I noticed that on my S10e, auto brightness doesnt work as well as it did on my Note 9.
Sometimes I have to manually turn down my brightness if I turn off the lights in my bedroom for example. Or if i turn on the lights, brightness stays on the same level. But if i turn off my phone display then turn it back on, the brightness is suddenly changed.
How well does it work for you guys?

I have noticed that my S10e is slow to respond to ambient lighting
I have an S10 and to be honest it's hard to say if auto brightness is working how it should. Coming from an LG V30 this phone's display is significantly brighter and especially more apparent when using it in the dark. Even the darkest setting is too bright. I always check the level to make sure auto brightness is working as it should and I guess it is? Either that or it's stuck.
my only comment is that in totally dark room it does not go all the way down , it stays a little bit brighter than normal and than my old iphone x

yeah same here, and the strange thing is that on my Samsung Note 9 & Samsung S7 it actually used to go all the way down in a totally dark room, but on this phone it doesnt for some reason..
It can take a bit for Adaptive brightness to learn what your favorite settings are like.
Yes, same here, I have s10 and in the dark auto brightness is near to half. Wtf?! I tried to calibrate, no chance. For sure this is a bug. If you go in *#0*# you will see it s writing uncalibrate light sensor

nah, on my Note 9 & S7 it worked as it should on the first day i got those phones
there clearly is a problem with adaptive brightness on the S10, anyone with the S10 who had another samsung phone previously will notice that
no, the auto brightness is trash. it sucks. it never gets bright enough even tho i've made adjustments literally daily. it sucks.

First reason: I want some T-Mobile features what unlocked doesn't provide natively and may require an extra app to function, but if before return window closes, I would be able to find a 100% firmware that would work, then I may not return the device.
Second reason: I don't like the fingerprint on S10e and maybe it is somehow better than S10's implementation, I still have to be more precise than Pixel 2 and other which had the sensor on the back.

Interesting. I came from OnePlus 6t, the in displayed scanner suck kiwi balls. Everytime you switch screen protector you needed to rescan your finger. Lol.

Oh, that is not convenient at all. I think the manufacturers are pushing their limits to please customers with new designs/features which in reality hurt the quality of the devices we pay for
I have the S10 plus and the auto brightness seems to be functioning fine. Occasionally in the dark I get thrown off with how bright this screen is. The brightness setting does decrease significantly in the dark but when viewing something with a mostly white background, I have to squint until my pupils constrict to a point where my retinas aren't getting torched. In brighter environments, the brightness level seems to increase accordingly.

We have already covered the issues with the proximity sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S10. Now, it appears, one more sensor in the Galaxy S10 is not working as it should. Several users are complaining that the Galaxy S10 auto brightness or the ambient light sensor is not working perfectly.
Galaxy S10 auto brightness – what’s the issue?
Affected users have raised the issue on social platforms and Samsung’s product forums (first spotted by tech site PiunikaWeb). Users complained that the brightness level does not automatically come down in low light. So, they have had to do it manually, but it remains at the set level even when the light is good.
“Sometimes I have to manually turn down my brightness if I turn off the lights in my bedroom for example. Or if i turn on the lights, brightness stays on the same level. But if i turn off my phone display then turn it back on, the brightness is suddenly changed,” one user said.
Further, users also say that with adaptive brightness turned on, the screen goes dark when facing the sun. “White highlights are bright blue, and all colors are distorted. It’s unusable. Spin back around or go into the shade, and the screen comes back to normal,” one user said on Reddit.
Users say that this was not the case with the Galaxy S9, where the auto brightness feature worked perfectly. One user even claims that the Galaxy S10 doesn’t even have a light sensor, instead, maybe there is some in-display sensor that needs a software fix.
“..even if you put your finger on the front camera the auto brightness still moves …..also if you acces this *#0*# you cannot find the light sensor because it’s not there like old samsung phones,” one user said on Samsung’s product forum.
Adaptive brightness to blame
Several users believe that the adaptive brightness is to blame here, and so they have turned it off. However, turning it off is not a solution, and many users agree to that.
“This is a huge problem, and should not be happening on a new phone. The adaptive brightness is a major feature of the phone, and simply turning it off isn’t an option as far as I’m concerned,” one Reddit user said.
It must be noted that Adaptive Brightness came with Android 9. It is an AI based feature that gets better with time. Meaning, it would learn from the interactions that users make with the screen brightness slider, and over time, it would customize the brightness automatically to meet the users’ needs.
Google says that in its testing for Adaptive Brightness, it found that half the test users made fewer adjustments to the slider after a week of using the Adaptive Brightness.
Not an issue, give it some time
Based on Google’s explanation, it seems, users need to give some more time for their phones to adapt to the Adaptive Brightness. Even Samsung’s explanation of the issue with the Galaxy S10 auto brightness is somewhat similar.
“From Android P, a user’s brightness setting pattern is learned, and when the user sets a specific brightness the automatic brightness is controlled to be closer to that specific brightness…… However, when you set the brightness, the brightness can be applied immediately in the short term. If more than 30 seconds after the screen is turned off and the ambient light environment changes by more than 60%, this short term setting brightness will return to the light that was relearned,” Samsung developers say.
Additionally, developers say that users can reset the brightness curve to start the learning process again. To do this, go to Settings – Apps – Show system apps – Device Health Service – Storage – Manage Storage – reset Adaptive Brightness.
All this explanation from Samsung developers and Google could mean that the complaints from users about the Galaxy S10 auto brightness are valid, but it still is not an issue. Things will get better with time as AI learns more about users’ preferences.
Though it is not a bug, affected users do not seem very satisfied as they still have to live with inferior quality images (even if for some time until AI applies the learning).
“Not sure it’s a error to be replicated per se. It’s just an inferior looking quality of image. They will have to make the comparison to see the very obvious difference,” one user said.

