[GUİDE] [ROM] [10] How to install Pixel Experience ROM for Redmi 8 [GSI] - Xiaomi Redmi 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

First of all, the download link of all the files required for this "ROM" is taken from the "xda developers forum" posts.
I was constantly experimenting with GSI roms for Redmi 8. I was able to install the Pixel ROM on Redmi 8. I don't think you will have a problem if you follow the steps I shared with you one by one.
I do not take responsibility for the ROM. RESPONSIBILITY IS ENTIRELY YOURS.
Not working
-Face unlock
-Radio
-VoLTE
(You need to make a setting for the camera, notch, LTE Mobile Network and auto-brightness. I told you how to make the settings.)
NOTE: A computer is required to make this ROM setup. It must also be installed in ADB on your computer.
Note: You can install this ROM Google Camera as apk. Unfortunately, there are no features such as Portrait, night mode in the original camera application of the device. However, you can use it if you install it as an apk.
Please download that files:
Download - Pixel Experience ROM GSI file
Download --- Sky Hawk Recovery file
Download - Permissiver V5
Download -Certification Patch for Redmi 8
Download -Treble overlay for Redmi 8
Download --- Lastest Magisk-v20.4
Here -Get the TWRP Official for Redmi 8
Download - vbmeta.img
Note: Please charge your phone at least 60%

4- Go to your computer, open adb folder in cmd, write that:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img

27- Finally, if you want to fix the appearance of the screen notch go to
developer settings >> display cutout and select corner cutout.
That was it. Please note that I am not a developer, so I cannot resolve any errors. I believe that if you apply them like me, you won't have a problem. I will be waiting for your comments. Have a nice day.

You're welcome. If you encounter any problems, please let me know. If you follow what I wrote under normal conditions step by step, you won't have a problem.

Query before flashing
Hello Boss,
on checking the system by "Treble Check" app, it is showing that it is A-type System partition. And the ROM you suggested is AB type. Is there any thing i should worry about before flashing.
I am currently using Lineage OS (unofficial), and following functions doesn't work on it.
Finger print
VOLTE
Radio
face unlock
What about this ROM functionality.

At first I tried installing A-only on my device but it didn't work. It worked when I installed A / B. So please try A / B GSI. Because the device you have is probably A / B, not A-Only.
Finger print is working and face unlock is not have in Pixel Experience ROM.
VOLTE and Radio is not working bro.
I will list all the features that work by edit the post today or tommorrow bro

Certification_patch.zip
Whats the use for certification_patch.zip file?
Does it fixes the certification status in google play store?
Also, Can this file be used in any othe gsi too?

This file exists to integrate the model of the device into rom. I don't know much about google play and you can also install this and permissiver_v5 with other gsi roms. These only for Redmi 8.

Before system-as-root was used only on A/B devices but now all devices that ship with Android 9 must use system-as-root. Because of this reason you need to flash A/B roms on A-Only on these devices. As you can see from this page's device list, Redmi 8's image type is A/B so you need to flash an A/B image: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki

Does the sensor work? I tried other gsi and custom roms and sensors like accelerometer doesnt work..

All sensors working

i tried it and the sensors didn't work. i needed to flash stock rom and then pixel rom over the stock rom to get it work. seems logical, had no issue so far except the camcorder. when i record a video, lets say i recorded a video for 10 second. but when i play the video, it becomes 1hour video and the sound doesn't sync with the video. video stays frozen the whole time and plays normally at the last few seconds. i tried other gsi and had the same issue. is something wrong? any known solution? are you facing the same problem? if not, then which camera app you are using? thanks in advance because pixel experience is working now after following ur steps

Yes, there is a problem in this regard. Unfortunately, I could not solve this problem. I usually use Instagram cam for video. You can try bro

I use havocOs gsi. It has same problem. Solution:
1. record a video.
2. do not close camera app.
3. open video from the camera app not from gallery.
4. play the video once.
if that plays then you can open that same video from any app.
try that, might work.

it works sometimes but not always.. Currently I am using Havoc OS and it doesn't have a gallery app. So I downloaded "Gallery Go" from playstore and when I try to open the video from the camera app, it opens with gallery go app.
to be noted, i have added some commands in build.prop..
media.camera.ts.monotonic=0
debug.stagefright.ccodec=0
persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1
i don't know what these do but these commands were mentioned somewhere to enable camera2api..
am i missing something?

