Is p40 pro ip68 or not? - Huawei P40 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

I saw 3 people reporting the same damage on there phone and found this video that reproduce the problem. I think its a bit unacceptable for a €1000 unit to have this issue. https://youtu.be/nd4rJIbv2IY

Just google the specs on gsmarena: GSM Arena
It is IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 mins)

With P30 Pro tryed in pool and under the shower - ended up exactly like in video, all three camera lenses were moistured inside...Haven't tried to sink my P40 Pro...

It's water resistant and not waterproof.
If you try so hard to damage your phone via constant watering for an hour or more then no doubt it'll get damaged.

Thing is people that reported such damage never stressed it up. Simple shower usage or submerged it for less than a minure

which people? the guy from video "geardo" has actually stressed it up a lot.

Theres a facebook group called p40 | p40 pro | p40 pro plus. Loads of people reported the exact same problem. Check it out yourself if u got facebook

no not really, but thnx.
EDIT. Ok I've found this group and thread and I am still not convinced. That FB thread was really messy.
There's literally one or two guys who damaged their phones but I actually couldn't find the description how they managed to do that. Other persons barely refer to YT link you mentioned.
Please note there are also people who claim they submerged their handsets and they work just fine. Those water-damaged handsets could be thus faulty units.

Front Camera TERRIBLE!

Just got my P30 Pro today. Upgrading from a Mate 20 Pro.
The front facing camera is terrible. It's incredibly soft and it's impossible to change things for the better. I'm wondering if I've got a faulty unit as the photos from most review sites don't show blurry soft selfies.
Can anyone comment first hand on this?
Many thanks.

Can't comment first hand but that evaluation would seem to disagree with almost all the reviews.

I am one of those users who would never mind to have no front camera, but then I realize couple times a month I use hangouts video with a friend, so for me it makes no difference what sensor is there, I would be fine with crappy 720p camera, but I tested couple selfie shots when I got my p30p, and I find it quite the opposite - very sharp, detailed, maybe a bit brighter than I would expect but not soft. For me a soft photo is a photo that lacks sharpness, this is not definitely not the case. And when I turn off the "beautify" sliders it really turns them off, this was the single worst thing on Samsung phones since S6. No matter what, selfie photos taken with samsung camera app always came out horrible for me, had to use 3rd party apps.
If you don't like the output out of huawei camera app try something else, everybody has different demands and expectations. Sensor-wise the front camera seems to be very good, and app wise the huawei camera app is very decent in my opinion.
Have you got firmware 124 yet? I am on 113, but I know that 124 is rolling out and has tons of fixes, which includes the camera. I have another P30 PRo arriving Tuesday, and that will have 124 out of the box. There is absolutely no point noting any bugs until on 124.

Ok. Good to know. Might try and force the update with HiSuite.

Hello,
i'm on the newest FW .124 but still, the quality of the selfie camera is pretty terrible. Also the back cameras comparing to my P20 Pro are super soft. Don't know if it's software or hardware issue.
This is quite worrying.
I'm unsure what to expect now. Many reviews say categorically that it's better than P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro but a few of us are seeing something different.

I have 124 update and I think the front camera quality is amazing. I took many selfies and video samples today and zoomed in and the clarity and detail is impressive. Remember there is no auto focus so the sweet spot for crisp shots is 50-60cm which is literally arms length.

I'd say, the quality of the front (and not only the front) camera is quite random.
Well in my case the front camera quality is amazing way too detailed can point out all the random grey hair popping off my skull

In my opinion all the actual cameras are ok but its the terrible over processed end results from the software that we cant change that is the BIG problem with the P30 pro.
The only way to get a decent and natural non over processed image from the P30 pro is to shoot Raw(DNG) but for me if i want to mess around with raw I will use my camera.. NOT a phone.
I'm actually finding the front camera to be a lot better than my s10plus which I sealed from. I was pleased to discover.

Agreed, the Front Facing Camera is not good enough... Pixel 2 do it better.. in details and more...

