What Are The Most Common Pie Upgrade issues?/Warnings? Possible to Roll Update back? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Didn't know if this has been made yet but is there a comprehensive list of the most common Android Pie Issues or things to be aware of moving from Oreo or Nougat to Pie?
I myself am on a T Mobile Note 8. I've been holding off on updating because I don't know enough of what they take away and what breaks.
The only thing I know of is that Device Maintenance Edge panel is gone. I use that Edge panel quite a bit.

Call recorder its gone too.

No. I have the call recorder on my N950N running Pie. Some countries have the call recorder disabled due to legal restrictions

Initially I was worried that the battery performance had declined, but after about a weeks usage I have found that the battery life is even better! It does take time for the update to settle in!
Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk

Has the update been worth it? And can you rollback?

yes, it is possible, to any firmware with bootloader version 5

how can I install Pie without changing my bootloader?

i am not sure whether this problem of mine was before pie or not but i just started to notice it now..
my issues is with the push notifications delayed/not receiving while on mobile data but works fine when connected wo wifi. the "push notification tester" app also shows success every single time while i am connected to wifi while on mobile data it is not! it works for a while and then after it never pushes the notifications leaving notifications to come through only on opening the app.
also the internet connectivity in general with the mobile data works fine like chrome browsing, news, etc.. only the notification are affected. upon googling the same i am seeing a lot of folks complaining on the same with different network/carrier/service providers but there hasn't been one working solution for the same
has any one faced anything similar with the recent android versions - oreo or pie ? have any solutions pls ??

Things missing from oreo in pie I've noticed and had to go back to oreo.no edge lighting in samsung music,no apps work to hide the status bar for full immersive ,substratum don't work on pie so can't remove the Battery percent from always on display, really poor battery life 5 hours screen on time vs 8 hours on oreo, super ugly childish ui,wasted space at top of ui ,lots of stutters and a bit of lag here and there where there was none on oreo, one ui is not consistent throughout the entire ui colours messed up in certain apps so hard to read text .not all apps are updated to have the one ui look.camera layout sucks, audio quality volume goes up and down sometimes in headphones.bixby key can't be stopped like in oreo, clock in upper left and cant be put back to the right, can't use custom wallpaper in messaging app, Plus much more .I'm so glad I'm on oreo pie is not buit for the note 8 note 9 s8 or s9 imo
Ps smart lock was terrible on pie aswell it pretty much did not work

How were you able to go back down to Oreo?! I thought that was not possible. Were you using stock Pie?

I have 2 note 8 UK unlocked and uk ee the ee phone auto updated after I kept on delaying the update 9 times.i did not roll back I'm using my unlocked uk note 8 that was still on oreo .I used bk to block the promt.but I hear you can roll back from pie to oreo using Odin. But I'm not good with things like that.i sold my ee note 8 that got pie forced into it as the phone was ruined.its a disgrace that Sammy forced us to update and ruin our beloved phones

Will a custom rom fix my Mi 8 problems? Stock camera is a potato

Recently I got my Mi 8 running MIUI 10.0.0.3.0 (Stable). It is a global version with a locked bootloader right now.
I got a few problems:
1) Camera shutter sounds within whatsapp/instgram even in silent mode
2) No notifications in the topbar (I heard that the beta solved this), only if slide the notification bar down
3) Camera quality, oh gawd. It's really awful and like two steps down from my S7 Edge. Red colors are shown orange and the details are missing. This is ridiculous. Saw a few reports about this.
4) Sometimes even with silent mode on I hear the notification sound
Most imporant point is 3) that I want to get fixed. Will a custom rom fix my problems?
Also got any recommendation for a custom rom? I want it stable, maybe a few tweaks (like accu percentage) and I need magisk for google pay.
Try Havoc or Pixel3ROM and see if you like any of them.
Can you post camera samples? I"m curious to see what bad shots on the phone look like. Mine are excellent.

Some if not all of these can be fixed after an update. You should also attempt to mess with the camera AI, HDR, etc. to see if your results change. Usually custom roms make it uglier, but IDK about the Mi 8. GCam seems to be stealing the show, try that perhaps?

He may be talking about the pixelation issues, especially when using some app's camera feature, or in poor indoor lighting conditions. In the beginning I broke my head as to how it scored such a high DxOMark when I took shots in my place, which is not that great. Then took some outdoor shots, shots at a friend's place (with better lighting) and some shots in very low light at night and was stunned.
I also got the mi 8 since my S7 Edge is getting old and when playing with the camera on my office I noticed massive flickering (banding/white pulsing effect)s.
I know this is "normal" but I comparing with my old S7 Edge and some random colleagues iPhone 6 and the flickering was definitely much worse on the Mi 8.
I tried to change the band frequency in the settings but the improvements were minor.
Can this be a defect of my phone or does the Mi 8 camera just sucks on this?