[Resurrection Remix] [Unofficial] [2018-08-19] Treble [Discontinued moved to PIE]

LAST PERSONALLY Verified as working and "stable"*: GAPPS, 8/19 GAPPS
First and foremost, I'm simply compiling this for the OnePlus 6 and am making some small tweaks to include Opengapps and not only Go Apps in the builds.
The parent for this by phhusson can be found at [Resurrection Remix] [Unofficial] [2018-05-19] Phh-Treble
Next the most important information where to get the most current build of the ROM: Google Drive
For now I suggest the version ending in -go such as: 'rr_6_1_180616_system-arm64-ab-go.img.xz' as the '-gapp' is in development, I expect a number of builds over the next few days as I finally the build scripts and then the rate to tapper off to every two weeks or as there are changes that seem to warrant it, I'm not building nightly for no reason, as RR 6.1 is reasonable stable at this time.
Note: Attached (build.sh) is the build script currently being used, it is a work in progress. and will be updated in case you more regular builds. You will need 12GB of Ram Ubuntu 16.04+ (I'm using 18.04 now, but I started with 16.04) and at least 360GB (SSD recommended) to build, and upto 6 hours for the initial run and then 2 for ever additional run.
Many thanks to phhusson for allowing me to post this based off of his work.
Changes, when I have something to report. Not all build will:
The 7/7 build includes a number of patches recommended by DocRambone.
Overlay support to force Apps fullscreen, Under Display->Advanced
Some cleanups to the UI for the round corners
Better LED support
The 7/8 build is the same as 7/7, but includes July security patches, I built it in order to match the official release.
The 7/24 build is again to match the official release
The 8/19 build is again to match the official release, note regression in status bar height I'm looking into.
Second post: will have details on what is working and not
Third Post: will have full instructions on installation, backup restore based on my experiences
* Stable is relative, for me if I consider it usable from day to day it is stable.
As of 8/11/2018
In the GAPPS version
Working:
Fingerprint
Camera (Front and Back) + Flash (Also got the OnePlus Camera working*)
Speaker
Wifi (Some cut outs seen, this is not unique to this ROM and is dependent on the access port some are worse than others, no clue why)
Bluetooth
GPS
Brightness
Slider for Notifications as of 6/18 build
Mobile Data/Voice (tested dual SIMM is working)
Google Apps
Root (using magisk 16.3), told but have not personally tested that 16.4 without changes works as well
Ambient (works serious effect on battery see next post)
Full Screen Aspect Ratio Display->Advanced 7/07/2018 build+
More fully functional LED Improved for at least mounting USB sticks in 7/7 build
USB Host - Fixed for at least mounting USB sticks in 7/24 build
Bluetooth Phone audio is on the local headset. - Fixed in 7/24 build
Seems working NFC working 5.1.11 Vendor and Boot, not working with previous to 5.1.9 Vendor and Boot I have nothing to connect to to fully test
Not Working:
The Notch hides content (need to wait for P)
Unknown:
Camera Quality: I do little with the camera and am no photographer, so I can say nothing about quality, only it installed and took pictures

