Android 9 update broke ability to Wifi Tether without root! - LG V40 Questions & Answers

What a bummer! I used to use settings database editor to enable wifi tether. Worked fine. Android 9 broke this, now it says "a network issue may be preventing..." It does still turn on and my devices can connect to it, but no internet
This is so disheartening! Any solutions?

no. But if I can root this thing and that allows me to enable thethering, then I will go that route.
Otherwise, I might just downgrade to 8.1. 9.0 doesnt seem to be any different anyway. And I need tethering... Like right now, I am trying to verify my VNC works from outside my LAN... I used to just connect my phone to my laptop and bam, I can prove it works from a different IP.
Freaking frustrating. Every version of android tries to lock down Wifi Tether. I paid for my 5GB allotment, why the hell do they care how I use it?

Wait what carrier are you with? And simple to make more money you have your normal internet on your plan And then you have the 1-100GB for tethering that you can add on to your plan for a certain amount of money, me being in sprint on the highest plan I get 10GB for hotspot/tethering.

I'm on cricket. Why would I pay extra to use the same 5GB that i never use up every month? It's stupid. You're right, it's a scam. That's why I want to hack the tether for free. I have always found a way to do it in the past... and it worked on this phone with android 8....

i tried. its not just a carrier block... android 8 worked fine with "settings database editor" app. after android 9 update it no longer works. I do get past the authorization check but then it pops up "something wrong with the network, check carrier"

There is a Magisk Module that supposedly works but you would have to personally check.

I upgraded my LM-V405QA to Pie and can native tether just fine. Since it is the unlocked version it does not perform any entitlement check.
It sounds like perhaps whatever you did to enable tethering on Android 8 no longer works the same way on 9, and that is why you get that message.
The module that @Ainz_Ooal_Gown mentioned does not appear in Magisk for me, however "MagiskHide Props Config" does. Using that you can set net.tethering.noprovisioning=true and reboot to bypass entitlement check.

[Q] stock out of the box 2.2 froyo wireless tethering?

I just got a brand new out of the box stock captivate, sgh-i897, i897uckb2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, froyouckb2. I have the mobile ap in wireless settings, but when I click I get a message saying not allowed. How what is my least invasive option of turning this on without paying att a ridiculous plan premium? Can it be done without flashing a custom rom? I did that to a previous cappy and had constant problems. I am not very savy at all in these matters and just simply want the dumb guy how to make wireless tethering work for me.
You have to root first. then install Titanium backup from the market. Free version is fine.
Go into titanium where is says to restore apps and you will find a list of all the aps on your phone. delete tethering manager and you should be able to tether. The message saying you need a thethering plan will still be on the mobile AP page but it should work.
Just an FYI. AT&T is tracking ppl that are using Tethering without paying for tethering. They are starting to add the tethering charge to the bill, without telling, because they assume you have read the contract. They even have gone as far as dropping you out of the data connection plan.

It's hit or miss though. There are tons of people here that say they have tethered up to several gigs and have never gotten a notice. Most of them seem to think it is from iPhone cracks. Who really knows for sure...
I have tethered for quite a while now (since about 2009, even before my captivate, without the plan. I don't use it as much as those people, but do use it regularly, and have never been notified. I look at it like this: I don't think they will cancel a plan - they want our money. If they add thethring to my plan without telling me, I will just simply take it off. that's that.
edit:
and no, I'm not trying to rehash the whole tethering/plan argument. Just trying to let the OP know what I have read...

grab the zip I uploaded. unzip it. run SuperOnneClick in the folder. Make sure your phone is on AND in debugging mode (in settings/apps/development)
click Rook, then, after that finishes, click Allow non market apps. may take a couple of times.
The version I attached is the only one I could get to successfully root stock 2.2
Let me know if you have problems.
edit: i corrected the path to debugging mode (above).

Google's WiFi Tether app

Has anyone been able to get any version (2.0.7 or 3.x beta) of Google's WiFi Tether app working on their rooted Droid Bionic? Link to app
It didn't seem to work for this guy at the end of the video: Link
For me tethering is critical for work and I don't want to activate my Droid Bionic (which is coming tomorrow) until it can be confirmed working. Will keep using Thunderbolt for now... I can also imagine this is a huge issue for many other users.
However, I am aware that Motorola devices need some kind of device profile in the "Change Device-Profile" option in the settings of that app, has anyone played around with that, maybe choosing the Droid X or other Droid?
Any feedback greatly appreciated...
I hope you find a solution soon, I also have the same problem
Don't bother until a custom ROM comes out that can "hide your ass".
Since it is for work, paying for the monthly tether should be a business expense.
I tried some of the work-arounds on the net... barnacle did not work for me... choosing the droid x profile in device setup at least showed my wifi hot spot, but I could not obtain an IP... I had also noticed errors about dhcp in the log.

exactly, in the mean time your going to be stuck using PDAnet and a USB cable.
Got it, rooted it, figured it out. Use version 2.0.7. Change the LAN option to 10.10.1.x
Also it only works in ad-hoc mode but at least its a start. I'm sure updates will fix it.

