM radio on very old devices (around android 5.0) was somehow able to use the bluetooth as FM radio receiver on some devices, but the reception was poor and it was killing battery life. That's not possible anymore.
I love having fm radio on my phone so I have been constantly searching for solution since galaxy s8 and there is none (for the exynos model). Snapdragon version of the s10 has also better battery life and performance, so if you really want fm radio + benefits and don't care for root (the only advantage of exynos models for now) u should try to find one.

I bought S10e from finland last week and had to send it back because the FM-radio just didn't start functioning. No radio app, downloaded and installed nextradio apk but it said there is no suitable software on phone to start fm tuner. So it is totally turned off from factory I guess. Anybody have success to get FM tuner receiving on European version?

The Exynos devices don't have a FM tuner built in. Only way to listen to radio is over the internet.

I mean this sucks. Why doesn't Sammy install one in their chips? It's not super expensive technology. I don't think that a valid argument is for carrier monetary reasons since mid-tier and low-tier Samsung phones have the tuner built in

You're right...there's no real reason for this but to save just a tiny amount of money. Samsung does this for a couple of years and never mentioned why with a good reason.
Also integrating DAB wouldn't be hard work but a really nice feature, especially in Europe.

What programs out there work besides next radio?

A lot of companies do that, Motorola is famous for it. I once asked a Motorola engineer why they didn't put NFC on their US phones and he told me that no one in the US uses NFC anyway. This was only a few years ago too. No one knows why companies make those idiotic decisions but I guess they figure that millions of pennies add up.

Wolfson DAC in international version?
Well, without starting other topic, I got one more, fast question...
People say that i9305 US version doesn't have Wolfson DAC. But how's about SGS3 LTE international version, does it have Wolfson DAC? Anyone who has international version could confirm that?
I read some topics but noone really specified which version they had.

Samsung Galaxy S 5 unlocked but region locked and triple sim adapter is blocked

Just a word of warning for potential buyers that the region locking on the Samsung galaxy S5 is different to that on my Note 3. My note 3 is unlocked and can use different sims and software update without issues.
But had a Samsung Galaxy S5 for more than a week, got it before UK official launch as it was a Korean model 32GB LTE snapdragon version, it was unlocked and was able to use several different sims from various UK networks but couldnt software update as phone would keep asking for SKT (south korea telecom) sim for software update even though would work with other UK sims for calls data and text for more than a week of me using phone. worked fine for streaming thousands of songs via google music and deezer and calls and texts but no luck with software update. see alert shown by phone on attempting to do software update https://plus.google.com/108877366358490804054/posts/X38mPrxYHmf
wireless charging worked fine though with Qi insert as shown on my youtueb uploads for the S5 which can be seen from my tagline below
Just a heads up to people wanting to import a Samsung galaxy S5 from abroad that their region locking is getting worse with every new phone.
Dont have the S5 anymore and wont be buying a samsung phone again..... due to region locking blocking features... like fingerprint scanner use in ebay app in the UK even though unlocked phone and also samsung has blocked use of triple sim adapters as it has blocked the loading of sim app need for triple sim adapters to work. The same adapters work fine on my s4 and note 3. The adapter was inserted correctly as my main sim works through the adapter but cant access the extra sims as samsung has blocked the sim app from launching on the S5 but works fine on S4 and note 3 and other phones.
Not sure about internationally, however North America region lock seems to be disabled if you first activate with the carrier that the phone was built for and then unlock. If you just buy a phone from a carrier that has it region locked and you never activate it with them, you will have issues.

Region lock on the 900A
I am looking to buy the galaxy s5 for use in several Sub-saharan African countries. I already have an old ATT sim with me and I will probably be ordering the 900A in/from the US and i want to make sure that the region-lock is not an issue. Will i be able to region unlock with an ATT sim card while in Africa or do i need to have someone make the 5min call for me while the phone is in the US? and is this call meant to be to or from the s5?
Thanks!
No one likes self serving restrictions by manufacturers or carriers. But Samsung is far from the only manufacturer doing things like this. And region locking is one of the easiest obstacles to overcome.
On single SIM phones at least removing the subsidy lock nullifies the region lock as well. In any event if you couldn't make a few calls in the area that the phone originated, you could simply have edited the region lock blacklist to circumvent the region lock.