Front camerA NO PROBLEME HERE!
I think there are 2 different problems at play here:
1: for the ppl saying its great for you -Congrats- you've done well to upgrade to the P30 Pro and it's relatively better front camera vs your old device.
2: The people complaining about blurry front camera are CORRECT, especially if you're coming from a P20 Pro or a Mate 20 Pro, objectively speaking - there is no comparison in general use, P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro will win almost every single shot.
Evidence: I have both the previous 20 series flagships (mentioned) - I noticed each shot on the P30's front cam was useless in comparison, blurry, very low resolved detail, with dark shadows under the eyes overly accentuated (whether you have dark circles or not, they will be over emphasised vs the 2 mentioned devices) which = the perfect recipe for an underwhelming shot every single time.
I went back twice to swap my P30 Pro for a new one at the store within the first 14 days.
Result = No change. Same level of Blur in your normal use case selfies.
The scientific analysis of the issue:
The problem is a fixed focus, which is no problem at all if the range is correct, but in this case it isn't.
- you can test it yourselves, hold your phone 1ft from your face and take a pic, then 1.5ft - 2 ft and so on, you will start to realise that the focus has been tuned to an arms length - a shot which 90% of the time you will not be taking - unless you WANT the world to see that you are taking a selfie.
Is there a benefit of this?
-Of course there is, this captures far better background detail when compared to other phones (P20 Pro & Mate 20 Pro in this case). However, this is a double edged sword, since 99% of the time in a selfie, you want the subject -yourself- to be prioritised over all else in this type of shot.
-It seems this tuning has been done to favour group selfie shots, since the distance required for a group shot is a full arms length - so this is most likely the reason for the prioritised focal range.
But make no mistake, anything closer than an arms length, the P20 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and even the Iphone XS Max is far sharper(just tested during this writeup). For full arm length selfies shots, group selfies and background detail the P30 Pro is sharper (in the distance rather than on the subject).
So there you have it, objective, repeatable shots which you can try yourself.
Get at me with your comments. P.s. Let's not talk about software updates as I'm on 9.1.0.193 (4 months in from the release).

Came to the same conclusion months ago, arms length or nothing. Not that I'm going to lose any sleep over it as I've probably took no more than 3 selfies since I've had the phone.
The front camera is pretty bad. Image wise you do need to hold the phone a certain distance to get a good image.
Those saying it's better than the s10 plus I have no idea how they can say that. Selfie camera is pretty much the only thing that Samsung smashes Huawei in.
The bigger issue I have is that it can take up to 5 seconds between pushing the shutter and the picture being taken.
Only happens with the selfie cam and it's because of software updates as this was never a problem on day one.
But yeah selfie cam on the p30 is weak. Very much so. It's up to you if the rest of the device makes up for it which for me it does

Exactly, so in this respect the phone failed majorly - we now have a device that we won't use to capture ourselves, personal memories- something that's a crucial reason to buy a newer phone in the first place. (I'm still carrying and running a 20 series device for this reason). Hugely annoying.

Most of the time this delay is a sharpening and processing - this usually makes the photo far better so that's not a problem as such, but this delay still does very little for the front camera when compared to the previous 20 series devices.
All in all - the front camera doesn't deserve to be in the presence of the rest of the hardware - since overall the device is fool proof from all angles (hardware wise) and the front camera doesn't live up to this standard.
The minimum required (expected) competence of each component is that which objectively beats the previous generation product, and in this instance, 90% of the expected use of the front cam, this just isn't the case.

CPU overheating while running camera

Hello, I got my new phone just two weeks and I noticed huge issue, or is it just faulty piece for repair? :/
Yesterday I was using phone around 30 mins, always on sun 30 ' C, phone was really hot in my hands, I was running camera all time to make videos 1920x1080 and as well slowmotion and I got this notification: Warning! Temperature too high to use Camera. Wait for phone to cool down before using Camera.
See screenshots from CPU monitor app, when 47'C I got this warning, however i am not sure if its correct temperature.
This is actually ridiculous, how about users in the world? In Asia if there is 40 ' C on sun? Is that EU CPU Exynos 9810 not able cooling on the sun? How about your experience with worldwide model with CPU Snapdragon 845???
Samsung Galaxy Note9 N960F - EU version, CPU Exynos 9810
Score in Antutu Benchmark 249267, device verification passed.
See attached screenshots, thanks for any advice

Idk, here in EU, in Croatia is around 30°C - 33°C everyday and my Note gets hot too, so I'm trying to not exposure it to sunlight that much (all of my devices got hot in that temperatures)
You should try working outside on this temps and you will probably understand why your phone gets hot!

We need phone for traveling vlog, of course we want use it outside to make videos .... But Just 30 mins and died???
So this Samsung "flagship" is useless on the sun Lol... Definitely We can last on sun much more longer than the ''flagship'' phone
Even I fly with my drone, same problem occurs, getting really hot after 20 mins of flight
So I solved the problem myself
But first I went in the Samsung authorised service and told them this problem. They checked in the computer this phone serial number and they found out that this phone is only for Hungarian market and they cannot repair for free in warranty. I live in Czech Republic and only that they can repair. That's a little bit cheating from the seller where I bought this phone, so I go back to reseller (Mobinet.cz), give phone for repair. After two weeks they give back and said they do something with software. OK, so I am testing repaired phone, But even after that I see the same problem, overheating while running camera video. And warning message pop up again.
So I changed the second party app for making video, Filmic Pro, testing even 4k video and don't have a problem at all. Phone is even physically cold, not burning, like in Samsung camera! (Even hard to hold in hands).
Anyway you should always buy phone in authorised reseller in your country or in official store, don't go for cheaper price like me.