Anyone else having these issues ??

I have just had to factory reset my phone after just 3 months of use. Coming from being a heavy nexus and pixel user I always noticed little Samsung animation stutters when navigating the UI... Even open and closing the app drawer stutters when swiping up and down which I'm very surprised about for a phone with this amount of power and all the praise it gets from reviews. Don't get me wrong the phone is still snappy but I'm very sensitive to animation frame drops.
As time has gone on I've noticed really severe frame drops even when unlocking the phone to the home screen using the finger print scanner and even using the finger print scanner started to not work and could take 2 or 3 presses before it would unlock the phone and even then it would lag and take a few seconds to actually open the phone once it had recognised the fingerprint and made the unlock sound
So far since resetting it has been better but I wouldn't want to keep resetting every few months cos Samsung can't make a decent UI. Has anyone else experienced these types of issues or am I just unlucky???
I have the phone scheduled to auto reset once a week to keep it fresh but that obviously didn't help.
I turn off animations. Also, get off the Samsung Experience launcher, which helps a lot.
I'm sensitive to that stuff too and this helps it all go away.

Thanks I'll try using Nova launcher and see if that helps.
My fingerprint scanner gets laggy sometimes too. It's odd. Because it never happened on my Note 8.
I've got a 512GB Note 9 coming in the mail (hopefully tomorrow), so I'll see how the 8GB vs my current 6GB Note 9 does.

LOL! Maybe! It finally arrived at the local post office last night, but it's not out for delivery yet. Nor is it showing as expected to be delivered today. Usually by this time in the morning, my packages are showing out for delivery. It's all so weird.
I must admit my Samsung note 9 is edging towards 1 of my worst phone purchases.
Fingerprint sensor isn't as great as what I thought it would be nor is the biometrics unlock.
Wifi calling has pretty much stopped working since a few updates back. On EE UK.
Only get wifi calling with volte turned off.
Constantly missing emails and texts for some reason I dont seem to get notifications come through. So I would open my text messages app and notice texts from hours earlier which didnt notify me in any way same with emails which didnt come through but yet sat unread in my emails app.
Definitely not as smooth as my previous Oneplus 5 cant see how because it has Samsung ui on top it should be expected.
The S**t thing is I bought it on the upgrade programme so paying monthly.

Why are you downgrading back to Oreo 8.1? Official pie issues thread

Very buggy! Big icons look like they are for blind people, who can’t find there apps! No call recording, themes don’t work! i found it so dull maybe in 6 months when it comes more stable and compatible with Good lock and the bugs are ironed out I might upgrade..
Also I only used for less the 2 days, I’m sure there was some more issues but I hated it. Oreo Rocks! Well that's my 2 cent!!

Yay...another Pie impressions thread.
I am also thinking about reverting to Oreo. After all I was fine with it. Especially now that Pie brings me the "broken" split screen (not Sammy fault but anyway), bad UI design like rounded corners and ugly icons, Good Lock still not working, other apps not supported (some themes and such). But I also know that Oreo will not be updated at all, and there may be other features that I'd miss. I want to live with my time, not refuse the future of our phones. So maybe I'll get used to... but that's been a month and nothing has really changed and I'm kind of getting tired of this.
Maybe I would revert to Oreo and then try out Pie later this year, when things appears to get better. I don't know. Does anyone else feels like downgrading too, or already did? Do you miss some Pie features (lift to wake, rotate on-demand, AOD features, night mode...)?

just flashed official yesterday but have been on Pie beta 2 for some time. I dont find it to be all that bad. I have heard of BT issues but have not had a chance to really test it out yet. That will be tomorrow. As of now i see no reason to move backwards.