There are actually two light sensors: front and back of the phone.
Unlock the device without pressing the power button and only by placing your fingerprint on the sensor.
The light sensor starts checking the environment light only in this situation

I just got my Asus tf701t and, while first using it, the home and back buttons did not work in portrait mode and the screen would change brightness at varying time intervals (usually a few seconds) when the brightness was set very low. an update to 4.3 cured the back and home button issue but the screen still can't stay at one brightness level when I set it to very dim. It's not changing dramatically, more like a few percent, but enough to be distracting.
The odd part is that the dimming/brightening issue almost seems application dependent. It occurs far more often in the home screen or skout but almost never when playing shadowgun dead zone or when using naked browser.
Does anyone else have similar issues?
The only posts about flickering on other people's tf701t seem to be related to power saving and I need to know if this needs to be exchanged or if this is a common problem.

I don't have the flickering when not on auto and lowest setting.
However some apps can dimm the screen while loading.
On the TF700 the stock browser did that when loading a page but on the TF701 the brightness doesn't do that.
You have an ambient light sensor built into the device. It adjusts the brightness based on the lighting in your environment. It can't be turned off either.

It can't be turned off? So when you turn on automatic brightness it just changes the brightness more drastically? This doesn't sound right.
Based on the other poster's response, I think I need to return this unit. The screen dimming/brightening happens to often and randomly to be part of my apps and I even noticed, in some apps, that just touching the screen causes a brightness change.
Even if this is by design, it is far too distracting.

My 701 is doing this as well. Turned off auto brightness, turned off power saver, rebooted. When it comes back up the device acts like auto brightness is on, with screen brightness fluctuaating randomly. Turning power saver on and off again seems to solve it, but that behavior is very annoying - it's why I turn auto brightness off in the first place.
US SKU running 4.3 installed via ota, no root or unlock or anything - straight stock. Its also my second device, my original had a bad cable and wouldn't charge. Serial number ends in 072259.

I also tried turning power saver mode on and off and for me it seemed to improve the situation but not eliminate it. I am going to return the tablet and wait for the nexus 10.

I'm quite convinced it's a software "feature" but currently there seems to be no way to turn it off?
It's one of those "Adjust brightness of the screen based on content" or "Changing LCD refresh rate and colors for power saving" but sadly it does it the wrong way around (This has been going on for a while now, manufacturers don't really get it). When there is a lot of bright content the brightness will rise and when there is mostly a dark screen it will fall.
Of course, this should happen exactly the other way around. When there is a lot of bright/white on my screen it should lower and when there is mostly black it should become brighter thus giving you more contrast but keeping the overall lux that comes off your screen the same...... My Intel graphics notebook does this too and it's very irritating. There they do it by manipulating the LCD screen and lowering the refresh rate and other tricks to save battery. First thing I turned off.
However way it goes though, you should be able to turn it off!

I'm having the same issue. I think it's the smart dimmer option Asus have used before but they forgot to include it in the Asus customised options. I'll have a dig through the ROM to see where it is stored.

It is very annoying when reading magazines that have a lot of white background. My screen will be stable for minutes then, often on a touch, will change the screen brightness, seemingly by 5-20%.
I was just getting ready to return it, and thought I would check here to see of anyone else has this problem. Has any actually called Asus with this complaint? I would be interested to know if they see this as a hardware defect, software bug, or working as designed.
PS - I just placed a technical support request about this on the Asus Website. Here is my problem description:
Even with automatic brightness & power saving turned off, the brightness of the screen will change over time, often seemingly in response to a touch. (Reading Mode is Off as well.)
The period between changes can vary from several minutes to 30 seconds. It happens both while docked and undocked. It happens with apps and just at the launcher.
The amount of brightness change is 5-20% and it will often seem to step through some values before it stops at a particular one.
Given how fantastic looking the screen is, this unwanted fluctuation is particularly annoying.
I also own a TF201 and have not experienced this problem on that product.