Poor Image Quality ( lens flare)

I upgraded from the P20 pro to the P30 pro, must say the camera is a huge disappointment, lens flare and heat spots make taken a photo in the dark pretty pointless.
Never had one of these problems with the P20 pro
Is it a fault or is it effecting many others??
This is normal.
White spots on photos can be caused by light reflecting off a strong light source. It commonly appears when taking images around bright lights.
Yeah it's normal. Just use night mode when you take a photo with lights at night to lessen the lens flare
It's not normal,I am a freelance photographer and this is a fault which Huawei won't admit to.
Look at the examples below both shot in night mode of the same object, the P20 quality is superb the P30 is so bad it's unusable

Try to not use the night mode. Night mode is suggested to be used only in very dark places. If you want to use night mode, set the ISO as low as possible and the AI will avoid luminescence from artificial lights.
I can confirm, mine does not do this, so I would suspect it's specific to your device and thus a warrant claim. I find the P30 Pro camera superior to my old P20 in almost every aspect...

Hello,
I have the same configuration, have a p20pro and 'upgraded' to p30pro.
I made some kind of quick 'mirror' tests, like you did.
At first I was really disappointed because : yes the 'same' picture was so blurry and flared as yours.
I cleaned minutely the p30pro lenses and the next picture was the same as the p20pro but with more definition/details when you zoom in.
I'll try again tonight to see if it still the same.
--
When I bought it, and after a few times using it, I already feel that the p30pro is way more dust, finger prints, etc...catching device than the p20pro.
And, it's also more slippy in the hand, on the couch, desk, etc...when 'naked'.
--
My though is the lenses glass is also need to be cleaned with a soft tissue before taking pictures.
Tell me if it worked for you.
I'm really interesting in that behaviour, because the camera is an important feature for me too.
Cheers
ps: same mess and answer from the 'real life' thread.

My wife had p20 pro and night mode shots was perfect. I bought p30 pro with verry hight hope and night mode dissapoint me. I went to waranty service and they check camera and they said that nothing is wrong. The sensor is verry sensible and got to be clean all the time.with P20 pro we dont had that problem never. With p30 pro 80% picrure in night mode has glance flare. Is awefull. And we are verry dissapointed. Huawei refuse to do something about our problem.

Yes, dirty lens will give you bad pictures.
I may add...
No clear crystal clean lenses
Screw our pictures !!
Done some late test last night during full moon.
P30pro vs p20pro
With very clean lenses
And tripod
Really better details from p30pro.. Ok it's obvious
But color are way more natural with my p20pro!!
Yet not so much flare, but still, but also on p20pro
The point is, from my pov, as the p20pro's pictures are much natural its not as disturbing than the p30pro which the so (too) much 'fancy' that the blur and flare feel awkward.
Yes the settings were exactly the same on both devices.
I'm back on my p20pro now and waiting the next p30pro update... Hope they'll do something

Flare on Mate 30 Pro
The flare is way worse in Mate 30 Pro. Taking night shots using normal mode is just sooo bad I have refrained from it. Even the antilight in day time causes intense flare. Huawei should fix this with an update. Petition anyone? Lol.
I see this thread is from August so apologies for dragging up a old thread but I can't stress enough that this issue was either a defective device or was just s bad update, I can confirm from at least November's OTA onwards the flare is nowhere near as bad as on the OPs photos

Question Has heating issue of this phone been fixed?

I'm considering whether to buy this phone because how compact and elegant it is.
Thing is the heating issue I've heard of is holding me back. I've heard that the heating issue of Zenfone 8 has been fixed over the last 2 updates but I'm not quite sure about it. Can anyone confirm this? Does intense use (such as 4k video shooting or gaming) make it very hot?
And I wonder, in case it has been fixed, is the Snapdragon 888 CPU performance still the same? I'm worrying that Asus might have lower the CPU frequency or such so that the CPU generates less heat...
Hey,
Intense gaming and 4k video recording will still make the phone hot. After several minutes of 4k recording camera app will close because of overheating.