Downgraded about a month ago never looked back or front however you want to put it!
Night mode it’s just a theme lol AOD had a bug or two your contact info or something like that wasn’t being shown! Alos just turn on blue light for night mode its easy on the eyes!
Tons of people have downgraded! ONE UI PIE 9 has been so rushed, it's like Samsung just make sure main things work and leave the actual stuff that us end user need to last or don’t even work..
i don’t think I’ll ever upgrade to ONE UI PIE 9 on the NOTE 9! I’m going to keep it on Oreo 8.1 and just get a NOTE 10 X for whatever o.s out then!
Note 9 runs awesomely on Oreo 8.1 what’s the point of upgrading ?
Constant bluetooth issues with my car caused me to downgrade, I agree ONE UI seems very rushed.,
Bluetooth issues between my car, actual phone and Galaxy watch - call coming in only on watch, unable to transfer to phone
Missing video recording button in camera app, now you have to swipe to video mode to be able to record, I don't know why I have to do 2 steps
Missing floating button in camera app - previously you could put recording button anywhere on the screen - useful for one handed recording
No extra volume when making a call over the ear speaker - my biggest issue, don't know why they removed it, the sound was terrible even before
No call recordings - need that for my work
and last issue - gay icons, or like circus paintings icons, the over saturated colors and nonexplanatory icons, common Samsung, this is a business people phone, can you do better than this?
I am very sorry I updated, already downloading Oreo 8.1 and will work on downgrade tomorrow. Very disappointment with this build.
Well, currently downgrading... Did all needed backups, now flashing ARL3 back, and getting ready to reinstall and reconfigure everything... for the better I hope *sigh*
Why would anyone go back to Oreo lol , you will not get OTA patches and fixes if decide to stay on Oreo , it's everybody own decision what you want to do with your phone but not a good idea to stay on a firmware that wont get support no longer, Just my 2 cent on this.

Well I prefer getting back features that I use often instead of OTA patches and fixes. I ran my previous phones on custom ROMs which didn't provide latest patches and I was very fine with it, because I had what I though was good for me And for now, in the state Pie is right now, I feel like Oreo is better for me. After a month on Pie, I don't enjoy using my phone as I did on Oreo, so I decided to revert

Personally I didn't encountered any issues, my beef is with the aesthetics, seems to me that they rushed it out, the GUI is horrendous, even adjusting the DPI in the screen settings leaves us with a big and unpolished interface, icons, notification bar and everything seems so over sized and tasteless.
Downgraded the next day, for now i'll stick to Oreo.

If you rely on using bluetooth hands free talking in the car, that is reason enough to downgrade. Bluetooth phone calls simply do not work for most people in the official Pie update (worked fine in 8.1). This is a very important safety feature, not to mention in some states you cannot hold and talk on the phone while driving. Wonder if someone who gets a ticket will try to have Samsung reimburse them...

Only reason I'm thinking about it is I miss having VoLTE. I have sprint and with oreo there was a work around to get it. Now the only half assed way to get it is to be on wifi calling then it'll work but only for that call

Only because there is no Xposed or Substratum system themes yet (I like dark themes, not black themes).

So funny, we have beta versions with fixed notifications since months! And Xiaomi only releases security patches for stable ROMs... I guess they are focused on Android Q and MIUI 11 so we can't expect anything new on Pie but the good news is that it's planned for Mid October for Mi 9 so we don't have to wait too much more

There is no Digital Wellbeing in latest EEA ROM or I'm missing something.
DC Dimming is not working like it should be, at least with me, namely when I turn this option on, on broad day light i get some strange pulsing backlight behavior.

DC Dimming works for me with none of your problems, but I don't like the colors and how it looks at low light. I don't really have a problem with flicker at low light so I don't use it.

Glad to hear it that everything is working for You as it should.
Now, it's hard to describe this issue I have and I will not describe this as flickering rather as background light goes from high to low in intensity, like that it's following some amplitude of very low frequency (few Hertz's).
Though I didn't noticed any discoloration when DC Dimming is active.

By flickering I meant the flicker at low screen light that DC-dimming (anti-flicker) is supposed to remedy. Not everyone sees that flicker, or at least isn’t sensitive to it.
I don’t really know if it’s discoloration or if it’s just that the contrast is off or something else that makes me feel uneasy with the screen at low light and DC-dimming enabled.

I personally did noticed this "flickering" at low light environment-screen so I see this flicker but fortunately it wasn't such a big issue to me.
When this new iteration of ROM has came to life and inside was this new DC dimming option, I have told to my self "hey, look at this, excellent" but to my disappointment, i have this issue. I believe that this will be solved in new ROM, as always with Xiaomi developers, two steps forward, one step back!
At me, when this option is activated, i personally didn't noticed or felt any uneasiness, discomfort or anything like that?!
Strange!
P.S.
Maybe I have some issue with light intensity sensor but I have tested sensor in CIT and everything was as it should be?!
Strange!
Updater app is really buggy. I have to let screen turn on and update open or download speed will reduce to 50 kbps.
On time download 520 MB and after reboot failed to install. next time It's download 2.4G update file. I had to clear data updater app.
by the way after a few hours It's downloaded and installed successfully.
After update I noticed that I have something is downloading and take total of bandwidth! finally I found it with WatchDog 3G app. yes it was Updater download and download again and again and never stop.
So I had to go to updater and check for updater, as soon as I tap to check update the download progress bar appeared so I tapped and download stopped.
XIAOMI is a great company but they didn't pay attention to softwares very much.
I hope MIUI 11 will change my idea.