Instructions to flash, backup ...
WARNING: With 5.1.8 I had no WIFI, so I suggest sticking to 5.1.6 to 5.1.7 FOR THE MOMENT
Instructions to flash, backup ...
Total time required about 90 minutes
Pre-Reqs:
First and foremost:
Start with at least 5.1.6 (or greater, as of writing 5.1.7 was the lastest), there are Treble fixes in 5.1.6 we need.
Second
verify you have a good USB cable (the Red one shipped with the phone is best)
Three
download the oneplus drivers and abd
- USB Drivers: OnePlus 6 USB Drivers for Windows
- ADB/Fastboot: ADB/Fastboot latest mini
Install both to your local system
Four
Download the latest TWRP (get both the img and zip files)
TWRP for OnePlus 6
Five
Download the files(Treble OP6 Files 5.1.6) from:
GUIDE] How to flash Treble roms on OnePlus 6
Extract and keep: vbmeta.img (if you are on 5.1.X where is the boot version you can keep the boot.img as well, if not discard).
Six
Download the lastest Oxygen OS ZIP and bootloader from:
[OnePlus 6][ROM][OTA][Oxygen OS] Mirrors for official Oxygen OS ROMs and OTA updates
As of writing this is:
5.1.6 full image: OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_010_all_1806070151_ad8b19ed516e78.zip
5.1.6 boot: OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_010_all_1806070151_boot.img
Seven
Download Device ID:
Device+ID APK
Eight
Download Magisk for Treble:
Magisk modified for treble
Since as of 6/2018 the default magisk does not support Treble we need a special version I suggest: Magisk-v16.3-factory-faizauthar12-20180406.zip as teh latest I could find with support.
Nine
Recommended download fastboot installable 5.1.6 (or latest build):
[ROM][STOCK][FASTBOOT][OP6] Stock Fastboot ROMs for OnePlus 6
Ten
Include Overlay/Ambient Display.
Download APK at: [Overlay] Enable Night Light, Auto-Brightness, Ambient Display & more on Treble ROM
Eleven
OnePlus Camera:
OnePlus Camera APK's
Finally
Download RR 6.0 for Treble compiled after 7/08/2018:
Either download the gapps or go version (gapps is still a work in progress when I wrote this)
ROMs Google Drive
Getting Ready:
WARNING: you will loss all data on your phone, backup anything you want or need, first.
Make sure you can get to fastboot (enable "Advanced Reboot" in developers options and make sure that you can enter on a reboot by pressing volume-down and power at the same time)
Make sure you are on 5.1.6+ (5.1.6 was the latest firmware upon writing this)
Remove Any security you have set (just to be safe)
Reboot to fastboot (bootloader)
run:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
"You will be greeted with a Unlock Bootloader Warning page, Hit the Vol button to select Yes and turn it Blue and Hit the Power Button to Execute the selection, allow your device to reboot"
Backup EFS
If you have not already I'd recommend backing up EFS (to do so you need to be rooted, or else use TWRP):
Preferred, if rooted simply open a terminal and run:
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/sdf2 of=/sdcard/modemst1.bin bs=2048
dd if=/dev/block/sdf3 of=/sdcard/modemst2.bin bs=2048
Copy these files someplace safe!
If not rooted reboot to fastboot (bootloader):
Ensure that the latest twrp is in the same directory as fastboot (C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot) and run (3.2.1 was the lastest as of writing this):
Code:
fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-enchilada.img
This will boot the phone into twrp
Allow modification
Select backup
select only EFS and Modem
enter a meaningful name
swipe to backup
click "Reboot System" -> "Do not Install" for TWRP if asked.
You can now locate the backup under /storage/TWRP/BACKUPS and move it to a safe location off the phone.
Backup the Phone
Recommended if you care: Backup your entire phone using TWRP as well:
Ensure that the latest twrp is in the same directory as fastboot (C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot) and run (3.2.1 was the lastest as of writing this):
- fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-enchilada.img
This will boot the phone into twrp
Allow modification
Select backup
Select Everything except EFS and Modem
enter a meaningful name
swipe to backup
click "Reboot System" -> "Do not Install" for TWRP if asked.
You can now locate the backup under /storage/TWRP/BACKUPS and move it to a safe location off the phone.
Installing RR:
Finally we are ready to install RR (or any other Treble ROM), on the OnePlus 6. You will need a build from 6/7/2018 or later to have the required Vender-Hal to be present.
You will need to locate and install the AB version for the OnePlus 6.
Note: I'm using RR from 6/13 as the base for the guide: system-arm64-ab-gapps.img
SEE FIRST POST FOR CURRENT DOWNLOAD LOCATION I compiled this using phhusson's (Orginial Build Scripts)
instructions and a bit of setup on Linux. However most Treble base ROM's should work so long as they are from after 6/7/2018 in a similar manor.
* Remember this will wipe your device and you will loss all data *
First
boot in to fastboot (bootloader):
We need to go back to TRWRP and wipe internal storage and data to be safe, as the -w option to do so when flashing is not working for me.
- fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-enchilada.img
This will boot the phone into twrp
Allow modification
Select Wipe
Advanced Wipe
Select Cache, Data and "Internal Storage"
Swipe to Wipe
Click back until you are at the main menu
Click on Reboot
Click on Bootloader -> "Do not Install" for TWRP if asked.
Second
Flash the new ROM:
Flash vbmeta.img to remove validation
Code:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
To be safe flash a default boot image (5.1.6 in this case)
Code:
fastboot flash boot_a boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b boot.img
Next reboot into recovery (you need to do this with volume down +Power, or selecting from bootload):
In stock recovery select English
Select Wipe Data and Cache
Reset system settings->yes->done
Wipe Cache->Yes->done
Erase everything->Thiscan not be undone, continue->done
back
Advanced
Reboot to fastboot->Reboot to fastboot
Now flash a the new ROM:
- fastboot flash system_a system-arm64-ab-gapps.img
- fastboot flash system_b system-arm64-ab-gapps.img
Three
reboot:
Code:
fastboot reboot
You will see the "andorid" boot screen (this is different that the Oxygen one) and being the first boot it could take a while. If you see no boot screen or it does not boot (give 10 minutes), then you likely need to repeat these steps again. If you boot into RR then continue.
You may get a Vender image mistake error ignore it it only appewars on boot.
Skip the Setup by clicking all four corners top left->top right->bottom right->bottom left (it my take more than one try), at this point you have no networking, that is what we want.
Suggestion make backup here as you have a working OS! -- Instructions to follow
Four
Move over required files: You now have RR installed and working:
Enable developer mode and then enable Advanced Reboot
Then copy over gapps-nano, Device+ ID.apk, magisk-manager apk and magisk installer zip to the phone
To get the magisk manager you need to extract it from the zip as I cloud not get the normal one to install. Extract the zip: Magisk-v16.3-factory-faizauthar12-20180406.zip copy common\magisk.apk to the phone

