please help with terminology and firmwares - Xiaomi Redmi 8 Questions & Answers

sorry for the noob post, this is my 1st xiaomi phone
ey guys, just bought this phone a few days back and im waiting for my ubl counter for 3 more days. im not new to phones in general. i used to have a sam gal s2 and s5, and the devs there always recommended the latest released official stock base before using roms.
my question is
currently, i bought this phone as global stable 11.0.5.0 indonesian pcn_ID_xm and updated to 11.0.7.0. i want to change base stock to pcn_CN_xm (fewer bloat and stuff). or is there a better option/opinion?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-redmi-8/how-to/rom-miui-11-xiaomi-eu-t4006247
i just want to have a safe backup in case i need the base firmware before trying to install mods, like odin.

I can't understand you bro. Are you saying that: "How can I change the version of my phone?"

https://mifirm.net/model/olive.ttt
is the site legit? official stock firmwares being able to install by settings - about phone - system update - selecting the zip from the menu without unlocking the bootloader?
i guess "region" would be the better word. currently its a global stable "indonesian region", but im tempted to switch to a global stable "eu region". is there anything important to know when switching official regions?

firest your phone will be out of warranty
see this guide
https://c.mi.com/oc/miuidownload/detail?guide=2

yep already got all those, but what im asking for is on older phones with full system root (not magisk systemless root), later firmwares from late countries usually have better performance.
is that still true with current a/b partitions?

Mi Mix ROM clarification

I have been extremely confused on what the available ROMs are for this device. I usually am not this cautious, but the sheer rarity of this phone always makes me think twice with what I do with it.
So after reading around a bit, to my understanding these are the available ROMs:
Chinese Stable
Chinese Developer
EU unofficial global (on MIUI 6.x.x??!)
Vendor ROM
What I don't understand is that listed for me is "MIUI Global 8.0 | Stable 8.0.7.0.0 (MAHCNDI)". No Chinese bloatware, English is set by default, play store is automatically installed...
I want to update my phone OTA, but clearly this is broken as no updates even pop up after checking. My question is:
What rom am I running?
Of the following ROMs mentioned which one is the update to my device?
Thanks guys, I hope I haven't been the millionth person to ask.
Edit: after reading a bit more I've found others in my same situation. English is automatically selected, no bloatware, and the playstore is automatically installed. Apparently I have a vendor ROM, one that was installed by the seller/vendor. It's extremely hard to believe that this isn't an official global ROM!
So this Chinese stable rom: http://en.miui.com/thread-436070-1-1.html , would it have bloatware and the whole 9 yards of hell?
I can't update OTA because the updater is broken and I'm not trying to unlock the bootloader unless it's absolutely necessary. Am I on an abandoned ROM?
I had this rom it wasn't EU rom it is global same as you 8.0.7.0.0 I liked it cos it clean of all that bloatware that other roms have but I couldn't install xposed so I tried an EU rom and it did work the Eu rom does have some Chinese crap in it but some can be uninstall and now I have a very good looking and working rom, you got to tweak and customize it as you which and i'm happy with it.
I am in the same situation as you, I'm on 8.0.8.0.0 "Global" . It was installed by Gearbest, I can only assume. My updater can't see any other ROMS, not even when I've downloaded it either. So yes I think it's "abandoned".
I've asked for my phone to be unlocked so that I can get access to update the ROM later on from Xiaomi. It's been about 24 hours, I can only assume they're busy since lots of the phones have been delivered to customers by now.
My plan is to go onto the EU ROM unless I can get access to google apps using the Chinese ROM.
So to my understanding now, Xiaomi flashed every device that was sold internationally (ones shipped to redistributers like GearBest or Geekbuying)? And now they offer no support or legitimate way (besides unlocking the bootloader) to update... Can somebody correct me or didn't Xiaomi curse us with this beautiful device?
Interesting to hear. Maybe I'll check out the EU ROM

New to Xiaomis... can anyone explain me different MIUI's?

I bought this Redmi 4X yesterday, it asked for update and I did it. I'd like more of a stock andro experience but I'm not yet sure if I won't lose some camera capabilities (I never had a smartphone with camera that makes people look better before). So I read that Xiaomi gives different MIUI versions to download and supports this fully. But then I learn that "older" version of MIUI that I have (MIUI 7 vs MIUI 8 I have) has newer android 7 compared to my android 6. Why is that?
Is there any consensus on least bloatware on Redmis? Also, is MIUI the same as rom, or it's just an addon installed on top of AOSP? Sorry for asking such questions, but in my case I always understand things after I already have flashed some roms, but don't have any backup phone in case I brick my phone.
Current stats:
6.0.1 MMb29M android
MIUI global 8.5 Stable
8.5.2.0 (Mammied)
Hi
Sorry but did you buy a xiaomi smartphone without take any information about it ??
1st question : will you try to root & install custom firmware ?
If answer is yes, you should first use method to unlock the bootloader.
After that, everything will be so easy !