There seems to be no way to disable this. Some believe it's the light sensor, but I've taped over mine with black electrical tape and tested and I don't see any difference in the behavior. Check our my Youtube video if you are a user who doesn't see the issue (look for threads in this same XDA forum).
I've finally been able to get someone at Asus to look into this and it's been sent to TW for review. I haven't heard anything back yet. I strongly recommend that other people who are annoyed by this (I find it tremendously distracting) to search on "asus escalation" which will bring up a special mailbox. Here is the link (although I do not know if the link will work for you). This should get looked at by someone with at least some ability beyond reading a script. If enough people do this, I think that they will fix it. Since you can temporarily override it by toggling smart saver on/off, it has to be fixable by software.

I returned my tf701, waited for cyber Monday, and bought the Samsung note 2014 since the nexus 10 2 is so elusive. I put in an escalation request anyway and included a link to this thread in my complaint.

I also saw this issue on my TF701. This seems a "feature" of Tegra SoC
Just picked up an ME572c and I'm very impressed for the price. However I have noticed the screen brightness levels keep fluctuating as if the light sensor is constantly detecting different light levels.
Has anyone else experienced this?

i notice this too, but that can be related to the power saving mode. Plz turn it off and check the settings in detail. Maybe that helps.
Further inside the developer options there is another option to configure the auto brightness.
You can change the behaviour from dynamic to immediately or slow mode and active an onscreen lux, gain and brightness value display.
Btw i am not satisfied with the auto control, as for my taste the brightness is still too low in a less lighted room. Sensor is reporting 0 lux already with a brightness of 14 which would be ok for a really dark room & night but not at daytime.
What is your experience?
I tried playing with power saving mode and the auto brightness controls in developer options. While I could reduce the fluctuations, I could eliminate them completely. Unfortunately I found it too distracting and returned the device earlier today. It's a shame as everything else was quite impressive for the money.
I also found the fluctuations annoying, my solution was to turn the auto-brightness off. Honestly I dislike auto-brightness on any device, it was also one of the first things I turned off on my laptop.
I am using Lux app now and raised minimum brightness at 0 lux. Thats ok for me now.

Just bumping this to confirm this works and so that others can see. I used Developer options as well (before I found this post) and noticed the instant setting works best.
One more setting to also double check... Make sure that in developer options under auto brightness that you disable allow change gain...
Even with everything disabled it appears as if something still is changing the display. I particularly see it with something like a reddit browser when I'm viewing pictures. You click the pic, it loads and displays and then 1-2 seconds later the display adjusts based upon what is being displayed. Depending upon the picture it can be pretty annoying. I may have to root and start poking around to find out what is causing this.
with the lollipop update this issue is fixed for me.

I have the same problem. When i read, or browsing, the brightness changes in 2-3 steps.
Hi everyone, as you should know the Asus Zenwatch 3 has an AMOLED display. From my understanding this should mean when displaying the colour black, the pixels should be turned off completely (like on my S7 Edge).
I was looking at my watch in a pitch black room with an ambient watch face displaying a black background and it appeared slightly reddish. Compared with my LG G Watch R sporting the exact same watch face it was clear the LG had the black pixels turned off but not on my Zenwatch 3.
I've attached a couple of pictures taken with my phone of the Zenwatch 3 in a pitch black room, one with normal shutter speed and the other with a 2 second shutter speed. Evidently the 2 second shutter speed shows that the display is in fact not turning off the pixels. The pics were taken when the watch was charging and in ambient mode with a watch face set to true black only.
Can anyone else confirm that this is the case and maybe a reason why? I'm worried that battery life may be affected by this with always on display enabled.
Lastly on a side note, are the black lines that aren't illuminated something to worry about?
Mine is the same, including a similar set of dark lines. I've seen others on Reddit report identical concerns.

Noticed this too, thought I was crazy lol...kinda waste of an AMOLED screen.
Hmmm ok at least I'm not the only one. Hopefully Asus is able to change it in a future update.
Yeah it is weird, black watch faces aren't truly black. I think they did it so watch faces can blend into the color scheme of the watch, if you notice the color overlay on the app launcher
That's because of auto Brightness. Turn it off. This impacts battery life. I observed this on very first day after the purchase. Using manual Brightness since then.

I just tried disabling Auto Brightness but the red tinge of the black background still exists.

It doesn't happen with me. If I turn off auto Brightness the blacks go complete black. Do you have live display turned on your phones? If so try disabling it. May be this setting depends on your phone. All I can confirm is if I turned auto Brightness off amoled works perfectly.

Not sure what you mean by live display but I just have a stock S7 Edge. I prefer keeping the auto brightness on for my watch so I guess I'll have to live with it.