Deal with: "Play Services not Certified by Google":
Install Device+ID (APK downloaed above) and Open
Once done open the second line shows the GSF ID for this device
Android Register GSF
Login using a gmail account (I suggest the one you use for the playstore)
Enter the GSF in the field, now we wait about 5 to 10 minutes for it to propigate
Reboot the phone as we want paly services to start fresh
First add a wIFI network.
Critical do not let any apps update until you have registered playstore, so if you see a notification saying downloading, select and click pause. Doing so with the updated 6/17 paystore resulted in a black screen where you would enter your password, no know work around other than reset if this happens.
click on playstore it should now start
Now login to your account and you should be go (it may take more than one attempt no idea why).
Now enable the update if previously paused
Update all Apps from the playstore before continuing, this may take a while give it 10 minutes
Optional: If you want remove Device+ID now (but I leave it as it is an easy way to get information).
You now have a working Playstore, if you have hung downloads then you may need to clear the cache for play services and the playstore I assume the unregistered might be the cause of them getting messed up.

Night Light, Ambient Display, requires Root:
My suggestion is not to do this if you care abut battery as I've seen major drain (even with Ambient display disabled, testing this).
Copy the apk downloaded framework-res__auto_generated_rro.apk to /vendor/overlays
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /vendor
cp <location of file> /vendor/overlay