Can't get 3 beta to work at all but it doesn't offer anything other than ad-hoc mode also. Also doesn't show data going through on the app. But hey at least it works.
Can anyone confirm the 2.0.7 wireless tether working?
not working
2.07 not working for me even using the 10.1 network. clients fail to obtain an IP address.
Same problem here - wifi tethering not working...
The newest 3.x didn't work for me. Has anyone tried manually setting the client's IP/Gateway/DNS? I don't remember what the dhcp issued on my incredible, otherwise I'd go grab my laptop and mess around with different static settings.

It takes a long time I noticed. Wait for the little blue notification icon to appear that shows the device is connected. Can take as long as 3 minutes sometimes but it works for me I assure you. The key thing is the 10.10.1.x network which is still unblocked because VPN's can use that network, anything other than that won't work.
I can't get wifi tehthering to work but just using the phones built in usb tehering option works and does not send me to a page to subscribe for tethering. Don't know why this works but if I try the built in wireless tethering it says I have to sign up. EDIT Was working on launch day but tried again today and won't work so I guess the system wasn't updated the first day I tried it.
Hi,
I found way to enable Hotspot without Verizon Provisioning. I used SQLLite Editor to modify settings.db for "Settings Storage" application ( com.motorola.android.providers.settings ). Set entitlement_check to 0 and reboot the phone.

I just tried this. It appears to be working. I was able to connect and browse from my laptop. Now the question is, does Verizon still know I'm tethering even though I'm not paying to tether?
I second. Works for me a well, with no warning or pop up. Cudos to you my good man
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Just did it and all seems fine so far.
btw, WOW. Ive never poked around the databases like that. Everything from the hdmi overscan to wifi info is in there. That is So cool.
Works for me too! However, only works properly with WPA security. If Hotspot is set to "open", you can connect but get no internet...

VZW unlimited data hotspot - FoxFi

Wasn't sure how to title this one, really, and if it's deemed that it should be moved/deleted, feel free. Just wanted to drop down a note on here for other people who may be in the boat. I'm on an older unlimited plan (95 GB this month and counting, couldn't imagine that on a tiered plan holy F...) And coming from my rooted G2, I realized I was gonna be hurting for hotspot connectivity. I use it to pair off the Android in-dash in my car, to tether my PC at home for the LTE speeds for netflix, and general internet stuff. Naturally I tried turning it on to see, and sure enough, wouldn't turn on and directed me to customer service to provision. So I was trying to see what I could find out, and crossing my fingers that maybe someone would find a way to open up that. Quick search on the way home returned FoxFi, though PdaNet. now. I had never used it, but so far so good for Wireless tethering. Using it now. There's a button for a premium version, though limited info as to the difference. The free version I guess is supposed to stop after a preset time. However, I've been on for a good forty minutes as of now, and while a pop-up did show up on the phone (dunno when, I just happened to turn on the screen and saw it), the data is still going through fine regardless. Maybe a matter of time before it is updated to catch up? But even so, the paid is 8 bucks right now, and I'm thinking well worth it.. Just figured I'd let people know that it, as of now, is working fine for the S6 for wireless hotspot for Unlimited Data plans.

FoxFi working fine for me as well. Glad it is was one of my worries as well.
So on FoxFi is that subscription message briefly blinking on then off and then the built-in tethering turns on? Or does the message stay on but tethering works anyhow?
I currently have a the Xperia Z3v and FoxFi fails to turn on the built-in tethering option until that message is able to be skipped. Sometimes it takes once, sometimes it takes 50 times but eventually I get the subscription message to just blink on then back off and eventually it forces the tethering on, no data throughput until the message goes away though.
Also are you guys using any hashcode in FoxFi to get it working? I had to use the hashcode TEST on previous Verizon devices to get it working.

In my case, I have three lines. Mine has unlimited, the other two lines are tiered. So I've been using their upgrades, and then swapping the phone over. My phone has been eligible forever, but I've made it very clear I do not intend to ever use it. And as soon as any rep questions it, they take one look at my usage and go "Oh... yeah, I see why you're staying on the old one". And even if I didn't have an upgrade available, I'd just buy it outright instead. Still a ton cheaper than paying the extra that I'd need for my use.

Sorry, saw this late. When I go into the app, it doesn't do anything. You click on enable hotspot, it pops up a box that takes you to the Mobile Hotspot setting and you turn it on there (regular phone hotspot). That's all that it does. At that point, I just sit the phone down, and go about my way. Only once have I had it drop and then when I pick up my phone, it's just a notification that says "click here to reactivate internet" or something like that. I finally broke down and just paid the 8 bucks for it to get it out of the way, but even the "free" version let me stay online for quite a long period, even without the box coming up at all most of the time.