General Hey i've got MIUI 12.5.1 on my Redmi Note 10 Pro (Global)...And...

...It is still crippled by the forced feature of only having 10 seconds AOD! i hoped and prayed this would of been sorted by now with the infamous MIUI 12.5.
It obviously didn't matter about the other threads i posted (and asking support over on Twitter) as it seems nobody else is bothered? so it appears other users are happy to either resort to rooting their phones and using Magisk or removing MIUI optimisation via developer options just to have a working AOD?
I for one am NOT! why should i? Its dangerous and you lose certain elements. i bought the phone for this feature, they took out the notification light so the least they could do is have an AOD that's, you know...ALWAYS ON!
I'm sick of having to wake my phone all the bloody time just to see if anything has turned up or if i missed a call when i wasn't around near my phone. This is not too much to ask, but it seems everybody else is fine with it? WHY?
On topic, i don't see much change from 12 apart from the sounds being different, a slight increase in speed..oh an the volume bar is different..woo!
(notes got an update waaay before i received 12.5 so that was nothing new.)
Oh, AND STILL NO SUPER WALLPAPERS!
Colour me unimpressed.
P.s this is copied from my MI account on their forums, so not specifically aimed at XDA folks.
Totally agree with you, I've heard they do this to make the false sensation of this being a premium feature, so they push users to buy expensive phones.
For 12.5 I expect proper AOD, super wallpapers and FIXED DEEP SLEEP.. Im tired of losing 20% battery overnight
Plus 1 on the AOD 10 second issue, there's absolutely no point in AOD if it's only on for 10 seconds. I've submitted an issue with Xiaomi Services and Feedback and they came back saying it was for battery drain reasons, which is bull****! Makes more sense to add the option for always on instead of 10 seconds and let the user decide!
My 168 hours will be up this afternoon at which time I'll hopefully be unlocking my BL and flashing MiuiMix. It gives the option to have AOD always on.
I totally agree, I shouldn't have to flash a rom just to get a working AOD but I also want call recording and if MiuiMix on my Mi 9T Pro is anything to go by, it is much better than stock.
I'll see how MiuiMix goes and I might also have a play with the unofficial LineageOS release that looks promising as well.
Yeah it's pretty bad, I got a reply from the developers saying it's for battery too, seems to me it's an artificial cap for their low end devices.

Yep total bollocks on the battery drain issue. If anything i waste more battery turning the bastard on and off every frigging 5 minutes (at full brightness) just to see if anything has turned up! An AOD (like on my GF's Mi9 is in a very low brightness state which moves every 2 minutes to prevent burn in) should be implemented on their midranges too...But it seems like it's a feature deliberately only available on their flagship products...If that's the case it's discriminatory and bang out of order.
Please guys tweet @XiaomiSupport as much as possible and get Redmi Note 10 users to do the same, also use the inbuilt feedback on your phones...i'll post a screenshot in a tick on how to do it.
Come on comrades if enough of us keep harassing and threatening to boycott they will have to take notice.
1 : Settings (scroll right to the bottom)
2 : Service and feedback (ignore FAQ)
3 : Suggestions (tick box)
4 : Enter your grievance (I did mine via my phone so due to predictive text a few mistakes, but you get the gist)
5 : Select item (home screen + settings - always on display)
6 : enter your email. (Send)
Try and highlight that is not too conserve battery as you waste more battery turning it on and off, and that their flagship phones have it... If you pre-empt their stock reply you have more chance of not being fed bull****.
Good luck lads
Man just turn off miui optimization and is aod

You can't do it any longer Xiaomi have greyed out the option. (or it just isn't there)

Near the bottom of developer options there should be an option in the Autofill section called 'reset to default values'. Apparently if you tap this a few times the switch for MIUI optimization will appear again
Yep, pretty annoying. That's why I switched to PixelExperience I did notice a battery drain though when using it.
I'm now using NotifyBuddy, an app that only turns on AOD when I have a new notification. It replaces the notification led. Works well.