Reboot
Comments:
TWRP does not boot if flashed onto RR (the TWRP logo appears but it will not boot), this is currently only go to protect you from using the OnePlus Recovery and messing up RR. Flashing TWRP does not affect booting into RR.
TWRP DOES handle encryption without an issue, even a wrong first pin is not an issue
TWRP making a backup of Treble ROM, backup everything for now: Data, Boot, System, System Image, Vendor, Vendor Image.
If you have problems with hung downloads from the Playstore: Pending hung PlayStore
Wifi can be flaky (appearently this is a more general issue as even stock had some issues, I fixed them by only using either 2.4 or 5Mhz wireless, if I had both active I had constant disconnects.
Worst case, to recovery, back to Oxygen 5.1.6 if you end up in a boot loop stuck booting to rtecovery, etc:
- flash-all.bat
Reboot into recovery (you need to do this with volume down +Power, or selecting from bootload):
In stock recovery select English
Select Wipe Data and Cache
Reset system settings->yes->done
Wipe Cache->Yes->done
Erase everything->This can not be undone, continue->done
back
Advanced
Reboot to fastboot->Reboot
Load TWRP:
Code:
fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-enchilada.img
Copy the Oxygen full ROM back to the phone
Code:
adb push OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_010_all_1806070151_ad8b19ed516e78.zip /sdcard
In TWRP
Install
Select OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_010_all_1806070151_ad8b19ed516e78.zip
Go back to the root and select Advanced Wipe
Select Wipe
Advanced Wipe
Select Cache, Data and "Internal Storage"
Click on Reboot->Recovery (select Do not Install)
English
Wipe Cach and Data
Wipe Everything
Reboot
The phone will reboot same as the day it was made
If it does not then please refer to:

Note: Always boot fully at least once (I suggest twice and the first one is configuring android) before trying any steps above again.

Might be a noob question, but due to treble, is the camera quality the same with the OnePlus app?

No.
Great rom, I especially like the fact that I can choose to install without gapps (prefer fdroid). One thing that is missing is ambient display, hopefully it will be fixed sooner or later.

Never said anything about results, only that it could be installed and works, (takes pictures), personally I do little with the camera and am not photographer, but it can be installed (link above) and installed.
Updated the working to remove any confusion.

It will never be the same as OOS stock. Because aside from there is no device tree provided by OnePlus, they will never release the camera blobs due to licensing issues. Once we get a stable and proper gcam port. It'll be better than the stock OOS cam or close
is a beautiful Rom, will there be an adaptation for twrp? I have to use the gapps, because at the go version Wear OS does not work. and in the gapp version would be nice if the smartbar was running. Unfortunately, the kill app does not work ( I can not use xposed, then my bank app will not work anymore

TWRP not for now as treble is build as an image, but you should be able to flash using twrp just switch to img (though I have not tested that).
The GApps version is posted the 6/18 is working great, see second post.
As for Banking I'm unsure if any Treble based ROM passed the checks, as with or without root, as they appear as unsigned.
As for smartbar, I'll give it a try when I get a chance, as I do not use it personally.