I had the S5 but no longer have it. Bought the one plus one which is half the price but 64gb and miles better with no region locking crap and call recording apps work on it unlike on my several samsung phones. Call recording apps did work earlier on samsung phones and after software upgrades by samsung they no longer work on them. But they work on other android phones. So samsung is deliberately gimping android with their "updates". Sane way triple sim adapters don't work on the S5 but they do on my s4 and note 3 and other phones.
Coming to your reference to dvd and bluray. .. i don't but them anymore as have several paid digital subscription packages and don't buy dvd and bluray anymore as realised i haven't bothered to open the packs of several of my earlier purchases.
Several other android manufacturers don't region lock or block call recording apps or triple sim adapters so there are better and cheaper options.

region locking isnt an opinion. its an actual thing
heres my point
you want to buy a phone, you want it to have multi sim adapters support, no region locking and ability to record in calls.
you do your research like you do "all your purchases"
then you buy a device knowing these things wont work. then you ***** about samsung doing it anyway?
Dude pull that bee out of your bonnet. Dint you have anything better to do than dig up a few months old thread of mine!
Triple sim adapters work on the S4 and note 3.
Call recording apps do work on android phones and even older samsung phones and other new android phones and don't work on new or software updated older samsung phones.
Yes i know what region locking is.
I now choose to spend my money on other companies android products which i think are better. If that bothers you then that is not my problem. I have better things to do today than argue on the Internet with someone i don't know.
Good night.

My issue isnt with you buying anything. my issue is with you being such a vocal detester of certain features or lack thereof, when you bought them knowing full well they had these things wrong with them because you did the proper research.
why would you even buy a phone that you know wont work the way you want, better yet why moan about samsung doing this. even though you knew they did it before you bought it

One last time. .. my trile sim adapters did work then on my note 3 and S4 but they didn't on the s5. That was my experience as I hadn't come across posts regarding that it didn't work on the S5. The adapter actually 'works' on the s5 too in the sense that the sim number 1 works via the connector but the other sims can't be used as samsung blocks the launch of the sim app but it doesn't get blocked on older samsung phones. Ps. they work on iPhones and other android phones.
Getting to call recording apps. . They did work on s4 and note 3 and stopped working on note 3 after software updates. Sometimes software have glitches so I gave them the benefit of the doubt but since on the newer s5 it didn't work either and works on other new android phones like my one plus one it is my understanding that samsung is blocking some features which you can gather if you read up more on the topic.
As explained AGAIN above and
in my personal experience the triple sim adapters worked in s4 and note 3 (but not after software update indicating it is samsung doing the blocking) and didn't work on the s5.
Call recording still works on loads of android phones including my one plus one. It used to work on my older samsung phones till later software updates and didn't Work on the S5.
If you need more of my reasons why I think the are better ones out there than the S5....
water proofing is **** as shown in my videos. Sony is better.
Internal memory is loads better on cheaper phones like the one plus one.
Camera is worse than much cheaper one plus one.
Speaker is much louder on the one plus one.
Battery life "without cutting back any features" is better on the one plus one. But would be better on s5 using that black and white ultra power saving mode which stops many features working.
Edit. I still have my note 3 and note 1 and s4 but I do like my gadgets and have other 6 android phones, 5 android tablets and 2 android mini pc's and ipad air. So after owning the and using many other android devices which I no longer have my personal impression of the S5 is that there are better ones out there.
If the above bothers you then not much I can do but say agree to disagree. Cheers.