What? Maybe in Marrakesch that's true. I just did 5min 8k recording to check that nonsense statement. The phone got warm under the camera. Did not close nor did it give any warning.
Are there any phones that do not get hot during intense gaming??
I am using the provided case and the warmth is there but nothing untouchable nor risky.
I assume it depends where you live. In very hot countries you may get the warning that's it's getting hot.
@Kemez
In Munich, Germany which is not a "hot" country.
Nonsense? Not sure why you have that attitude but there are multiple threads on Zentalk forums about this issue.
Example 1: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/51884/shut-down-camera-overheating#latest
Example 2: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/49295/heating-issues-asus-zenfone-8#latest
Which says: "I am barely able to record 6 minutes of 4k 60 fps before the camera app shuts down. And mind you, this happens at an ambient temperature of about 29 °C, not 35. "
There is probably more but I didn't want to waste more time into it
I own and like the phone but the thermals are not the best and I just have said objectively what is the situation right now. Many other phones with the SD888 chipset are suffering from the same issues

So you live in the same climate as I do. My phone gave me a warning on recording once, when in direct sunlight at around 34C. It has been after around 15min of recording and cooling it in shade or water instantly allowed me to record more.
You say that the camera closes after few minutes of recording. So this happens to you often? Not in a forum - how many times did you have it?
I own flagship phones (LG, Huawei, Asus) since many years and they all get warm under some conditions. Never had any issues because of that.

So it happened to me 3 times and I switched the video recording to FHD 60fps after that.
As I said, I really like the phone, for my usage it is really good and I am sacrificing the thermals for the small form factor and performance. I anyway rarely record videos in general, so I am not at a loss.
For comparison on my previous pixel 3 during summer when the phone is in the car under direct sunlight and android auto is connected I would get the "phone is getting hot" once or twice a year. With the Zenfone 8 it never happened and it even almost doesn't get hot at all under the same circumstances, probably due to a more powerful SoC. But it does get pretty warm during gaming, I think without a case it would be impossible to hold the phone

Think carefully about buying this phone. I had a problem with a dying phone and it just came back om repair yesterday. It works, but the ASUS support leaves a lot to be desired. It heats up similarly like before, but what is disturbing only in one place - next to the camera. Previously, heat was distributed over the entire surface of device. Next thing, on sides of the back, you can see that the phone was opened. Previously the color at the edges was uniformly black, now the edges are kind of transparent and there are dust spots underneath them. Premium phone ... please ... my phone is not looking good anymore just because the manufacturer made a mistake at the production stage and it had to be repaired .... and something that annoyed me, when I was looking at the phone, I noticed that a few small particles of dust had fallen under the glass with the cameras. They are not too big to create problems with the pictures, but they are there and you can see them. I am slightly disappointed that the phone returned from an authorized service with something like that.
I have the phone about two months now, normal heat during random bit heavy tasks.
It heats a bit while playing PUBG in highest graphic setting but nothing crazy, you can play full hour with slight heat, I point fan to my phone and hands all ok.
After installing LinageOS I keep battery saver on all the time and phone doesn't heat and battery last all day long, got about 8 hours of display time (but didn't play any game all casual apps/shopping reading and music, some YouTube).
Seems like the 888 chip got more power than needed, I wish Asus make same compact phone with Dimensity or 7xx chips, that would more suits the type of people uses this phone, I think.

Question Defective S23/S23+ main lens

Dears,
As some of you might already know, most of S23 and S23+ units, besides bad camera software, very bad photo quality because of the software, have also defective main camera lens. I noticed the issue after my testing period of this crap device expired and I am not able to return it anymore. I have taken few dozens of shots recently with GCam and this defect is too prominent to ignore, not mentioning the inability to shot documents, notes, invoices, etc.
The problem is well described here: https://www.sammobile.com/news/galaxy-s23-camera-hardware-issue/
Thing is that in many countries (mine included), Samsung is trying to make people dumb, explaining this issue by a "feature" of big sensors, which is - of course - a bull****.
Samsung in Italy has reportedly acknowledged the issue and is slowly admitting that there is a hardware defect they are willing to repair: https://www.hdblog.it/smartphone/articoli/n568223/galaxy-s23-foto-problema/
Has any of you tried to make Samsung Service replace the faulty sensor? Have the service in your country been trying to tell you the bull**** about the lens characteristics and refuse the repair?
Looks like it's optical; the lense has an odd blur pattern...
All lens have blurring ie lense blur chart. It varies throughout the image. Its preferable the image is the sharpest at the center. More blur tends to happen towards the outer areas and preferably in an even pattern rather than specific spots.
This blur seems excessive though. A lense defect is what it looks like to me.
The sensor needs to be perfectly flat otherwise areas will be out of focus. If this is the case it's a gross QC oversight.
Yes, it is optical, it is a defect.
Thing is that Samsung employees are telling the bull**** and insist that's a natural bokeh caused by sensor size and they refuse repair. This is sick and that's why I wonder if this is country-specific trick to try making customers dumb or Samsung strategy for the problem.