Do you by any chance subscribe to the Hotspot feature on your plan? Because on every other Verizon device there used to be a little box that popped up that says you must subscribe to turn it on. I'd be VERY surprised if Verizon forgot to add it here.

I have unlimited data without the hotspot feature. When I try to use the built-in hotspot utility I get a message about needing to subscribe, however when I installed FoxFi it tells you to then go to the built-in hotspot and enable it, which works. However if you quit FoxFi and try again it fails, so FoxFi is doing something in the background that lets you use the built-in tethering feature.

I don't subscribe to it as it doesn't really play well with my plan without making me switch lol. If I DON'T run FoxFi (sorry, the PdaNet+ app) prior to turning that on, it gives me the prompt to call to subscribe. However, after starting the app, it comes up and after enabling the FoxFi hotspot, it then allows you to turn on the system mobile hotspot without being prompted by the Verizon provisioning check. Basically, the app allows the hotspot to turn on without having to go through that check to Verizon first.

I'm not sure if you're being intentionally vague/coy, but I think we are curious whether you are getting wireless hotspot to work natively even though you aren't paying for it. That wouldn't make much sense, but that's what you seem to be suggesting.

Wireless Tether

I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?
I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?
Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.
Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.
Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.
Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?
It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.
Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)

Thanks! I will give it a try later today. Couple of questions though:
Is there a way (using tasker maybe) to start pdanet/tethering when the phone connects to my car's bluetooth?
Should I enable the "Hide Tether Usage" option for sprint (it says its only needed for certain carriers)?
Also FYI to other Sprint users, this is blocked on the Play Store (I didn't even know apps could be blocked based on your carrier until now). But you can download the APK from pdanet.co/install

I use the hide tether option not sure about using tasker as I mainly use it with my Surface so I just crank it up when I get to the office. It works flawless usually 20-40 gigs per month.
I can't try it on this line anymore my plan now has 50g hotspot included I'm like an ESN swap it to one of my other lines and test it later

What settings are you using? I can't get it.
Flash U1 firmware.
is PDAnet available in google play store? Its been way too long for me on android and looking to get this working on my Sprint Samsung S10+. any help is appreciated. thank you!
I see the link up there to download, PDANet works okay but its annoying how it changes hotspot wifi name so I have to find the new network and enter a new password each time. Hoping for a much better solution in the future.

No certain settings check WIFI Direct Hotspot (new!), hide tether usage then click the WPS button and then click connect on the desired device.
I miss the days when we almost always had root on android devices
hey all, been looking for a solution for this for a bit and havent gotten anywhere. Tried PDANET but seems to just come up with a corrupted connection if I try to connect normally. Cant install the desktop app to try and connect that way as im needing this on my work laptop. Also trying to avoid rooting...
I have an unlocked S10
Missing that easy shortcutmaster hack from my S8
Has anyone found out a way yet? Using 6 0's as MSL still doesn't allow access to change APN's. PDANET wifi direct us slow.
You could always just pay for it with your carrier and enable it the right way in the stock settings, no? You pay almost a grand for a phone, but are too cheap to pay the extra $10 for the hotspot option? LOL

In the end I'll pay less than $380 to lease this phone. I don't know of an unlimited hotspot for $10. We pay almost $400 for 5 lines and it seems like the bill just keeps going up. Too cheap? No just tired of paying them more than they deserve, signal is great at home, where I need the hotspot, damn near useless everywhere else in town.

If you are home then you don't need a hotspot, or are you just trying to steal unlimited data from your cell carrier and run your home on it rather than pay for home internet?

The only options for internet where I live are satellite or a dish shooting from a mountain. Both are god awful expensive ($120/m for 600KBps) and slow. You seem to keep jumping to a conclusion that I'm cheap, they want $24,000 to run cable less than half a mile. From experience, Sprint is fine until you hit 1tb, they aren't stupid, I'm sure they know what I'm doing. I didn't ask for your opinion on what I should or should not buy. I'll take it as you have no information on how to enable the hotspot, thanks for your input.

Who cares what someone wants to do with their services. Help out the OP by giving them some information or don't comment at all. If you were in his position you might do the same. I know I would since the last time I used dial up speed for home internet was back in 2004.
Op something I might recommend depending on your ATT receiption at your home. Active a Cricket (ATT MNVO) on their Unlimited extra plan and pop the Sim into a cheap $50-100 unlocked international phone and you can use Hotspot for free. The plan is $60 and I've seen people ok Reddit saying they've used up to 300+ GBS with no issues.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that... I've got fiber and it's $100/mo for 1GB speed...