Ignore some of the apologists for Samsung on this thread trying to pester people who purchase their own android devices unlike the usual reviewers on many websites who get their free review phones and do your own research before spending your money.
Word of warning even when buying an unlocked or no region lock samsung phone in a country with no region lock, it can subsequently get region lock if you do any software updates while traveling or moving to another country with region lock as shown long time ago in the Note 3 thread (thread with hundreds of posts) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47664261&postcount=1380 As you can see paying customers who bought unlocked (no region lock phones) samsung phone later got region lock with software update while travelling and working in the Eu and their phone would no longer work with their home country sim. Please note phone was bought from official samsung store and not so called grey market what ever that term grey market may mean! So any person who travels and works across countries or even travelling abroad and wants to use roaming or local sims would be at risk of region lock unless they never want to update their phone or need to resort to hacking the software which most wont be able to do.

Is Radio Accessible/Included on on Snapdragon Chinese Variants?

I saw this phone listing on ebay: Samsung-Galaxy-Note-9-Dual-SIM-SM-N9600-Factory-Unlocked-Snapdragon-845-128GB
While the description includes the following under the comms sections:
Radio No
I was wondering if anyone owns this model and has been able to enable it, can confirm that the chip doesn't have it, that the phone doesn't come with drivers (but are available elsewhere) or if it is just a matter of installing Next Radio.
This is a Hong Kong/international variant.
I have radio on mine and seems to work it opens though I've never tried to actually use it.
If you have the digital radio app installed on your device then yes. You should be able to receive digital radio signals when you plug in your headset.

The problem is that there are different variants of this phone and each variant, depending on region where it is primarily sold is slightly different. Consequently, I am wondering if (and which) of the Hong Kong and Chinese variants with Snapdragon processors and Snapdragon chips feature the radio function, but just hide or don't include drivers for this functionality.
Yes I have 9600 that came with hk firmware.

Both the HK and Mainland China variants use the same hardware. The only difference is that the Mainland China variant doesn't come with Google Play Services preinstalled on it. You have to install it yourself.

I pulled the trigger on the Prism Green S10+ (G975F/DS) from them on Thursday. Looks like it is shipping out on Monday (I thought it might be last Friday) since they claimed it was in stock. I've bought a few phones from them before and they've always delivered so am hoping that they come through!
Reading on down that Ebay listing I see one thing in the specs that has me wondering.
"OS Android 9.0 (Pie); One UI
ChipsetExynos 9820 Octa (8 nm) - EMEA
Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) - USA/LATAM, China"
That doesn't mean that they will ship a Snapdragon model to the US does it bacause it sure reads that way unless that's just a copy/paste of Samsung's specs.
You're reading too much into it. It's just a copy paste.

Sorry for the bit off topic question but why would you even want the Exynos version? AFAIK the 855 beats the 9820 benchmark wise. The only reason I see to get the Exynos version is its 8K video recording potential (if we can hack it to work).

That's not really true from what I have seen, the Exynos beats out the Snapdragon in both single core & multicore, correct me if I'm wrong......

Its the dual-sim version and only Exynos have dual SIM versions

If Samsung's history with the past several S models remains the same, the Exynos version will have a fully unlocked bootloader, while the USA 855 models will be fully locked down.

You have a point there, but there is a possibility of network incompatibilities with US carriers. I heard that some T-Mobile bands are unsupported.

I can't speak to the S10 models, but I have both a T-Mobile (Qualcomm) and international (Exyonos) S7. I've never seen a difference in connectivity or download speeds between the two of them. I'm guessing the situation will be similar with the S10, but only time will tell. The reality for me is that the current speed and quality of connection I get is terrific, and I'd assume that either S10 version will at least equal and probably better what I'm getting now. Our needs all vary, of course, but I'll sacrifice some download speed (if that even ends up being the case) for an unlocked bootloader every time.

Samsung galaxy s10 has dual gps, someone tested gps accuracy?