[Q] Advice for a New N9600 owner

Hello people as the title states I recently purchased a note 9. I wanted to get the N960F model but when it arrived, to my surprise it was a N9600, which is no problem for me because snapdragon is a good thing, the only downside is the fewer development.
Anyhow I have some. Questions and I would like to hear your recommendations As I'm waiting the 7 days for the OEM unlock to appear.
1. Should I update the system? My n9 came with Android 8.1.0,but I don't know if I update it would be detrimental for the sake of rooting
2. Is this model rootable? I believe so but could you direct me to the thread on that regard.
3. Would you recommended self de bloating with TB or try WETA Rom?
4. What would you suggest: stay on stock + root or WETA Rom?
5. I've seen a lot of pie complains so should I stay on Oreo or give Pie a try? I come from the OnePlus3, I'm a former flashoholic XD and 'til my last moments with the OP3 I had HavocOS which was pie based, thus I'm hesitant to look back to Oreo.
6. This should be 1st but anyway do I need to unlock the bootloader or something special before rooting and installing twrp?
7. I've read that development for the SD version is difficult and that AOSP Roms are stuck because of gpu frequencies and other stuff, but do you think that this version will receive some. More loving from the development department in the future?
Thanks in advance guys and I appreciate your time in reading and for any suggestions you may give.
yes
Just like exynos, the bootloader is unlocked and you can always root it, version does not matter, pie , oreo. and yes you can also run all the GSIs on the phone cause its a Treble enabled device which helps a lot with roms and i think there will be much more roms for n9600 as well as soon as it ages a bit and people start rooting them. You could install WETA ROM or any other ROM / Kernel, Rooting is same as Exynos model except the TWRP has to be for Snapdragon

Thanks mate, in terms of rooting, should I use official magisk of a custom one?
On the twrp thread for the SD variant people mention the official. They just recommend versions 18.1 for Oreo and 19 for pie, is that alright?
And if I update my firmware and software over Ota before rotring and installing twrp, will it be a problem?

Need for flashing EU rom?

Hello
I'm about to purchase an Mi 9 for my son. I can only buy it online, since no physical stores have it where i live. It's not officially released where i live. I think that the phone will come with the global rom.
I saw in a youtube video, that the phone will drain battery in standby mode. Since there is a bug that make the phone try to connect to both the Chineese and the European networks. It could be fixed by installing the EU rom. There was also many other good reasons to flash the Eu rom. Like for instance a cleaner firmware with less bloat. Is this true?
Can i flash an Eu rom on a global version without unlocking the booloader?
If I unlock the bootloader to flash the EU rom. Can it then be locked again? (Because of Netflix)
Thanks
Yes its true that EU Rom is debloated and have fixed Networks
But You can Not lock the bootloader in the EU Rom.
And yes Netflix is Widevine Level 3 but i dont know Who can See a diffference on a Smartphone Display. Btw as i know You can Download Movies in HD and watch them. Only streaming is Not HD
Thanks
Just called support from the web shop. He told me that, it is a EU version.

There are two ROMs that I think you are confusing. There's an EU version of the stock ROM which is virtually identical to the Global ROM and there is a custom EU ROM which is probably what you saw in the YouTube video.
The custom EU ROM is reverse engineered from the China ROM rather than the Global. It was originally created to provide a non-Chinese ROM for Xiaomi phones that didn't have an official Global ROM.
The EU ROM has always had serious bugs on every single phone where I have ever flashed it. You should go to the official website for that ROM and look at the discussion/support thread and see if that's still the case.
The EU ROM you are referring to is a custom ROM. You need to unlock the bootloader to flash it and frequently you need to use an unnoficial version of TWRP to do that. People often brick their phones using unofficial TWRP recoveries. Permanently bricking a phone is also way more common on newer Treble compliant phones than it was in the old days so even if you have experience flashing custom ROMs you can still brick your phone and turn it into an expensive paperweight.
I would do more research outside of XDA if you are interested in EU ROM because there is no support for that ROM here.

Guide me please

Hey, so first of all sorry for making a long post and I might repeat things for which there may be threads so sorry in advance regarding that, so moving on ,I just bought k20 Pro, while miui is awesome , I'm thinking of switching rom, but can't do it rn as I'll be traveling soon and don't want to risk bricking my phone, I'll do it asap after I return (in 1 week) so my questions are:
1) How to unlock bootloader?
2) How to flash recovery ? And which one , I've always used TWRP on earlier device, but some ppl I see here say Orangefox.
3)I know how to flash a ROM, but what is the vendor everyone keeps telling to flash and should that be flashed everytime installing new rom?
4) Do you lose support for hd in prime and Netflix after flashing rom? If yes how to bring it back (if possible ).
5) ROM recommendation! I've used Lineage os on my previous device, so close it would be good, recommend something which is stable and fast , I don't use much customisation, and should be close to stock Android, as less bugs as possible.
6) Anything I need to know about the device? Something which will help me in future.
Note:i I've upgraded to Miui 12 so please try base answers on that version. I have Indian version of phone.
Thank you to the folks reading this and answering!!

Here's a guide to unlocking the bootloader. This is from the official MIUI global forums.
https://c.mi.com/thread-2262302-1-0.html
Stick with TWRP. Get it from here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/k2...icial-twrp-xiaomi-redmi-t3944363/post79823568 get the latest version. Orange Fox is a good choice of you stick with MIUI or a MIUI based custom ROM. Otherwise TWRP is the better option. Flashing instructions are there. You shouldn't need to flash the vbmeta patcher.
Check out my guide here, read the thread as some of your questions are answered there including a basic overview of vendor and firmware.

If you are used to LOS, then you may as well stick with that. It's as stable as any ROM for this phone.

If you stick with Indian firmware and vendor, you should keep widevine L1.
If you get in a mess, follow this guide from the official MIUI forums to restore the phone with a fastboot ROM.

You will need to view this page in desktop mode, if viewing on a mobile.
You can get the latest MIUI fastboot ROM from here.