Live display is when some ROMs allow the screen to have a tint at night time so the blue light from the screen won't affect your eyes at night
Me too have similar display and black line like that.
Glad I'm not the only one with this condition.
I also have those black lines, was about to get a replacement but since I'm not the only one and it doesn't affect overall performance or aesthetics its fine.
Yeah I have also black lines and screen is not completely dark with totally black watch faces
Turning off the auto brightness is not a solution. Its a pain if you had to adjust the brightness all the time
Ok guys so I need to know if there is a sensor issue with my phone .I don't use auto brightness no more because if you go in the sun the brightness overrides itself to brighter than max brightness and it is the reason why I've had burn in 4 times so far and had to get the screen replaced. But I've also noticed that with auto brightness off but you have the brightness maxed out and go in the sun or shine an led torch at the sensor the screen will kick up to override max brightness sun mode out like when using auto brightness. Is this normal behaviour. Can anyone test this fpr me please .only 6 months left of warranty left
So if this is a feature its stupid ,and make sure you never put your phone on max brightness in manual or autobrightness if out side and it's sunny as it will kick in and cause screen burn .
I've factory reset it and cleared cashe still the screen in manual mode if maxed out in the sun with the brightness maxed out will auto ride to super max brightness mode .im on the oreo uk fm
Phone is uk unlocked note 8.
Anyone? I see lots of views no replys I'm sure everyone that view this thread owns a note 8?

No, this place does not , if you do not get any response , it means nobody has something useful to share, beeing rude will gain you a ban
Maybe your the only person that has this error, so no one has any advice to give other than to factory reset (which you all ready done).
Most people has moved on to other phones. So you'll have to be patient. I say is take it to the Samsung store and see if it is covered under warranty.

So i've been using auto brightness for 2 years, i don't have any burned screen. Last week I've been using phone on sun, taking a lot of pictures (brightness set to auto, on camera app its option to set it to max bright) and still no burnout. I think you should say your problem to guy who will accept your warranty next time
Well this is good to know just went to the sammy service centre and tested the phones they had there with my led torch and they all do it including the s9 plus .so it maybe always was like that or it's been added into a fw.

I will add that friend have a s8, his screen is good. Also another friend had note 8 and now note 9, always autobrightness on, no problems so far.
I have a little experiment
1st, I set auto brightness on, turn on a torch on the sensor, brightness go to max, then turn it off, and brightness go to middle (room light on)
2nd, set the auto brightness off, slide the brightness to minimum, turn on the torch to sensor, and brightness remain to minimum, nothing change
So I assume maybe it's a software feature I don't have, you can check with your friend running the same firmware, or you can check using *#0*# on keypad, click on sensor, look for light sensor, and do a simple test, see how much lux you have when you're on direct sunlight, or in a room, then you can flip your phone down / reverse the light source, the lux sensor must be read it on continuous count, as you flip your phone, the number will get decrease

You did the test wrong friend you need to turn off auto brightness and slide the brightness slider to max brightness it must be fully maxed .then shine led torch at the sensor then the brightness overide kicks in and goes even brighter just like In auto brightness mode.but if the slide is not fully maxed it won't do it

Interesting you mentioned all devices do this before you went to the service centre and confirmed it. That admission renders your entire post pointless. If all the devices does this, it means it's not a fault on your sensors or anything on your side, and it means it's indeed just a feature.

I said imo that all devices have this issue. Because bothe my note 8 amd 9 have the same issue .and i found a thread on reddid where 2 others also had the same issue.its not a feature because it can damage the screen it must be a software bug that Sammy need to fix

Ah I see, after doing that, I found out that the screen goes brighter and the colors seem to be fade out
Maybe it will help us to watch better when we got under direct sunlight (I think it's not a bug)
But in real life usage, I have my adaptive brightness turn on, then when I think it's too much bright at the moment, I will manually adjust it to my desire brightness
So that the system will learn the pattern and will apply automatically next time I had the same condition
Doesn't do that with mine and I live in Hong Kong.
If I keep the brightness to the Maximum, I notice that in bright sunlight/extremely bright indoors, the screen gets Automatically even brighter and dims when the phone notices the environment is not that bright !!!!
You can experiment by shinning a flash on the top right side of the phone with slider on max brightness.
Isnt it stupid – When the user have disabled auto brightness or any power saving modes the phone keeps getting bright and dark
I cant believe Samsung has let it pass this to the production models…

I think it is intended as you see there's a color RED at the far end of the brightness scale, and that's signifies the most extreme situation the screen can go, which in prolonged use may damage he display. But still, it can provide a elevated readability when you are out under sunlight... And return to safe margins so as to prolong the life of the display...

I own A50/A70 and checked this and it also seems to happen on S10 !
I am still getting mad of my phone often getting dim/bright ((