Possible from samsung galaxy s10 exynos
also has dual gps.
GPS with aGPS, GLONASS, BeiDou,QZSS,Galileo, Dual-frequency GNSS

Anybody see the Snapdragon GPS specs yet? Hopefully dual-frequency with BCM47755 (or something else in that family that supports dual freqs...not sure if it was ever positively determines if all the chips in the family support dual frequency or not)...
AND, if so, hopefully it's enabled in the code!!!!
The Exynos GPS chip for the S10 has been discovered.... the same Broadcom BCM47752 that was in the S9. There is still no definitive info (that I know of, anyway) that tells whether the 47752 received dual band L1/L5 signals like the 47755. The Broadcom spec is ambiguous- the 4775x family paper talks about the 47755 and the 47758 having L1/L2, but has no such blurbs about the 47752/47754. In fact, it has no blurbs on them at all. Attempts to enable lane-level L1/L5 accuracy in the S9 have also not been successful as far as I am aware.
Of course this is NOT the Snapdragon spec I'm seeking- hopefully that will come in the next few days as US customers started to received their pre-orders.
Snapdragon Galaxy S10
I have received my Snapdragon Galaxy S10 and have installed GPS Test on it and only see L1 frequencies being used

Version with snapdragon 855 in hong kong
it shows l5 or has dual gps.
In turn, huawei mate 20 / mate 20 pro
also has dual gps.
Only in applications you can not see l5.
And what's strange in gps 20 tests
represents great as the best
smartphone gps.
It shows the signal where other smartphones are
have a problem.
As if. not fully. he had a dual gps.
But it detects. faster. satellite. than other phones.
By comparison to professional devices, this is a top scorer.
It follows from mate 20 in some way
uses dual gps despite the applications
they do not show l5.
US?
Are you in the US and what carrier? BTW do you see Galileo satellites?

Anybody else could understand which version of s10 can receive dual frequency GPS?
Thx
In what appears to be a reversal of expectations, the SnapDragon S10 (at least the Hong Kong Version- I would expect the U.S. and other SnapDragon devices to be the same) IS receiving L1 and L5 signals!! Nobody has tested accuracy in any app yet (as far as I know) to see if we are at the promised 30cm granularity. The Exynos version hasn't show L5 yet, based on the sample size of 1.
The author of the GPSTEST app has a great write up on all of this and keeps it updated as users supply their testing results. I highly recommend you check it out (and run GPSTEST and send him the results if you have an S10!)

Thanks, I don't have s10, yet. I'm waiting and searching to choose which version to buy, and double frq gnss is one of the most important spec I'm looking for...

you want to pay 1000$ for model S10, just to see on the screen with GPSTest app the font charters of L1 or L5? Something else maybe ?
No, I want to pay for dual freq GPS implemented in the apps that give ~30cm accuracy.

now we can talk ...
into the smartphone market, there are for now, 3 chips to support dual band GNSS.
- Broadcom 47755
- Kirin 980
- Snapdragon 855
all we have proofs, using app like GPSTest for dual band support, but ... no measurements for cm accuracy from customers - users
USA Navstar (GPS) satellites with L5 freq. is under development until 2022. Only the L2 freq. is working a lot of years ago. So, if anyone want "cm accuracy" , can not rely on devices with L5 singals for now. Into the new future I believe everything will OK.
something else. Do you have hear about "Galileo 1 meter accuracy" ??? Is there any evidence about that also?
My opinion is "don't buy products before there are real measurements" from review sites or youtube channels. Unless, you have the spare money to do this job for the rest of us.

Yes, currently the China versions of the S10 are the only ones proven to have dual GPS reception. I reckon it's just a firmware/software thing and hopefully Sammy will roll this out to the S10 units in the rest of the world.

I think the dual gps is an snapdragon 855 feature, so enyxos user will be out of luck tho.
I think that the snapdragon 855 has only dual gps.
In the softy, the Chinese market is now
I think you just need to root your s10
and copy the gps xml file from the Chinese market soft.
This option is only for s10 with snapdragon 855,
Exynos is not really dual gps,
just like it was from s9.

China/HK uses the SnapDragon 855. The Exynos models has an external GNSS chip- Broadcom 47752. It is still undetermined if that chip does dual frequency, although others in the 4775x family do.

I won't be the first to try it , but if other root an S10 and can get dual freq GNSS to work (and find that apps actually achieve the 30cm resolution) then I'll give it a try!