This is a full guide for unlock/relock, install TWRP, Root your device and backup/restore stock OS. Each and every step is explained thoroughly with pictures and videos.
I have ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 (6GB variant) (X00TD) (ZB601KL), so I can’t test for other variants. Please report back issues, corrections, omissions, etc., though the guide should work for all devices.
THINGS TO KNOW (IMPORTANT)
~Every text written in double quotes “” means the same written without the quotes.
e.g.:- “abcd” means abcd
“zxcv” means zxcv
They (“”) help to separate usual text from the other text (like a command, file name, etc.)
~If you have not enabled file name extensions then you will see files without their extension and vice versa
e.g.:- “filename”, “mypicture” in 1st case
“filename.extension”, “mypicture.png” in 2nd case, respectively.
~Boot Partition or Bootloader:-This is the partition that enables the phone to boot. Without this partition, the device will not be able to boot.
~Recovery Partition:-Recovery partition lets you boots the device into a recovery mode to perform recovery tasks.
~TWRP: - stands for TeamWin Recovery Project. It is a custom touch recovery that is GUI based.
~Flashing: - simplest: - installing
~Fastboot Partition: - lets us reflash partitions. (On device)
~Fastboot: - is an executable used to reflash partitions. It comes with the Android SDK. (On PC)
~Rooting: - an Android phone lets owner edit system files. Thus enabling various tweaks and use of apps that require root access.
~Device driver: - determines how PC will communicate with a device.
~Unlocking/Relocking:-With a locked Bootloader, booting into custom things is not allowed is not. Unlocking lets us do so.
~Reboot: - Switching ON AND OFF (in simple terms)
Requirements
MIND, PC, USB Cable, Internet, Fully charged PC (Windows OS), and obviously Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1
The Real Steps From Here
FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE YOU WILL PROBABLY LOSE ALL THE DATA ON YOUR PHONE SO MAKE A BACKUP FIRST (Don’t worry it’s in guide too)
STEP 1. Downloading all the necessary files
a. Here are 2 zip file with everything you will probably need following the guide :-
basic zip
extension zip
. I have tested the procedures using these files only so maybe other versions might not work. A “guide.doc” with the same text as in here (on XDA) is also present. It will be of great help if you don’t have internet connection in PC.
The basic zip file contains minium files needed.
The extension zip file contains the TWRP recovery(then one used in the guide),guide.docx ,and the videos used here too.
Copy the twrp file to unlock folder of extracted folder.
b. Extract the zip file above.
First download the zip file and Copy to PC
Then Right Click on it
Then click “Extract All”
Uncheck “Show extracted files…”
Click on “Extract”
The folder “zip” will be extracted
Done
This “zip” folder will be called extracted folder in the guide video link to extract zip
To download most up to date version of the files go to links present at last
STEP 2. BACKUP
a. Use an apk backup tool to backup app installers
VIDEO TO BACKUP APP INSTALLERS
b. Some APPS like Whatsapp, etc. have backup to drive function use that
VIDEO TO BACKUP WHATSAPP CHATS
c. Backup SMS AND Call Logs
VIDEO TO BACKUP CALL LOGS AND MESSAGES
d. Copy each and every file from you internal storage to PC.
Video to backup each file to pc
DONE
Step 3. UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER(Data will be wiped)
2 options:-
A. Official Method (NOT TESTED): -
In extracted folder go to “unlock” folder then “Official” folder. Install the “UnlockTool_9.1.0.3_180621_fulldpi_signed_ZB601KL.apk” in Asus and follow the steps from there.
B. Unofficial Method (Tested):-
a. Installing Drivers
Connect phone using USB cable to PC
Right click on This Pc
Go to “Manage” > “Device Manager” Or Just search for “Computer Management”/“Device Manager”
A list will appear.
Find your device (best way to do so is by disconnecting/connecting the device and notice the changes accordingly in the list)
Now right click on it>”Update Driver Software”>“Browse my computer for driver software”
Now either enter path of the driver folder or click on browse and navigate to the driver path from there.
Press Next OR
“Let me pick …”>and select the driver
video to install driver
The drivers have been installed
b. Booting into FASTBOOT
Switch Off the Phone
Hold the Volume UP and Power ON Button Simultaneously
Device buttons labbled image
You will see this on your phone
image of FASTBOOT screen
c. Unlocking Bootloader
Now connect phone using USB cable to PC
Look for the “unlock” folder in the extracted folder.
Open it
Find “unlock.cmd” or “unlock” file
(Or “unlock no erase.cmd” to keep data {not tested})
Open it
Done
d. You will see some messages in yellow/brown/white colour on your phone
You will most probably see “encrypting your device”, “warning Bootloader unlocked” messages, let phone do its work and don’t interrupt it, and keep cable connected. Phone might reboot too. The phone will at last boot into stock OS and you will see the device setup screen.
image of the warning message