Bokeh? Do they even know what that is?
I be ripping them to shreds...
I feel cheated paid more than 900 euro for a device, because I decided to buy of the best flagships. I could as well kept using Poco F3 with Gcam. The other day spend like 10 minutes trying to capture photo of a sick leave document to send to my employer, it was always blurry in the top left corner, so I learned that I should click focus top left corner and worked. Everyone should speak up about this problem.
I have successfully contacted my local Samsung Service.
They "have heard" something about the faulty lens and they offered a repair, but this repair would take over 2 weeks, because local services are not yet allowed to perform any service operations on S23 series. This is about to be changed late May and this is when I will try to contact them again to have my lens replaced. Hopefully for a working one.
Bad news is that the employee I was talking with was not certain if the replacement camera units they have will be free of the issue xD
I just can't believe this crap has ever been released.
Has this been fixed yet? Just bought a 256GB S23, kinda sad to see this in the forum right when I spend 800€ on it
I also bought the S23 256GB version when it got released and I don't have that problem on any pic I take. So it seems that not all units are effected.
It happens when I take picture of pages. But taking normal pictures it doesn't bother me.
Anyway, it is big drawback of this phone. Samsung silent just confirms that the problem exists.
My S23+ is the same, we have to push and show everyone interested in the S23 that they have problems and that Samsung does not admit, it is completely frustrating for a device of this price and to have worse camera performance than my S10e.

Test the camera using the main lens shooting a document, look for a curved blurry path, mine has it
With Samsung claiming it's a software thing, everyone will have it. Some people are just more sensitive to noticing it.
I have it as well, but in all honestly, I never barely ever make a picture of something closer than 50cm away.
All other pictures look perfectly fine.

I think it's hardware. Either the sensor or lense.
If so will Sammy try to cover it up with AI?
Time will tell, test revision with a random printed document...
Either way Samsung has gone overboard with their AI enhancement bs.
Another reason this 5002 mAh phone gets poor SOT in spite of its more efficient ram and what should be a more efficient SOC.
That also means a warmer running device that will run hot in ambient 100°F temperatures.

Yeah I do feel like Samsung is trying to play off the camera issues as a software thing. I'm doubtful it is as well.
Furthermore, the battery life of the S23 is great. I'm not sure what you're talking about here. The Snapdragon gen2 performs great, and quite frankly, I barely ever have to charge it before going to bed.

Specifically if the S23U is optimized what kind of SOT can it get?
My N10+ with a new battery (4100-4300 mAh) will get a 11-13 hrs SOT. Browsing with Brave uses about 6% @hr total with display brightness around 27-30%*.
With the larger 5002 mAh battery I would expect to see 14-16 hrs SOT if running nonstop if optimized similarly with 5G off and display fixed at 60hz.
Most (any?) aren't seeing this. Worse Samsung's removal of expandable storage will force many to use cloud storage which uses a lot of battery. Instead of becoming more efficient Samsung just keeps putting in bigger batteries. 4300 mAh was about as large as you want go otherwise the phone gets thicker and worse heavier. These are already hard hitting devices when dropped, that extra 30gm hurts. Samsung's solution? Give it more bezel The N10+ still has the best display to bezel ratio after almost 4 years. wtf Samsung?
Google Android didn't help any either by fully implementing cpu cycle sucking scoped storage.
Any gains Google made in efficiency elsewhere is wiped out by scoped storage. That also forced Samsung to add dozens of new small system apps to try to preserve UI functionality and appearance. What a mess.
*Optimized: wifi disabled but internet and phone always on.
Tap on AOD. Playstore, Google backup Transport and Framework disabled. Google play Services normally temporarily disabled. All global power management disabled. All carrier, app, Google and Samsung feedback disabled. And little bixby is so disabled.
I used Xperia 5 II before taking a document from main camera (24mm F1.7), the outer words always blur (can say MUST blur). But no problem if use zoom lens (70mm F2.4) but need to pull out my device from object, then the whole page are clear. I think this is the nature of main camera (cannot take an object too close).
Not only documents, when I took pictures of a dish of food, the food at the center was clear, but the edge of dish and out side were blur. So if I want entire picture clear, I usually use 70mm lens. This will look a bit strange when I took picture in restaurant.
This is my experience of using Xperia device. I am not sure about other device except I am currently using S23 coming the same issue. Therefore, I don't think it is len defect, it is how you use a smartphone to take suitable photos.