e. Now if you wanted TO ONLY UNLOCK BOOTLOADER THEN THE JOB IS DONE, long press power button. If you want to root or flash TWRP then continue (Tested method to root requires TWRP flashing or you can try the untested method to root only)
Step4. Installing/Flashing TWRP
TESTED METHOD
a. Connect phone using USB cable to PC
b. Don’t setup your device just now because possibilities are you might lose the data again
c. Boot into fastboot mode
d. Open the “unlock” folder in the extracted folder.
Now Two Different ways to opt for from here:-
i. THE LAZY METHOD (Tested)
a. Open “flash_recovery.bat” or “flash_recovery” in the “unlock” folder of the extracted folder.
b. You can flash the tested or any other recovery using this script.
c. Follow the steps from the script
video of how to use the script
d.Then go to step of Flashing ZIPS of The Manual Method
e. Done
OR
ii. The Manual Method (Tested)
a. Keeping Shift Key pressed, right click {with mouse} in the blank white space of the “unlock” folder’s explorer window.
b. From the menu select “open command window here”
c. A CMD window will be opened
open cmd video
d. Now type “fastboot devices”
e. See if your device is connected. You will see something like this
f. Now type “fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-X00TD-20181024.img”
If you want to flash any other recovery instead of “twrp-3.2.3-0-X00TD-20181024.img” write the file name of your recovery file. Make sure it’s in “unlock folder”. Though this recovery is the only tested one (by me).
g. Now keeping the phone connected to PC, boot into TWRP/Recovery by pressing the Volume Down and Power ON Button Simultaneously.
h. The usual warnings, messages and recovery boot screen will flash:-
warning image
twrp flash screen image
i. It may take some time to load so wait for at least 2 minutes.
j. Now if touch is not working press power button 2 times (on and off the screen)
video showing how to enable touch in twrp
k. If it shows “Swipe to Unlock” do so. If it shows “Swipe to Allow Modifications” then wait and continue reading …
swipe to allow image
swipe to unlock
l. “Swipe to Allow Modifications” means you allow TWRP to modify system. This will make sure TWRP remains in the phone and not just vanish after a reboot but it also means you will have to flash some other files to be able to boot into stock rom back.
m.
2 ways from here:-
i. Now after swiping, Decrypt Screen will appear just press cancel.
decrypt screen image
OR
ii. If you have data on the device then enter pin/password or try default_password.
If you had kept pattern then either go back and change it or try this:-
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
these no’s correspond to pattern dots.
Say you kept pattern “third row left to right” then the password is 789 .
If all these fail then you will have to lose your data.
n. As we don’t have any precious data in our phone we will (or you are compromising)
Press “Wipe”
Press “Format Data”
TYPE “yes”
Press “tick” or “enter key”
Done
wipe data video
>Flashing ZIPS
o. Now Copy these 2 files
i. “decrypt.zip” or “decrypt”
ii. “Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_12.16.2018.zip” or “Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_12.16.2018”
From extracted folder to your phones internal storage.
p. Go to Install>select the zip>swipe to flash (flash dm_verity… then decrypt…)
If you don’t see your device storage connected then try reconnecting using USB cable and also check if MTP is enabled.
enable mtp video
>Done
Want to root? Then continue…
or >
Now reboot to system Go to Reboot>System
video to show how to rebbot to system in twrp
Step 5. Rooting
We will be using Magisk to root you can use any other method but this is the only tested method.
a. Copy “Magisk-v18.0.zip” or “Magisk-v18.0” to your phones internal storage from extracted folder.
b. Go to Install>select Magisk…>swipe to flash
Done
c. Now reboot to system Go to Reboot>System
reboot video
e. To use Magisk properly you may need to download latest apk. (Link at last)
Step 6. Relock (NOT TESTED)
a. Connect phone using USB cable to PC
b. Boot into fastboot mode
c. Open “Relock” folder from extracted folder
d. Open “relock.cmd” or “relock” file
Done
Step 7. RESTORING
a. First setup the Device again
b. Copy each and every file back to the phone storage
c. Now to restore messages see the restoring part of this video here
d. WhatsApp messages will be automatically restored after you install the app with same number as before.
Tips
After rooting don’t just go on and flash a custom rom. Take a backup first (of all partitions) using TWRP and keep it safe somewhere so you won’t need to find unbrick tutorials later. Plus you will have your most stable and tailored rom with you.
Also don’t just go on and flash xyz mod. Research and then Flash.
Magisk is our best friend. It lets you do modifications without hurting the system. The Magisk modules are most safe mods as they can be reverted back easily.
And don’t just go on and debloat stock OS. In Magisk there is a module called Debloater use that. You can easily revert back if anything goes wrong.
Other good Magisk modules: - Energized, Systemizer, MidnightCore & Advanced Charging Controller (acc) but do read their XDA guides first.

Thanks for the help.
I'm running into some problems while installing the driver software on my Windows 10 laptop. It shows Error 10 this device cannot start.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, rebooted my pc on every step, tried to install while connected to my phone, but nothing seems to work.
I've installed the Pie Beta for Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 (not sure if this is causing it)
Is there a solution to this problem?
I am currently on Beta Pie...will these methods work for bootloader unlocking and TWRP, custom rom flash ???? I just wanna use PE/Havoc OS rom...no other tweaks or root
thanks its working
I updated to pie beta and I think this guide is not working for that, because when flashing twrp. I'm getting 'request download size is more than allowed size' and I tried every way possible to solve it. But no luck Hope you can help me with it, or maybe it'll work after stable version?

Happy that many GSI roms are under develment. I hope this phone will die due to hardware, as there are lots of options in future to keep the software updated.
Anyway, if someone intends to try, following is the link of all GSI Roms.

I haven't this problem, have you flashed the gsi fixer? Did you start the installation from miui 12.0.1? It's really important, anyway, you can try to do again the procedure
Does VoLTE and VoWIFI works ? It's a GSI so I'm not thinking it works...

Hey !
I'm so happy !
Everything works on that GSI rom, but I haven't the certification on SafetyNet.
With the covid-tracing app, there is a little problem but it's with all the custom roms so...
Thanks a lot for your guide !

Hi, I'm happy for you, for safetynet try the magisk module, I didn't have this problem, anyway, try the rom and than leave a feedback, it could be useful for other people who want to try this rom
I can't get this rom to work correctly. Did the steps as described, but it has SELinux not enforced and Google play isn't certified. Tried multiple times.
EDIT: seems my phone is soft bricked now (Can't install any rom). Going back to xaomi stock to try again.
I tried again and got it to work. The certificate patch throws an error but Google apps are working.
I get an SE Linux not enforcing error. though.
Is there anything I can do about that?

This is Android 12 ROM built from Google's AOSP sources released on October 4, 2021. The sources are based on the Lineage OS for A21s, with some modifications for Android 12.
NOT WORKING:
Samsung Proprietary Apps (Samsung Health, etc.)
VoLTE & VoWifi (Due to Samsung's twisted & wicked IMS service)
Auto Brightness (The phone doesn't have the sensors for it anyway)
ExFAT-formatted SD Card & OTG (there are legal problems associated with it.)
Working but buggy or not tested:
Audio volume is smaller than usual (WIP)
RIL starting up late on very rare occasions. If telephony doesn't work after reboot, please allow up to a minute.
Cell broadcast (emergency messages) is working in South Korea, but not tested in other countries
Working, but needs installation of additional apps:
NFC, Screen Sharing, Wi-FI Direct works, but needs installation of additional apps to work
Browser app is not installed by default. Installing Firefox or Chrome from Google Play is recommended
GPS & Location services don't work when GApps are not installed.
This ROM is not compatible with TWRP due to File-based encryption.
The ROM is NOT ROOTED by default. In order to root it, install Magisk from official source.
WORKING:
Everything else not mentioned above
p.s. ADVANTAGES WHEN COMPARED TO GSI Android 12:
Based on official release, whereas GSI is based on Beta 5
Working MTP
Working NFC
Working Cell Broadcast
Fixed Fingerprint removal bug
Camera works up to 48MP (GSI camera is fixed @ 12MP)
Double-tap-to-wake is working
Model number correctly matches with the actual device (shows SM-A217N instead of AOSP on ARM64)
Updated kernel graphics driver to the latest from ARM
1. BEFORE INSTALLING, make sure that you have UNLOCKED the bootloader of your device. This is a great guide that show how to do it. Also, the phone must be on the Stock ANDROID 11. If you are on binary U6/U7, please use the recovery tar for U6/U7.
2. Download the Lineage Recovery, ROM, Google Apps, ADB, and Odin. Unzip ADB and Odin to somewhere appropriate. Save the ROM images to the folder where you unzip ADB/Fastboot
- ROM: super.img. boot.img, dtbo.img, recovery(U5), recovery(U6), recovery(U7)
- ADB and Fastboot
- Odin
- Kernel Source
- Google Apps(Flame)
